Q: Linux kernel version suffix + CONFIG_LOCALVERSION

ZephyrOn system start up I currently see Linux 4.0.0-rc6yy and 4.0.0-rc6yy.old from the bootloader menu. I'm not certain where they came from. I suspect "yy" is arbitrary but can someone explain the ".old" suffix? Also can someone explain what CONFIG_LOCALVERSION and CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO is from ....

@Mateo According to the avast-plugin, the site is at least not full with malware. Google also finds it. I think it is a valid site, but no idea whether it is better or not. You should be able to visit it without danger...

A: Use ffmpeg on linux, without administrative rights

giomasceWhat you need is a static build of FFMPEG. There are probably a lot around. I suggest you http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/, which is advertised on the FFMPEG main site, so is probably reliable. You can download both latest release (2.4.1) and git snapshot. Unless you know what you are doing, use...

Q: Why don't people who down-voted on a question revisit that question if it has been edited to make it better for up-votes?

ethanbmnzLet's say that you have a question that got down-voted. And then it gets edited to try get upvotes. And those that down-voted don't up-vote because they don't see the question has been edited. Why don't people revisit questions that they down-voted on after a edit for the good? Is it because of ...

@Fabby Hi Fabby! I just finished a Win7 fresh install and update marathon... I started it on 21:15 yesterday and finished this morning at about 11:00... It started to hang some time around 02:00 and did not continue until I restarted 3 times this morning... :P Now I know why I love my unicorn!
I'm going on a walk now enjoying the few sunbeams around here... See you later.

I'll be reight back: busy in U&L (give me 5 minutes)

I'll be back in an hour or so... No need to hurry :)

Q: Default wallpaper showing on login screen

user136984
Or at least elaborate on what the other person said. :)

yay, found the solution to my touch-pad right corner pasting text on palm rest problem: synclient RTCornerButton=0
@Toroidal yeah, colors aren't wallpapers - so you would need to make a flat color wallpaper then do what he said

user136984
@Mateo Ok, so what about these system default colours and gradients that you can choose from in system settings? Are they not set as files in any way? Or how do they work?

it is just code
not real walpapers
no files

user136984
1:54 PM
@Mateo So is there no way of getting it to be the 'wallpaper' for the login screen?

do you have gimp?

user136984
@Mateo Yes

make a graphic the size of your screen, then paint it the color you want, save export it as a jpg, then set the permission of that file as the answer said, set it as your background

user136984
@Mateo Ok, I'm not exactly so sure about how to make this gradient in GIMP... But I guess that if there is no other way then I will just have to try...

Ah, ok, found it, thanks! :)

I had to do the same thing on my mac once because they didn't want to put a pure black background color as an option...

user136984
@Mateo: What package would be best to write to on LaunchPad about suggesting that it would be good for the gradient or colour that you choose which is not a file but just code to be also somehow set as the login wallpaper? As I would like to do that but not sure which package it would be... :)

2:02 PM
maybe against unity greeter for lightdm - something like "display color and gradients on login when user selects them as their background" would probably be an ok way to phrase it

@Mateo How do you get the notification to come up like that? Is it just the browser that you are using or is it some special setting or something? As I have Google Chrome and it just comes up a plain white box with just text on it.

@Mateo So I should file a report here: launchpad.net/lightdm ? :)

that is for you to decide.

    Version 3.14.2-0ubuntu5 uploaded on 2015-03-03
    file-roller source package in Utopic
    Version 3.10.2.1-0ubuntu5 uploaded on 2014-07-11

So I think i will do that bug report

I'm guessing that the versions shown below are the Ubuntu package versions and not the actual file-roller.
Or they just don't care about launchpad. It's not an Ubuntu app after all. The file-roller home page lists the newer ones:

I had a question.AFAIK openstack, juju etc are the softwares used in cloud computing sector and not the platforms themselves. on the other hand AWS is a platform. For about a hour I'm looking for a list of open source softwares like openstack, but all I come up with are platforms. :)

@TheX Okay. That's fine. Does your SSD have 2.74 GB/s read & 1.3 GB/s write?

@RPiAwesomeness I don't know off the top of my head...

@TheX No. I'm ~99% sure it doesn't :D

4:49 PM
@RPiAwesomeness let me live in my dream world would ya?

;) It's fine. These things are ridiculous. Mine isn't that good by a long shot :)

Gosh I was just in Chicago last weekend...
Not sure I really want to go...
I thought this said "well we can't all live in a dictator..." lol

@TheX Whoa...

Then I re-read it...

@Fabby: Is this panda better? :D :P

@Toroidal Well, that depends entirely on your definition of "better"...
Yes, it's more girly! ;-) >:)

user136984
@Fabby Oh come on, at least I don't have the pink version! :D :P

Yes, that's true! But you still have the fluffy stuffed toy version!!!
How about this one:
(need a smoke... BRB)

user136984
@Fabby What is that they are eating?

What do polar bears eat???
Seals!
Ask @Mateo and @NathanOsman if you don't believe me: they're Canadians and know how to handle murder bears...
>:)

5:35 PM
why most of the users don't use their own photo on Ask-Ubuntu

@MuditKapil The same reason why you don't...
;-)

there are all people who are so intelligent if someone schmucks like me first visit this site he or she got confused

@Fabby who said I was from Canada? ;) I only passed through once on the way to the Niagara falls

@Mateo My apologies...

We do look like twins ;p

5:43 PM
hey where did that code go? @Mateo?

I thought both of the penguins were Canadians...

@Fabby Hi back! Sorry that it took so long...

@ByteCommander You've got a life! :-) GOOD! :D

community, user number 1 is some person or a software

@Fabby Yeah. ;) I came back some time after 3 o'clock and then decided to install Ubuntu first.

5:49 PM
:D

I definitely like it more now than Windows. It was fully operational after less than 2h!

I hope you have 3 paritions now: /, home and swap

No home. Why should I?

If you re-install (or RESTORE) you don't have to restore your data

(Btw there were only 18GB left...)

Hmm... it's mainly a machine for the whole family to access the internet. Most of them will use Win7 anyway.

It's Friday, after 19:00, haven't had a drink in two weeks, so:

@Fabby how much time you have devoted to write such a great answer

I'm raising my glass to everyone active in the chat room!

Cheers! :)

Skoll, Salute, Egesegedre, Prosit, Gezondheid, Santé!
@MuditKapil Which great answer? :D

this one actually very little time...
That one actually so long that it really pissed off @ThomasW, so I had to delete it and re-create it...

@Fabby ya but it is a great answer

I got so many down-votes while writing it with a "warning, work in progress" that it showed up in the low quality review queue so many times that it actually pissed off a lot of people
ThomasW. was actually the only one who told me that he was down-voting it and that I should edit it off-line and then upload within a reasonable amount of time...
@MuditKapil (good advice for you if you decide on writing the same kind of complex answer...)

@Fabby it catches the eye of the user who suddenly see this answer for different scenario
