A little depressing actually

Hello everyone :)
Does anyone use Arch-Linux here ?
I am in the middle of an installation and I have one doubt.

terdon does
not sure who else
maybe Videonauth

okay:) @terdon Is it compulsory to have a /boot partition ? (using UEFI, I already have a 512 MB ESP )
clean Installation
on Arch-Linux

RIP 31 minecraft servers
FREAKING MOJANG EULA

@Videonauth any ideas ?]
Okay, I think I have to ask this in sth other chatroom

doesn't look like they are here
try U&L?
or post in the AL forums

8:52 AM
@edwinksl Nobody in U&L :(

so maybe AL forums
or reddit

I am new to both . Where to start ?

classic bulletin style forums
just post and wait

I got some help :) U&L

yeah but i don't think the level of support for arch on U&L is as good as on the AL forums; i could be wrong though

9:00 AM
okay. Let me try on both

woops*
these numbers are hashed
Mojang is now blacklisting servers that don't comply with the EULA
RIP
@SmokeDetector take a breakk

@SeverusTux managed to find help?

@cl-netbox: Ok, well, the big news about this country was unexpected... At least, I didn't expect this... So we will see how it goes... I think I will speed up my move to Japan...

@ParanoidPanda why japan?

anime, sushi.
why not?

language

giant mecha stalking aliens in the streets of tokyo?

10:13 AM
giff godzilla plox
kaiju showdown in downtown tokyo

@JourneymanGeek those O
every other day you get to watch Tokyo Tower destroyed :D

seems like fun, i would move to japan to see that

user136984
@edwinksl: I've already started learning that language and it turns out I have a brain and memory for learning new languages easily so it's actually going rather well. :)

user136984
I just really love Japanese culture and the landscape and everything I would love to go there and run away from collapsing Europe.

@ParanoidPanda that's a good start but nowhere close to full assimilation into japanese society

user136984
10:16 AM
I know...

i am not sure how else to say it but to say don't bother

user136984
Nope, I'm going to bother! ;D

a japanese girl I know that was born in Holland (parents Japanese migrants) went back to Japan at 25. Learned Japanese up to 25 and when she was in Japan she was considered speaking Japanese as a 10 year old.

user136984
Oh dear... Well, I think I'm doing slightly better than that... I've got the pronunciation right and I get all the grammar and stuff I've learned so far so I see no real reason for it to go that badly... But we will see! :D

user136984
I'm not the sort of person who easily gives up.

10:21 AM
lol say that again.

user136984
What do you mean?

user136984
In what I strongly believe I don't give up easily.

@Rinzwind yeah, they have spares so they can just fly it in place every morning

it is also made of cardboard >:-D

that explains why they are taken down with such ease all the damn time

10:25 AM
yup

user136984
@jokerdino: I felt so strongly about a typo is some documentation once that I had to change how my entire email system worked in order to report it and that took about half a day... But I was determined, and about a year after I reported it, I received an email to say it was fixed... :D

so you made them waste half a year for 1 typo? >:)

11:12 AM
So that's probably why you can't find sleep @Videonauth ^ :D

@ByteCommander if that would be that easy

Oh, there are many people who are wrong on the internet... Too many.

good thing we have people to fight the good fight against ignorance

Though the ignorants outnumber the good people.

There's a difference between being wrong and learning and being willfully incorrect though

11:15 AM
^

it is not always immediately obvious

Or just refusing to learn.

@BharadwajRaju see: willfully incorrect :p
phone manufacturers and carriers need to make it so that once your warranty is up and your phone is paid off, you can easily unlock the bootloader
they can't be held liable if something goes wrong after 2 years
or maybe have you sign something saying the carrier and manufacturer are no longer responsible

or simply dump that we need to lock down everything from the dumb user policy altogether
at least i bought my phone, without any plan

I've seen posts on XDA from the idiots, and the policy is a good idea; it just needs severe revision

11:23 AM
so i own that device from the start but im not able to change anything significant because of locks everywhere

yurp
but remember, with iPhones, you own the device but only lease the OS
@ParanoidPanda I find the typo in your message rather ironic

user136984
@Zacharee1: Which typo?

@ParanoidPanda "I felt so strongly about a typo is some documentation"

user136984
Oh dear... :D

:p

11:34 AM
@AndroidDev you need to have a certain amount of reputation for posting images, or better to day using the automated methods, if they would know how to post the images by hand they certainly could do

well that spam got killed fast

you didn't get to flag it?

no :(
:p

0
Q: Can new users post images?

Android DevIf you are a new user, are you allowed to post images (where they are visible in the body)? Or, are people just lazy? @Videonauth has probably done 100s of "made image viable" edits.

