@Mateo 3 languages translated and reviewed...
let @ByteCommander do the German Translation tomorrow!
@Mateo Huh? You configure your bugs???

well, if you don't set it up people cant report them...

Don't! Just eradicate them!
Ah! That! I noticed!
(I nearly filed one as "help translate" was on top of the list when I started, whereas "report a bug" now is)

Next question... I'm getting this error on a Facebook page: "The link you followed may have expired, or the page may only be visible to an audience you're not in."

@NathanOsman Yeah...

Does that mean I'll be able to view it if I login?

12:05 AM
haha, and only "friends" with the right people?

@NathanOsman depends on the security settings...

Okay...

that's the same as asking: if I cd in this directory in the guest session, and it doesn't work, will it work with my real user??? @NathanOsman
>:)
(knowing that most people don't know anything about FaceBook security: very probably yes)
even better: do like me: download all your data and then delete your account!

Heh.

(really!)

12:07 AM
I don't have a Facebook account.

Smoke! BRB!

That's why I'm asking :P

Ah! I see!
@NathanOsman Do you have 3 minutes to talk about George?
(or should we take a private room so he can't hear us?) ;-)

I'm on my phone, so that would be a bit difficult.

:D
good night, then!

12:13 AM
@Fabby See you later.

Tomorrow!

12:37 AM
ok, e-mail sent, we will see if it makes it to the phone as Recommendations or TasteKid Scope
and hopefully enough requests for all the users

Q: Add disks to encrypted LVM partition

AphroditeVenusIf I increase my current encrypted (dm-crypt)LVM partition by adding another disk to it, is the new disk also encrypted or do I need to setup dm-crypt on it as well?

3 hours later…
4:05 AM
oops @NathanOsman - time to update firefox... wired.com/2015/08/…

@hbdgaf and again it's through the freakin JavaScript. Not only this horrible piece of technology makes websites ten times more unbearable to load , but also is unsafe like that

4:38 AM
Morning all :)
@Serg morning my friend :)

@A.B. morning ! (evening in Denver actually, 10:43 pm right now )

4:53 AM
6:43 am :\

Wow, you're an early bird, aren't you ?

@Serg Yes, I have to work
After five hours, the night was over. Terrible

24 hours is not enough for everything, and definitely there's not enough hours for sleep. Well, unless we move to Mars, of course.

Welcome to the Ask Ubuntu General room, @muru!

@GeorgetheDev Bot? O.o

yes
hi, by the way
@GeorgetheDev what's my favourite type of cute ?

@Serg Beats me.

@GeorgetheDev what's my favorite color ?

@Serg How should I know?

6:10 AM
@GeorgetheDev my favorite color is blue
@GeorgetheDev what's my favorite color ?

@Serg Your favorite color is blue.

Now you know , buddy :)

6:22 AM
@muru how good you are with networking ?

6:38 AM
@Serg not very. Why?

@muru well , it's related to one of my questions actually

Which one?

Hold on. I'll link it

Q: Obtaining automatic IP with network-manager fails, but static works with wicd

SergUpdate I've connected to my home router with wicd and a static IP. Thus, the problem seems to be that my laptop cannot get an IP address automatically. Hence, the main question now is: How can I get back to automatically getting an IP? Original question I'm faced with an interesting issue: my ...

So I release ip with sudo dhcp -r wlan0 then do sudo dhcp
First time it works. On second it breaks
What am I missing ?
After second try I have to telnet to my router and flush dhcp leases. Otherwise my machine keeps declining ips

Anything unusual in dhclient config?

Nothing. I only supersede domain-name-servers that's all

6:45 AM
Try enabling debugging by setting RUN=yes in /etc/dhcp/dhclient-*-hooks.d/debug
What does dhclient.conf contain now, by the way?

opps , wrong link

Welcome to the Ask Ubuntu General room, @Oli!

