Q: Switching from Ubuntu: What is software support like for other distros?

portOdinI'm about to reformat my laptop and am considering trying a new Linux distro. Ubuntu was my first Linux OS, and I chose it because it seemed to have the most support and documentation for different software. For example, when searching for instructions on installing a framework like Ruby on Rails...

In this life I hate two things - cars and my father's temper. Both are closely related

\o/, just cheated a little to get flask-bootstrap to play nicely with bootswatch

1:07 AM
This is the most active Linux chat I think.. and it is not really super active all the time.

Depends on the people. Alot of folks here are from different time zones

I was on here like everyday for a while.. but I have my namesake too..
i.e. No Time

hehe, Time ? aint nobody got time for that !

Just drop in and say something :) there are usually a few lurkers around

1:17 AM
Hehe, nice tune. I like it. Guess its my name-song now :p

@Mateo easy to lurk on a phone too

That's what i do occasionally
Answering questions on mobile is a whole different story tho. Like when you on mobile and you see a good question that you know you can answer, but you have no access to terminal. >_<

So.. I am glad I get to run linux at work. I have lots of free reign, and am doing a CentOS server.

I already have an Ubuntu desktop running as an SMTP server (local network only) so I could scan from an old copier, using PostFix and munpack (think it's the name.. MIME reader).

@serg you can install a terminal for android :)
I need to figure out how to run a server that can encrypt network traffic, and use and IDS/IPS/

Yeah, but that's not quite the same

You could get a keyboard and do screensharing to a tv?

1:28 AM
TV in the middle of public train ? Naaah, i doubt that's gonna work :)
and that's what i mean, I lurk on the site like 70% of my time, even on trains or during lunch
even in bathroom :)

I don't really know anything about Linux servers..

@Serg hack into the display for next stop, then type in huge pixels
I am not serious if you hadn't figured it out

lol I can imagine other commuters freaking out . OMG he's a hacker , we're gonna diiiiieeee
I know , buddy

Where are you exactly @serg?
Like country

Denver , Colorado

Oh you are in US.

1:31 AM
the US of A

Trains in CO? I don't remember that

Denver has a public lightrail system called RTD

I was in Colorado Springs for like a year
would go up to Denver a bit.. mostly just for some professional games
football and baseball
I also hit the skatepark a couple times

When was that ? I think they started building the lightrail system around 2005 - 2007

I left in 2007
or 2008 I think
That's cool. Public transportation in US usually sucks
We have lightrail here too
Which isn't half bad

1:34 AM
I came to the states in Jan of 2007. Immigrated from Ukraine. Bus system in the US kinda sucks, i can agree on that. But I lightrail is cool, mostly on time. So far only killed 2 people :)

We have people dying all the time .. . .
I used to live in Germany (4 years or so)

Where you're from originally by the way?

US
I just have moved around
I was in the Army

That makes sense. I've got a classmate who was stationed in Italy, and got around with his Spanish skills, cuz those languages are pretty similar. Wish I continued studying Spanish tho. I got much more invested into Chinese

Aber ich habe Deutsch gelernt.

The only Russian I know (I couldn't spell).

Kohk-du-lah
Nor-mal-na

1:38 AM
:) How are you ? - Normally, OK

Yep

Russian is a crazy language. Even for the native speakers

Had a friend from Uzbekistan.

Slavic languages, but I heard that once you get one the others aren't too bad

@Mateo lurkers be lurking
5

Yup, there's a slight difference with Western Slavic languages and Eastern but mostly you can understand like 60 to 70 % without speaking the language completely. My parents used to work in Czech Republic for a while. They picked up the language pretty fast. I did to in my 2 months of visiting them.

1:40 AM
And don't other languages like Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. all use syllable based languages similar to Slavic?

Korean is especially similar, but Chinese and Japanese are more soft in pronounciation

I went to Prague before, it was really nice. Really fun.
All I can remember Japanese is:

o-to-ko-no-koa shin-bun-o yon-de ima-ska

what does that mean ?

@hbdgaf ;)

The boy has the paper I think..
@hbdgaf
(Starcraft reference)

1:43 AM
OK. Japanese is interesting but I never got around to learning it. Besides, no exposure to native speakers, so I wouldn't be able to practice it

You should be able to meet at least some in Colorado, especially in Colorado Springs, because of people moving there with wives/kids from Japan.

Which is interesting, because according to history books Denver has big Japanese community. In reality I only see Koreans and Chinese here. Oh, and vietnamese

@NoTime zerg rush ftw

@hbdgaf unless you were really good at protoss.. or flew your base around as terran
terren? how was that spelled

terran
or teran, don't know which?

