12:25 AM
What are you running that it is so important not to restart?

chromium. at least that's where the memory leak that makes my system non-responsive is located.

Tim
@Mateo: an time consuming OCR program, and many text editing in emacs running in gnome teminal

@hbdgaf lucasarts/Tim Shaefer (sp?) Same guy as broken age.

relevant to the previous conversation.

@JourneymanGeek watch the YouTube ;)

Tim
12:30 AM
@hbdgaf: I am running firefox, not chromium. Do you mean kill it in a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) may help? If it doesn't, I won't be able to run firefox to ask question then?

He ment that is what usually kills his system :p

I wasn't commenting on your question particularly. I just know that on my system, my web browser eventually swells to consume everything and make the system unresponsive and I reboot.

killing lightdm will that stop programs too - like logging out?

that's possible if the DE is a child process. it could work. i just trust a full restart more.

Is there a way to force a switch user? That might help
Otherwise I would monitor the OCR with top(htop) wait till that is done and hope emacs has autosave :/

12:35 AM
^^ that sounds JUST LIKE something flackbot would say.

Tim
@Mateo My OCR is runing in Windows runing in Virtualbox. I can't find the OCR program in top
Any way I can try to switch between programs' windows?

Ah @jrg maybe you have some command line tricks to get a useable desktop for him?
Hm, what if you installed a lightweight wm and ran that on top of this?

Tim
You mean install some other wm now?
install and then run it will kill my running programs, right?

Nah, just something like metacity instead of compiz
Then maybe a panel program
7
A: How do I disable compiz and enable metacity with the command-line?

Eliah KaganRunning metacity --replace from a virtual console doesn't work because it doesn't know which X11 display to attach to. The default behavior is to attach to the display it runs in...and a shell running in a virtual console isn't on any X11 display. Instead, you must manually specify the display. ...

Q: How do I use the GNOME Panel in Unity?

Haguilar91I really need to use the GNOME Applets, is there a way to do it?

I think you can still install gnome-panel
DISPLAY=:0 gnome-panel
After installing it

Tim
12:57 AM
sudo apt-get install gnome-panel
then where to put DISPLAY=:0 gnome-panel?

In your tty, Ctrl+alt+f1
Or 2-6
Then once it starts go back to 7

Tim
I will try gnome-panel later. I just run "gtk-window-decorator & disown" from a console (ctrl--alt-F1), but I seem to need to associate it with the desktop. how can I do that?
Is it "DISPLAY=:0 gtk-window-decorator & disown"?

DISPLAY=:0
@Tim worth a shot

Tim
what does DISPLAY=:0 mean?

Just to send it to your GUI
You can you run more than one x display
Then those will have numbers assigned to them
:0 is default on Ubuntu

1:03 AM
if he's trying to get unity back up, that won't fix it since unity is a compiz plugin. just a thought.

Tim
"DISPLAY=:0 gtk-window-decorator & disown" doesn't solve the problem

Yeah...

Tim
@hbdgaf do you mean gnome-panel?

Try installing metacity

Tim
One problem: It takes 1 or 2 min to switch from 7 to 1 by ctrl-alt-F1, but immediately from 1 to 7 by ctrl-alt-F7. Can I make the switch from 7 to 1 faster?

1:07 AM
You can only ask so much of a broken system, we will be lucky to get any desktop going to save your work before restarting...

Tim
Is it right to run:
sudo apt-get install metacity
sudo apt-get install gnome-panel
DISPLAY=:0 gnome-panel?

First do
metacity --display=:0 --replace
After installing it

Tim
that is all? How about installing and running gnome-panel

Then gnome panel
Hopefully that should be enough to access the different windows

@RPiAwesomeness around?

1:16 AM
Yeah fog machines!

how do you ping a local computer on Ubuntu?

ping IP

what if I want to do it indefinitely?
like on Windows is it ping -t x.x.x.x

Tim
Thanks Mateo. Metacity and gnome-panel are now running. But I lose track of my gnome terminal program' window where I am running emacs.
$ ps aux | grep terminal
t 4593 0.0 0.5 682764 44864 ? Sl Mar27 3:37 gnome-terminal

Hm interesting...

1:19 AM
@TheX does it by default iirc

ping -f

Tim
I have some programs' windows back but some not

Then -I to change the interval?

Can do cool stuff too. My work desktop pings a system at work hourly to see if it is up :p

Erg autocorrect... "-i"

Tim
1:22 AM
can I bring the window of gnome terminal back, given that its pid is 4593?