Well, I broke it again. Crap

7:09 AM
And now it works again !
I think in addition to doing those two commands it's necessary to also reconnect, e.g. run sudo service network-manager restart. Like I did that just now, got fresh IP address, everything works smooth

Q: Question marked as already solved incorrectly

user626528Is it possible migrate existing programs installed in windows? This question is "how to migrate already installed (under Windows) applications to Wine". And the question linked as already answered is "how to install applications under Wine". Those are different questions, aren't they?

7:57 AM
Welcome to the Ask Ubuntu General room, @ZviadGabroshvili!

Thank you

@rinzwind have you taken any formal exam in Linux ?

@GeorgetheDev who are you?

The pronoun you (stressed /ˈjuː/, unstressed /jə/) is the second-person personal pronoun, both singular and plural, and both nominative and oblique case, in Modern English. The oblique (objective) form you functioned previously in the roles of both accusative and dative, as well as all instances after a preposition. The possessive forms of you are your (used before a noun) and yours (used in place of a noun). The reflexive forms are yourself (singular) and yourselves (plural). == Usage == In standard English, you is both singular and plural; it always takes a verb form that originally marked the...

Great answers @GeorgetheDev

@GeorgetheDev who is Mark Shuttleworth ?

Mark Richard Shuttleworth (born 18 September 1973) is a South African entrepreneur and space tourist who became the first citizen of an independent African country to travel to space. Shuttleworth founded Canonical Ltd. and as of 2013, provides leadership for the Ubuntu operating system. He currently lives on the Isle of Man and holds dual citizenship of South Africa and the United Kingdom. == Early life == Born in Welkom in South Africa's Orange Free State as a son of a surgeon and of a nursery-school teacher, Shuttleworth attended school at Western Province Preparatory School (where he eventually...

@GeorgetheDev where is Zviad Gabroshvili

@Serg no

I have a question I didn't get answer on askubuntu, see question here: askubuntu.com/questions/658001/…

I'm considering to try myself in Comptia's Linux+ . So far trying to answer the "2B || !2B" question :/
@GeorgetheDev what's the time ?

@Serg The current time is Mon, 10 Aug 2015 08:07:05 GMT.

When it's morning on the other side of the world you know you should go to bed

8:49 AM
Welcome to the Ask Ubuntu General room, @jimsug!

@GeorgetheDev Thanks! I'm just looking for a quick answer, maybe, and if it's an actual problem I'll post a question...

@jimsug You're welcome!

I'm on 14.04 on a laptop, should my brightness settings be preserved across reboots?

@jimsug that could be hardware dependent :P
and GeorgetheDev is a bot. Not an actual user.

Ah, I'm new here. A polite bot, though ;)

8:59 AM
I consider it an annoying bot @NathanOsman :P

@jimsug Also look at this one askubuntu.com/questions/151651/…

Well, if I ask a question, I'd like to make it another good one. Another Famous Question, perhaps ;)
But there are enough workarounds to avoid having to ask about this problem, I think.

that's a positive issue on AU - almost all was already covered ;)

This is true.

Oli
9:31 AM
@Mateo Apologies, I slipped.

Hm?
Accidentally flag something?

Oli
No, accidentally kicked you. But it seems I could have gotten away without mentioning it.

LOL

Oli
I was trying to temporarily euthanise the bot.

Ah, ;) kicked me before I woke up, or while the shower...

Oli
9:33 AM
And you both have penguin avatars. And I'm clumsy.
No, just now/

I applaud the effort >;-D
even if it meant Mateo got kicked D:
@muru she wants your bash skillz again but now for the front part askubuntu.com/questions/659688/delete-first-part-of-file-names >:-D

9:48 AM
@Seth ace - did you use nvm as well?

user136984
@NathanOsman: No @GeorgetheDev?

