10:00 AM
:) happy days

@Serg Nothing, just observing how all it takes is a photo pf a pretty girl.

@terdon what can i say- i'm basic and shallow

:)
I was thinking you'd get over that what with being in a relationship and all.

@JacobVlijm That was me because I still think the only reason why an otherwise valid answer should be deleted is 1) it is wrong or 2) it is a plagiate of an existing answer.
I think I -1ed all but Serg's answer there...

Nuuu, chinese folks would describe me as 无药可求, no medicine can cure me

10:02 AM
@Serg please don't make me google that...

@ByteCommander you don't have to , the literal translation is right there , "no medicine can cure"

Uh, it started to rain again...

I delete mine if the other one is better. No point in duplicating information. But that's just me. There's nothing wrong with keeping yours. I just, personally, think it just adds noise.

And is that some kind of pun because these symbols also mean something else? I don't understand it...
Or do you refer that to your nightowling?

@terdon agreed to that.

10:04 AM
Whoa, it's heavy rain now.

If the other answer is a superset of mine, I'll delete mine. If mine has a tiny bit of info missing from the other, I'll add the missing info to the other question and delete mine. If mine's different, I'll leave both.

@terdon @ByteCommander That is basically what I am trying to say.

not a pun, it's applicable to whole lot of things. Even to night owling. In case of terdon saying "I'd stop looking at other girls while being in relationship " , that's what i mean cannot be cured

just had my lunch

besides i draw girls . . . like i used to draw portraits
hold on

10:06 AM
@terdon @JacobVlijm But if the ways how you explain something are different, some people might understand one wording better and some the other. Some will prefer a shorter answer, others will prefer more technical details.

@Serg - would superuser.com be the right SE to ask what is the purpose of libimf.so ?

Therefore every correct, not plagiated answer is valid and should not be deleted.

@Serg Good grief, I never said that! I was just hoping you'd stop talking about them on an online chat room is all.

I mean they don't hurt, they only add value.

10:07 AM
@terdon oh . . . that's what you meant . . . .well that too

@ByteCommander Not if they don't add anything new.

@ByteCommander theoretically yes, but in practice, not always true

@gansub unix.stackexchange.com would probably more suitable
it's unix library after all

ok

Nobody forces visitors to read all answers, the can stop after the topmost if they want. So if they did not understand it there, they can read the second answer and see if they understand it better.

10:08 AM
@Serg It's just that it's the very definition of off topic and really not the most welcoming discussion for new users. Especially not for female users.

@ByteCommander digging through a bunch of answers is no fun.
....voting sais something, but not alsways

Well, I guess we have to agree on different opinions here...

@ByteCommander As I said, it's your choice. Personally, I delete mine since I value keeping the site clean over the extra few points of rep I might get from the answer. If mine doesn't add anything not already mentioned in the other one, I see no reason to keep it. But, again, this is a personal choice. There's absolutely nothing wrong with keeping yours if you prefer.

And I don't see why we should hide good and valid content where we put effort in from users.
shrug

...Because it is already there? I regularly delete answers that took me over half an hour

10:11 AM
My rain pipes will overflow if it goes on like that outside... :-/
But it's there in a different shape.

@ByteCommander I don't see why you're arguing. If you want to keep it, keep it. If others feel they prefer to delete theirs if it isn't adding anything useful, let them. There's room for both choices here.

@terdon has anyone ever got offended by what i say ? besides hot is normal American English word. i am not using anything profane or sexist.

@Serg It has bothered me a bit, yes. Not because it's offensive, as such, but because it's in poor taste. I don't want this to be a room where comments like "OMG this girl in my class is so hot!" are common. And yes, the word hot is not quite as neutral as you might think. Beautiful is one thing, hot another.

i like how my gf and best friend are just chatting about translation stuff and im like " i have no bread for sandwich T.T"

But this is terdon the user speaking, I'm not wearing my mod hat.
So feel free to ignore me, I guess :)
I just don't feel such comments are relevant or appropriate here.

