Greetings!

herp derp

oh hey you're still here :)

Derp herp
@Videonauth I was watching about USB technology but that looks quite interesting XD

It is im watching it right now

12:10 AM
>>> "herpderp"*2048

herpderpherpderpherpderp...

o/ @badp

How to make a nyan cat in python ?
>>> while True:
...    print "nyan"

Now golf that down... doesn't really work in Python, but Ruby: while true{puts"nyan"}

heh

12:16 AM
\o

user136984
Goodnight! :)

@ArtOfCode >>> while (1): print "nyan"

Aye, could use 1 in Ruby too

Sometimes I forget these simple things which save up so much of code space

man, if I update my C code, compile and there isn't at least one SegFault when I test, probably means I didn't save it
time to hunt down what is wrong with it

12:31 AM
yay, bugs
Smoke

oooh, I see it now
copying 64 bytes in a 33 bytes array :D

it got a lot colder outside

12:52 AM
damn, my hashes are not consistent with the examples -.-
$ ./bin/test 'something'
HASH: 8EA6F95DCCDFE9B616C8003E68A8979421F0B303A02A89C8C734653FFF672616
now I'm not sure if it's something with the hashing function or the output

@IanC what're you trying to hash
the string 'something'?
or a file?

the string 'something' @ThomasWard

@IanC any particular hashing algo?

Sha256
apparently the output should be 3fc9b689459d738f8c88a3a48aa9e33542016b7a4052e001aaa536fca74813cb

uhm...
I'm not sure about that
oh wait
actually
it is

12:59 AM
I suppose they do
running printf "something" | sha256sum gives that, and this website too. Not sure if they account the null terminator when digesting the string though

import hashlib
hashobj = hashlib.sha256('something')
print hashobj.hexdigest()
^ Python2.7, output is 3fc9b689459d738f8c88a3a48aa9e33542016b7a4052e001aaa536fca74813cb which matches your supposedly important output
@IanC what is ./bin/test?

well, apparently the function that shows the hash in hexadecimal is behaving fine, so it should be something wrong in the digesting function :/

a test script or a compiled program heh
@IanC possibly.

a compiled program, in C

1:06 AM
All that snow can make it a little hard to drive sometimes… 💥🚙🚌🚓❄️ https://t.co/TMPeQD2lR0

@TheXed ^

@IanC In case you need to see how I stripped out the end of line character...
though Python autostrips so...
shrugs

@ThomasWard cool! I'm using printf on terminal and redirecting it to sha256sum. The output is the same :)
I found something wrong in the digesting function, fixed it, but still not matching

@IanC I can't help with the C part, but eh

I'm a C++ guy, what can I help with?

1:18 AM
@IanC you can feel free to use that little script though if you need it
it's loosely based on a much more powerful file hasher script I have :P

Thanks @ThomasWard! My idea was to implement the hash to practice though, not even sure if I'll need it at all hehe
@NathanOsman I'm trying to write a sha256 hashing library in C, but I just got to the digesting part and my output is not matching :/

@IanC cool. Yeah I cheat - I borrow hashlib here, but it's a nice way to confirm things :)

damn, I just realized something that might be wrong

@IanC YOU BORKED IT DIDN'T YOU

I have an array with the 8 parts of the hash I need to append. Like Current_Hash[8], and I was doing a memcpy, without accounting the memory layout is little endian, the hash is supposed to be big endian
but still not matching hahaha

1:23 AM
lol

1:34 AM
Yes, if you're using an amd64 CPU, integers will be little-endian.

@NathanOsman I'm trying to track down the error, mind if I show you how I implemented the following logical functions to see if you spot a mistake?
damn
I think I just noticed it
I misread the SHR and thought it was a Left Rotate
it was a right shift
let me see if that solves the issue

So are you the person to justify what content is on this site, or are you just biased towards someone whom asks a perfectly formidable and worthy questions related to other content on this site? It seems like you are scrutinising me for asking a question like this, in which others have freely answered without any hesitation. — PiGuy 1 min ago
"Perfectly formidable and worthy questions" :D

1:54 AM
Eh it can be said that it sort of belongs here under development and 3rd party software categories

sounds like you should open a meta post
and stop baiting users with comments that will get negative replies, @muru
i won't ask again.