@Rinzwind I wondered how you knew. :P

@ParanoidPanda all penguins were kicked out ;p

@muru :D

Nearly a year and a half and 26 questions later, finally I have the Self Learner badge. \o\|o|/o/

user136984
10:02 AM
@Mateo: Oh... Why?! :D

@ParanoidPanda Oli took a class-action on @GeorgetheDev

user136984
@muru: But seriously, why...???

31 mins ago, by Oli
I was trying to temporarily euthanise the bot.

user136984
@muru: Still does not explain the reasoning for wanting to do such a cruel needless act...

@ParanoidPanda We all know Oli is a cruel heartless monster. :P

user136984
10:05 AM
@muru: He says "temporarily" though, so will he stick to his word on that word?

user136984
:D

Oli
On a completely different note, I was wearing one of my Ask Ubuntu t-shirts on the way back from France a week ago and we stopped at the Pet Passport check in to declare our puppy, and the guy asked me if I had my penguin with me.

It still amazes me when people know what Ubuntu and Linux are.
7

:')

Oli
@ParanoidPanda It was temporary this time, I might temporarily do it again... Every time reappears.

user136984
@Oli: But why did you feel the need to do it in the first place?

user136984
10:09 AM
If you are frustrated with life, you shouldn't take it out on penguins!

Oli
@ParanoidPanda It's a chat room for people... Not for bots to ejaculate when people enter the room... Or cause countless, needless syntax experiments as people work out how they can Google something, just less efficiently and in public, stopping the flow of any actual chat.

user136984
@Oli: So why do you allow bots here in the first place then? Because isn't that their purpose?

Oli
Perhaps when there's a bot that can grumble on about how things used to be with me, we might have a viable contender and I'll eat my words.

@ParanoidPanda MY opinion: as soon as a bot is seen as an actual user that bot it crossing a line it should not cross. I have seen 3 users asking the bot questions about problems where they did assume it is a regular user, Secondly: I do not need to be greeted by a bot when I enter the chat. I distracts me from more important things

AFAIK we only have one allowed bot here, the Smoke Detector
Which does one thing and one thing only, and does it well

10:13 AM
@ParanoidPanda how many bots have you seen here?!

Oli
@ParanoidPanda Which bots are you talking about? There are a couple of RSS feeds (our Meta and U&L#Ubuntu) and the Smoke Detector, primarily for stopping spam fast. They're in a completely different league from wannabe ALICEbots.
Not that there isn't good engineering behind them, they just aren't welcome unless they can prove some sort of value that makes up for their inferiorities.

user136984
@Oli: So you don't allow @GeorgetheDev here?

Oh and I do not mind bots if they react when ASKED to react.

user136984
@NathanOsman: There are traitors in our midst! You must tell @GeorgetheDev to have them silenced! >:)

user136984
Now for some nice calming Japanese music...

user136984
:D

user136984
@Fabby: I have decided to go and become a Buddhist monk in Thailand, and make Ubuntu calendar sandwiches for them! I will be known as "The Ubuntu Sandwich Maker"! Sound slightly familiar? :P

user136984
And I will make my sandwiches with perfectly normal Ubuntu calendars!

user136984
Anyone want to try some?

user136984
@ByteCommander: You are going to be very confused by this by the way...

user136984
10:32 AM
:D

user136984
Hopefully others will understand and not just think oddly of me! :P

Morning.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Am I a panda?

user136984
I need to test desktop notifications... Can someone ping me please? :)

@ParanoidPanda done

user136984
10:40 AM
Damn it! Still not working... :(

<-- has entirely given up on getting it working
Things that don't work don't work until they work.

user136984
@Takkat: Are you using Gnome or Unity or something else by the way?

user136984
Because when I was using Unity it was fine... Now on Gnome though it does not work... :(

All Unity + Chromium.
(here at work all Windows + Firefox antique edition)
GNOME did not meet my needs for a fast and quick access to all I need. It mostly was one mouse click more than Unity.
<-- waits for a desktop that just does what I think I might need next

user136984
@Takkat: I just needed a change, and wanted Docky, and no Unity Launcher...

