7:00 PM
a bit disappointed I didn't make it out on the surf

@IanC welcome back. About your question: i haven't played with buffers that much so probably won't be much helpful there

ocean was a bit storm, but I got so close before giving up :/
@Serg I think I found the answer to my own question, the . command repeats the last command and increases the register if one is used apparently. So "1p + u + . will actually repeat the p command with "2 as a register
@Fabby removed the message before anyone could make a double meaning joke? haha
@Serg but reading the help pages, I actually found the :display command, which looks very useful, maybe more then finding the correct buffer by trial and error

It doesn't translate well into English...

damn drug addicts. i found some sort of cup with what looks like toothpaste tube in bathroom but probably it's some sort of drug thing

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

7:12 PM
greetings
@Fabby hi :)

Anwar, are you doing this on purpose???
Read the starred comments! :P

yes :P

@anwar What is the Unix command that makes an otherwise off-line mail server forward all mails from a store-and-forward mail server???

I found the answer of it askubuntu.com/q/798899/61218
@Fabby I am not knowledgeable on that topic. I think @Rinzwind can answer it.

@Anwar the answer is: finger

7:15 PM
come on @Fabby, asking people not to ping you to say Hi or Thanks is like asking people to ping you to say Hi or Thanks!
2

exactly ^

@IanC unix command, mail server, etc...

@Fabby I never set up a mail server, not sure how to do it :/

judging from the name on the package and THC, it is some kind of marijuana thing. it had the dispensary name on it
@IanC he means finger command

oooh
hahaha

7:18 PM
in other words, it is Fabby's way of giving finger to people. The sysadmin way

@Fabby hello.

I don't believe anyone could have flagged that as offensive!
It's just too cute!

I think Ubuntu has a lightweight version of finger, it's called pinky?
I didn't find the little kid offensive

That 'little kid' was wearing a Feyenoord shirt though.

n Unix, what is the finger command? In Unix, finger is a program you can use to find information about computer users. It usually lists the login name, the full name, and possibly other details about the user you are fingering
oh boy . . . . that's totally not going to raise wrong associations

7:22 PM
lol

I wasn't offended either, but I have a notoriously low filter. I'm gonna reverse that suspension this time, but take it as a warning that you need to be mindful of how what you say may be construed by others, @Fabby.

Just a little request: if you're posting something people might not want to open at work, at the very least put a warning on it.

This chatroom is far more SFW than others on SE network

I seem to have stumbled upon some drama

@Zacharee1 what about Jill? Are you being sexist?

7:28 PM
man, I just took a shower, laying in bed and a friend calls me to go surfing, and I'm considering giving it another try -.-

What'd Fabby do now?
@TheXed do you not know the joke?

@IanC I use to have a surboard modem...that is the closest I have ever been to surfing..

@Zacharee1 i shall flag thee as being offensive to Titanic and Apple fans

@Zacharee1 nope but I have to go fix a copier...
got to run.

@ArtOfCode I'm just going to put IanC on my ignore list... He's been pinging me too often after a bad day at work.
My apologies... Never been banned from chat before (except once because I asked a mod to see what it did to the UI)

7:32 PM
@Fabby That's not what your history says ;) No worries, everyone has moments

:O ???

Wat

I got banned for posting the Feyenoord kid...

Idk what that is

Image google "Feyenoord kind vinger"

7:33 PM
Mikey Wilson?

yup

I don't see how that's nsfw

I got unbanned like 2 minutes later...
Now I'm just wondering when else I was banned from chat before...
I remember I once asked a mod to be banned...
Don't remember being actually banned before..

Neither do I, but apparently we've devolved where everything offends us in the society.
Neither do I, but apparently we've devolved where everything offends us in the society. @Zacharee1

But then, maybe my memory is fading...
@Serg Starred!

7:41 PM
so . . .still deciding . . . go to class or skip it do homework for different one . . .

user136984
@Fabby: Well, if Big Momma and Monty Python offend people, anything does.

Next time I'll use the Churchill two-finger salute to make my point.
(No one gets that reference any more anyway except old farts like me who cannot be offended any more... >:-) )

oh nice fabby, welcome to the club of being banned from chat

triggered

:D
@ArtOfCode What's your decade?

