1:01 PM
@Zacharee1 yeah sounds like it.

1:34 PM
@ThomasWard but I did try whitelisting the domains
and nothing still
so idk

@Zacharee1 disable/remove AdAway

ugh

it's entirely possible that it's 'whitelist' is not what you think it is, and that it's going to separate DNS or such and causing filtering/resolution problems

my phone takes forever to reboot

there's a lot of applications that 'seem' to be beneficial but actually break things

1:36 PM
@AndroidDev wth would you want a gui for apache?

because people hate working with Apache configs by hand
it's the same argument for 'webmin' which in and of itself is a security hazard

what is todays theme of discussion?

@ThomasWard well it worked before I updated to the 9/19 build of CM

@TheXed the existential infinitude of life and its perils

well, it is AdAway :(

1:39 PM
@Zacharee1 AdAway + CM = death probably, with that build
I would report it as "Doesn't work with CM"
though it's more likely that you had to mess with some stuff to make it work

@ThomasWard do you have any Android adblock suggestions?
I just had to use the disable button in AdAway

@Zacharee1 primary phone/device is Apple, sorry. The other problem is that those apps don't integrate with other browsers like Chrome usually
so i don't have any (I have massive snort filtering in place for ad blocking on a special wifi my android devices connect to, and only on that wifi segment)

because AdAway works really well, maybe too well
hmm
ABP seems to have something
"only works via WiFi"

good morning (or evening or afternoon)

hey, the whitelist works now

1:48 PM
I wish we had something like AdAway for Linux

Android is technically Linux, so technically we do :p

for desktop linux

that exists too actually
since AdAway is just an app that downloads and merges hosts files, it's pretty easy to replicate
and it's been replicated launchpad.net/adandcrapblock

wait..
I was talking about the one which can block network access for individual application. does it work in desktop too?

AdAway modifies your hosts file

1:57 PM
I might have mixed two application name. I'll confirm its name
o/ Rinz
Can you have /boot unmounted while you're using Ubuntu?
it seems you can.

Q: Are Ubuntu CDs still available?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceAs we celebrate the 12th birthday of Ubuntu, I look back on the announcement of 4.10 Warty Warthog, and see that back then, in 2004 (woah), the only way to get Ubuntu was by CD, and that you could request one here, but now unfortunately, that specific adress is no longer available, and UbuntuLinu...

@AskUbuntuMeta Already answered. Probably not on topic for Meta though

@ThomasWard and what have you decided?

@TheXed about?

the existential infinitude of life and its perils

@TheXed Because it's infinite there is no decision. You cannot come to a decision about something that is infinite :P

2:35 PM
@ThomasWard but you did make a decision...although incorrect...

@TheXed Unless I'm on the fence and have made several decisions, or no decisions
Or I've determined that all decisions are invalid and have therefore declared myself a hypocrite

First of all life isn't infinate....it would only take one astriod/comet, other large space object to wipe us all out...
Or a nuclear weapon.

@TheXed I didn't say life was infinite. I said the perils are infinite.

"existential infinitude of life and its perils"

of life and its perils
the two combined as one thought.
though i realize retroactively that i could have shortened that to be more concise
oh hey Android Studio finally updated >.>

2:46 PM
I have never been able to get andriod studio to be useful...

3:05 PM
need it for an android programming course I am taking heh

Cool...

1 hour later…
4:37 PM
Who broke the internet this morning?

4:49 PM
@TheXed Sorry, that was me. I searched Google for "Google".

5:19 PM
@TheXed the Darkness covering the other side of the earth right now broke it. And also ^ that

5:36 PM
@terdon recursion is fun :+

next year we get 5 new emoticons from Unicon.
1 is a breastfeedingemoticon :X

what's unicon?

The IT Crowd is AWESOME!

@jokerdino I just see a missing 'r'

5:46 PM
The whole thing is missing!

@jokerdino sorry meant Unicode

looks at keyboard I don't see how that happened.

typing while doing other things :+)
I use 1 hand to type >:)

You've heard of Comic Con... well, this is UniCon.
:D
I guess... it's a conference where industry leaders gather to discuss Unicode?

that 1st command cant have done anything?!

5:55 PM
I'm pretty sure /var/www/html/htaccess.txt isn't a valid user. — Nathan Osman 13 secs ago
@Rinzwind exactly.

hi guys

@NathanOsman look at the image!
it actually says that :X

Oh, I didn't see the image.

see the command above it

O_o
Yeah, there's your problem.

5:57 PM
the directory has no x permission then

Indeed. He is correct - there is a problem. But he is wrong on its cause.

on it
grrr @nathan >:)

@Rinzwind By the way, congratulations to your 2k-th Ask Ubuntu day. :)

:)
@NathanOsman +1 >:)

wow, very ddos, many websites unreachable :/

6:01 PM
thanks @ByteCommander

@edwinksl such ddos, much wow.

@Rinzwind :)
@edwinksl What? Where?
Oh, the Dyn thing?

yeah

What do these morons have to gain by doing all these ddos attacks?

inb4 blame russians

6:04 PM
@Terrance Notoriety.
@edwinksl lol.