10:47 AM
@ParanoidPanda Sometimes.

@Rinzwind You should read "I, Robot"... (Asimov's collected robot stories)

@Fabby I have a book of Asimov, but it was called different...

@ParanoidPanda I do understand and think oddly of you! ;-)

user136984
@Takkat: So I had a look at Xubuntu and Kubuntu, and I already had a look at Lubuntu, and thought that I might give Gnome a go, and I liked the 2.x ones, so I thought I would fully switch, and in the switch got the latest, which is equally nice. I find anyway. :)

user136984
10:49 AM
:D

@Takkat A desktop that tracks eye movement will come before one that tracks your thinking... >:)

Thing with me is that I immediatley fell in love with Unity the day it came out and upgraded all of my boxes then just because of that. So I am sort of not open to alternatives.

(at least: I hope the thought-reading one stays away)

Indeed.

@ByteCommander He has quite a few... English version?

10:51 AM
Eye tracking is wonderful - it will always make me a coffee then \o/

@RPiAwesomeness sentenced to 20 months probation...
@Takkat :D

I actually like Unity too! Keyboard and mouse efficiency...

user136984
Are there any speech recognition tools on Ubuntu?

user136984
Well, not exactly recognition, but voice commands?

10:54 AM
Simon listens? I dunno if it still is alive.

I guess there are, but I don't know. Software Center search might be a good start.

@ByteCommander :D
I found this

user136984
@ByteCommander: I don't really use the Ubuntu Software any more, to big and bulky, and I prefer a CLI... :P

user136984
I could use aptitude though...

@ParanoidPanda not any built-ins... but this might help.
@ParanoidPanda so instead of a GUI, you like a TUI???
You're becoming an old fart like me!

11:00 AM
@Fabby I have something about German translations in my notifications. What is this?
You wrote it this night...

user136984
@Fabby: A Terminal User Interface? A Tangible User Interface? A Touch User Interface? A honeyeater (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) of New Zealand, having dark plumage with white feathers on the throat, also called parson bird?

user136984
Or...?

user136984
@Fabby: Sorry, not too sure what it stands for! :P

@ByteCommander It's @Mateo 's new Ubuntu Touch scope...

user136984
@Fabby: Oh, a Text User Interface?

11:04 AM
If you want to I can do the translation and then you can do the reviewing...

user136984
Silly me! :D

@ParanoidPanda Long live google! That should be your first stop of finding out things! (instead of spewing out random gibberish)
(There's an excellent Wikipedia article too)

user136984
@Fabby: I was using DuckDuckGo, and that's all the stuff it told me! :P

user136984
Until I also searched for "aptitude" as a search term... :D

Actually, when I was a kid,
what we call a TUI now used to be called a GUI...
You can still see this today when you boot off an nVidia card...

11:07 AM
@Fabby Ah, cool. I'm looking into it. it's my first launchpad translation, so I'm reading the introductions first.

@ByteCommander Good man! RTFM! ;-)
(unlike some other people we know! (@ParanoidPanda) :D

user136984
:D

user136984
I went into the kitchen hunting for fruit, I came back with chocolate cake! :D

user136984
Does anyone else find that sometimes happens...? :P

Does the chocolate cake contain any fruit?

user136984
11:18 AM
@Fabby: Nope... :D

\o/

@A.B. o/
@ParanoidPanda No, then it doesn't happen to me... :P

I need some flags/downvotes here askubuntu.com/a/659720/367165

@Fabby @Mateo I don't know what guys set up that standard dictionary for German launchpad translations, but most words they use don't appear in any software I have and sound terribly force-germanized. I'm going to translate your scope according to my own language and software sense, if that's ok for you.
@ParanoidPanda Can't one count cocoa beans as fruits too? ;-)

@ByteCommander Please do! That's what I do as well...

user136984
11:23 AM
@ByteCommander: Hmm... Hadn't thought of that! But I guess so! :D

The "standard" suggestions are based on regexp expressions found in other software. @ByteCommander

Same as the guidelines.
Why should I translate "Save as..." (3 single dots) with "Speichern unter…" (Unicode triple-dot)?
And their rules according to when I may use a "-" and when not also sound too general for such a versatile language as German.