What happen if you try to bring compiz back now?

Is it possible to install a .ISO file onto a partition of a USB Flash Drive?

Tim
@Mateo: without stopping or killing metacity? do "compiz --displace :0 --replace & disown" in a gnome terminal or a console (by ctrl-alt-f1)?
$ compiz (core) - Warn: Unknown option '--displace'

compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Starting plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: :0
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to load plugin: :0
The above is run in a gnome terminal while under metacity. After running it, I am still in metacity not in compiz.

spell check
Replace/displace

Tim
$ compiz --display :0 --replace & disown
[1] 9086
compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Starting plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Stopping plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Unloading plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: ccp
compiz (core) - Info: Starting plugin: ccp
compizconfig - Info: Backend : ini
compizconfig - Info: Integration : true
compizconfig - Info: Profile : default
The above is run in a gnome terminal under metacity. Now the windows lose their menu's and toolbars
I am still in metacity, not in compiz

1:39 AM
no that was replaced if the window bars ate gone
Did your terminal you use come back?
Otherwise I think I'm out of ideas

Tim
do you mean metacity is replaced with compiz? From the look, it seems that I am still in metacity, and the "Application" menu is gone after I run compiz.

Where can I get help with a minecraft server?

Tim
The window of the gnome terminal I run previously in compiz is not back.
does unity run in metacity? What desktop environment runs in metacity?

unity uses compiz, it is just is a plug in for it
which makes it hard when this happens because all the working parts go down at once

Anyone wanna help me test my answer here?

A: How can I get a notification using Notify-OSD when the charger is inserted/removed?

SethWith a little experimentation (and a little help) I found a slightly better way than I originally intended by using a udev rule. Create a script with the following contents: #!/bin/bash if [ "$POWER" == "on" ] then DISPLAY=:0 /bin/su USER -c '/usr/bin/notify-send "Power cable plugged in....

Spent all my free time for the day so far on it xD

1:47 AM
@Seth oh, that sounds fun

It was :D

I'm going to add icons ;)

2:07 AM

Nice!

I thought about that but I couldn't remember if notify-send supported them and I was too lazy to check :P
Are those stock?

yeah, in the gnome theme folder

sweet!

Tim
2:09 AM
I have rebooted. @Mateo

#!/bin/bash
if [ "$POWER" == "on" ]
  then
  DISPLAY=:0 /bin/su mateo -c '/usr/bin/notify-send -i /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/devices/ac-adapter.png "Power cable plugged in."'
elif [ "$POWER" == "off" ]
  then
  DISPLAY=:0 /bin/su mateo -c '/usr/bin/notify-send -i /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/status/battery-full.png "Power cable unplugged."'
fi

That's a great idea @Mateo.

Tim
what DE runs in metacity?

Mind if I borrow it? :)

go ahead @Seth
@Tim gnome-classic

Tim
2:10 AM
gnome2 not gnome3?

well... that is a long story
or was it called gnome-fallback... I don't remember.

Tim
if gnome-classic is gnome2, is it already stopped delevoping?

Hi everyone,
who knows about enlightenment?

Tim
Is it worth to switch from compiz to metacity?

@xiaodongjie I'll have one with everything ;P
oh, bad hotdog joke...

Tim
2:12 AM
Is compiz (with unity) much more buggy than metacity (with gnome-classic)?

happy 1st!

@Mateo which company is enlightenment 17's back?
Deepin? or
any Other?

@xiaodongjie that is a good question

yes
Do you know?

samgsung?
@Seth I better star that so I can remove them once they get annoying :) but for now I really like - upvote for you

2:16 AM
@Mateo Thank you very much.
Now I got correct information i want. Best thanks.

but looks like a small team, that gets funding here and there

yes, I think so.
And enlightenment is very fast, but it has many bugs.
anyway, it's a great idea.

Tim
2:41 AM
Is Enlightment less buggy than unity and compiz?

Q: Is it possible to access opened gnome terminal session in text console?

TimI am running Ubuntu 14.04. My desktop environment (compiz and unity) sometimes becomes frozen, which makes it difficult to save my work including text editing in emacs running in gnome terminal. After I switch to a text console by ctrl-alt-F1, I know I can't access the running programs with GUI....

2:51 AM
@Mateo Thanks :)

3:30 AM
@Lucio and @Seth: it's not quite there yet, but here's this.
Soon it will be able to host the FlackBot JavaScript. It's just not quite there yet.