1:45 AM
ok well I think my wife is getting annoyed at me talking so much.

Ill talk to you all later
\o

o/
nice meeting you

later

@Fabby Welp, I dunno. I booted my 15.04 again, Jacob's script now works with no errors, but it doesn't seem to set the languages. Soooo . . . .I'm confuz'd :p
Wish I had any idea about python, but that's not my area of expertise

2:05 AM
Why did I do that??? As if I am not busy enough?

Well I guess I am back
What do you need to read in the python script @serg

@NoTime not my script, another persons. We're competing for a bounty :) I'm 100% confident the guy's script works, just not on my machine
6
Q: Assign default keyboard language per-application

GRoNGoRIs it possible to assign default keyboard language for specific applications? I know that there is an option to always start an application with a default keyboard language but this is not what I want. I'm looking for something similar to "fixed workspaces" which you can set using CompizConfig (...

I mean for his python scrip what are you trying to read?
script*

The script should be setting a particular language input for each program

Are you using python 3.x?
3 point something?

2:16 AM
Em . . . I think so . . .3.3 . . . .I'm not sure actually. If i type python --version it says 2.7.9, if i do tab completion for python, i have 3.3 and 3.3m and 2.7 come up

type python3 before you run the script instead of python
or it might by py3 I can't remember..
python 2 uses "python" as a link in bin

nope, doesn't work. I still can change my language sources
Meh, I've no clue about python. I'm only modestly good at shell scripting so far

he's stripping a lot of output, and using lists and lots of parsing sometimes breaks.. i just know because I made a python program that did similar type of thing

What do you think of my shell script ?

You are setting environmental variables and calling to them right?
It's a lot easier to follow logic wise.. but I don't know if I can read either one of them completely 100%

2:23 AM
yup

Just a quick question.. does changing the locale do anything there?
I don't deal with multiple keyboards usually, but remember a similar question with lenses and changing locale for the wikipedia lens

em . . . nope. The idea is to take language sources that user has added and set them for each specific program
so like, english for firefox, russian for terminal, chinese for gedit, and so on
Originally i had only case structure, but i changed it to setting variables and just calling those variables. Easier for user to customize that way

You could probably make an output text, which they could interactively set too using a bash script. (similar to yours)

If you could include tab completion for programs :)
I like prompts :)

Am I the only one annoyed by ads on webpages that prevent you from reading the sites content until after a certain amount of time lapses?

you might be able to do xargs with the program too, so you could run the program in question using your script..

Sorry this isn't really helping but I think its a cool idea

2:27 AM
Hmmm, I could do that. I could add a separate, config script

@daBoss can't you click off of it?

@daBoss they train your patience :)

It wouldn't let me do anything until 20 secs lapsed...

Guys, does anybody knows if there's any volunteering done in IT community ?

Yes. Usually parks, libraries, and senior centers
Public places. Sometimes it's only doing basic teaching, like "What is a mouse?"

2:33 AM
@Serg You can volunteer for me...

Otherwise look at meetups or groups

@Serg that is if you are not a convicted felon...

If you are.. prisons might want help too

@daBoss oh ? What could I do ? I'm not convicted felon, that's for sure

I need two computer labs set up by friday...do you have it in you?

2:35 AM
@daBoss are you in Denver ?

Far from it...
You didn't say it had to be close to home...

facepalm

Is that you in the profile picture @daBoss

I have a lot in me, but not enough cash to travel around

@NoTime no, I am much better looking :-D

2:36 AM
I just thought it looked funny almost Game of Thrones like

It was appropriate to my situation at the time...I had just received a big promotion when I put that picture there.

How many computers? Yes I remember you work at a school and you were an assistant and became head :)

@Serg to bad, I really could have used someone that knows what they are doing.
@NoTime I don't know, I haven't taken the time to count all the computers...500-700...

I don't want to ask what state because even if you are near me I don't have time to help someone in close area

What makes it hard is 4 learning centers stretched all over the place...

2:39 AM
@daBoss are you doing drops as well?
or just setting them up?

@NoTime network drops? One lab yes, the other is going to be a mobile lab so wireless...

Eh so 100 computers on a WAP? That sounds like you might have no bandwidth..
Unless you have a couple I guess
100-200
seems like a lot on that. But idk the equip

I have all sorts of WAP's...
it is actually a mess and needs to be fixed...

Are the computers imaged?

the one lab yes... the mobile I just got the laptops, so no.

2:44 AM
How many need to be imaged then? 250... do you have imaging machines or do you do imaging over network?

30...

Oh 30 is definitely doable.. Where are the 500 coming from?

