Mitchbot
@terdon does editing a closed question generate an automatic reopen vote?

@Zacharee1 It puts it in the reopen queue, yes

OK
@Serg we have the close and reopen functions for a reason. If we left a non-English question open and just asked someone to translate it, that translation could take a while, and non-English answers are going to be posted. As soon as a closed question is edited, it gets a reopen vote, and there are so few of those, anyone who can review will want to take a look. — Zacharee1 6 secs ago
so why was braiam suspended, if that's public?
someone needs to learn about sudo askubuntu.com/questions/802757/…

Morning all.

@Zacharee1 The details of suspensions are never public.

ah kk

4:16 PM
Lol, Apple.
> "If the Mac App Store badge appears with badges representing other platforms, place the Mac App Store badge first in the lineup of badges."

for nitroshare?

@NathanOsman those are the terms?

Yes and yes.

what if MS has the same req?

> "Upon Appleā€™s request, You shall supply Apple, at no cost and with no obligation to return, suitable specimens of Your use of the Artwork to verify Your compliance with this Mac Marketing Agreement."
@Zacharee1 You're hooped then.

4:20 PM
lol
Apple is so hateable.

Don't you need to pay $99 for the real developer program so you can make them apps?
what even is this file extension

zip with an x

@Zacharee1 check that eclipse question again, i am not sure why there is a "lock icon" on what is presumably the ~/Downloads directory

weird

Why are cross post not allow?

4:28 PM
because they're annoying

Is unlocking on T-mobile really this easy? support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-21910

@Seth psst lemme tell you a secret

what

quietly it's T-Mobile
of course it's easy

4:31 PM
@terdon not to mention dropping all the inexpensive plans, and making it so employers that had benefits to part-time dropped insurance, and made it so you couldn't use your old doctor because you would be a "new patient" on medicare and they only did what they were required to on accepting in people on that insurance...

they don't care if you leave, because they know you probably won't
(TMO, not insurance)

well I will :P

no
you're not even on them
and you will be on their network, so they're making money

anyway, I'm ranting... but that is what happened here, oh and the place didn't hire on full time people...
@Seth I just buy my own phone and do the prepaid plans

@Mateo he wants to stay on his $7/mo TranFone plan
and TMO phones are cheap

4:35 PM
lol

and TF uses all 4 major networks
but only gives you access to one or something
So @Seth, after this, you're technically going to have T-Mobile :D

is that like 2g or something?

wat

@Zacharee1 Yes.
It's a frustrating annual expense.

lol
we need apps to survive but we're going to make you pay us

4:37 PM
I'm basically paying them to give me a certificate I can use to codesign the app bundles.

geez

oh lol - 200MB

you mean data plan?

If I don't do that, the end users will get GateKeeper warnings.

heh

4:38 PM
@Zacharee1 Were you around when I had the encryption issue?

I don't think so

@Zacharee1 that will get burned through in no time

@Mateo apparently he doesn't use data very much, and it rolls over, so he has a ton when he needs it

@Zacharee1 I had to apply to the US Department of Commerce to get an ERN registration for my app because it used SSL.

o_O
did you get it?

4:39 PM
Yeah, I know.
It took at least two hours.
@Zacharee1 Yes.

well that's good
did you have to pay?

Nope.

that's also good

Thankfully not, or I would probably have given up and just disabled that feature in the app.

but it sounds like a hassle

4:40 PM
It sure was.

APPLE

To be fair, that part wasn't their fault.
You can instead thank your government.

orly

They have absolutely draconian restrictions on encryption export.
3

heheheh
wait till Trump gets office :p
not even Canadians will get in, because of that program to fund a refugee's journey to Canada

4:42 PM
I don't know why headlines like this are surprising when they fight so hard against encryption...
FBI says it is investigating nature and scope of cyber intrusion at Democratic National Committee - Reuters http://www.breakingnews.com/t/Sl

apparently the russians are accused of leaking the DNC emails
good old cold war

...round 2.

@NathanOsman on the other hand, it only took 2 hours. I guarantee you that the same procedure in Greece (after you actually explained what SSL is) would take weeks.

what you guys talkin about?