@AskUbuntuMeta Thanks meta for pinging me ;)

@edwinksl "please get back at me at any time" xD
ah, prepositions

that too, oops
i wish people didn't sign their names though. waste of space and useless info

@edwinksl how good are you with python?

not good

or maybe jacob can answer that

i have this lines of code, will the global set variable be avaiable within the function?
char_set="abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!$%&/()=?+*'#-_.:,;<>|~\\}][{ "

def get_single_char():
    returnvalue= random.randint(0,255)
    if chr(returnvalue) in char_set:
        return chr(returnvalue)
    else:
        get_single_char()
mhmm ok seems yes it will be avaiable

yeah it will be

still doesn't do what i want it to do

@Videonauth you good with Arch ?

It will be available.

11:55 AM
i tested it with a minimal example

returns None far to often

But you'Re overcomplicating things.

@ByteCommander well yes i guess so im trying to rewirte my password generator in python

First, it would have to be else: return get_single_char()

ah kk

11:56 AM
lol

damn didnt see that

n00b misteakz

But there's already a module that helps you.

@ByteCommander well its just toying around to get the grip of the language

11:58 AM
// the usable charset
std::string charset = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!$%&/()=?+*'#-_.:,;<>|~\\}][{ ";

unsigned char getsinglechar();
std::string makepasswd(unsigned int letters);

// randomize char
unsigned char getsinglechar()
{
    char returnvalue = rand() % 255;
    if(charset.find(returnvalue) != std::string::npos)
    {
        return returnvalue;
    }
    else
    {
        return getsinglechar();
    }
}

// password routine
std::string makepasswd(unsigned int letters)
thats how it looks like in c++

@Videonauth it's like a really stripped down JS

@Videonauth Yuck!

there are more "pythonic" ways to do it
SO has plenty of answers, go check them out ;)

>>> import random
>>> char_set="abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!$%&/()=?+*'#-_.:,;<>|~\\}][{ "
>>> def get_single_char():
...   return random.choice(char_set)

>>> "".join(get_single_char() for _ in range(20))
'%sFM*nuEk= O}>KSvg{/'

@ByteCommander yeah yeah yeah not the nicest code ;) but it does what i want it to do

12:01 PM
You could actually compress that Python code above into a single line if you want...

There was a senior at my school who was very particular about her formatting in C++
I always wanted to email her a ~100 line piece of code condensed into one line

^lmao
i suppose minifying c++ is a thing

@ByteCommander makes sense ok i really have to get the grip of it, in c++ you really have to do everything step by step

minified js gives me headaches

minified css is headache pure

12:05 PM
but many bandwidthz haz been saved
all for the greater good

yep

user136984
Important Kernel updates will be available soon by the way on Wily and Xenial. I don't know about the other versions, I haven't received any notifications about them yet. The updates are currently in *-proposed, but should be available soon. Just thought I'd give you all a heads up. :)

what version?

erm 28 is finally out yet ?
im far to long (one day) lingering at .27
;)

yeah i am on .27 for a day and it feels forever

12:07 PM
Generate 20 character password with 1 single line of Python:

user136984
It says the versions are 4.4.0-28.47 and 4.2.0-41.48.

import random; print("".join(random.choice("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!$%&/()=?+*'#-_.:,;<>|~\\}][{ ") for _ in range(20)))

^nice

It could probably get further golfed by importing the character set instead of writing the whole alphabet yourself.

yes sure, but this way you have a definitive set of characters, what is what i want in this case, German keyboard type-able characters

12:11 PM
@Videonauth to make a really secure password, you need Chinese, Vietnamese, Latin and Aramaic characters :p
And the blood of a firstborn, but that can be added at a later stage >:D

but that is so difficult to type/remember that i will save the password in plain text called PASSWORD.TXT and the password isn't really secure

yes and dont forget the spidersilk

Golfed to 133 bytes:
import random as R,string as S;print("".join(R.choice(S.ascii_letters+S.digits+"!$%&/()=?+*'#-_.:,;<>|~\\}][{ ")for _ in range(20)))
2

@edwinksl Then you encrypt the file with the password contained
Because that makes sense

2 difficult 4 me

12:14 PM
@edwinksl in fact I'm saving my passwords which are far to long to remember in a txt file ;) on an encrypted USB stick which normally lies in a safe

@Videonauth is it encrypted with one of the passwords?
opinions?