10:15 AM
@terdon hey, feel free to use that mod hat. i won't object.

Not if I'm the only one this bothers, no.

Actually "OMG this girl in my class is so hot!" pretty much sounds like @Serg... ;-)

anybody would like to voice an opinion on this ?

I don't care as long as you don't take out the bad words...

Q: What is the purpose of libimf.so?

gansubI was asked to post this question here and if it is not on topic please let me know and I will move the question out. I have an Intel graphics card and I am running Ubuntu 14.04. Twice I have had issues with libimf.so - http://askubuntu.com/questions/802585/x-windows-hanging-during-ubuntu-boot a...

i never take out bad words, i keep everything pg-13 and censored

pg-13?

movie rating system in the us
pg 13 is like teenager friendly

@gansub Your question wasn't off topic. just not very clear. Please see my edit, am I right in assuming that the main question is what that library is for?

10:22 AM
So pg is parental guide or something like that?

i am not sure.
there's E for everyone, PG13 for like teenagers, and R for mature audience. Basically, deadpool is heavy R movie

That would be called FSK in Germany ("Freiwillige Selbst-Kontrolle" = voluntary self-check)
Actually it's not really voluntary at all though, because all movies without FSK label must be sold like 18+ movies.

it would be funnier if it was FSCK

wut ?

10:26 AM
@terdon
thanks a million

Oh, right. That thing has a different abbreviation in English....

@gansub You're welcome

In English FCKW (German "Fluor-Chlor-Kohlenwasserstoff") is CFC: Chlorofluorocarbon

first time hearing thay abbreviation but ok

As I just noticed myself, FCKW is only the German abbreviation. My fault.

10:28 AM
i haven't seen English abbreviation either

Hmmm...

I'm no chemistry major

You don't need a major for that.
CFC was used in old fridges as gas to cool them, but it's highly dangerous for the ozone layer, therefore it's prohibited nowadays.
I guess you already have seen labels like "CFC-free" on cooling devices?
rebooting into windows, starting my tanks

i haven't seen those because i pay only to food inside fridges lol @ByteCommander
*pay attention

10:32 AM
hmm its hot here

i also pay no attention to grammar because i am no English major. Although i wanted to be once
@CodeX mmmhmmm, it sure is

@terdon feeling I should speak up here and say thanks because I don't want to hang out in an environment where objectifying comments are considered OK. Feminist hat.
So far though, I personally didn't feel anyone crossed the line... while I've been in here anyway!

Hmm, let me dive in.

@Zanna Thanks and yes, I don't feel the line has been crossed as such, just approached more than necessary.

@DavidFoerster :D ;)

10:35 AM
we better stay silent xD

anyway, from now on, just to avoid saying hot, i will be saying 373 Kelvin
because science yo

@Serg you don't have any hat ?

@Serg lol :)

@CodeX i have . . . . red hat . . . .

xD

10:36 AM
well actually centos . . . .close enough

@jokerdino Swim away, we've got a Tea-Rex in our pool! ;-)

join our tea party

Thanks everyone for making this a pleasant and safe place for everyone to hang in.

AU chat is the best , we accept pandas, dinos, vorlons, and ubunuts

I feel nooby. My tanks all get nuked like flies.

10:47 AM
Anybody wants to tackle this python question ? askubuntu.com/questions/802653/…
OK keeps having problems with his installation scripts

Wooho! Churchill I shot them all.

hello everyone

hi

I am using wget -O "downloadingurl" to download a file from one server to another

why -O ?

10:56 AM
its overrwritng if previous file with same name exists

But it's wget -O save_as_filename URL, right?

yes my bad i forget to mention filename

ok, so what's the problem you're having ?

but is it possible to get the percentage of file download, like we see in most of the day to day downloaders when we download something we get download progress bar that display percentage of file downloaded..

probably not , there's nothing about that in the manual

Actually . .. it does show percentage

I'm still reading it, but seems like there is a way, using the "progress-dot" option

master.zip          100%[===================>]  61.38K  73.5KB/s    in 0.8s
it was showing different percentage while downloading

@IanC thanks , will try it out now

So, while i am still here, does anyone wanna request another indicator ?