3:43 AM
I have an idea for the new logo too:
And there's this:

Do they? Ugh. IMO this whole april fools thing turned ugly.
backfires are funny. Did you hear @Nathan how SE didn't think through the networking side of the game well enough and DDoSed themselves with all the traffic it used?

Yeah, I saw that.
One of the answers on the Meta question hit the nail on the head. Users should only be able to participate on one site.
That would solve almost all of the problems.

Q: Cant find emails retrieved by fetchmail

user1078020So I set up fetchmail to retrieve emails from with IMAP from a remote mail server, I was able to run it. How can I know that it found any emails or not since I did send test emails to the account being polled and havent read them so that they can be detected by fetchmail. Another issue is that I ...

user136984
Oh dear... Now I've successfully built my project, created my .dsc and my .changes file and signed them both, but now I am unsure of how to upload them to my PPA which has no other packages on it... Do I just upload the .changes file like it says? Because I read somewhere that I should start with the .orig file if it is the first upload of the package. Also the PPA is of a launchpad 'team' so I'm not sure if just anybody can upload stuff there.

user136984
So I'm also not sure about how I would verify if that is the case that it is me uploading the package so it would allow me.

user136984
@NathanOsman: Sorry to bother you again, but would you know? :)

format to upload is dput ppa:name/project nameofpackage.changes

@Toroidal Try pushing it to +junk first if you don't have team access

user136984
11:54 AM
@fossfreedom Yes, I know, but if that is the first time that I have ever uploaded anything to that PPA, is it only the .changes file that I upload?

yep
dput will then upload all associated files

user136984
@fossfreedom Oh, ok, and so how do I upload it then to a team PPA?

what's the web link?

user136984
@fossfreedom Web link?

where on launchpad is the team project?

user136984
12:00 PM
@fossfreedom Well, I've only got the team and PPA, I do not know this 'project' that you talk about. Sorry for my ignorance, I have never done this before.

user136984
Do you just mean the PPA for my team?

user136984
Or my team?

^^^ both

user136984
@fossfreedom Ooops, didn't mean to remove it, but did you get them? :)

user136984
Or should I post again?

12:04 PM
you should see a section on the PPA page entitled "Uploading packages to this PPA" - what does it say?

user136984
@fossfreedom It says to just use that command. It also talks about config files with FTP etc...: help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/Uploading

user136984
Ah, now I see, it says to edit this file: ~/.dput.cf

user136984
And put this sort of thing:

user136984
[my-ppa]
fqdn = ppa.launchpad.net
method = ftp
incoming = ~<your_launchpad_id>/<ppa_name>/ubuntu/
login = anonymous
allow_unsigned_uploads = 0

user136984
But I'm still a bit confused with that... :(

12:07 PM
hmm - I've never ever done that - I have lots of PPAs ... I've only every done "dput etc"

user136984
It says:

user136984
Change the first line to whatever name you want to use to refer to your PPA, while retaining the square brackets. Do not use just "ppa" as the name here: that conflicts with an entry in /etc/dput.cf and will cause confusing failures (Could not find person or team named ''.).

If you're uploading to a team PPA, change the ~<your-launchpad-id> to your team's Launchpad name (maintaining the tilde). As you might expect, you must be a member of the team before you can upload to its PPA.

Set the correct <ppa-name>, the default PPA name is ppa, use the specific name for other PPA in the same cont

user136984
@fossfreedom So do I replace the first line with the name of my PPA in the square brackets, or without them?

user136984
And how do I prove to it who I am? I can't just login with my username, so how will the PPA know it is me?

user136984
Or does it not work like that...?

12:10 PM
all very good questions ... and this isnt something I have ever done :( sorry about that. Would be a good question on the main site though.

user136984
Oh wait, I'm just being stupid there, it says to put the text in the square brackets! :D But still confused about the rest...

user136984
@fossfreedom Ok, I will try some stuff out and if still stuck will ask on the main site. :)

user136984
Thanks for all your help anyway! :)

So it begins...

until I go to work for the first time in 2.5 weeks

@TheX Nope. I am not. :)

@RPiAwesomeness me neither, gotta go.

@Toroidal Change the first line to whatever name you want to use to refer to your PPA, while retaining the square brackets

@Seth lol, oh no :D
@terdon Nooooo. Don't adult!

?