7:46 PM
of what, birth?

age...
@edwinksl you been banned before?
For what?

yes

for ?

for a presumably offensive statement

I've been banned mostly out of my own request, and once out of terdon's "fatherly" impatience

7:49 PM
political?

user136984
I still don't understand how I got banned for posting a picture of a fat fully clothed person on a beach making a funny face from a comedy film. There was seriously nothing wrong with the image and I had posted it before and all was fine. In my opinion, I think that there should definitely be some set rules for content, and you shouldn't be able to just get banned for something which really is not ban worthy in any way.

but there are plenty of people in SE chats who choose to be offended, so there is that

@ParanoidPanda was that person missing 75 % of their clothes ?

welcome to chat, where anything and everything you say can be judged by any 10k user from across the network
@Fabby I'm 18

@ParanoidPanda Hey, you posted a disturbing image.

7:50 PM
I've never been banned
2

@ArtOfCode :D Then you will not be triggered by Churchill's 2-fingered salute...

I'm not triggered by anything

that's good

5 mins ago, by ArtOfCode

user136984
By the current logic 5 people offended by puppies could stop all puppy postings here.

7:51 PM
;)
@ParanoidPanda LOL

@edwinksl people like blue color...it's science :P

@ParanoidPanda 6, but yes

user136984
By the current logic 5 people offended by puppies could stop all puppy postings here.

@ParanoidPanda Hey, you once pissed me off so much that I left chat because you kept on posting pictures of puppies!

but also we'd find 'em pretty quick and hit them with hammers

7:52 PM
I want an update on the logic.

user136984
@Serg: No, they were 100% fully dressed.

@ParanoidPanda depends how you define fully

@jokerdino hi! You're supposed to be in bed now!

@Anwar yes and you too

@ParanoidPanda Open a private chat, invide @Serg and post that pic again... Now I'm Really curious...

7:53 PM
@ArtOfCode This . . . is one of the things I don't particularly like. Same as what YouTube implemented - the "viewer police" where immature kidos can flag just about any video they don't like or ( 99% of the time ) disagree with. Sure 10k is sort of an ok criteria, but . . . somehow I don't see that as fully showing that they have discretion to flag

The flag woke me up.

@jokerdino :D Sorry! :(

lol! Was it in your dream?

Sure, the original idea is great, but . . . . problem isn't with flagging , problem is with people not using their brains to flag

@Serg Neither do I, and I think chat moderation is completely screwed. But it's what we have, so it's what we gotta work with.

7:54 PM
@ParanoidPanda invite me too if you are opening a private chat

user136984
@jokerdino: There was seriously nothing disturbing about the image in question. If you find silly faces from comedy films 'disturbing' and you want to ban them... Well...

@ParanoidPanda I don't think I can sleep well now..

Well, 1 person flagged it and 5 agreed it was offensive...

@jokerdino i have you beat - that's been me for an eternity, not sleeping well

The story behind the picture is interesting.

7:55 PM
See, your image has a long list of casualties.

Hey Thomas, can you see how many times I was banned from chat?

@Fabby Fifty billion.

@Fabby Any mod can.

I only remember today and once I asked Oli to be banned to see what the UI would do...

But yes, fifty billion.

7:56 PM
@Fabby what did you post actually? i would like to take a look

@edwinksl the little kid giving finger

image google "Kind vinger Feyenoord"

Not everyone is a fan of Feyenoord.

What the heck is Feyenoord in the first place ?

My dad played in premier league: I don't like football at all....

7:58 PM
Are they far right nazis ?

@Serg Rotterdam Football Club
@Serg Nope
Just a football club in the Netherlands...

sniff Rinzy is Ajax fan I believe.

Football Club ? Really ? Well, not everybody is a fan of AC Milan or NY Giants . . . so what ?

Yup

luis suarez ftw

7:59 PM
honestly I don't care about sports

same here ^

Me neither: panem et circenses...

@Serg that's hurtful

city fan SMH

:|

8:01 PM
aguero though
that tackle

yeah, not cool.

@jokerdino why ? My indifference to bunch of guys chasing a ball on field shouldn't affect your or anybody else's emotions

got to go. good night people

lol, I guess whatever I am saying is going over the head.

See ya, Anwar ! Sleep well

8:02 PM
@Serg There is no such thing as sleeping well.

Goodnight @Anwar :)

Such stories of good sleep are myths and legends.

@ThomasWard ^

@Serg That's a nice hat.

way better than my fedora

user136984
8:03 PM
It should be noted that this image was used on billboards to advertise the film's release:

user136984
As far as I understand it's only this room it's been banned from so... That should be fine?