@Serg why? It's about whatever makefile-like thing the user wrote for their code. Why should that be on-topic?
If it were about using the Geany interface, installing it or stuff for it, sure, but debugging their makefile is not our thing
@ThomasWard :shrug: Sure.

@muru those comments weren't constructive either way, so they're pruned, but in either case, it may have been better to just flag it for attention instead of going and trying to continue the discussion with your point. In either case, there's merits to both sides.
@muru closed now, but with a much more useful explanation to the user.
lurks again

man, I'll leave this debugging for tomorrow, I need to completely review the digest function

@ThomasWard now that's something I do based on context: friendly reply: better explanation; whiner: bait.
I suppose that breaks the "Be Nice" policy.

2:04 AM
the baiting part, yes.

sup?

@ThomasWard ^the original spelling was better. :P

@Fabby hello.

@TheXed the Darkness.

@ThomasWard cool, kind of cloudy here...

2:10 AM
@ThomasWard maybe that post could be helped with a migration

I wish you guys spoke Spanish and that I was able to share this video

No hablo espanol mi amigo

it's pretty funny for a low-budget late-90s-early-00s show

@muru Maybe. SO doesn't show up in my list on mobile right now
so it won't let me close it like that right here. Or rather, it didn't.

why are some people unable to type coherently?
spaces are a real issue on Main

2:19 AM
@Zacharee1 most people can't type coherently

@edwinksl its definatly tru e
poeple are jut s terrile at typing soeitmes
I tried to type "sometimes" as quickly as a could, hoping for a mistake to appear, but it took four tries

ur english are definately gud, literally outta dis world

you still have to speak proper grammar, just type really quickly and hope for a mistake
srsly?
no typos there?

autocomplete has gone too far

@Zacharee1 If we are talking about proper grammar, then you have failed grammar tests in the past six messages you wrote.

2:22 AM
I was going to teach myself python tonight but I am finding out that I just don't have the energy

On my frozen butt @NathanOsman so cold outside

Not as cold as it is going to be here on Thursday:

lol
programming fail?

2:55 AM
Something fail.
Either that or we're really going to get it Thursday.
(I better buy a couple extra sweaters.)

@Serg looks like you'll be getting some snow too.

Oh yes.

Stay warm.

We had snow this morning.
Not much though.

2:58 AM
Good thing i start work at 6 tomorrow. No need to fight traffic in the morning

@Seth It fell pretty good in the early afternoon here. I walked over to the mall and it was causing a fair deal of traffic mayhem.

3:23 AM
So damn cold

3:43 AM
@Serg looks like 4+ more inches of snow for us this weekend

3:54 AM
@TheXed uh . . .yay ?

no yay :-P

We are about to have snow too tomorrow and 10 F

4:29 AM
Snow tomorrow for us it seems.
Shall I rename this "Ask Ubuntu Snow Room"?

I've got an MP4 video in Chrome's cache and it's stuck. No amount of F5 and Shift+F5 is reloading it.

6:41 AM
@ByteCommander Why was that fact funny?

7:11 AM
Fun not funny

Wow. The only way to make Chrome reload the file was to close the tab and purge the browser cache for that time period.
It wouldn't even work if I left the tab with the video in it open.

8:20 AM
Do I need to reload PowerDNS after editing the config file?
I whitelisted an IP address, but it's still not allowed. The firewall is not interfering.

9:00 AM
So this is in the reopen queue http://askubuntu.com/questions/2724/best-way-to-clone-an-installation-copying-to-identical-hardware (should it be reopened? Are the answers in need of updating?
I wonder if the many questions we have (that I struggle to find) about making an iso of the current installation could be duped to this one? Could we edit it to make that work? Am I on the wrong track entirely with this idea?

@Zanna It's definitely a good question, with good answers. The accepted answer could use expanding though.
Actually, to be honest... A few of the answers could use some expansion. They allude to the use of other software like remastersys and partimage, but don't really explain how to use them.

@ThatGuy this is a very old question...
I think our standards have gone up :)

@Zanna True. Perhaps it's time to ask it again, and contribute more up to date and comprehensive answers? Could we even Wiki it?

oh no, I don't think it should be replaced, we should improve it if needed
we can always edit...

