It's so quiet here... drops a pin, and actually hears the pin drop and hit the floor

4:37 PM
WHOA
THATS SO COOL

4:51 PM
@terdon How did you do that? askubuntu.com/questions/803999/…
I tried,
but it told me
there was "an error"

@AndroidDev how did he do what
nuke the convo?

When I clicked on the "automatically move to chat."
@ThomasWard Yes. ^^^^

god-level magics

@ThomasWard But why would it give me an error but not him?
Not fair :(

because god level magics

4:53 PM
OK, maybe it is.

<--- is having fun getting etcd to play nice with my CA.

Running my own certificate authority.

4:57 PM
oh
rly

@NathanOsman Thought you used Let's Encrypt?

how much does that cost?

@AndroidDev This is for etcd peer authentication in a CoreOS cluster.

oh so it's self signed?

@Zacharee1 a few minutes of time, nothing more.
The CA is self-signed.

4:58 PM
ok

The certificates are signed by the CA.
Obviously browsers don't trust them, but CoreOS will if it has the root CA.

@NathanOsman Which means you get:

Unfortunately, this is all theory until I actually get it up and running.

You get that ^^^
@ThomasWard - Opinion based: askubuntu.com/questions/804107/…
And a dupe.

5:17 PM
@NathanOsman Are you in here?
@Zacharee1 - What about you?

wat

@Zacharee1 - Does this seem like a legit thing?
I installed from here: 01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/… This version: Graphics Installer 1.4.0 for Ubuntu* 15.10, 64-bit I have Intel Graphics 2xxx — KillerDoge 6 mins ago

01 provides graphics drivers for Intel

5:19 PM
@AndroidDev I'm here.

@Zacharee1 But doesn't Ubuntu include Intel drivers by default?

they have drivers yes
but sometimes Intel has problems

@Zacharee1 And 01 are better?

if you need them they're something to try

@AndroidDev note that OP doesn't even need to try the intel installer

5:24 PM
@edwinksl I don't understand.

what do you not understand?

@edwinksl Your previous message.

look at the comments in the post you linked

\o

@edwinksl Oh :P

@Rinzwind I think he's trying to use the GNOME Gmail app

could be :-P

done

5:47 PM
Internal links on Ask Ubuntu would be preferrable.
Otherwise you risk getting it flagged as link only...

@ByteCommander that doesn't qualify for LOA
because the link doesn't answer the question
the answer answers the question, suggests to do something else, and then links to instructions for that something else
it would be better to use an AU or SE link though

yeah, but still...

@Zanna this is the traceroute game in one line: echo $(traceroute please.com | wc -l) - 1 | bc
requires traceroute: sudo apt-get install traceroute -y

what's that

The Traceroute Game
Most hops wins :)
I invented it just today

5:51 PM
lol

BAM!
I got a score of 30

why does it need the echo?

Because with echo it will output the amount of lines and then substract 1 with bc
I can golf this

12

It depends on your location??

5:55 PM
uh
wat

How many hops

666

I guess?
@ThomasWard DEEVIL

What does echo $(traceroute spam.com | tail -n +2 | wc -l) give you?

5:56 PM
what a surprise! 666 here too!

For me it's 30
lmao

@grooveplex 666. 'cuase this is a system within a system within a system within a system within a... four hours later ...system, within a system, then through five network hops and out to the 'net.

@ThomasWard I see...

yawns, and goes back to the flags queue
o/ @Seth

Does anyone here know the quickest way to get 406 reps?

write good answers?

write good questions and answers.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 writing good answers is legal
at least, I hope it is o_O

6:05 PM
No I'm to scaried to ask a question or answer a question.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Write and post good questions and answers. Only true way to get reputation of any amount.
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Then there is no way to achieve your desired rep level.

he's trying to get 1k on security.se
@ThomasWard thee!

