Q: Remove all files, except for two

Fátima AlvesI would like to delete everything in one folder, with exception of two files: exec.js .git I found this: rm !(exec.js|.git) Which works in the CL, but when i try to store in a sh file, and call with bash file.sh, this happens: test.sh: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token (' test.sh:...

@CodeX what are you doing?

9:39 PM
there are sandboxes ;)

reading help and trying it @Zacharee1

@CodeX there's no space for the link

feel free to do sandbox if ou want to

what's the rm -rf easter egg?

hmm I will try sandbox

@Zacharee1 there is an alias preventing you to do a rm -rf / on debian systems

9:42 PM
yeah?

unless your root and does --no--preserve--root

but doing that on a real system and then founding out it did not work is a bit .... descructive

?
I don't understand

in my chatroom easter egg

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD @CodeX This is a google link

9:43 PM
typing rm -rf / causes your screen to go blank temporaraly

in the chat?

there you go, that is how it is done ;)

@Zacharee1 yes.

@Zacharee1 so you can use that sandbox to type rm commands ;)

@Mateo Cool

9:44 PM
they actually work?

I will try rm -rf / on a virtual machine

@Zacharee1 no >:-D
unless you type them in a terminal :-D :-D

@IanC make sure you don't have uefi

uefi? isn't that something from bios?

9:46 PM
it doesn't happen here to does it?

because there were some machines where the drive for the uefi would get mounted, and doing that would brick the maching

@Mateo lol

daaaamn, like, virtualbox would mount the real machine bootloader???
that doesn't sounds really wise :p

not sure if it would happen in a vm, but if it was mounted in a normal install, I could see where it would mount it the same on the vm...

9:48 PM
probably vm makes a copy of it or something
otherwise a virus on a vm machine could brick your computer
but I'm not sure, I'm just a newbie, not even really sure what exactly is uefi lol

@IanC \/
The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI, pronounced as an initialism U-E-F-I or like "unify" without the n) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. UEFI replaces the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface originally present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers, with most UEFI firmware implementations providing legacy support for BIOS services. UEFI can support remote diagnostics and repair of computers, even with no operating system installed. Intel developed the original Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI...

I wanted to try ':(){ :|: &};:' too, but I think it would freeze my computer even running in a VM (or at least make it very slow, depending on how much RAM I dedicate to the virtual machine)

so hopefully safe in a vm, but I still wouldn't recommend doing that command at all ;)

@IanC just dont give the vm 100% of your cpu to test so you can switch it off (for the forkbomb I mean)
90% cpu to the vm should suffice

^sounds like someone has tried it before in a vm

9:52 PM
@edwinksl he doesn't sleep. gotta do something

@Mateo 0 stars? tsk
:p

Spaces webapp is now in the ubuntu store
@Zacharee1 just pushed it like 5 min ago ;)

so many apps by you!

@edwinksl indeed i have toyed around with all possible nasty stuff :)

9:55 PM
@Mateo I think my machine doesn't use UEFI, and even though I don't know much about it I've seem only bad aspects of it. I mean, heard about dual boot problems with UEFI, now this big vulnerability

@Videonauth we need people like you to do nasty stuffs so the rest of us don't have to :P

@edwinksl all webapps and scopes ;)

it's not a vulnerability @IanC

@edwinksl if I do not try things like that myself how do you expect me to solve problems related to it? >:-D

EFI isn't mounted by default in any OS

9:55 PM
@Videonauth I usually allocate 512mb of RAM, but even that way, opening 2 virtual machines can get quite slow sometimes (having 4Gb I would expect 1Gb wouldn't slow the system sooo much)

@IanC easy fix: don't make a dual boot >:-D

just a configuration feature, and user error scenario ;)

@Zacharee1, oh, I thought it was mounted by default, less bad

@Rinzwind that's also true... time to attempt to brick my system xD

lol

9:57 PM
@Rinzwind, that sounds more like a limitation than a fix :p
I'm not sure if it's an issue for both linux distros dual boot or only to windows/linux dualboot

@IanC it is windows + anythign else.

But it'll only happen if you erase the disk from a Unix-based system
Since those OSes mount drives as FOLDERS (@edwinksl)
Windows has everything separate

GAH FOLDERS

well, in that case it wouldn't affect me :)
You know why exactly it isn't possible to do win+anything else with UEFI? @Rinzwind

@Zacharee1 knows his stuff :=)

10:00 PM
@IanC It's completely possible to run Windows with other OSes with UEFI

@IanC no you can do dual boot with uefi window and linux
that's not the issue ;-)

it's just that it can be annoying at times, since Windows wants to make its BL the top priority

Microsoft being Microsoft
they will be trying to write over the grub through UEFI?

no

microsoft always has ignored other operating systems. and thus any support for it.

10:01 PM
Windows' bootloader will just take priority
the EFI partition is a FAT32 partition, usually about 100MB
it's the first partition on your drive
it stores the EFI bootloader files for every OS you have installed
it's even sorted into folders (@edwinksl)

ahh MY LEAD
I HAVE TO MASH THE A BUTTON

There's some sort of priority system (idk how it works) that tells the machine what to boot

@Zacharee1,
So windows will try to keep his bootloader in priority everytime the system is booted?