11:07 AM
what did the first indicate?

One is for Caps and Num lock github.com/SergKolo/lks-indicator
Another is for discharge rate of battery github.com/SergKolo/power-flow-indicator

@Serg what indicators did you create? (I am quite irregular on AU due to a good life currently).

@JacobVlijm ^ two github links above

what language did you program them with?
python?

Yup, python
I am doing a lot of python lately
My plan for summer was to learn a different language, but i am doing more python that ever

11:10 AM
I just realized I could get tablet in gold or black as well as white
what should I choose?

pink

@Serg did you sleep?

Nope

Is there professional support available for Ubuntu ?

@Serg I ain't no Apple fanboy. I don't need no pretty Rose Gold

11:11 AM
When I called Dell they said only hardware support NO OS support

@gansub I think so, but why settle for customer service, when you have AU?

@gansub there's support for enterprise and server, but technically we are the official community support site

@Zacharee1 - what if AU cannot answer ?

@gansub try the Ubuntu Forums?

5:12

11:12 AM
@Serg Perhaps, but not professional. No guarantees and absolutely no entitlement.

yea tried that too @Zacharee1

I mean, chances are if we can't help, tech support can't either

@Serg Addicted to Python :-)

What's your question?

@Zacharee1 - OK AU will answer me :-)

11:13 AM
@ByteCommander frankly, it is addictive :p
@JacobVlijm Sorry, that wasn't very good answer. Basically , first one shows status of lock keys, like Caps and Num and Scroll lock. Second one parses upower output to determine battery discharge rate, in both watts and mili amps
@ByteCommander have you listened to Levan Polka i linked a few days ago yet ?

gonna get some rest
see you all later!

o/

@Serg laughs at that word
"rest" hahaha

define "rest" i don't know what that is

@Sergbot

11:19 AM
@Serg yay got the latest version of the lks indicator & the launcher I made for it works :)

@Serg Not until now.

hahahaha! :)

@Serg Thanks! will look into them :)

@JacobVlijm feel free to fork on github. Your account needs some software there

@Serg Yeah, I am a bad maintainer of my github account. Actually a bad maintainer in general...

11:21 AM
@ByteCommander no, that guy probably rm'ed the /dev/gravity Although python does give you wings

@Serg that slogan is trademarked by Red Bull GmbH. Cease your usage of it immediately or else face severe fines and/or jail time

@Zacharee1 OK, python gives you propellers, how about that ? sounds better ?

im doing free advertisement to Red Bull anyway

11:37 AM
@Serg Korpiklaani sounded nice.

ugh. Why are there no amazing Android tablets?
the Tab S2 is nice, but it has the same amount of RAM as my phone, and fewer pixels

I'm starting to dislike Amazon S3...

Q: Problems with new Ubuntu installation

user1551817I recently bought a new HP Spectre x360 laptop and installed Linux (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bit) for the first time. I am seeing various bugs. I don't know if the problems are due to: (a) Hardware problems with the new laptop. (b) Software issues, i.e. Ubuntu not working with the other programs I ...

A: How to properly copy files from hard drive to USB flash drive in tty4 terminal?

Serg Plugin the device lsblk to find the device name of your usb device. Naming is /dev/sdXY. Where X is any english letter and Y is integer, typically 1. udisksctrl mount -b /dev/sdXY , device name same as in previous step. The mount folder will be reported back to you Use rsync or cp or mv to get y...

please double check my answer
i am on mobile, jave to write everything from memory

@Serg what is udisksctl? Why not simply mount?