12:25 PM
@NathanOsman I take this is Google's April Fools....

user136984
@terdon Ok, I am now trying to upload the package to my PPA after filling out all that info, but I am just getting an email saying it was rejected.

user136984
How do I get it to see that I am a member of the team and can upload?

@terdon He has to back to adulting today. Didn't have to work for 2 weeks.

Back to adulting?

@terdon Indeed

12:26 PM
@Toroidal No idea. Presumably you have a username/password

user136984
Yes, but where do I input them? I am logged in on launchpad, but how do I tell dput my username and password?

Dunno, never tried it.

@NathanOsman lol. Love your Twitter post xD

user136984
6:01 PM
@NathanOsman By the way, do you know once you have got a PPA with your packages how you would set up a bug tracking system?

Do you have a project page on Launchpad?

user136984
@NathanOsman Yes, I've been battling with it for over an hour now and still got nowhere...

What's the project URL?

user136984
I will check...

user136984
I seem to have done something odd to it...

6:04 PM

Oh, hang on. fixed a typo

user136984
Strange, my links keep on removing themselves!

user136984
:D

user136984
@NathanOsman Oh, that seems to be already set up, but how do I link my PPA?

PPAs aren't linked to projects.

user136984
Oh, so how does it work then?

user136984
6:07 PM
Because I just want a system like a PPA where I can release my code, and a project or something so that I can have a bug tracker.

user136984
How do projects work then?

The bug tracker belongs to the project.
The PPA can contain packages for multiple projects.

user136984
@NathanOsman So how exactly do I release my code then?

user136984
Sorry, getting very confused by all this.

Don't feel bad.
The Debian packing ecosystem is quite complex at first.
Your code should be committed to Bazaar branches in the project.

user136984
6:14 PM
@NathanOsman Yes, I had a look at that, but it told me that instead of doing that that I should just link my Git repository so I did, and then it started branching and I ended up with loads of branches all over the place, and the ones with the right names did not want to actually import the code, but the rest did, so I ended deleting most of them and now I have just been left very confused. I even tried setting up Bazaar on my machine, but that didn't go so well... :(

Well, it's not a requirement, so...

user136984
@NathanOsman So how do I then allow people to install my package?

Just point them to the PPA and they should know what to do.

user136984
@NathanOsman Sorry, how do I point then to my PPA? Also, it seems to have deleted my PPA when I was attempting to tell it of its existence... :( Well, I don't know if my PPA was removed because the packages there are still showing in my related packages thing on my page, but I can't access the PPA anyway...

What's your username on Launchpad?

user136984
6:20 PM
@NathanOsman Is that the thing in the URL? Or my display name?

No, the thing after the '~' in the URL.
I don't see a PPA on your account, I'm afraid...

user136984
I think that it was probably part of the team that I am registered to.

user136984
Which should be this: launchpad.net/~secretiveppc

Ah.
They don't have a PPA either.

user136984

Q: Is it possible to tell `scp` to terminate connection not wait for the user input in case if the host is not known yet?

zerkms$ scp -i /identity/file from u@host:/to/ The authenticity of host 'host (1.2.3.4)' can't be established. ECDSA key fingerprint is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? Then it blocks waiting for the user input. The question is...

@NathanOsman: I have set up my PPA now again and have uploaded the packages there and they say that they are now 'building', so how exactly do I direct people to my PPA on my project page? :)

This is what you give them:
ppa:secretiveppc/anti-sr

@RPiAwesomeness That's just what they want you to think ;)

Should unity be removed once gnome-shell is installed?

If you installed vanilla ubuntu then the answer is no.

DANGIT INTERNET CONNECTION!!!
@Seth I checked it out and it actually worked...sorta.
@NathanOsman What's the drama going on?

PPCG is getting hit with restart bots and they are upset.

crl
@Seth ok thanks

@NathanOsman Oh boo :(

7:01 PM
@NathanOsman And where exactly do I give that to them? I mean where on the project page? Because I still get lost on my project page and end up doing very strange stuff to it and creating lots of unwanted branches linking to random things, and then it just saves those changes and then I have to spend loads of time finding out what it did and how to undo it... So do I just put it in the description or something? And if so, which description as there are a few...?

Seeing as the PPCG people seemed to have started the trolling.. I guess all I can say is what goes around comes around? — ɥʇǝS 17 hours ago

@RPiAwesomeness Anime & Manga have passed them on the leaderboard and seem to be running their own bots.
@Seth Yes, it does sound a bit hypocritical.