Let me guess, in those rare occasions that you sleep, you sleep in front of that safe?

@Zacharee1 nope, with a 64 character long random password which i have remembered

RFC 1149.5 specifies 4 as the standard IEEE-vetted random number.
3
This random one? ^

lolol
xkcd 221, i will memorize that

12:16 PM
@ByteCommander Yes, @Videonauth is a self-employed guard dog

@Zacharee1 i think both you and pilot have valid points. no reason why we should agree with each other all the time

Yeah, but I don't think DVs were warranted

@ByteCommander more like this (only example, dont get funny thoughts) --> znIj69DbOtFq}aKT [$lsNeYxL]5%>M\ZVp{.-r+;3#Q_H1k|c<vUwm4=(!f?7~&

How the hack should one remember that!!?? o.O

12:18 PM
@ByteCommander magic

correct horse battery staple

@BharadwajRaju yes!

@ByteCommander doesn't take long I have a knack for memorizing such things

But on the other hand:
Huh?

@ByteCommander xD

12:21 PM
Those two posts should have been the other way round.
Crappy WiFi.

Why can this guy just get the idea that he needs to post this as answer on the other question? It doesn't answer this one, it answers the other one for god sake! The one I sent him the link to!

He's got 3k... He should know at least how to use the site to answer the correct question...

@ParanoidPanda why can't you just stop making typos? :P

@ParanoidPanda He's moved said answer

Q: USB flash drive stuck in RO after DDing ISO

Android DevI ran: sudo dd if="ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso" of="/dev/sdb" bs=4M In order to create a bootable USB drive. However, after I was done with it, I wanted to format it as FAT32 and use it like a normal USB drive. No problem, should be easy, right? WRONG. I have tried: Using the included ...

@Videonauth - There's my story from yesterday ^^^ :)

I feel accomplished:
Only three tabs
omg

@Zacharee1 You do realize your personal email address is visible in that photo...

Heather deleted her MC too :(
@AndroidDev yeah, not like people can see it on my profile
realize?
ok, not on my profile, but it's on my site :p

@Zacharee1 Yep, spell check decided I wanted to say something else.

and that's on my profile
@AndroidDev it just doesn't........realize

I remember the days I did Ask Ubuntu from Windows... when my computer was dead and I had no Linux

@ThomasW. Just try to use proprietary audio on Ubuntu

@Zacharee1 Been there, done that, this is why I custombuild computers to fit my needs :P

@ThomasW. why do you always remove messages?

@Zacharee1 Because that one didn't deserve to exist :)

@ThomasW. custom-built laptop? I'll have to look into that....
@ThomasW. harsh
"windows..."

2:57 PM
@Zacharee1 I just pay Dell extra to build the laptop with the specs of a model they did previously - it fits things better

hmm

@Zacharee1 I also never finished that one but Chrome derped and hit send

But does it game?
lol

@Zacharee1 For some games :P I keep a Windows around on the other partition only for gaming
day to day is Linux :)

But does it do well?

2:58 PM
yay, the coffee is here! rejoices as the coffee, and also the egg omelette he ordered arrives (brb)

gimme

@Zacharee1 yesit does. Modern hardware, but specific chipset, wifi card, etc. from certain manufacturers to fit certain drivers

hmm

AMD graphics card, Intel wifi, Intel chipset
core i7 processor too

oh ew

3:04 PM
i've actually had this one for 3 years :P

not good for Linux

@Zacharee1 actually it runs good under Open Source drivers
but I keep Windows for the hardcore gaming
I need the CPU and RAM for the LInux stuff :p

hmm

because i do development and coding and stuff

ugh
Apparently my Spigot server is 50 versions behind

I have absolutely no idea why people like it that much, but of course I'm happy about it.

Q: Is it safe to keep a MacBook in the fridge to cool it down?

kenorbI've a got longstanding problem with laptops overheating (MacBook Air/Pro) and it's not only related to one machine. The laptops are overheating especially during hot days (summer). I've found that keeping them in the fridge for half an hour makes a dramatic difference in their performance. Howe...

o.O!

Maybe this Grub is part of the answer, but obviously I couldn't know that (hence the question). Many other people new to Ubuntu won't know either. Therefore marking this as a duplicate makes no sense to me. — poepje 23 mins ago

Good morning.
I think the battery on my wireless keyboard is starting to die...

@Zacharee1 part 2 is there too ;)

Why can't anyone see that dropping 3.5mm sockets is a bad idea?
Especially when the physical equivalent is fraught with problems.