i just removed an 'r' where you put udisksctrl in one place instead of udisksctl

@ByteCommander udisksctl doesn't need root
@Zanna thank you

it probably will mount automagically but lsblk will show you the mountpoint... I would put an example. Anyway I upvoted
you want me to write one? rummages for usb sticks

sure , that be nice. Or i can add one once i wake up

12:24 PM
I'll do it and you can edit if you want

cool. I'm crashing . Bye for now and thanks for editing.

done... hope I did it OK
later :) xxx

@Serg Okay? Learned something today, I guess... :)

12:40 PM
also, I think umount is irreversible? like you can't mount after you umount?
but in udisksctl you can mount and unmount as many times as you like

o.O?
I think you only can no longer mount after ejecting a device.

user image

it's entirely likely that I'm wrong... but if I noticed that if I sudo umount a USB stick then I can't sudo mount it... ima test...

@Zanna actually @ByteCommander is correct mounting and unmounting are multi-action. Eject option in udisksctl actually powers off usb bus ,so you can't remount after that

it says cannot find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab
but I can use udisksctl to mount it
also as I thought I don't have eject in my udisksctl (I thought you went to sleep Serg...)

12:48 PM
@Zanna Sure you can.
USB might be different, the device name can change.

I don't think the other two answerers even read the question askubuntu.com/q/802157/274320

@terdon I'm sure you're right, but change of name is not the reason I can't do it, I do lsblk again first and use the correct name

And yet you can't mount it? That seems odd.
Oh, hang on, how are you mounting it? If you're getting the "can't find in fstab" error, you're probably not giving a mountpoint.
Are you just running mount /dev/sda1?

aaaahhh yes
that's it

That'll do it.

12:53 PM
using udiskctl you don't have to give a mountpoint, it will make one for you, so there's another difference :)

@AndroidDev No, the question is about extending a virtual disk, the guest OS is irrelevant.

@terdon Okay.

Yep, unclear.
If I stop a firewall, start downloading something and then start the firewall again, won't that stop the downloading process?

@terdon Wouldn't that be dependent on the rules you've configured?

1:03 PM
No idea. I haven't set this thing up. I am working on a system that restarts the firewall on the hour, every hour. I stopped it so I could download something and it started again when the hour changed. But, and to my surprise, the download was unaffected.

interesting!

@Zanna?
@terdon - <sigh> 90 views and still nothing :( askubuntu.com/questions/796067/state-of-amd-drivers-in-16-04

And? Why ping me about it?

@terdon Thought you might know something...

Oh. No, no idea. I can tell you that the question seems too broad though.
And it would benefit from a little research. Have you tried finding any information about those? Even apt-cache show should help.

1:08 PM
@AndroidDev A bounty could also help...

First hit searching for "amdgpu"
AMDGPU is AMD's new fully open source unified graphics driver for Linux. AMDGPU currently only supports cards built upon GCN 1.2 or higher, previous cards are not supported yet. GCN 1.2 includes Carrizo APUs, the Fury lineup, and the R9 380. AMDGPU also has an optional closed-source component that operates on top of the open source AMDGPU for better intensive 3D application support known as AMDGPU-PRO. == References... ==
Actually, all of those should be answerable with 5 minutes of googling. Or, at least, some of them.

@ByteCommander The thing is, if I set a bounty, and nobody answers, I don't get my rep back :(

Nobody is likely to answer unless you fix the question up a little. Seriously, do some research and answer the easy ones yourself and then, ideally, split it up into separate questions.

@terdon Okay....
@terdon Is it possible to do superscript for references?

@AndroidDev You can use foo, yes.

1:13 PM
@AndroidDev why did you ping me, what can I do for you (given that I even forgot to specify a mountpoint to the mount command already today)?

@Zanna You said "interesting!" and I was wondering what that was about.

oh I was just interested in terdon's firewall/download phenomenon

I know. And that's my strongest objection to Serg's meta post about translating. The language is almost always the least of the post's problems.

I thought the whole point of being able to reopen questions was that they might be improved after they've been closed
so we close non-English questions so as to avoid non-English answers

@terdon that seems to be my experience too although i don't have numbers to back it up