Oh..I thought you meant total computers through the entire district.
two labs, 30 computers each.

Nah. But do you have any IT guys under you? Like at each location?
30 is a days work. I set up 20 laptops, with cords, cables, etc in about 4 hours by myself. It's not too bad
The imaging would be the long thing

I have 2 guys that work for me, both part time... the guy that helps during the summer his last day was Friday, and the other guy doesn't start till Sept 1.

2:47 AM
For whole district?

Yup

You need at least one more full time

I really need someone full time but the Supt won't spring for it.

turn off his computer
and say its a network issue

lol...

2:48 AM
he will spring for it

Disable his account...

I am almost joking..
Nah just when there is a big issue just don't rush and kill yourself over it

Can't rush to it...lol... I am never in the right building when stuff does happen.

Work at an even pace. He isn't going to fire his one person, and maybe he can see you need another.. That's when you ask for at least 2 part time or 1 full. 2 to cover a fulltime shift
People don't care about IT until they need it.

That is the truth.
The ironic thing is, he was IT before he got his Supt degree...
So he should know...

2:50 AM
You can have something work 99.9999999% of the time, once it goes down, you are an expletive deleted

but whatever...

Old school IT is different
they just put things together to make em work however

Yea....I suppose so...

and people didn't know what the internet was

lol
The way I see it, when shit flies and crap doesn't done, even though I am trying to work as fast as I can, they will see the need...or fire me...
Then i will collect unemployment and make as much as I did at my former job...
doing nothing lol

2:53 AM
Just from the experience I have, they don't care how fast you work, because it is your fault it broke.. not fairly but they don't see it the same because they don't understand it
You just have to find the line where they realize they need you, but don't f up the system

Well , at least you guys have real jobs. I'm just a college student with no experience which means even my college IT team refused to give me a chance

I fell into this.. I was going to be going back for BAS in Management Information Systems
I only have AAS's
Are you still in College @serg

Yup. Been there since 2009. Engineering degree doesn't go too smooth for me

@Serg I would let you intern for me in a heart beat...
Actually that just gave me an idea...there are some community colleges around...
Nothing like free labor lol...

I would say find internship...

You can go to www.governmentjobs.com if you don't mind government work. You can search locally

2:58 AM
If you can get into the government sector do it!

You can usually find work at a county or state.

The work is hard, and sometimes downright awful but the perks are nice.

I did county internship, it was actually super chill.. Boring but easy and chill. Engineering people had all the fun stuff.. Hard but fun

Heh, government job ? For a student with no experience ? That'd be incredibly lucky

Internship first

2:59 AM
@Serg you might be suprised :-D

You just need foot in door for government
Unless you get full time then hooray

Even though I work for a school district I am considered a state employee...

Whats cool is that you can transfer around once you are in

and I get all the perks..

And all the llamas you can milk.

(That's a government perk right?)

3:01 AM
Hm, thanks for the tip guys :) I'm gonna look around

llama milk!

Check out spiceworks too I think they have jobs sometimes

@Serg seriously, call some of your local grade/high schools and see if they need volunteer IT work...

By the way, llama's in chinese are slang for profanity

Forget college IT departments, they are elitist...

3:02 AM
@Seth has a cool joerb right?

@Serg most of your local school districts are fund restricted and would love free/minimum wage IT help.... they call it cheap labor, you call it work experience, everyone benefits...
@NoTime I am not sure what @Seth does...

@NoTime jorrb?

brb guys , need to brush my dog's teeth

@NoTime Not in a good position to watch youtube..

3:04 AM
Ah.. hmm

@daBoss Seth does temp work and other stuff that students do..

And @Seth talks in third person...
@Serg you brush your dogs teeth?

I was thinking just give it a bone

@Serg I consider it a good day when I have time to brush my own teeth...

3:06 AM
I just received my degrees in the mail today almost 3 months after graduation

@daBoss Yes, yes he does.

@NoTime...I have a bachelor degree that belongs to an old room mate of mine...
I don't know what his degree was in...or anything...I have no idea how to get it to him...
but here it sits in an envelope....

My wife has like 12 things behind her where she works
3 degrees and a bunch of other plaques

My wife has one degree and a bunch of teaching endorsements....

I got 2 degrees, 1 diploma and 2 certificates, and they cost me 30k about..

3:11 AM
For the first time since my wife and I have been married, as of July 29th I make more money then her O.o (sudden realization)

6k per piece of paper :)
Tell her you are the sugar daddy now?

@NoTime well it's a complicated thing. Our dog has teeth problems, couple of her teeth already broke or fell out. So we have to brush it. Mostly my father does that, but sometimes when he has poor mood, he makes me brush it.

and she would tell me I owe her for the last previous 9 years...