@NathanOsman o.O sooo... Code Golf is being hit by bots? Or they're using bots?

Who really knows. Maybe both.

This is why I gave up on the whole StackEgg thing within an hour of playing with it.

7:03 PM
@Seth ik. I liked last years better.

Actually, it's still fun if you find a site near the bottom that nobody is playing and do it solo :P

It was more better.

I helped RPi.SE hatch their egg.

And time consuming. Good gracious.
@NathanOsman I tried. But school happened :P
Oh yeah. And squids, given the right trajectory, can now float.
SkyDoesMinecraft's penultimate nightmare has come true

On Chrome I could search directly on the address bar typing the beginning of a site then tab, then the search (worked with Google translate, etc..), does this work on Firefox?

Odd, 3 branches that I didn't create... :(

user136984
And they don't want to go! :D

user136984
@NathanOsman: Ok, well I decided to put it in all the descriptions... Is there anywhere else that I would need to put it (ppa:secretiveppc/anti-sr) to direct people? :)

That's it.

user136984
Ok, well I hope that the damn thing actually installs now (the software)! :D :P

user136984
It's bean messing me around all day!

user136984
7:09 PM
I'm even starting to write the word "bean" instead of "been" in places with all the stress it's given me! :D :P

user136984
Which is true, as I didn't actually mean to write "bean" above... :P

user136984
@NathanOsman Oh, and by the way, thanks for all your help! :)

No problem.

Erm... I need some free space on my tiny 60GB HDD. Can I remove old "linux-image-xxxx-generic" "linux-image-extra-xxxx-generic" "linux-headers-xxxx-generic" and "linux-headers-xxxx" packages?

@ByteCommander Yeah, just so long as you don't (obviously) remove the current ones and don't want to down-grade in the future.

7:23 PM
I would keep the last two versions.
3.16.0-29 and -33
So I have to apt-get purge each package or is there something to fasten this up?

user136984
Oh dear, more problems! :D

Q: Build failed LaunchPad "Dependency wait on lgw01-31"

ToroidalI have got a PPA on LaunchPad and a pack which depends on gawk (>= 1:4.1.1+dfsg-1) (this is set in the control file). But when uploading the .change file to LaunchPad with dput I get this error: So why is the build failing when it doesn't for any of my other packages of this project? And how c...

@ByteCommander Try installing Ubuntu Tweak and using the Janitor feature

@RPiAwesomeness I need more free space, not more programs... :-/

@ByteCommander Yeah, but it's fairly small. Plus, it's safer and really useful.

7:26 PM
okay...

Less than 4kb

482113 files and directories installed --> wow.
@RPiAwesomeness Ubuntu-tweak seems not to work with XFCE. It tells me dbus not found.

@ByteCommander Oh. Well then.

Think positive: I found another package I can uninstall...

7:33 PM
@RPiAwesomeness You know the regex to purge all versions starting with 2 (e.g. 24 25 28 29) and keeps 33 and 34?

I have no idea

linux-headers-3.16.0-2* ignores the 2 and also wants to purge the 3x versions...
@NathanOsman you know the correct regex for this ^?

'*' in a regular expression means "zero or more of the previous entity" which in this case is the digit "2".
And "3" matches that requirement.

So what do I need to purge all 2x versions with apt-get and keep the 3x versions?

"2.*" will match anything that starts with a "2".
(The "." means any character, therefore ".*" means zero or more of any character".)

7:39 PM
Okay - I think I will have to download a book on this some time...
But thanks, this does the job! :)

How far did you get with sudoku btw?

Haven't been able to get at it again. Probably won't have time until the weekend.

Me too. I would have time, but the motivation seems to be gone most time...
I was so looking forward to do this when I had to prepare for my exams, but now I don't feel like doing it anymore so much...

Q: Mysql exited with status 1 and restarted every 24 hours? How to debug?

NeverStopLearningAfter upgrade, MySQL on Ubuntu 14.04 keeps crashing and is restarted every 24 hours according to the dmesg. I would expect to some reason for the failure in MySQL logs, but all are empty. Any ideas how to debug this? [32973.265291] init: mysql main process (944) terminated with status 1 [32973.2...

Oh nooo... >.< This apt-get purge is rebuilding initramfs and does update-grub after each removed package. Ugh...
Hmm... The autoremove also killed the 33er version - not what I wanted, but ok. I hope the 34er will not crash then!