@terdon I'm not even distributing my app (in the app store) in France for a similar reason.

4:43 PM
@edwinksl new cold war

They have some other form you have to fill in.

@Zacharee1 no, T-MO phones come with unlocked bootloaders ;)
I'm going to use it on AT&T's network.
It won't ever touch T-mobile.

@Zacharee1 uncle sam needs your help in this new war

@Seth why are you using it on ATT?

@NathanOsman Yep, makes sense.
As a French friend told me once, the French replaced absolute monarchy with absolute bureaucracy.
2

4:44 PM
they're terrible

And, having spent a few years living there, I admit that's 100% true.

@Zacharee1 Better coverage.

hmm

@Mateo same

why does T-Mobile not have a full coverage map?
it only shows LTE

4:49 PM
why do you think?

@Seth what's your city?

Puget Sound area.

@Seth Because that's their selling point. But I want to see what 3G or voice I can get
@Seth the map says good coverage near the sound

it always says that

but when you get about 25km away from the shore it gets spottty
is there a more exact place?

4:52 PM
nope.
I go all up and down the east side.

how about that friend?

@Seth Wow, that looks like a fjord! It must have been gorgeous a few hundred years ago.

@Seth So like Seattle, Auburn?

@Zacharee1 sure

says customer verified LTE

4:54 PM
potential m$ employee spotted

@terdon no kidding!

@edwinksl wut

It's still quite pretty, but it must have been even nicer back in the day..

@Seth Is it? It looks very urbanized on Google maps

@terdon It is both. You have to know where to find the untouched parts.

4:55 PM
Ah, OK, still green though.

seattle is a pretty nice place last time i visited except for the rain...

@terdon Very green.

The last time I crossed the border, we went as far as Bellingham.
That was... 2006, I think? :D

I accidentlly flagged the wrong flag for a post how can I undo the flag?

5:08 PM
you can't

@Zacharee1 What! :O

it'll get declined
no big deal

How is Bash's $() syntax called again?

@ByteCommander Command substitution

Isn't that <( ) ?
Or was that process substitution...

5:16 PM
Trump will do an AMA on reddit

the rube goldberg is strong in this askubuntu.com/a/605824/15003

@ByteCommander Yes, <() is process substitution. `` and $() are command substitution.

5:28 PM
That doesn't look good.
But the system still boots.

seems like the hard disk is borked?

It's an SSD.
And the filesystems are running atop LVM.
So it shouldn't be a problem.

ssd about to go to heaven

I'm wondering if this is some sort of kernel bug.
@Rinzwind Believe me, if this SSD crashes, it's not going to heaven.

sure it does :=)
(if you tell it it goes to hell it might die quicker ;-) )

5:31 PM
It shouldn't be dying at all! It's an SSD. It should last for longer than the five years or so I've had it.
Just the same. It may be time to make sure backups are doing their job.

@edwinksl stop messing with my comments! >:-D

@Rinzwind ooooooops

lol

alright you copypastaed the whole paragraph; i will delete my less complete comment ;)

@Rinzwind I can't see it. The signal-to-noise ratio would be too high.

5:36 PM
hihihih vodafone just messed up
i was on 100% of my internet and they forgot to inform me so they are picking up the bill for it >:-D

how much does it cost to go over the cap

Lol, cellular data caps ;)

@edwinksl 2 euro for the next 100mb :=D
I went over during their regular maintanance >:-D

^intentional? :P

yes of course :=D
had to catch a pokemon D:
it is my 1st month. when I got the phone and was opening it up and setting up when waiting for the bus it already download 350mb in updates before I got to the "only update when on wifi" switch _o-
(1st month on a new phone)
in 7 days I am back to 500mb though :D

5:54 PM
because it's speculation and will be opinionated?

@Zacharee1 opinionated.