@ParanoidPanda I requested access!
Are you the owner?

@ParanoidPanda the comedy movie snapshot offended someone ? Wow , amazing, just amazing

i am offended by people's stupidity

user136984
8:05 PM
@Fabby: Yes, and can't you view it without requesting access?

@jokerdino not sure about the lights hahaha

user136984
Anyway, I changed the room to public access.

@ParanoidPanda view yes, post: no!

user136984
@ArtOfCode: Please take a look, and tell me if you find it 'disturbing', if you do... Well, I lose all hope in Humanity...

It's not... @ParanoidPanda

8:07 PM
There is no fun if I have to tag everything I say as [humour] or [sarcasm].

@ParanoidPanda I saw it quite a while ago on your history :)
'sides, I still don't get offended/disturbed by anything

@Zanna shiny disco hat

@jokerdino disco you say? leshrac?

That's a radioactive goat.

user136984
@ArtOfCode Great! I love the idea of having a humorous criminal record! ;D

8:08 PM
When's the elim for majors?

2 days i think, let me check

user136984
I just really think that 6 people shouldn't be able to make law just like that.

So do I, but... it's what we have, and it's not about to get changed.

Poor timezones for me to watch most of the matches.. :/

@ArtOfCode At your age? Kudos!

user136984
8:09 PM
And if you can just do it as you go along, then it's not fair in a lot of cases to actually ban people because you are making the rules up as you go along.

You can always appeal it to a mod if you think it was really unjustified.

@jokerdino it reminds me of a night carnival that London school of samba did... the bateria (band) all put lights on their hats and drums... it looked amazing! But it was on new year's eve, tooo cold for a procession

@Fabby the 'net has desensitised me

^ truth

@Zanna sounds fun. Had loads of fun?
Hmm, I am repeating words. Must be time for bed.

8:10 PM
there are some pretty awful insults out there...

what if there is another flag

user136984
@ArtOfCode: I think they should be like close votes, in some cases they apply, in others they don't. If a question is closed wrongly then it gets reopened and there are even rules listed which define what should be closed and remain closed and what should remain open or be reopened if it was closed. The current system really is terrible.

user136984
It's like some sort of democratic dictatorship.

I've just had most seen used already before... (I'm a dinosaur)

@ParanoidPanda technically, there are rules about what should/shouldn't be flagged, and suspensions can be reversed... it's all just a lot more of a mess than the sites are

8:11 PM
@ParanoidPanda great idea!
But there are already counter-votes...
So if enough people vote for, well...
So wouldn't work any better then the current system.

@jokerdino I sent the invoices and watched the video... didn't go to it! I think one would have needed to get very drunk to walk around for hours in January in the middle of the night. I'm way too boring for that

@Zanna Took a screen shot of that statement!

user136984
@ArtOfCode: I think though that like on the main site with flagging, if a user marks too many things as 'offensive' which clearly aren't against the rules that then the same thing that happens to them on the main sites should happen to them here and that they should get a notice asking them to please reread the rules section again.

sigh . . .I'm trying to answer The Clash question . . .

@Zanna Will come back to haunt you in the future! (not really...)

8:13 PM
@ParanoidPanda Moderators can decline custom flags in chat, which causes the flagger to get that kind of message.

Haha I publically admitted to refusing to get drunk... damn...

No such thing exists for offensive flags, though we do have access to a history and can in certain cases see who flagged, so anyone abusing flags can still be banned.

@ParanoidPanda Actually make it like the review queue: you get tested on offensive flags...
(and lose the ability to flag if you get too many wrong!)
:D :D :D

@jokerdino 2x fun is better than 1... but goodnight xxx

Anyway, back to work: need to get that reporting done or the boss'll think I've been twiddling my thumbs all week...

user136984
8:16 PM
@ArtOfCode: Oh dear, that reminds me of a time lots of things were getting flagged in here... Turned out to be my faulty browser doing crazy things! :D

My thoughts are there is enough bad stuff on the net we don't need to add more or propagate it

user136984
Well, it was either that, or the keyboard, but upgrading Ubuntu seemed to do the trick.

@ParanoidPanda hm

besides that, for a lot of potential Ubuntu, users, we are their first interaction with the Ubuntu community at large...

@ParanoidPanda Remember the stalker kid????
used to annoy you all the time?
Created multiple users?

8:18 PM
So we probably shouldn't be posting pictures of babies flipping people the bird...

@TheXed I'm glad someone realizes that.