Oh, I see. I missed that it was already a Wiki entry. Gotcha
I love this comment "My Mum runs 'Mumbuntu'"

9:16 AM
even if it's not a wiki, everything can be edited hehe... ;)
respectfully of course...
I thought Mumbuntu could be a real thing... I really need to install Ubuntu for my mum when I go home

Shall we respin our own distro specifically for Mums? Based on Ubuntu Core or something. LOL

smh

Mums for the win! "Son, how do I download Google?"

Anyways I would like to hear more opinions on what to do with the system-clone post, especially from folks with more experience & time on the site than me ^^^^^^^^

@Zanna that question makes me sad, since there USED to be a great tool for this

9:28 AM
@ThatGuy wget http://www.google.com
@Zanna Personally, I'm not too bothered either way. Closed or open the question is still there, as are the answers. Clonezilla is still the best way AFAIK, but the answer is crap. If I were you, I'd just hit skip and move on to something else.

@terdon Haha! I know. Could always use curl as well. :)

10:04 AM
@terdon yeah I'm not feeling too bothered myself whether the question should be closed or open, really I am thinking about the many posts we get asking for a way to "make an iso of my current installation" (with many different wordings) - it seems to me like there are a lot of these posts and they are not finding a good answer... I don't know whether we should be pointing/duping them to this one...

Yes, fair enough. I guess the ideal solution would be to write a nice, updated clean how to and merge it with that one.

"I have 6 identical Acer Aspire Revo R3610 machines" <--- this kind of thing is not what we want in a canonical post I think...
and surely we can just make that crap answer good? It is a CW!

10:30 AM
Go for it!

hmm so you think those posts asking to make an iso of existing installation belong with this one? Because I don't feel I understand this topic well enough to make a conclusion about that, which is why I am asking for input. I've never used Clonezilla or anything like that... so if this is >> /home/zanna/TODO then... I have a lot of work to do on it...
hmm OK... got it. If you want something to get done.... Created task 15.

task li

haha yeah that's about as far as I get

@Zanna :P

10:52 AM
haha I am not sure if I should feel chastised but I don't wanna go around making unilateral decisions when I know nada... thanks for the input!

@Zanna Chastised? Most certainly not! Not by me, anyway.

@terdon thanks, I won't then :)

11:52 AM
Anyone heard of the leap second issue?
Red Hat has posted an excellent article on their site.
@terdon you need a -r on it (download recursive).

Q: SELinux untrusted_app to system_app

BennyI'm looking for simple answer please, How can i add my app to the sepolicy to be completely system_app? Using sepolicy-inject?

@Benny Why ask for Android help from an Ubuntu site?

because u are friends :)

i question the sanity of posting an Android question to an Ubuntu site - a lot of us won't be able to help most likely

2:56 PM
@ByteCommander Cool beans!
I remember being Top 20 at some point of time. Hmm

I've successfully converted my immediate family to Android
And I still don't see a convenience advantage with USB-C

@Zacharee1 it goes i both ways
eventually it means a properly universal charger that will work on anything
also, I donno about phones but USB passthrough on laptops seem interesting
if you could attach a power input and a USB OTG device at the same time...

3:15 PM
@Zanna congrats on 20k!

@JourneymanGeek I never had an issue with micro

Congrats for being the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" - at least on Ask Ubuntu! :-)

@Zacharee1 where is your 20k at, you pleb

@edwinksl I'm blaming you for not upvoting all my posts.

Once again I got a really thankful comment praising my geniality, but that guy still didn't manage to find the accept button... :-P
Thank you so much for such an amazing piece of answer . You rock , dude . God bless you ! You deserve an upvote . — codedbrain 11 hours ago

I really need to switch a spare box to kubuntu for a bit.

And the upvote he mentioned wasn't by him anyway, because he has less than the required 15 points.

3:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek you are finally ready to ditch windows? :p

@ByteCommander tell you what, have another upvote to compensate

@edwinksl right now I have a windows and a haiku box on my desk
and I'm a platform agnostic ;p

unacceptable!

also pretty close to 100K and after that reputation is literally a number
had a pretty good week ;p

still a 2.6k noob here :)

3:27 PM
might try a harry and go after bounties

please get your close vote powersss

but that means an accessible ubuntu box with a gui if I don't want to halfass it

get a vm and be done with it already :p

lol
oddly, I don't like working with VMs and guis ._.

hi

4:10 PM
Heh, Zanna reaches 20k before Zach reaches 12k.
Hmm, must not joke because Zanna reaches 30k before Dino reaches 28k.

