Oh, looks like someone already answered it! :D :P

user136984
But what I really don't understand in the main SE site is why everyone is so negative, like the fact that even duplicates are voted down immediately by everyone...

@Toroidal That's because on SE the majority of users are developers who don't come out enough in the real world! >:)
@A.B. Happens most of the time...

@Toroidal there are sharks over there

Upvotes mostly come from people like you and me... Not the OPs themselves...

plus i'm sure that was asked like 50 times over there

user136984
3:06 PM
I end up having to delete most of my posts there because the amount of down votes starts to actually damage my rep points there! :D

@A.B. When was the last time you personally ran out of upvotes?
;-)

plus the general post about why they were going to start doing that in the first place

@Fabb
@Fabby hmm, never? :)

user136984
But I even at some point got an automated system warning me that my questions had not been taken well and that I could get blocked from asking questions if the community kept on responding so negatively to my questions! :D

@A.B. There you go! Start up-voting more yourself! :P >:)

3:09 PM
one reason I rarely ask questions, unless I come to something I haven't seen before, or can't solve

@Fabby Ok :c)

99% of the time another question was already asked, and about 85% already answered for me
so start using google with the "site:askubuntu.com"

oh my. Just noticed tons of optimization I need to do..

Happier than the above.

@Toroidal I think that's as happy as Pandas get..

@Fabby I really like your custom comments, but if you post a custom one please choose "no comment needed" when reviewing in the low quality posts queue that way this doesn't happen. I can just imagine the face of the OP when he sees 3 comments all saying the same thing :P
@muru your comment here is such an understatement it's beautiful:
Why do that when Unix & Linux is alive and welcoming? — muru 2 hours ago
All those Area 51 proposals for random *nix distros when we have the perfect site right there..

4:50 PM
@Seth :D Thanks for the heads-up! Will not happen any more... I was trying to populate the back-end database with the right close reason! :/

@Fabby Answers don't have "close reasons", they just get deleted. All that menu does is add a comment :)

Sorry to be unclear: I do understand now. I was unaware 2 minutes ago! ;-) :P

No problem. Everyone has to learn it somewhere :)
@Mateo So the new python script works 100% fine for me as well as the udev method.. I'm going to amend my answer with it.

Cool, I should try it out.

@Seth
Hi :)

Hi @KasiyA!

OP solved his problem by "I solved this problem by disabling Lightlocker." please open his question to posting his solution as an answer. thanks

Q: [Solved - Lubuntu Screen goes dark when switch user]

IanI just installed Lubuntu. Whenever I switched from the main user to a second user account, the screen when to almost zero brightness. The screen stayed dark until I switched back to the main account. I solved this problem by disabling Lightlocker.

done @KasiyA.

thank you :)

no problem!

New fancy HTML5 Youtube capabilities :D

I'm running FF 37..

@Seth Notice anything different about Youtube's HTML5 player?
I'm curious

Haven't really checked.
Can't atm but I'll let you know if I notice anything.
I doubt I will though.. ;)

That's fine
I think it's just enabling more quality types than 360p and 720p

I'm pretty youtube will make sure you don't notice a difference.

5:36 PM
Not sure though
lol, probably
Guake is awesome

o/
Lol... I hate popup ads that start speaking to me.
"Warning! Your computer is infected with a virus..." blaring out of my speakers is not exactly cool.

5:53 PM
haha
nope.

If anyone wants to know why Firefox add-ons aren't updated often, this is why: I submitted an update on March 5. I'm still waiting for it to be reviewed.

Wow..

@NathanOsman Which add-on and what does it do???
(If you're making smth it's probably a must-have!)

>:)
Sorry for the late reply: reading up on ReST...
(didn't even know it existed, though it looks like new wine in old bottles) ;-)
Installed, but mostly to remind me to know it exists. Thanks!

A: How is 'rm -rf /' able to delete all files in the system?

MainMa I haven't tried this command on Ubuntu (for obvious reasons) so I am not sure if Ubuntu will allow its execution. I did. rm -rf / --no-preserve-root was running in a root session opened directly on the machine, while I was also connected through ssh from another machine, using the root accou...

@RPiAwesomeness i'm on 38 ;)
using dev edition...

oh, right. I totally forgot.

oh, do you have to put it somewhere instead of running?

You'll need to install acpi.

7:02 PM
ah

(sorry for the delay, I bound tilda to the grave and then couldn't get code formatting xD)
@Mateo I couldn't find a more accurate way of detecting if the power was plugged in or not. dbus send the changed event but it doesn't tell me if it was plugged in or unplugged so I have to figure that out myself.

this could make an awesome app if you package it up, have a settings plugin - maybe even have a low battery warning

hm, that's actually an interesting idea..

yay, it only put up one message for plugging in \o/

I'm still not sure why the udev method didn't work.. It worked perfectly for me every time. It's just odd.
Oh well at least we got it working :D

7:05 PM
all it needs is to run with user level, so you can put it anywhere, and have it in the startup programs

yup. That was a disadvantage to the udev method, it had to jump through more hoops. The disadvantage of this method is it requires a constantly running process.

yeah...

