9:00 PM
@Fabby I will.

:) ;)

What if the system is moving a big file and the directory seems empty at the moment, but more files will appear later?

@Serg well I have a big red button here...

@ArtOfCode <.<

@ArtOfCode Do you collect weird recipes and are interested in French fries tart, dog shit and cat vomit?
French fries tart = apple tart, just cut the apples like french fries
Dog shit = Chocolate mousse but put it in a plastic bag, cut off a tip and press it into the form of a turd

9:13 PM
aside from the naming it sounds nice

Cat vomit = chicken fillet, white mushrooms in a cream sauce (looks like the real thing)
@Serg kids love my menus! :smirk:
I have drunken bear curry too: rice in the form of a teddy bear, add eyes that look crossed, pour curry around it.
I should take pictures next time and post them

@Fabby - Got your message. Done :)

OK... lemme go back too!
@ThatGuy done!
:)
Sorry about earlier... Mint is just a red flag to me...

Did you invent those names or was that somebody else's idea?

@ByteCommander Cat vomit was actually someone else's idea...
(and that's how it started)
I just spent 2 hours making "Vol-au-vent" when some American told me:
'Urg, this looks like the cat has eaten it already and vomited afterwards!"

9:19 PM
creativity comes from unexpected places

@Fabby - I started coming into the chat to learn more. I shouldn't have taken your comment personally, I'm sorry. It was silly and petty of me. I woke up this morning to a comment that said "Don't answer off-topic, and I downvoted". It kinda just broke my brain after only 4 hours sleep. Cheers for discussing it though, and I'll just run with it next time. I find it hard to separate my answers from my personal feelings. I'm working on it! Promise! :)

:D
I used to be like you...
Always leave a comment when someone else leaves a comment...
Random down-votes you can do nothing about but I always leave a comment when I downvote and sometimes it's for the better!
(like now)
:P ;)

@ThatGuy that's the spirit. Keep working on that. Kudos

@ThatGuy Are you from Antarctica???
(somewhere South; can't get more South then that!) :D

@Fabby those are these little cans made of puff pastry filled with stuff like peas, tiny carrots and mushrooms?

9:22 PM
Yeah. It's difficult to not take it personally. I love the idea of a purely educational, and non emotional place, but the reality is after spending 30 minutes working on an answer and someone downvotes, it's like saying "Your answer is bad, and you should feel bad". LOL

yeah, filled with chicken, meatballs and mushrooms where I live...

@Serg Cheers :)

@ThatGuy :D :D :D

@Fabby - Nah, New Zealand here :)

Yup! I have a few deleted answers like that!
@ThatGuy Ah! South Island???
>:)

9:23 PM
No, top of the North Island here. Beautiful and sunny :)

Number 1 of places to visit for me!

@Zanna 32 :D

NZ, Madagascar, Egypt.

YAY! Well, the doors always open if you're ever down this way.

@Fabby good to know

9:24 PM
:D

@edwinksl Oooh exciting!

Guess who just ordered his first 3D printer! :D

@Zanna But then: I'm an a-sexual alien life form...

@ThatGuy i know because in the beginning i started out like that too. Just learn from the comments.

@ThatGuy going to make a gun???
;)

9:25 PM
@Serg - I try to. I tend to take the comments with a grain of salt, and use what information they provide, to better my answer.

@Serg He answered a minty question that is applicable to Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, ...
I saw "MINT" and went for the close button!

@Fabby - No, according to my wife, I will be making her clothes pegs, and coat hangers etc.

:D :D :D
@ThatGuy Woohoo!
That's how you sold it to her, didn't you???

Shhhhhh....

@Fabby if it's still applicable to Ubuntu, it's ok to let it be

9:27 PM
You actually plan on making rocket-launchers, guns, ...

She'll hear you with her demon ears...

@Serg Yeah, but that was only obvious from our conversation in the comments...
(I left a comment not to answer off-topic questions)

@Serg - We got it sorted though :)

And then he said "but my answer applies to a ton of distros!"

do you guys ever just sit down and watch the sky roll ?

9:29 PM
(I didn't originally even read the answer, just saw a big red "MINT" question...)
@Serg Not since I was 10...
Should I?

@Serg - I used to be like you. Young and naive to the ways of the world. Innocent and in awe of such natural phenomena. Then I got married and had kids... That fades awfully quick. J/K XD

SMOKE! BRB...

@Fabby exactly, you were speaking for yourself, and it's nice to know, but it doesn't change what I said, that only white folks have the luxury of ignoring race
@Serg totally :) :) :)

@Fabby only if you want to :)

This is an interesting question:
2
Q: How to compress , keep and empty original file with gzip

Ahmed JerbiFor some reason I'm not being able to use logotate to compress files periodically. So I decided to write my own script, it's not the most hard thing but one small detail is pinning me down. When using zip to compress the file , logrotate keeps the original files and empty them. I can use gzip the...

9:33 PM
Yeah I upped it...
Tempted to dash home to my laptop and play around

I actually have no idea whether this is possible at all.
If we assume the file is opened and new data is constantly streaming in...
Would write access be possible at all in that case?

Ima read the logrotate script... I'll learn something if not find an answer :)

@Zanna You've never worked in Africa, right?
Believe me when I tell you that's total, utter bovine excrement...