:)
yeah she is really skyrocketing

We all thought she was pulling a Videonauth..

Not quite as quick as A.B. yet, is she?

Well she did , and even better as he self did :)

But that guy also hasn't been seen here any more for a while.

4:18 PM
@ByteCommander Perhaps not but then we have some things..

Let's just hope we're not going to have a spring cleaning again.

@ByteCommander hmm...fiction
@ByteCommander Tell me more ...

@edwinksl Omg!!!!!
I can't even
Thank you for all the votes hahaha
@ByteCommander aww unfortunately I already upvoted that post, so I can't offer any additional consolation

You hit 20k! congrats! @Zanna

@Anwar thanks :D

Oh, wow. 20k in 8 months. More congratulations from me. :)

4:38 PM
@Zanna whohoo! Very well done! And totally deserved, to boot!

@jokerdino heh @Zacharee1 has to go to school, so not fair

So do you, last I checked. Even though your roles are reversed :)

NAA answer to a Minty question askubuntu.com/a/857723/367990
@Zanna opportunity to cast your first (?) delete vote on an answer ^

@jokerdino hmm well that one is making the site a better place and not chasing the green stuff <3
@terdon hey thanks! I'm not sure about that, you fixed about half my answers haha :D

Pffft. Nowhere near that and, anyway, that's how it works.

4:42 PM
@ByteCommander oh it was the third one too, boom! :D

:)
Feels good, right?

@terdon hmm you're a generous editor and I try to emulate that :)
@ByteCommander a little too good maybe hahaha

just remember the "great powers, great responsibilities"

Got first accept on elementary SE answer :P

@ByteCommander WHAT? What do you mean responsibilities? It's just a diamond, they said. Prettify your username, they said.

4:46 PM
Listening to "Fiddler's Green - Johnny" at the moment. Cool song. Unfortunately it's so new that there's only a demo video on YouTube yet.
Their new Album "Devil's Dozen" came out in October this year.
Maybe I'll buy the CD...

Hi :) Good evening :)

@Anwar congrats :)

thanks @Zanna

5:08 PM
anyone uses rooted android here? can you check if sh is symlinked to mksh?

@Anwar it's bash on my termux

Thanks.

Nope I lied! It's dash! @Anwar
Misremembered, just checked it

OK.

5:37 PM
@Zanna ugh, school. Finally managed to do some CVs though
How do you track a symlink?

ls -la
I was commenting on SO with beginning with +1. They didn't allow. So moved it to the end of the sentence :P
yeah!! Solved my own question on Android.SE! \o/

5:59 PM
hi
@Fabby hello.

@Zacharee1 haven't done mine today yet
@Zacharee1 do you mean readlink?
readlink -e $(which sh)
@Anwar hahaha TIL!
@Anwar congrats again

Ugh, I can't reach my tea..

disastrous

Good meowning

I had to get off the couch (yes I have a couch at work) to get my tea...

@Serg SFW?

@TheXed yes, python tutorial playlist

@Serg oh awesome...

It goes over basics and then like 4 - 5 projects

@Serg I got through the first chapter of variables...but I realized that I was very tired and wasn't going to make it through another... (learning python the hardway)
but this might be good to reinforce concepts

6:17 PM
Oh, Learn Python the Hard Way is alright, too. Actually, that guy, Zed Shaw, he writes pretty good books. They start out kind of slow but in the end they have some projects

I figure for the price (free) that it will be a good start...

yep. Get it while you can. Zed's C book was free, but he made it non-free this summer, unfortunately

Zed shaw has a C book too?
I started reading his ruby book. but didn't finish.

Well the man deserves to be paid too...

@Anwar he does ! Learn C the Hard Way . . . .hehe, the usual title

6:23 PM
@Serg what do you use to write your indicators?

@TheXed language-wise ? I use python. Text editor - wise ? VIM

Yes language...
by the way Atom is a really nice text editor...
and cross platform...

I tried compiling C version of app-indicator example once, but it was a bit of a hustle, so I decided to stick with python. It's far less troublesome

@Serg I see

6:55 PM
o.O
How did I manage to produce this error response?
F5-ing that page brought up a cute cat pic
user image

Hehe, yeah, i've seen that one once.

haha yeah I love that page