@Zacharee1 i see you have joined in editing the bluetooth question

idk why she's going to the extra trouble of reverting all our edits

bluetooth: it is gray(!) when it is not running, not loaded or hardware wise not detected :=)

no clue, maybe she thinks we are the ones committing typos

5:58 PM
@Rinzwind well duh

>:-D
@Zacharee1 would have been my comment but someone started before me :=)
SETH HAS ARRIVED
:-)

silent mod strikes again

srsly
@Seth the assassin
who's using ATT
WHO KNEW

I'm actually using Verizon at the moment.

eh, it's about the same as ATT :p

6:10 PM
Argh. Our home Internet has gone up 22% this year alone ą² _ą²

all ISPs are designed to make you suffer

Not the smaller ones.

@NathanOsman and it's still that slow?

@Zacharee1 Welcome to Canada.

well you're pretty far up aren't you?

6:13 PM
Far up?

@NathanOsman Um. 3 up/down for $75?
sharing one IP between 75 users?

wat

It's a dedicated line, I think.

@NathanOsman north

I'm close enough to the border that I can sometimes pick up US carriers on my cell phone... :P

6:14 PM
@NathanOsman oh yeah, you really want that dedicated line. that way you can ensure your 3mbps
@NathanOsman HAXOR

@KazWolfe Roughly 5 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up.
Roughly.

lol

It's a constant speed.

@NathanOsman the average of that is 3

But I think it's ever-so-slightly less than those numbers.

6:15 PM
those cheats

The GB != GiB trick :D

oh, 3 is the absolute peak.

tsk tsk tsk

It's typically around 1 Mbps
on a good day

for you?

6:16 PM
But my cell phone can get up to 15 Mbps down and 4-5 Mbps up.
But of course, that one's not constant.

@NathanOsman yay HSPA+

Yup.

just wait till you get LTE
and lose HSPA+ :p

And the cap of 5 GB/m goes up...

you have no options for that?

6:17 PM
I could pay something like an extra $10 for another 5 GB.
After exceeding the cap, they slow it to 128 Kbps or something.

that's pretty cheap o_O

Really?

Verizon charges $15/GB

Oh my.

Yeah.

6:18 PM
yeah

What about T-mobile?

Did I mention that their home internet cap was 10 GB?

you may not have LTE, but you have good pricing

@KazWolfe OOOOOO_OOOOOO

T-Mo is unlimited entirely, but you get a set amount of LTE before throttling.

6:19 PM
@KazWolfe Sounds like what I have.
Except for the "LTE" part.

30 MB/s (yes MB), cap of 10 GB/mo... $95/mo

@NathanOsman T-Mobile is $15 extra per plan jump 2GB included, 6GB $15, 10GB $30, UNLT $45

Heh.

but like @KazWolfe said, you have unlimited 3G/2G
and a monthly allowance of LTE

That would be nice.

6:20 PM
And T-Mo's data is pretty generous.

and if you get the 6GB/mo plan, you get Binge On

They don't count Pandora/spotify against it

Mine is more like "a monthly allowance of HSPA+ and then dial-up" :P

so free Netflix, YT, and other videos at 480p with no count against LTE

Or YouTube, Netflix, and most other heavy services

6:20 PM
But no torrents :D

it violates net neutrality, but in a good way :p

plus i think t-mo unlimited comes with 18 GB tethering

@NathanOsman well I don't think they throttle those, but they don't give them free
@KazWolfe up to
or do you mean phone tether?

No, I'm paying base unlimited and I get 18GB.

That's one nice thing about my plan. They don't even have a concept of tethering. They give you data and say "we don't care what or how you use it". Tethering doesn't matter at all.

6:21 PM
because data lines have 18GB as a max
@NathanOsman carriers here are weird

Nor does t-mo actually. I've done 25GB tethering and they didn't care.

thankfully, we Android users can easily hide the fact that we are tethering :p

Exactly.

iOS actually can too, shockingly.

It encourages dishonesty.

6:22 PM
@KazWolfe but aren't you deprioritized if you go over?

@KazWolfe O_o

@KazWolfe yeah, but it costs $20

T-Mo android Stock is the only thing that actually checks
@Zacharee1 no, it's free.

yeah, but they can always tell if you're tethering on iOS
@KazWolfe What are you using to hide your tethering?

You're only deprioritized if you're in the top 3% of uses, I think.
@Zacharee1 Stock iOS tether... They see it, but they don't care at all.