@Fabby never even been there

I rest my case, your honour!
:)
There are racists everywhere,
as there are xenophobes,
rotten personalities,
murderers,
terrorists, ...
But, most people are just nice!
:)

9:38 PM
Isn't it like that everywhere?

yup, that was my point: doesn't matter if you're white, black, red, yellow, a green martian or a blue smurf...
Parents matter a lot, schools does and friends do...
Climate does too! People in Africa are generally happier then us folks...
Most people in Africa have 2-3 kids nowadays...
and TV, a fridge, the latest smartphone, ...
Anyway...
Enough philosophy for today:
time to go to sleep!
(I'm dead tired!)

There is a very well researched inverse correlation between income and having children.

Indeed! And Africans know it too!

I may have found a solution to my uWSGI predicament.
Haven't tested it in production though yet.

In general, the higher the total income of a family, the less children they have. Unless you are just so wealthy you adopt children from 3rd world nations as a status symbol :)

9:45 PM
I aim to be the one exception to that.
Lots of kids and enough money to support them all :D
But if I can't have both then I just want lots of kids :P

@NathanOsman - It's not really a rule, just a generalization. :)

@Fabby if you're saying that some black folks in Africa are not keen on white folks, then I'd say they have a point. And it's pretty tiresome when white folks define racism as some kind of personal distaste so we can plausibly make ourselves possible victims of it and kick the entire history and present reality of white supremacy conveniently into the long grass

Everyone is capable of racism, regardless of their ancestry; culture or heritage.
3

Spoke too soon. Still getting the same bug.
:(

@NathanOsman Did you try turning it off and on again?

9:50 PM
@Zanna Did you see askubuntu.com/a/857443/367990 ?

@ThatGuy not by my definition...
@ByteCommander hmmm interesting :)
Some good questions today :)

not broadly applicable though as not every application has a way to get told to reopen the log file

@ThatGuy yes.

It could also have written (or tried to) some bytes in the short time frame between compressing/deleting and recreating/reloading.

@Zanna I agree with ThatGuy...

9:56 PM
So I would not consider the described method 100% safe either.

You should go to Africa and experience it first-hand... Lots of your opinions about racism will change...

@ThatGuy hmm in fact I can agree with that, only not that not everyone can be a victim of racism

@NathanOsman Sorry. It's the I.T. Crowd coming out in me... It had to be done XD

I haven't restarted the server of course; hopefully I never need to restart it.

@Zanna Everyone is capable of being a victim of racism...

10:02 PM
@Fabby South Africa , maybe. The US isn't that bad of a place for that either

@Zanna I think I should abstain from any further involvement this one. It's something I know you're passionate about, and I shouldn't interfere. Sorry. Hold to your passions though, good on you :) PS. I'm not trying to be condescending, just think I should disentangle myself from any politics.

South Africa is still racist: just the other way around now... :(

@Fabby that's exactly my point ;)

:D
My brain is mush: I should go sleep!

@Fabby - Smoker, right?

@ThatGuy yup

Strange issue described in that question ^
never heard

@Fabby hmm arguing on the basis of what you see in your crystal ball is pretty unanswerable, so I'm going to exit this topic and say goodnight from London which is vanishing in freezing fog :/

Big problem is that people need to learn to chill . . . like reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaally chill
4

@Zanna :D :D :D

10:05 PM
@Fabby I was for almost 20 years. Gave up and started vaping 6 months ago. Never looked back. If you ever get the feeling you want to quit, let me know if there's anything I can help with. I did it, it was painful :)

@ThatGuy :) all the best

We should have a few pints together some day!
Good night! Sweet dreams!

Thanks

@Fabby Sounds great :) Night!

@Fabby One day, man, one day.

10:06 PM
@Zanna Night :) double posting @name was redundant.... bad me

10:47 PM
@ByteCommander I think I figured out askubuntu.com/q/857456/231142

good catch.

:)

Fun fact: @jokerdino is #42 in the all-time reputation leagues of Ask Ubuntu
3

Nice!

Congrats for being the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" - at least on Ask Ubuntu! :-)
applauds from rank 44

11:05 PM
@ByteCommander Does my comment to OP here make sense?

Meanwhile, I am #29 in the all time ranking. Broke into top 20 barely
Guys, don't google images for barrely
Trust me, it's not going to be barrels . . .

I never had that intention...
until now

LOL

Didn't you mean top 30 btw?

well, I wanted to find a pun image to go along with my "barely in top 20" statement, but . . .yeah . . . that happened . . .
Well . . . top 30, yeah . .

11:09 PM
"barrely" in DDG images shows mainly pics of boxer shorts.

guys . . . in boxer shorts . . .
actually, on second thought . . . that's not too bad . . . nice abs actually

hmm... apparently the guys to shorts ratio is much higher on google images than on DDG images.

Still, it was surprising

On DDG most of the shorts are actually empty.
So one more argument in favour of DDG: better a pair of shorts without a guy than a guy without a pair of shorts...

That's arguable though and depends on person's sexuality ^
Personally I'd prefer jeans rathern than shorts . . .
Anybody has a fun lecture/talk to watch on youtube ? Maybe something from DefCon or Blackhat ?

11:14 PM
You know that TED talk about procrastination?

Yes, watched it twice already

(instant gratification monkey, panic monster, etc)
:D
That guy described my life in a few minutes.

By the way , I am not procrastinating. I am relaxing with a book, vim, and lecture in background. In other words, i am doing my homework

@Serg If you seen it twice, then you're not procrastinating about it. ;)

11:16 PM
@Videonauth seen that one twice as well :)

11:49 PM
@ByteCommander heh that's awesome