Did you flag that too?

user136984
@Fabby: Oh yes, that was terrible. And then came back here a few months ago and sent me horrible emails...

@Fabby I am just expresssing my opinion...

Bad day at work, getting pinged all the time...
Being polite about leaving me alone
then posted something more obvious.
(too obvious)
He's on my ignore list now.

8:20 PM
yawns

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TheXed I'd respectively disagree with that. Overall, we may be first interaction with Ubuntu community, but we're not posting anything overly offensive in this room. The flipping off kid is seen all over internet , not censored by google, not censored by facebook, so . . . . is AU elitist of sorts ? or too sensitive ?

user136984
@ArtOfCode: Out of interest, how many times have I been banned? And it's only been chat hasn't it?

@ParanoidPanda sixty billion

@ThomasWard you're missing a few zeroes
@ParanoidPanda 1 in chat

8:22 PM
@ArtOfCode you're right. quadrillion's the correct value :P

Sextillion?
^---- real word! (before someone takes offense again)

user136984
@ArtOfCode: Really? Only 1? I'm certain I remember more than that... Especially when I had that inappropriate conversation with that chat bot in another room...

@Serg I am not worried about your, or I, or any other frequent visitor, I am worried about the person that comes in here for the very first time and is greated by something like that...

@ParanoidPanda Only one on your chat.SE profile

user136984
@Fabby Flagged. >:P

8:23 PM
there may be some on chat.SO or chat.MSE, but I can't see those

But Serg this might not be offensive to you or your friend you're talking to, but might be offensive to onlookers . Here's the BIG problem with that statement - why do people choose to be offended by something ? If you don't like something - pass through
2

@Serg Starred!!! :)

what about googolplex times, @ParanoidPanda
there is such a number

@ThomasWard googolplex *

Any uWSGI experts around?
Crosses fingers...

8:24 PM
I don't even know what it stands for :)

crossed fingers ? ^ offensive for religious reasons

A googolplex is the number 10googol, or equivalently, 1010100. Written out in ordinary decimal notation, it is 1 followed by 10100 zeroes, that is, a 1 followed by a googol of zeroes. == History == In 1920 Edward Kasner's nine-year-old nephew, Milton Sirotta, coined the term googol, which is 10100, then proposed the further term googolplex to be "one, followed by writing zeroes until you get tired". Kasner decided to adopt a more formal definition "because different people get tired at different times and it would never do to have Carnera be a better mathematician than Dr. Einstein, simply because...

@Serg wait, what?
Whose religion is offended by that?

@NathanOsman Nathan, you're in a class of your own!

user136984
@NathanOsman: Mine! >:P

8:25 PM
When you hit a problem, no one here can help!

@NathanOsman his own religion

@ParanoidPanda Gasp!
I didn't mean to...
Oh, I keep forgetting. I'm Canadian. *clears throat* ahem... sorry.

@NathanOsman My point is that anything nowadays can be made offensive if taken too out of context and too into other context . . . I don't know what religion could be that, but that could be a totally realistic situation of someone saying "hey, separate chat and religion"

@Serg oh, I agree.
I even have a meme for that.

@ThomasWard I don't really have religion by the way. I'm sort of buddhist in disguise who worships cthulhu and coffee

8:27 PM

triggered

@Serg lol

Lol.

@NathanOsman does that guy code in Lithp ?

@NathanOsman you spelled thith wrong

8:28 PM
Also, offensive for disability reasons

yeah I think in general people don't choose to be "offended". Usually it happens because you've been hurt before and so you have a sore point... the choosing one is the one choosing to ignore other folks being upset. I think that is a poor choice.

wait . . .is Lisp a disability or condition ?

it's a programming language

@Serg it's an evil coding language.

a lisp is a speech impediment

8:29 PM
@ArtOfCode LOL

user136984
@NathanOsman Blaspheme! You will burn in Hell for all eternity for insulting the Google!

user136984
Guards! Take him away!

takes him away

takes @ParanoidPanda to the dungeons of chat instead

user136984
:D

8:31 PM
@Zanna Have you ever read a book viktor frankl's "Man's search for meaning" ? Highly recommend. Sure, people have sore points, sure people can be hurt, but to some extend we're in control of our emotions and outlook on life

locks @ParanoidPanda in the room with the spammers

user136984

@ArtOfCode OK, but is that speech impediment considered a disability ?

user136984
Spam spam spam. :P

Like can someone have license plates with "disabled" sign because they have lisp ?