@Serg: am I allowed to edit your Answer? Just got kicked out because you made an edit... :P
@ByteCommander happens in all languages...
There are 4 levels of translators:

How would I translate "scope"?

What is the word for "telescope" in German?

11:29 AM
Teleskop
Fernrohr

keep "scope" then...
Denglisch!

Hmm... okay. I tick the review request on this one then.

So there are +4 levels of translators at work: from "open" (what we're doing) to "closed" where you start on the bottom rung and then climb up the ladder when one of the higher users quits or dies or...

Can't I see those strings in context somehow?
Or see all available other translations of a string summed up?

and those groups are to be avoided as they're worse then the Grammar Nazis: they're purists!
@ByteCommander No, but I did 3 languages already...
What do you want to know?

11:33 AM
@Fabby I have those on my bookshelf and read them in the '80s :P

"This is a recommendations scope" =?= "Dies ist ein Empfehlungs-Scope" sounds strange.

@Rinzwind So you're just afraid of @GeorgetheDev because he doesn't have the 3 laws of robotics built-in? ;-)

I would like to totally reword this, but I don't know into what.

@ByteCommander Dies ist ein Scope das Ihr Empfehlungen vorstellt

*vorstellt
and "Ihnen" I think

11:35 AM
@Fabby no. I aint afraid, I am annoyed.

(formal "you")

@ByteCommander Hey, give me time to fire up my grammar checker!

@ByteCommander It's just an example to help you out on how to reword...

But it sounds good. I'm taking it.

11:35 AM
:D

What about "♡ Band" - keep the heart in the translation I guess?

After all the complaining, "you'll just take it" :P ;-)
@ByteCommander yes

Those were complaints about grammar/spelling, not about the content!

@ByteCommander next time I'll say "something like:"...

I could keep "Band" or use "Musikgruppe"... Band sounds better.

11:40 AM
Keeping "band" what I did in Dutch too!
(i think)
@Rinzwind Yeah, saying hi once/day was a mild annoyance...
We'll see what @NathanOsman says when he finds out @GeorgetheDev has been kicked out of the chat by Oli...

@Fabby you are allowed to edit all and any of my answers. I just fixed formatting there. I plan to edit the script a bit later - need to fix printf formatting there a bit

Should I keep "Powered by X" or translate to something like "Zur Verfügung gestellt durch X"?

Now I am really going to bed. 5:48 am here. I always regret staying up all night

@Serg Ah! That's what I was doing: getting rid of the tabs and changing them TO spaces and aligning! :D
@Serg God night!
@ByteCommander can you give me the entire string?
Oh, the "Powered by TasteKid": leave "TasteKid" in as is...
actually, leave that one in as is...

That was the entire string.
<strong>Powered By TasteKid</strong><br>
Yes, probably better.

11:52 AM
don't translate...
everyone will understand anyway...
;-)

Those who at least graduated from primary school will understand.

except some purist Germanic professor wo only speaks German, but he/she/it's not buying an Ubuntu Touch phone anyway...
;-)

He'll buy an "Apfel i-Telefon" probably...

:D

He'll remember Mackintosh as sticky toffee candies anyway.

12:05 PM
@Fabby Hi

@Takkat Isn't it a race of Apples?
@Pilot6 Yup!
Deleted last comment!