@Zacharee1 Indeed. He still has to post good questions and answers either way.

yeah

no way around it

6:06 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 create security holes and then ask how to block them

create a browser with loads of security holes. call it "the most secure browser ever" and sit back and watch >:-D

xD

didn't we call that IE

^
I was gonna say, just reskin IE 6

Oh now I got a name
Improved IE

6:12 PM
@Rinzwind IIE

I^2E, classic

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE >-D

@The Mods so me the way to 1000,000 reps!

that's a nonexistent number

that is basically 1000 to a german

6:20 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 answer enough q's so your rep floats to 200. wait for the rep counter to reset and do the same. At some point you will need to answer 1 or 2 q's a day to reach 200.
500 days later: 100k

math checks out

Someone remote into my pc and answer a question for me.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 fake gps :-) works for pokemon go too

Has anyone seen @Videonauth lately?

@AndroidDev sure :p

6:27 PM
@Videonauth Hi!

@AndroidDev I did!

omg dino

@edwinksl aww why, I'm just cleaning up here at my flat, preparing for the day after tomorrow

@ThomasWard - Question: Why doesn't my name show there: askubuntu.com/questions/804131/dual-boot-with-windows-10

@AndroidDev you was #6 :)

@Rinzwind Eh?

6:36 PM
@AndroidDev you didn't flag it / close vote it before I closed it off

@AndroidDev you didnt close vote. Just flagged it

@AndroidDev only 1st few that CV are shown

@ThomasWard I most definitely did flag it.

need 3k rep to actually vote to close

@edwinksl Oh.

6:37 PM
@AndroidDev flags aren't close votes though

flag <> CV

@Rinzwind you have to Close Vote to show in the list
flags just poke mods and mods exercise the Evils

@ThomasWard Just need a few more "repz" as @Rinzwind says :)

haha DESTROYYYYYED

?
Barely made it really.

6:43 PM
@jokerdino squishing the evils :p

Oh noes, it's midnight.

grrr updates via a proxy are evil
slow as heck.

I will continue my lurking duties tomorrow.

sweet dreams :)

7:05 PM
@Rinzwind but then they come down and hit people anyway... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebratory_gunfire

I don't think there's a problem here askubuntu.com/questions/804160/…

:)

Wait Ubuntu switched to apt instead of apt-get. :O

shiny shiny apt

7:19 PM
So no more apt-get just apt?

apt-get is still there

@Zacharee1 I know and that's good! :)

you can still use apt-get. apt is just a fancy new interface than combines apt-get and apt-cache and adds some colours, easy-reading line breaks, stuff like that

then why did you ask?
@Zanna oh that's what it is?

@Zacharee1 I just wanted to know if I was using an out dated command.

7:21 PM
well you are

that's my understanding... like instead of apt-cache search gimp do apt search gimp -same info (I think), looks better
seems you need to use apt-get (with -q) though if you want to redirect the output for some reason, apt will warn you that its interface is 'not stable'
62
Q: What is the difference between apt and apt-get?

nik90I read about the new fancy progress bar which was added to apt 1.0 in Softpedia and how to enable it here. However on running sudo apt-get update, I did not see the fancy progress bars. On reading the second link again, the solution explicitly requires you to use sudo apt update. Hence my questi...

I need someone to upvote one of my questions and give me an answer to downvote :p

you can safely downvote this naa askubuntu.com/a/804141/527764
but it will get deleted quick haha

(please don't reciprocate - I got 215 & already lost 45 to the SE bitbucket today)

Q: Does snappy packaging make a convenient, portable, offline MediaWiki possible (say, on a thumb drive)?

wattahayI LOVE MediaWiki, and would love to have one as a personal wiki solution on a thumb drive. There seem to be solutions for this on Windows, via XAMP. But from what I can tell, linux does not allow this. Now that snaps are here, I am wondering if they make such a technology more accessible. How d...

Huh? How comes that Braiam is suspended again? He was put in the penalty box another time for a week just a few days ago...

(because both totally upvote worthy)

@ByteCommander o_O

@ByteCommander again? it seems it is the same suspension though

7:57 PM
@Zanna thx :D
@edwinksl maybe extended

No, I am sure he was back again afterwards.

they won't tell us anything though :p
maybe he has to work

@ByteCommander really? that's interesting. i thought his 1-week suspension started 4 days ago
so 3 days left sounds correct to me

last activity was the 24th
so yeah

Anyone know how to check if a file exists in Java? Is there a special method in a class to do it or do you just have to check exceptions?

hi guys

@Serg Hello! :)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 hi there , how's it going ?

