11:23 PM
man, after reading the older messages I feel like I just missed the internet apocalipse

@IanC yeah, you really have

so long story short, anonymous DDoSed the root DNS servers?

@IanC well, so far we don't know who DDoSed, but it sounds like anonymous are doing revenge-DoS for Assange's internet beingcut

had to look up who Assange is :p

@IanC the guy behind WikiLeaks

11:28 PM
someone took control over a bunch of idiots' insecure devices and used them to DDoS Dyn's DNS servers.
I hope ISPs will (for once) do something moral and terminate the accounts of all the people whose devices were involved with the attack.

translation: consumer IoT devices were compromised because consumers don't know how to use their sh*t

by the way, I'm reading your code, think it will be more helpful to Zacharee1 then mine since mine uses liked lists, and it would be more algorithm unrelated code to worry about

They shouldn't be able to connect to the internet.

that's a bit radical @KazWolfe

@IanC well , i'm still gonna be working on it, i need to make it simpler

11:30 PM
they would cut 70% of people out of the internet?
lol

@KazWolfe ain't gonna happen, bro

@IanC No, these idiots should learn to secure their goddamn devices before they're allowed on the internet.

man, I can count on my fingers how many people I know that know how to use the internet securely
and that's coming from a guy that is also not an expert on every matter

Find everyone who made overly excessive calls to Dyn today, and kill their internet.

@KazWolfe people haven't learned to do so even with their normal laptops and desktops. Think they're gonna be doing that with IoTs ? Pfffffff, dream on

11:31 PM
It's arguably easier to secure a webcam than it is a laptop.
Admin Panel > Change Password > Done

then they choose "password123"
:D

that ^

Still better than admin/admin, which is what these scripts are looking for.

plz . . .
google top 10 passwords

just kidding, I understand what you mean @KazWolfe, but let's face it, most people have bad security habits, so cutting them off internet isn't really a plauseable solution
because we would cut TONS of people out of internet, and I bet there are some legal issues with that aswell

11:34 PM
i work in univesity computer labs. Some people have no clue how to print stuff. Some don't have a clue how to open Word document. And you're telling them "secure your devices" . . .

@IanC TOS
The ISPs already can do this because of their TOSes.

@IanC I think that's an excellent solution @KazWolfe

I tried to show my parents couple of times how to do stuff, how to open router control panel and restart it. Couple clicks. Their response ? "That's too advanced for me"
My father can take apart car engine , yet he says couple clicks are too advanced

on that note...
Why the hell do people have their webcams port-forwarded globally?

@Serg tell them to unplug it from electricity and then plug back in
2 "clicks"!

11:35 PM
They can set that up apparently, but not change a password?!

@KazWolfe The tyranny of the default.

They want to watch the baby from work!

@Fabby nonononono.

@Fabby doesn't always work. When our router starts freakin out, I have to reboot it couple times, maybe change ESSID , and only then it works

11:36 PM
Routers don't automatically port-forward what enters the network
Or if it does, something is really wrong with that router.

Yes they do: UPNP

oh.
that's right.
WHY IS THAT A FEATURE?!

:D
And that was designed by M$: it's easy....

why am I not surprised ?

UPNP is a good idea.

11:37 PM
Security is difficult

Not for bloody port forwarding.

Hey Singapore!
Aren't you up really early for a Saturday?

Does anybody have $5m I can have?
I want to set up a competent ISP in my hometown.
And then see exactly how badly old people screw up the internet.

let me check my paypal from the indicator donations . . .
still $0.00

I don't think only old people have bad security habits

11:40 PM
hey, if my competent isp plan takes off, i hope to bring it to more regions. either by myself or by forcing other isps
@IanC no, but they're pretty bad.
my entire town can be summed up as "completely dependent on genius bar and grandchildren"

Starred!

so having a competent isp would be fun
and would generate a lot of research data

I need new decent set of wall papers

and of course have an opt-out in my 80 page terms of service.

maybe it wouldn't be much profitable though :p

11:44 PM
@IanC actually i plan to have an interesting pricing model.

@Serg I'm usually stuck with the ones I choose at the installation

pay my upstream ISP per GB, and charge users per GB.

i need to start going to gym

goddamnit lost my nano-sim card.

my 30$ / month are going nowhere basically

11:45 PM
brb in three hours after i search the floor.

lol
good luck man!
(I mean with finding the nano-sim card)

saved !

about the pricing model, why do you think that would be a better pricing model? To cut costs for those who use internet less? @KazWolfe

I noticed you like steampunk theme a lot, don't you ?

@Fabby I can't imagine that could actually fly...
So is Dyn still dead?
DeadDNS?

Nope.
1 hour ago, by Nathan Osman
Update: Dyn reports 'incident has been resolved' after 3rd denial of service attack reported http://www.breakingnews.com/t/BgI1

nice

11:50 PM
@KazWolfe I already have my own utility for that >:)
4
A: How can I set up a side-scrolling wallpaper?

SergJust like I said in the comments, you would have to cut down the image into even sized or overlapping pieces and create a slideshow for it. I don't know the license of that specific image that you want, so I will leave it up to you to cut it(Hint). However, here is an animated wallpaper generat...

then just pull data from 500PX

I got scared when I came home and my phone had an exclamation mark next to the WiFi icon

Dyn is gonna lose so much business over this.

@KazWolfe you sure? They did a pretty amazing job at fixing it quickly

@Serg I think I'm starting to get the code, you did a bottom up approach though right?

11:51 PM
@IanC yup, exactly. Simply translated the pseudocode from Wikipedia

@Zacharee1 To companies like Amazon, this much downtime means millions lost.

I once read that over 8 second outtage , Amazon lost millions

yeah, but this isn't Dyn's fault

@Serg I think my code uses the up to bottom approach, with recursivity

@Zacharee1 to the investor eyes it is

11:51 PM
this sorta is dyn's fault.

and if they can go down like this, what might happen to weaker DNS services?
that sound better atm

i mean yeah, it wasn't their incompetence that did this, but they should still have a lot more redundancy and prevention against exactly this.

from what I'm hearing about its effects, I'm not sure anything could have stood up to an attack of that magnitude
although I am questioning why people don't just use 8.8.8.8 :p

how many Tbps was this attack, even?
@Zacharee1 Because it wouldn't have fixed anything.

does Google use Dyn too o_O?

11:53 PM
Dyn's nameservers went down with the attack.

@Zacharee1 because they don;t want google to track everything they do?

So it was domains who had their DNS records tied to Dyn that went down.

@Fabby too late for that lol

Other domains were perfectly fine, basically.

@Zacharee1 one word: startpage.com

11:55 PM
@Fabby "enhanced by Google" kk

yeah, with privacy

There's also ixquick

same backend
OK, I've had it:
sleepy time!
shutdown /s /t:1

Sleep well, Mr. Vorlon o/

@Fabby eww windows