7:31 PM
i have a question about grep
`ps -ef |grep find`

` root 991 990 5 21:07:54 ? 0:16 find /opt -xdev ( -type f -o -type l ) -exec ls -n {} ;`

why is root in there

isn't that more of a question about ps or find? ;P

uh mind yea its on find

so root is the UID of the user who owns the process.

@seth, ive been working straight through a couple of days

that doesn't sound good for your health D:

the life of a coder
another issue would i need a bash script to run this command at a specific time?

You haven't explained what it is you are exactly trying to do but have you looked at cron for that?

no, i haven't, its for a DB to find and copy into a spreedsheet

Anything involving running commands at specific intervals => crontab -e

even on Archlinux?

even on Arch, to my knowledge.

7:40 PM

@Mateo ping test
yay:
that is better, this one should be built in on ubuntu: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gnotifier

now I can minimize and still see pings ;)

> "Python is executable pseudocode. Perl is executable line noise."
that's so true..

7:53 PM
I remember when Marco and I tried to implement that with an NPAPI plugin.

@NathanOsman Wasn't that for Chrome though?

Yes, though it worked in FF too.

Ah.

then chrome made its own notification system... :/

I mostly use PushBullet these days.

7:57 PM
what is that one?

It's for cross-device notifications.
Anytime I get a notification on my Android phone, it pops up on my desktop.
I can also use it to send links from Firefox to my phone and vice-versa.

that sounds cool

8:30 PM
@NathanOsman that's kind of neat.

Back when I was trying to get a Nexus 6, I set up a script on my Pi to constantly monitor the order page for new inventory and used PushBullet to send me an alert when some was available.

Yeah, I remember you saying something about that. Didn't know the name of the library though.

Of course, in the end, that was no help to me since it took two computers connected to two different Internet connections each with multiple browsers open constantly reloading the page with a UserScript installed that would automatically add the item to the cart and proceed to checkout before I succeeded.
:P

I'm a firm believer that businesses that sell things like that should allow "pre-buy to secure your slot on the waiting list" and a ticker of "XYZ units shipped so far"

^--- this

8:34 PM
You know, so you can just go ahead and pay for it. Find out what point you are in the queue. Subtract units already shipped. Check rate of supply. Satisfied polite customers.

I still wonder if we weren't part of some covert strategy to help perform some sort of DDoS test. Many other people were doing the same thing.
:P

Is PushBullet free?

Yes.

For some reason I was under the impression that it wasn't.

The app, add-on, and service are all free.

8:37 PM
That does make me how they're monetizing though...

^^

I think they have VC funding :P

Well yes, but VCs like to have a "future monetization" sort of plan most of the time >.> I guess they could be building apps with the api that they then sell, and they're just being cool about making the API/service public. Or they're trying to get app/user lock in before they start charging for access to the API - like most of the "google projects" apis.

What about the "yo" app?
Rests his case.
:)

yo!

8:42 PM
Now would be the perfect time for FlackBot to yell "YO!".
But alas, he is not that smart.
He will say "hi" in the sandbox though.

so, currently debating in mind whether to get this or not: ninjablocks.com

@Toroidal Hello

user136984
:D

8:45 PM
yeah, and we already have chromecast and philips and wemo lights, so would be fun

Definitely!
That site needs a <title> tag though.. And a favicon.

plus android keeps loosing the connection to the chromecast during playback because of the phone sleeping...

@Mateo huh, I would expect a setting for that.
Mine keeps the wifi going all the time..

wait a second...

oh, well I turn off a bunch of stuff to save power...

8:50 PM
I'm not sure how happy the people in this apartment would be if I started tampering with the wiring to get a home automation kit working.

@hbdgaf were those the ninjablocks on that one?
@NathanOsman a lot of them are just little boxed you plug in between the cord and outlet

@Mateo something like... but no - not actual ninjablocks.

But how do they receive commands then if not through the home's wiring?

some kind of networking

I suppose they could connect to our router...

Q: Troubleshooting SSH on Ubuntu Server

user664509I am trying to setup SSH-key authentication on Digital Ocean Cloud server. I first added my rsa_id.pub to my account and autoloaded it to the ubuntu droplet when I created it. There seems to be an error access the public rsa key but I changed all the file permissions in the /etc/ssh to 777(I know...

The router's antennas are so powerful the range extends to the sidewalk outside :P

some are bluetooth, some have wifi, looks like they came up with something else as well
like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZigBee looks like it chains the network from the devices

Heh... that could actually work.
Except... what about light fixtures that are directly wired to one of the circuits?
The hallway has two lights that consist of a light socket coming out of the roof.
How would you control those?

light bulbs
the build in a device into the bulb

That's pretty cool. Can you recommend a brand / service?