6:23 PM
@KazWolfe oh, T-Mobile? yeah
but VZ and ATT will literally send some assassins your way
and not the assassin Seth is

God help you if you have auto-pay on

[ SmokeDetector ] Blacklisted website in answer: Know my windows 8 product key by Ayesha Babar on askubuntu.com ā€¦

huehuehue
that's the assassin
your price is so high you have a stroke or heart attack and die

Donald J Trump on ATT: "WHERE THE HELL DID MY BILLIONS GO?"

"Oops, forgot to turn off roaming."

6:26 PM
verizon has great coverage but they are so expensive.

My brother pays $2 per MB of data on his pay-per-use plan.

@NathanOsman T-Mobile is the answer
@KazWolfe so does T-Mobile now, and it's cheap

I never turn on roaming

@Mateo I never roam

@Zacharee1 In Canada?
I at least have decent roaming rates.

6:27 PM
@NathanOsman a lot of Canada is covered. You happen to be in the one southern deadzone
They partner with someone

And if I paid an extra $10/m I could get free roaming in the US.
(I think it was $10.)
@Zacharee1 Probably Wind (my company).

that's so cheap
@NathanOsman no, it has LTE

But they limit you to 1 GB at full speed.
@Zacharee1 Hmm... then it could be... Rogers, maybe?

maybe
it might be Bell or some ATT ex-subsidiary

Bell has fairly widespread LTE coverage here.
I'm guessing Telus has the largest overall coverage.
They are in a lot of remote regions.

6:30 PM
@Zacharee1 ubuntu phone ;)

There are really only three big companies here - you'll hear other names but they are all cleverly disguised subsidiaries of The Big Three.

lol
like how Sprint has all the US MVNOs?
an article says Canada's top two carriers
and MX's top two, but we don't care about that right now
so it's probably Rogers and Telus

@NathanOsman 10 dollars isn't free...

@Zacharee1 Yeah, that sounds about right.

When I was in the islands a few people I was with roamed on Bell and Telus a few times.

6:34 PM
or do you mean geographically unrestricted?

@Mateo it's freer than normal roaming
@Seth were they T-Mobile people?

I wonder if I roamed in the US if I would get LTE speeds...

@Zacharee1 The T-mobile person roamed on Bell, and I think it was a Verizon phone that roamed on Telus.

@Seth how long ago was this?

Telus and Verizon both used to operate CDMA networks.

6:35 PM
@Zacharee1 2 weeks?

huh

I think they may have had some sort of agreement.

@NathanOsman probably
they both still use CDMA, just not for LTE

Oh? I never pay attention to CDMA anymore.

but apparently they'll be fully GSM by........
2019

6:36 PM
2059.

lol

Telus was supposed to be GSM-only... about five years ago?

maybe they're so expensive because they use a technology that isn't very good :p
@NathanOsman well it's possible, since it sounds like TMO is partnered

Do you know what the company profits look like?

Verizon?

6:37 PM
:P

idk what you're talking about

Have we just spent the last half hour complaining about our cellphone bill? :D

yes
but I probably won't have to soon
TMOBILE HERE I COME
that means I also get reception in the EU

I could get a satellite phone for about $500.
Then I would get reception in most of the planet.

o_O
and $10000 in bills no matter where you go

6:40 PM
@NathanOsman LTE is a GSM technology.

I know.

I figured you must know :D

he didn't know VZ still used CDMA for most of its stuff

@Zacharee1 Oh. Right.

Calvin = Donald Trump confirmed

$1,195.
And then $40 per month.
You get 10 free minutes per month. Nice.

@NathanOsman cheap! lol

But how cool is it to hike up a mountain in Nepal and say, "yo, I haz reception"?

heh
With T-Mobile I might

6:45 PM
"Hi mom, I'm calling you from my boat in the southern pacific."

:p

"Giant 30 ft. shark said to say 'hi'."

famous last words

lol
that looks like and ad for ATT/Samsung

7:47 PM
The Axon 7 US version has CDMA compatibility

7:59 PM
yay 200 rep