@Serg small dog?
@daBoss yes sometimes it is better to be quiet than try to win

@Serg your dog has my teeth...I had to get a filling not to long ago because I freaking sneezed and broke a tooth...

3:13 AM
Not that i mind brushing her teeth. I am the first guy to go clean restaurant bathroom after one customer had epic pukage all over the walls and ceiling (no kidding). But when people talk as if army sargeant (which he was), it just turns off all desire to interact. And that's my experience in all 8 years living with them
Yeah, spaniel, small doggy. My teeth are not the best either. Last year spend like 7k on dentist visits

I am up to 900...and I still have to have one pulled (beyond repair)

Well. I am lucky as far as teeth. I have had one cavity in my life and it is from a dentist messing up, and causing it
When they removed my wisdom teeth he cut into one of my other teeth.. it's below gumline and I really don't care

Soviet dentists are the worst. I had teeth drilled with no painkillers in 5th grade. Passed out like twice

Soviets are tough...lol

Metal fillings ? Sure why not. Ignore the gum disease and oxidation years later

3:20 AM
@Serg whatever it takes I guess...

I just was lucky. I didn't have good habits.. I have lots of other problems (bad eye sight, bad joints, etc.) but my teeth always good.

@daBoss well yeah but I call it job half done. Besides , it's a person's health. It should be done right, with quality
@NoTime what's your secret of dental health ?

I did have one problem, when I was 5 or so. Someone hit my face against a metal slide, right on my tooth. My tooth died, but the dentist cemented it in. So I had a gray tooth that was attached to my gum. My mom had to rip it out and some of the gum came off.

@serg health and quality is so over rated :-P

@Serg Genetics.

3:24 AM
-_-".......Where's all the radioactive spiders ? I wanna have super health lile sidey

@Serg yeah Genetics plays a huge part in tooth health...

Ironic. All my family has good teeth. I'm the odd one

@Serg how about your grand parents?

Good enough too
Like I said, I'm the odd one

60% of your dental health care is determined by genetics the rest of determined by how well you take care of them and dumb luck...

3:26 AM
Deaf on left ear, wearing glasses, had to go to chiropractor because of my constant lower back problems

dumb luck (sneezing and breaking a tooth like me)

ouch
That's some sneezing capacity you have :)

The dentist didn't believe me...
I was like "I sneezed and part of my tooth broke off..."
and they where like that is impossible...
and I am like "NOOOOO! it really happened"

I am getting tired right now

@NoTime yeah me too... I probably will end up working another 12 hour day...
although I considered sleeping in a bit (I am the boss I get to pick my own hours...) and actually working an 8 hour day...

3:31 AM
all work and no sleep . . . . makes Jack loose his mind and go an hero

I wake up 6am go to bed at earliest 1 am every day.. Sometimes get lucky. But I have a newborn, a wife that doesn't like sleep, and 2 other children which need to be driven to places.

@NoTime wow...you sound just like me...except I am the one that doesn't like sleep and I don't have a new born...

I'm an owl. Jet lag, school schedule, work schedule - doesn't matter. Go to bed around 2 - 3 am

I do have to children that can't drive though...
and I get up at 6 am, I try to be in bed by midnight...even though I don't want too...
/me is watching @RolandiXor

@daBoss I wish I could choose she likes lights everywhere

3:33 AM
@RolandiXor how did you get my wifi key anyways...I am going to have to change it again...
Yeah my wife went to bed 2 hours ago, and she doesn't start work for another week...
@RolandiXor I think there is some collusion going on here.. have you been communicating with my wife via morse code?

@daBoss who are you, who is your wife, and what is morse code?
@daBoss I can smell it.

O.o

Q: No login screen on startup, works after logging in and logging out again

RolandiXorI installed Ubuntu on a client's computer. At first - no issue, but after some updates and installs (including burg, which was not the problem as the problem remained after removing it, I could not get lightdm to load correctly, until I switched to upstart. Is this a known problem with a known f...

he is sniffing

What do you smell? you better not be smelling my wife!

3:38 AM
If anyone can help me with that question, I'd appreciate it!
@daBoss O_o
But she has no scent...

@RolandiXor if you promise not to sniff other people's wifi's or wives, maybe somebody will help XD

I don't like running multiple desktop managers with Ubuntu

@Serg rofl I'll stick to inhaling ethernet
@NoTime you mean, environments?

Well folks its been real but I really do need to rest my head...and hopefully smell my wife...
err I mean go to sleep...

@RolandiXor so you had 15.04 but switched back to upstart right ?
@daBoss rest well
and how do you login and log out if there's no lightdm and unable to access tty ?