Windows likes to make itself the top priority, which is why GRUB breaks after a Windows install

oooh, it's during the install

10:04 PM
some upgrades do it too

the workaround is to always install linux after windows or am I being too simplistic?

yes

@IanC you can. but there is also "boot repair"

just install Linux or whatever else after Windows
@Rinzwind which may or may not work

@Zacharee1 yeah with mixed results :D

10:05 PM
or simply skip windows altogether and live happily ever after :p

So if you have the option, install the secondary OS after Windows

I never had it not work though :D

>:( @Videonauth

@Videonauth without MS Office, good sound, AMD DRIVERS

@Videonauth I already proposed that
I -always- do a virtualbox install of windows if I need windows stuff.

10:06 PM
ms office is the work of satan

@Rinzwind I have. It's also just a hassle to download it all and have to fix stuff, when it could have been avoided easily

~Mash that A button, just mash it, mash it~

@edwinksl yeah, but schools don't like Google Office
and no one likes LibreOffice >:P

@Zacharee1 sad truth :(

and I need windows for some vpn connection For all other things I have ubuntu and a PS4

10:07 PM
^console peasant spotted

@edwinksl good luck with that Cisco VPN on your Linux

I have only linux distros on my computer, but can see why it might be useful to have windows on another partition for some people (even though I've been increasingly hating windows)

or even SSTP

@edwinksl I have a nitendo 64,xbox 360, gameboy and a sega genisis. So am I, a consolee hog?

@Zacharee1 cisco openconnect works perfectly on linux

10:08 PM
rly

yes

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD idk about console hog, but you sure resemble a spambot

well 1 flaw >:-D

it shows a crash report on every boot >:-D

10:09 PM
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD sega genesis??? lol

@Rinzwind 1-4 depending on if you upgraded

So, SM-T813 (Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 Snapdragon). Opinions?

@Zacharee1 oh and the other one works too. The one with the sms thingy they made for W10
(i forgot how they named it :P )

act normal! act normal!!!

10:11 PM
@Rinzwind wut

a found it "netscaler unified gateway"

wut2

@Zacharee1 that's another vpn that works flawlessly on Ubuntu ;-)

ah

I have about 9 or so at work set up ;-)
for all the others: teamviewer <3
could I bug someone for 1 upvote? >:-D

10:13 PM
for some reason TeamViewer is always slower when I choose to optimize the connection for speed
@Rinzwind maybe.................
Don't let Jacob see this...

@Zacharee1 1 more to max out ;-)
yay 200 <3
122/150 28 to go

I expect 20 upvotes :p

that would be serial upvoting :+)

shh
ok, really don't tell Jacob

I own his ass so no worries :+

10:18 PM
welp

@Zanna i was curious why your python symlink answer got a downvote

who starred that? o-O

always the same person downvotes me... also edited the post to remove tag @edwinksl

huh?

@Zacharee1 Jacob who?

10:19 PM
@Zanna if that is the case he'll get caught :=)

Vlijm

I know where he lives so no worries :+)

dun dun dun

downvotes make me sad

10:21 PM
downvotes make everyone sad

@Zanna downvotes make me retailiate :+)

i don't see a good reason

downvotes make me MAD

me too.

so i am confused

10:22 PM
i think he downvoted because he doesn't like the question, not because there is anything wrong with my answer

you're not supposed to do that

@Rinzwind the heat has arrived here now.
So I can sympathize with you.
Stupid sun.

10:27 PM
@Rinzwind I live on the coast, so I know all about humidity and heat.
It often reaches 80-90% humidity here.

we had 100% humidity a few hours ago :+)

@Rinzwind stop

We've had that too.

@Zacharee1 hammer time!

Lol.

10:29 PM

That never ceases to be funny.

@Rinzwind agh

@NathanOsman hit the return key on the keyboard

@Rinzwind nope. Didn't work.

@Zacharee1 sure I can, I just don't want to ;)

Time to start planning my Christmas light display.

@edwinksl thanks for mentioning that downvote btw, made me feel better :)

:)

11:08 PM
:)

11:26 PM
@NathanOsman wat

christmas light display eh?

Didn't you guys see what I did last year? :)
I bought a solid-state relay and wired the tree lights to my Raspberry Pi.

no

Then I wrote an app that samples Pulseaudio and makes the lights flash when the vu exceeds a certain value.

lol

11:36 PM
I only had the parts to wire the lights to a single channel last year.

and you said that concert was annoying

This year I'm going to have lots of channels.
What concert?

I'm sure your neighbors will love you
@NathanOsman the Zedd thing a few weeks ago?

It's an apartment so they will really love me.

lol

11:37 PM
@Zacharee1 my memory is failing me...

srsly

It is!
I'll probably remember if you say something about what it was.

11:39 PM
Ooooooooh.
Right.

sigh

Yeah this is going to be metal and classical music
No electronic junk.

I just need to figure out some parts.
Switching 120V AC from a wall socket can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing.

i wonder if debian has a startup sound

11:46 PM
I don't remember it having one.

@NathanOsman as I found out when I idly touched two contacts in an open outlet once.

@Seth ouch!

lets just say it gave me quite a shock xD

sad_trombone.mp3

11:49 PM
when I was little I remember getting shocked by a power outlet.
lets say that was shocking :P

about to drop a new google keep webapp in the ubuntu phone store ;)
someone did one, but they kept the browser bar, and images didn't work on it

@Mateo oh cool.
That would be something I'd use.

did you see the link on the star wall, I put up a spaces web app

Yeah, I saw the tweet.

looks like google plus, but less social, more organizational content based
and more of a phone chat for the comments

11:53 PM
I tried out the Android app.
I think I started a space for 2buntu.