8:32 PM
@Serg shrug ask the internet
@Serg a lisp, and no, because it doesn't affect your mobility.

@ParanoidPanda spam song

if it's spam you're talking about, I am king of the spams

Oh, look 1:33 pm . . .
Still not sure how much damn i'm supposed to give . . .
I need to write a python function to calculate the amount of damns to give per day
OK, there, i feel better now

def damns_given
    nil
end
@Serg

Ruby , but still same idea.

8:36 PM
def damns_given():
    return None
I prefer Ruby

I've been writing more in python, so for now it's my fav language
Ruby is pretty nice,too, I just need to dedicate more time to it

Python has way more good libraries available
I was going to write a Ruby chat framework the other day, but I couldn't find a decent websocket library so I gave up

@ArtOfCode heh

@ArtOfCode Did you see my earlier message about my Go chat package?

@Serg haha as I see it the white man can search for meaning all he likes, meanwhile the rest of us are pissed off and not getting over it tyvm

8:40 PM
OK, I'm gonna go smoke, and then try to decide should I stay or should I go to class . . . See, I'm an indecisive bastard . . . Even if I'm failing a class, I cannot decide if I should completely give up or still attend

@NathanOsman I did not

@ArtOfCode :D :D :D Low score! ;)

@Fabby low score of what?

"Offensive answer detected"... Made me smile!

8:42 PM
@NathanOsman you should totally swap the hyphen for another O

It's still in its early stages.
Lol.

go-sechat becomes goosechat
I'd use that framework, if I knew Go

@Zanna People don't realize that on the grand scheme of things, white or black, asian or arabic - it doesn't matter. We're all same color when we die - rotten.

@Serg Actually, did you know there is no genotype for something we call race?

@Fabby yep

I'd love to post Lady Gaga's Applause . . . but maybe next time

Anybody knows how to monitor a directory for incoming files and directories and automatically move them to a subdirectory?
I posted an answer here which only covers files though.
My other approach would be something like
inotifywait -q -m -e create -e moved_to ~/Desktop/ --format "mv -- %w%f /home/bytecommander/Desktop/new" | while read mv_cmd ; do $mv_cmd ; done
However, you can no longer copy whole directories into the watched directory with this running, because it will move the target directory away before copying of all files finished.

@Serg I don't know what death has to do with it, but you don't have to tell me that race is not a physical essence or a scientific fact - I know as well as you do that race is a "social construct"

So the copying will randomly (or surely for big enough directories) fail.

But @Serg you can't tell me it doesn't matter

8:51 PM
Originally a Mint question, but applicable to a number of distros: askubuntu.com/review/reopen

Insofar as "race" is readable, in the country where I live and the country where you live and around the world @Serg race has currency

The only kind of race that matters to a programmer are race conditions. Those are usually a bad thing though and an example for them is just described a few lines above with the inotifywait/cp thing.
2

Starred!
(though I don't have an answer to your question)

It affects how you get treated by lots of people and social structures @Serg

@Zanna that's part of the problem : it matters far too much in the world we live in. You said " white man can search for meaning all he likes, meanwhile the rest of us are pissed off and not getting over it " . Search for meaning in human existence isn't a white man thing or black man thing of whatever man thing.

8:55 PM
no white, no black... but 50 shades of grey...

The people I see saying race doesn't matter, we're all the same, we're all just people, etc, pretty much are always white folks. "Race" is something we can choose to ignore since it doesn't make any trouble for us

@ByteCommander Hey, you won't have a race condition if you use a script that traverses the directory and moves the files recursively...

@Serg well I'm not a man at all, that's what I was actually quipping about...

(and only moves the directory if it's empty)
:)-)

@Zanna the only treatment people should worry about is how we treat each other, neighbors, our kids, friends. Social institutions won't help me write matlab code for final project and neither it will listen to me at 3 am when I'm brokenhearted

8:57 PM
@ByteCommander 50 shades of grey

Anyway I just got off the tube especially to say my piece. Getting back on now since I see it's not helping anyone. Later all. Peace.

@Zanna I don't care whether you are a man, a woman, something in-between, black, white, red, yellow, a green martian or a blue smurf: if you get the job done, you're hired!
2

so, should i actually go to class or get another coffee ?

:P :)

@Fabby starred because TRUTH

8:59 PM
@Serg definitely coffee

@Serg Go to class or I'll have you banned!

@Fabby actually i could use that haha
no

:D