Sergy!
:)

9:01 PM
Sergy!

@NathanOsman or @ThomasWard , question about python practices : So , I've discovered that adding leading underscore hides a function from pydoc. Hence the question , is it proper to do def _main(): just to avoid documenting that function ? Or should I leave it

Holy cow, what a wall of unformatted text! askubuntu.com/q/804196/367990

@ByteCommander @Rinzwind looks like yall missed me . Well guess what, I missed you too Squeezes everybody in a hug

squeezed

@Serg I've been busy huntng pokemon :+)

9:03 PM
@Rinzwind how's the hunting going ? Caught any special ones ?
I haven't slept today . . . fixing my bio clock . . .
Also, shredding tons and tons of paper

@Serg Prefixing a function or method with an underscore is a way of denoting that it is intended to be private, or more specifically, that it is not part of a public ABI.

The only Pokémon game I ever played is Pokémon Silver for good old GameBoy Color...
That were times...
@Serg sudo shred /home/*

@NathanOsman so that's a no . . . .it's intended only for API and not for simple scripts , correcto ?

user136984
Well, my Japanese course is going really well!

@Serg need a good eevee. I have all the candies I need _O-4

9:06 PM
@ParanoidPanda konbawa , Panda samma

user136984
I don't really know much Kanji yet, but I know all of Hiragana, and mostly all of Katakana. But in terms of the spoken language I'm doing really well.

@Serg Python does not have public/protected/private but prefixes names with one or two underscores.

user136984
@Serg: こんばんわ

_name has no technical meaning but is a hint for the developer that this method is not part of the public API and should not be used in external modules because its implementation might change etc etc.

user136984
Seems there is no Kanji for that...

9:07 PM
@ByteCommander yup, know that. I am more concerned with documentation and just making it pretty ( by hiding junk that i don't wanna document )

@ParanoidPanda - is one = is two >:-D

user136984
Or is Anthy just missing it?

__name actually performs some name mangling and therefore practically hides the name for foreign modules.
But in real it just renames it by prefixing it with the module name IIRC.

user136984
It's strange, I haven't yet received the email from ubuntu-release about the EOL of 15.10...

user136984
Maybe they have forgotten?

9:09 PM
@Serg Don't be lazy. And if you're lazy, stand to it.
That reminds me of this:

user136984
They seem to be forgetting a lot lately... They even just sent round an email to say that they almost forgot about the Alpha 2 milestone and only remembered at the last minute because a flavour emailed to say it would also participate...

@andrew.46 noooooooo dont delete it. we posted it at the same time :D
almost at 200 <3

Welp , if I will gather enough energy today ( which has nothing to do with lazines ) I might even update both README.md files and tag each indicator with release

what do you mean "if"?

@ByteCommander I used to write comments like that :D

9:12 PM
I haven't slept today in order to reset my bio clock, so my mental capacity is low today , hence "if"

@NathanOsman I never did. when someone asked me I always said: the function name IS the documentation

@NathanOsman question : Is Django worth learning for finding a python-related job ?

@Serg it does not hurt :)

Ok, might as well have it as a side learning task . . . My objective however is to get into "marketable" shape and fast, like within year or year and half
Aside from my bash and python stuff, with only surface knowledge of Java and some C 101 , I don't have that much to show, so need to get some skillz to shoff

@Serg the experts about that should be setting there: chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/6/python

9:17 PM
oh i see sergy in python chat
and byte too

@Serg I general I would advice also javascript and maybe perl.

I'm gonna lurk there a little bit . . .
Javascript in general in demand, i know that much . . . @Rinzwind anything specific about perl ? any specific area ?

@edwinksl I'm lurking there most time. Just not talking much.

@ByteCommander speak up! need to spread ubuntu there too

9:19 PM
those noobs are probably using osx or some crap

Apropos, something creepy happened today on Windows 10...