3:42 AM
Good night

@daBoss LOL
good night!
@Serg It's running 15.04, and I removed the systemd entries from the bootlist as the problem originally only happened with systemd.

By the way...just for the record when I try to smell my wife she bats me away...
and she tells me to stop sniffing her like a dog...

@daBoss you should sniff instead. The verbiage makes a lot of difference.
:O
You have to do it like a cat!

@daBoss well, that's sad. We males are sensory beings after all. We watch and sniff a lot

lol...I am joking...I don't smell my wife...not on purpose anyways...

3:45 AM
rofl

Sometimes I can't help it...but I don't do it with intent...

must not lol, must not lol, must not lol

Before this conversation gets any stranger I really am leaving...

@RolandiXor tried reinstalling lightdm ? switching to gdm an option ?
o/

@Serg with GDM, there is no cursor, because the touchpad is disabled on boot (separate issue).
@daBoss lol good night :D
@Serg same issue with SDDM. I could reinstall Ubuntu, but I'd have to do a lot of configuring and installing of applications that I already did... again!

3:48 AM
Thus I leave you with Ninja Cat!

I'll be putting a bounty on the question (max bounty) tomorrow, as I'd like to get this finished this week.

lol what on earth?
Microsoft is a self parody now

Funny thing: Windows 10 just got decent command line editing capabilities , while Linux had them for like what . . . .20 years ?
Also, secure shell

Good night...

3:51 AM
@RolandiXor you might wanna add more info to your question. Like what you tried, what you see when the boot finishes and lightdm should show up, how do you log in if you cannot access tty or lightdm . . . .the more you help others to help you the better is probability of getting help out there

user image
3
@Serg lol I know :)
(Remember to check my rep, I've just not had the time to add all of the detail to the question).

@RolandiXor I've already checked when i was on the question. Just stating the obvious

@RolandiXor o/

It's best not to try to answer Ubuntu questions when you're not logged into Ubuntu. Makes it harder for duplicating problems. :)

Hi @NathanOsman have you brought George with you ? ^_^

3:54 AM
@NathanOsman hey

Nope.

Hi @Serg @NathanOsman

@Terrance true enough :) Or keep VM with Ubuntu on when you're on Windows. . . . or use cygwin like i do

@Serg Exactly! Maybe I need to set up a VM now so I can have the best / worst of both worlds. =)

@Serg I'll be adding the hardware info and whatever else I can tomorrow. I'm not on the system ATM.

3:56 AM
@RolandiXor cool, no rush
@Terrance, I think VM also allows booting already existing partition. I've done it with my Ubuntu. Booted Ubuntu , then VM with that same Ubuntu partition. Ubuntu-seption ! Only it crashed later on (oopsy)

BBL again lol

see ya

@Serg if you set it up right, and you have Ubuntu as an existing partition, it should run more efficient because it shouldn't have to expand / compress all the time.

@RolandiXor now that I noticed, this is a common issue. Some folks already reported that they cannot see lightdm but it works just fine. My 15.04 had same issue, only the screen wasn't black , it was white. I've disregarded it , and I think it went away after i changed the lightdm background image. But like i said, i didn't pursue this issue, it just casually went away
I'm pretty sure there should be workarounds for this already existing, since others reported the issue

Anyone know how to darken the window shadow? (I darkened the color of my terminal, but now w/e I have more than one open, they kind of meld into one another!)

4:02 AM
@AmagicalFishy my blind guess would be to use gsettings or gconf for that.
Post a question, and someone will definitelly answer that.

Alright, excellent. Thanks! :D

4:39 AM
Morning all :)
Morning @Serg
Morning @Terrance

@A.B. morning my friend
How's everything going on your side of the earth ?

4:57 AM
@A.B. good morning my friend!

@Serg Rainy :)
o/
@Terrance he, you have written a new answer

=)
OK, gotta get up early for a dentist appointment. Have a great night all!

sleep well, @Terrance
Rained in Denver as well in the afternoon. Now windy

Dentist sounds funny ...

Q: logdump -i<Inode#> gives partial information

R. RehmanI am using Ubuntu 14.04.2 (x64). While running the logdump -i<> command, i only get three lines of output. It stays the same even if I use the terminal as a root user. The file system is ext4.

@A.B. nice answer, though OP has said in comment to heemayl that he gave up on the question . It was a homework question anyway

6:17 AM
@Serg right, therefore the funny answer =)

don't you hate it when OP bails on a question ? Like , yeah, you guys might have solved my issue but I'm just gonna leave and never comeback

@Serg no. It's funny for me to answer useless questions too.
