9:01 PM
5 more days until golden Fanatic badge and 38 more rep until 3k... sigh Want have NOW! ;)

@hbdgaf Just let it be shown for those who want it shown.

Look right above where I pinged you. The two of you seem to disagree on that point.

@ByteCommander Holy crap dude. You repped up fast. I'm only just now at 132 from 3k.

@TheX totally new thing, you use it for things like embedded devices, you cant use apt-get on it, so they made it to use read only images like on the phone, and do "transactional" updates on the system
aka, it has two system partitions that it when it installs the new on it switches between them, and you can revert

@RPiAwesomeness I caught up with you? Nice! :-D I told you I would do...

9:06 PM
and packages are "snaps" and those are completely sandboxed

Did not even realize...

@ByteCommander I didn't doubt you would. I'm just on the site, it's not my life goal to get crazy rep ;)

@RPiAwesomeness ^^ it's about time and effort

so think of a use case for embedded devices that don't have any gui - and you only acess it through a web interface @TheX

9:07 PM
I like the concept of snappy core, but I don't have anything I really want to do with it atm.

@RPiAwesomeness Of course it's not a "life goal", but it's a hobby. And more fun than learning for the History exam I write tomorrow... >:P Oh. Sh#t!

and so far this looks like one of the coolest uses: ninjablocks.com/ninjasphere/developer
that and the drone...

Someone could clone the Nest learning thermostat with a raspi and a driver/relay board.

But... Who cares about History? I'll read through the book once before going to sleep, that is usually enough.

@ByteCommander :P

@Mateo I saw the coolest drone video the other day. It was a rotating sphere/square sort of visual show of hive-mind drones.

yeah, and you always hear about certain NAS devices with an obscure linux installed that still would be vulnerable to heartblead and stuff

All I could think of was a guy on a hovering platform in the middle of that video.
@Mateo Yeah, cloning existing devices with open hardware and software should totally be a thing.

would be cool if they made the drone also do bluecasting, or other interesting combinations of hardware/software - flying access point that would get the best 3g/4g then be a wifi access point for you
like holding your phone in the air, but way better...

That would be pretty awesome, but the drone would need suction cups or hooks or something, so it could attach to things instead of just landing.

9:18 PM
@Seth I would propose to make a synonym of .
2

@Mateo I see......

@TheX so here is the best "desktop" ubuntu for pi2 so far: ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-15-04-for-raspberry-pi-2/…

@Mateo That's a cool idea. Wouldn't really work for making phone calls though: "Can you bring the mike closer to your mouth, it sounds like you're 100 meters away!"

@terdon no, I mean just fly the drone up - it would have connected 3g/4g - then just send you the data over wifi

@Mateo Yeah, and that's a great idea. I was just thinking how that would be helpful to get a phone signal as well but, well...

9:22 PM
Well it is almost time for me to pack up and go home...

If you're going over 3g/4g you could just skype.

well, they say buildings and stuff affect your signal, sometimes going outside around here helps - so an extra 50ft in the air might clear some things with direct line of sight to you on the ground for the wifi
or have it fly the rounds on camera trap devices - collect data then come back
without having to walk to them

Don't understand "trap devices"...

A camera trap is a remotely activated camera that is equipped with a motion sensor or an infrared sensor, or uses a light beam as a trigger. Camera trapping is a method for capturing wild animals on film when researchers are not present, and has been used in ecological research for decades. In addition to applications in hunting and wildlife viewing, research applications include studies of nest ecology, detection of rare species, estimation of population size and species richness, as well as research on habitat use and occupation of human-built structures. Camera traps, also known as trail cameras...
like for animal studies

But then I even less understand what you wanted to tell... :P

9:29 PM
the normally set them up, then later come back pick up the sd cards for the pictures
I'm saying leave them there, fly a drone over - wireless send some data

@Mateo SO then you could also add a mobile to the device and send it via UMTS or something like that...
No need to fly a drone.

@terdon: Hi

@Mateo its also good for snapchatting

@ByteCommander just saying you only have so much power over solar power, and buying data plans for a bunch of cameras that might not get signal in the middle of the wilderness... it could work for some situations

and freeze motion security

9:34 PM
What are we talking about?

@Mateo Could... But I still think flying a drone (which also has to get a signal!) is too complicated.