@Terrance they dont want you on the internet >:)

Yeah, someone will stake claim to it, then feel all powerful. Maybe they got their feel bads hurt somewhere along the way.
OK, Outook for Mac is horrible! :(

@Rinzwind Don't look at Takkat.

don't think of an elephant...
2

:(

6:10 PM
Hmmm...
This is weird.
DNS has stopped working for me

@jokerdino why sad?

he is a mod.I am a user :-)
I am on AU more voluntarily then him >:)

Oh hmm...

@NathanOsman @edwinksl someone is ddossing netflix

6:19 PM
This DNS thing is affecting my "npm install".
ಠ_ಠ

or better: they are targeting Dyn
and they host twitter spotify and netflix.

Yeah, Twitter wasn't working earlier.
GitHub either.

github surprisingly works for me

It's sporadic.
It works and then it doesn't work.

damn thats a lot of rain ->
dude needed his coffee ^

6:24 PM
Gah.
registry.npmjs.org is inaccessible.
Look, I don't care about who gets affected. Just stop accepting traffic from the subnets dumping the packets.

@Zanna I thought of an elephant.
@Rinzwind it's ridiculous he beats your already impressive record.

Nice! Their status page's DNS is provided by... well, you guessed it... Dyn!
Facepalm.

Good place to check the sites that are down currentlydown.com

@jokerdino I know, it works every time... but elephants are a happy thought

@Terrance Yes, but this is a case of DNS being down.
Which, for the most part, I guess is the same thing :P

6:33 PM
I knew that Dyn was affected this morning.

It has broken my "npm install". So annoying.

Not a lot of down sites listed though.

PayPal, Pinterest, Imgur, Soundcloud - all are down.
Nice.
On the plus side (depending on your perspective), the Pirate Bay is down :D

v(^_^)v

6:35 PM
I was actually able to get on Imgur

It's all sporadic.
With DDoS, some requests still get through.
But the majority don't.

Paypal.com I can't even touch right now.

And once your computer completes a DNS lookup, the results is usually cached.

Yep, imgur is hosed for me. No updates
Awww, webmd is down. No more personal diagnostics today. :(

I could connect to imgur and paypal both in less than 5 sec...

6:38 PM
@ByteCommander It seems to affect North America more than other regions.

Hey!
Neat trick.
I bet I can use my server in France to resolve some of the domains by hand.
I can just add temporary entries in /etc/hosts for now.

You've got a server in France? Nice.
I only have a sucking VPN...

What the heck?

It isn't even a valid domain name!
Those evil hackers :P
O_O
Yikes!

You don't need to "investigate". It's out of your control.
Ha!
I found registry.npmjs.org's IP address finally.
151.101.52.162

Let's DDoS that ^
;-)
(no, we don't do that, of course!)

6:53 PM
would it be totally annoying for me to flag some comments just for being completely pointless?

no
But do it when I am around so I can rake up my tally.
evil grin

I'm back in business.
For now anyway.

@jokerdino done!
hmmm I should have flagged them as "too chatty" but I put "obsolete" instead shrug. Sooo many comment flag reasons

Woot - "npm install" finished.
Manual DNS resolution FTW.

7:15 PM
inb4 PoodleCorp claims responsibility for this attack

weren't those kids on trial

They are.
And I bet the parts of them not in trial are gonna claim this as them.

All of my websites are up :)
Disqus is down though...

Yay for having some servers on dyn ;-;
but yay multiple DNS servers
well newrelic is still up so...
newrelic is up so the internet is fine :D

Q: demand a new theme (and gummy bears)

userDepthStop using this bright theme, please... But I demand that AskUbuntu offers different theming for the sake of everyone. TY So basically we have different preferences and theme is one that can be provided as Light, Dark and Reading enhancement. I repeat Light, Dark and Reading enhancement

I see you guys already know about Dyn DNS, huh ?

@Serg We sure do.
Workarounds are in place for me anyway.

@MuditKapil 0/
@terdon: Sorry, man!
(I should have known better as an ex-30K user! :D )

@AskUbuntuMeta croikey m8
@Serg watwatwat

@Serg stop attacking the internet!

7:55 PM
Lol.

it's userDepth again....

@TheXed sorry, i needed to practice ddosing

@Serg I knew it was the Russians the entire time! you just proved it!

@Serg I bet you even installed Kali, you 1337 Pr0 h4xx0r

@AskUbuntuMeta wut?

7:57 PM
but . . . . I'm Ukrainian

or Ukrainians, wherever you are from...

@Serg didn't you say you don't care about the distinction?

But if you ask the Russians they think the Ukrainians are Russian anyway...

I honestly think UD might be drunk:
@Zacharee1 maybe we should meet in the web. — userDepth 42 secs ago

@Zacharee1 yup. But for the sake of fun, I'm rolling along with TheXed's words

7:58 PM
sigh

@Serg or maybe you think all the Russians really are Ukranian...

what a twist!