@Serg no but from what I see where I work and chat with other dutch coders perl is used more than python though there is not a lot in it

(not that W10 itself wouldn't be creepy already)

perl and python are pretty much interchangeable :P
just knowing the basics on perl will help :)

But apparently right during a game of WoT, Skype upgraded and launched itself and even popped up and stole focus.

9:20 PM
@ByteCommander let me guess: you still won?

It wasn'T even running, just acted totally on itself.

@ByteCommander thats' skype's way of saying "I've upgraded, Notice me sempai !!!"

@ByteCommander that's MS for you <:)

No idea, probably I got nuked, like most times...
@Serg They just wanted to make sure I see the ads they ship with often enough I guess...

Of course ! It's their money

9:22 PM
sigh I need one more question to answer :P

@Rinzwind upboated

Welp , I eventually will pickup Perl. Knowing another language never hurts. I'm more curious about what can learn to start getting out there. I mean , it's gotta start happening. The time is limited

@edwinksl 205 <3 you did that

so time to catch pokemon amirite

nah I am done for today.

9:26 PM
@Rinzwind only about half of that today for me...

I'm on the opposite end - got downvoted today actually, -2

I'd love to move the points I lost due to rep cap from yesterday over.
Is anybody in here using Discord btw?

@Serg Sorry for the late reply. Yes.
My Django skills actually helped me get a Python job once.
Of course, that wasn't the only thing but they specifically mentioned Django during the interview.

bedtime! see you 2morrows

Sleep well

9:33 PM
night Rinzy.

@ByteCommander yet another person who tries to uninstall python...

can I yell at them please ?

Feel free.

takes out loudspeaker and rotten tomatoes . . . .

@Rinzwind Okay :). I thought you were a little ahgead of me....
ahead

9:46 PM
I'm talking with someone who is consistently seeing 1300-1500ms ping times on their Mac. Does anyone have suggestions?

It seems to be limited specifically to the computer(s) since other devices on the network obtain full speed.
We tried resetting the PRAM and reconnecting - no luck.

Compared network settings and traceroutes?

@Serg Not sure if you got an answer, but as @NathanOsman said, it's a way to define a private function that is local only to that class or python file/module

Rule of thumb: if you want other third-party code using the function / method, don't prefix it with an underscore. If not, use one.
@ByteCommander Keep in mind I'm assisting this person from a few hundred miles away, so I can't easily run a bunch of commands :)
I had them run a speed test from the terminal a few times.
The speeds varied wildly but ping was consistently high.

9:50 PM
Hm. And other devices connected to the same router dont have these issues?
IS there any proxy/VPN configured?

@NathanOsman yep.
@NathanOsman Case in point would be like my custom _exit() function in here: gist.github.com/teward/af8feed8668bed17332490000c2971b5
or more better
one of the dozen or so libraries in which private functions exist solely within that thing, for different actions, with individual set/get/return functions that call those

Sorry, was reading that question.

so the actual "setting" or interaction with data is kept away and not callable from other scripts
(that is foobar.baz() would call class Foobar's _baz() function that does some interaction with a property or such, and baz would return _baz(), which in turn returned something after execution)
there's a lot of different cases, but Nathan's spot on
if you don't want any other code outside the function / .py file you write the function into to access it, prefix with an underscore

@NathanOsman I'm usually just writing simple scripts. I don't have like super duper API or anything like that. And i am just currious if i can do that only to remove a function from the pydoc, that's all.

If you're not exposing a public ABI, you don't need underscores at all, really.

9:54 PM
@Serg The question is if you need to reference that function from another script.
also, what Nathan said.

Nope, the script is standalone
OK , that's all i needed to know . . .
No API, just simple junk that does one specific task

@NathanOsman API

sounds like my server checker :)
though i can call it from somewhere else if I were bored :)

@edwinksl are their DNS settings the same ? ( just a stab in the dark )

^y u ping mi

9:59 PM
because those misspelling avatars confused my sleep-deprived mind - i thought it was you, but it was actually Nathan