8:57 PM
@Mateo zigbee is actually REALLY popular for low power consumption radio enabled appliances

I might try to talk the family into this :)

the phillips hue ones look nice, I have two of the ones that just fade
want to get the color ones as well
my light switch was wemo, but it required a bit more instillation
but they do have bulbs too: belkin.com/us/p/P-F7C033

I wonder if this boondoggle evidences on Ubuntu? plus.google.com/u/0/+WorldofGnomeOrg/posts/JQ7D2RXZHjQ

maybe, multiple desktops have been known to mess things up

you know what would be nice? if libnotify-osd had a progress-bar widget or some way to track notification affinity. it would be neat to have a just notify-osd gui for automatic apt-get updates... among other things.

9:19 PM
@hbdgaf that would be fun, they have a progress bar

orly? neat... and i didn't know that. does it just not dismiss until it hits 100%

hm...
that might be the tricky bit
anyway this is what I found so far:

i'll have to google around a bit. a progress-bar in notify-osd, i would expect to (either out of the box or with a little work) not dismiss. i mean, do you really want the notification to keep regenerating instead of just updating? i think that is the sticky part.

they have a auto time out, but if it is sending a percent every few seconds it wouldn't be much of a problem, or you could keep sending the current status every second

yeah, but then it would scroll on the right and look messed up if you added another notification in the middle.

9:27 PM
kind of like the volume if you go back and forth on the volume it stays and replaces the current notification

Yes, like that

why does askubuntu work so different from stackoverflow?

because we are awesome ;)

^^ i was going to say something else, but good answer

stackoverflow works better.

9:30 PM

There are too many questions at 0.

@CaptainGiraffe sure. and the userbases are massively different sizes with massively different goals. so if you like one... it's probably a better fit for you than the other.

I want to contribute.
Not sure, this is a good way to win me over.

@CaptainGiraffe well, that comes from trying to be a user support rather than professional exchange of info type of thing

Well, I've found that if someone comes in to a room swinging, there is always at least one guy that will swing back. Want to start over?

9:33 PM
@hbdgaf My apologies

so, how would we get send the apt percentage to notification?

@CaptainGiraffe No apology necessary. If you don't like the 0 voted questions percentage - then you already know how contributing would be pleasing to you. So do that.
@Mateo that is the question...

have it run apt from a interactive script and grep the progress somehow?

I imagine there's an api for that.

Voting is definitely slow here @CaptainGiraffe

9:37 PM

oooo

raises hand There are quite a few questions in the everyday queue that is "my box can't run ubyntu" along with "My wireless don't work".

in which usually a comment "what wireless, what box" gets them to enter more info or if not close as unclear
oh, and @chili555 is amazing with wireless, so find him if you need help on that ;)

I am having trouble finding any drivers for the Asus AC55r WiFi Adapter. It is using AC-1300 Wireless and the USB ID is 0b05:17eb.
FFirst page

yeah... what is your point? add "wireless" to your ignored tags if that isn't your thing

9:50 PM
I am here but stepping away for a few minutes, @CaptainGiraffe. Do you have a question posted about your device?

chili to the rescue!

Ahh! I see it now, @CaptainGiraffe I will be back in a while to help.

@Oli hit one of your answers in an audit
was like "oh, that one looks just fine" ;)

Good evening everybody.

10:06 PM
used to watch that show a lot

Don't know that guy... Should I?

Alfred Hitchcock did some great stuff. Not as much a fan of his literary works, but his films and shorts were decent.

@ByteCommander yeah, might have heard of his movies
but, in the series he would come out and introduce the short, and would always say "good evening"

That is A. Hitchcock? Of course I "know" him then.
I just did not know how he looks like... :/

oh, do you have netflix, they have his series up there

10:22 PM
No, have not...
I just set up my first Win7 machine btw.
I only have 18GB left to install Ubuntu as dual-boot... :(

10:42 PM
I'm trying to brainstorm a Qt class that provides a JSON API based on the slots in the class.
So void doSomething(int p1, int p2); becomes the path /doSomething that accepts POST requests with two parameters.
...or something vaguely similar to that.

Sorry @NathanOsman - I would never do that, so I can't focus on it. Something something - introspection. Something something REST API builder. Something something Qt.

??? You make question marks circulating in orbits around my head... O.o

Lol :)

11:04 PM
Grr... I told my fresh Win7 to install updates on 21:14. Now it's 1:06 and it did only 60 of 176. I'm getting tired!

11:27 PM
@chili555 I don't think the guy needing your help is here anymore :/

Sometimes, the answer is No.

@chili555 Really? I thought those days were long gone.
If I remember correctly, you're the resident wifi expert right?
In which case, I'll have to take your word for it :(

Allegedly, I am!
I believe it is a very new device

11:42 PM
@chili555 Wow, that's sad :(
At least wifi dongles are pretty cheap these days.

Yeah, that is sad. I hadn't seen a device that didn't work under Linux in years.
Oh and @Seth, a little bird told me you were badmouthing Perl. Tsk :P

It is sad. There are a very few.

@terdon Bad mouthing is probably the wrong word, but that's relative :p

@Seth Not singing its praises and sacrificing ewes to it every Sunday == badmouthing.

77/176 Win7 updates installed after 5h 30min! Aargh, that drives me nuts!