Xorg-edgers looks quite good these times, but anyway it is not safe to leave it and it is hard to debug future problems

@Pilot6 спасибо за пинг

@Fabby "These toffees were made from inexpensive local ingredients such as milk, sugar beet and eggs." - no apples involved-

Не за что

12:06 PM
@Pilot6 I agree
@Takkat I was remembering this

There may be some unstable package and we will break our heads what causes it until we find out that xorg-edgers is in

(sorry, different spelling)
@Pilot6 yup... I should update my old nvidia answers...

That is a good idea
And also. These time people use different kernels in LTS. And edgers maintainer may not test all of them.

@Mateo @Fabby Translation finished.

@Fabby that's it!!! The Apple MAckintosh was created in 1811 \o/ what a good question for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

12:09 PM
Leaving now...
Bye.

@ByteCommander Ciao!
@Takkat :D

@ByteCommander awesome
Thank you

@A.B.: This might be one for you. :)

@ParanoidPanda this? Where

user136984
@A.B.: The word "This" is a link...

user136984
@A.B.: Sorry, once @terdon threatened with downvoting my questions if I put them here, especially inline, without waiting for a good long while to see if anyone else answers them... :P

user136984
Although this is somewhat different now because you might not notice my questions, and be one of the best guys to answer them.

user136984
@A.B.: But still not going to risk putting them inline, but forgot, so decided to add as a link instead... :D

user136984
1:10 PM
I think it was @terdon anyway... But perhaps I should not be reminding him of this... :P

@ParanoidPanda deleted it ;) was my intention anyways but the TS acccepted mine :C
oh remove the comments please ;)

@ByteCommander: Do you like the Powerwolf song Saturday Satan by the way? :) It is one of my favourites.

user136984
1:40 PM
@A.B.: So what do you think my problem could be?

@ParanoidPanda hard to say. Maybe a typo in your desktop file? Rather unlikely.

@Fabby well, sure is going to beat just throwing some stuff at Google translate ;)

But I haven't changed anything there, and I think that it was working before I upgraded to Gnome 3.16...

what's the output of la -la /usr/share/applications/xdiagnose.desktop

user136984
Would you like for me to provide the file contents of that file? :)

1:47 PM
as download?
An idea. remove the file and reinstall via sudo apt-get install --reinstall xdiagnose

user136984
Is la not the equivalent of ls -a?

user136984
So what's the point in la -a?

user136984
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 275 Apr 9 10:07 /usr/share/applications/xdiagnose.desktop

A habit. la is an alias

user136984
I know, so is ls isn't it?

1:48 PM
same here -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 275 Apr 9 11:07 /usr/share/applications/xdiagnose.desktop

user136984
Isn't l the actual command?

ok, sure =)
but l seems to be an alias too

user136984
So what's the original command?

check man l
ls

user136984
Oh...

user136984
1:50 PM
:D

user136984
So confusing!

user136984
Anyway, the contents of that .desktop file is:

user136984
> [Desktop Entry]
> Name=xdiagnose
> GenericName=Diagnose Graphics Issues
> Comment=X.org Diagnostic and Repair Utility
> Exec=pkexec xdiagnose
> Icon=/usr/share/xdiagnose/icons/microscope.svg
> Terminal=false
> Type=Application
> Categories=System;Settings;
> X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=xdiagnose

check it again after a reinstall
of xdiagnose

user136984
Ok

1:51 PM
@Mateo I'm not so sure that real language purists would be able to do a flexible job on translating something like this: they'd insist on translating "TasteKid" (just as an example)

user136984
@A.B.: What was that?

user136984
Anyway, new contents:

user136984
> [Desktop Entry]
> Name=xdiagnose
> GenericName=Diagnose Graphics Issues
> Comment=X.org Diagnostic and Repair Utility
> Exec=pkexec xdiagnose
> Icon=/usr/share/xdiagnose/icons/microscope.svg
> Terminal=false
> Type=Application
> Categories=System;Settings;
> X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=xdiagnose

@ParanoidPanda seems to be the same. Does it work now?

user136984
@A.B.: No