I was looking at this at one point: dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision
It lets you set waypoints and it will fly to them automatically.

@NathanOsman That's legal in Canada?

I'm in Canada :P
> "Wi-Fi wireless connection up to a distance of 300m"

@NathanOsman yeah, exactly it would just fly to points on it's own

9:36 PM
Sorry!

Q: Backbox Update jacks up Ruby / Gems

ShadesIf you are like me, you updated your backbox ISO as soon as you installed... and then were met with errors. If you haven't updated... do this first. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ruby2.1 ruby2.1-dev sudo apt-get update sudo mv /usr/bin/ruby /usr/bin/ruby.bak sudo ln /usr/bin/ruby2.1 r...

In Germany, a drone might not fly out of sight, afaik.

> "Program a flight path using your smartphone with our 16 waypoint Ground Station system. Tilt the camera up and down, take photos and shoot video all while the Phantom 2 Vision+ flies autonomously."

At least over civil areas.

Just don't fly it near an airport :P

9:38 PM
sure, that is why I started talking about the wilderness first ;P

Wow... it has an ascent speed of 6m/s and flight speed of 15m/s.

Nice.

@heemayl o/

Going off for bed and a boring History book now... :P
See you and good night! o/

@terdon: are you familiar withe term "guru" ?

9:45 PM
Yes
That guy, for example.

Nooooooo
although kind of
lol

:)

I am from BD..here "guru" means "someone you respect and learn things from"
:)
btw where did you got the pic?
from net or from your disk?
lol

Net
And yes, that's basically what it means in English as well.

i am honored to say that you are my "guru"
actually the very little things i have learned till now, it all started having close look at your answers..
i was meaning to say this for a while but did not get chance somehow..

9:50 PM
@heemayl The honor is all mine. You should learn from people like Stephane and Gilles on U&L though. Compared to them, I'm just a beginner.
I've learned an enormous amount about scripting and *nix since I started hanging out on U&L.

i was not feeling Ok without sharing this with you..
now i am FREE
:D

@heemayl Well, thanks :)

yeah..they are too good....
but i like the field what you are specialized at..
on a lighter note, i want to hear some of your work
i mean Guitar
:)

Oh. I don't have much stuff online I'm afraid. You can find some old stuff here: myspace.com/lospesadosdelafiesta/music/songs

Be right back..
lets hear it first
:)

10:01 PM
@terdon I'm convinced Gilles is a machine masquerading as a human.

@hbdgaf We all are. He keeps denying it but he would.
in Unix and Linux, Jun 5 '14 at 16:45, by terdon
The way I see it, Stephane is some kind of mythical, magical creature, Gilles is a wizard and slm is a human paladin.

MySpace? The early 2000s called and they want their flashing animated GIFs and awful color matchups back.

@NathanOsman I said it was old stuff :)

@terdon: Wow..those are some works....

10:03 PM
@NathanOsman And why did you go and remind me of scrolling marquees?
@heemayl Thanks :)

awesome work.. i must say..

@terdon Please no...

@NathanOsman Ugh, I remember thinking they were cool.

We all thought they were cool at the time.

@terdon btw do you always play acoustics?

10:04 PM
@NathanOsman Every time someone puts a scrolling marquee on the internet god kills a kitten.

@NathanOsman Ah, the naiveté of youth.
@heemayl No, I'm playing electric on Summertime.

Remember <blink>?

I think we've had this conversation before... or it's deja vu and I really am in the matrix.

@NathanOsman Unfortunately.
@hbdgaf Yeah, deja vu all over again.

@hbdgaf It sounds vaguely familiar to me too.
Interesting - since I was digging through some old files today. Really old files. Like from floppy disks. And I found what would have been the first HTML files I put together.

10:06 PM
the first ones i put together were LOADED with iframes. it was death by navigation.
sadly, i really did think it was a good idea at the time.

Yeah, we live and learn.

They were good ideas at the time. Frames were cool and let us have menus on the side. No other way to do that back then.

@terdon: i am sure i gonna listen to those for quite some time..anyway..see ya

@NathanOsman myspace? never had that - I was using geocities way back when

@heemayl Glad you like them :)

10:08 PM
O_o

and made my text bounce back and forth instead of marquee

@Mateo I didn't either. I didn't even have an email address until around 2007.

Ooh, yes, there's another blast from the past. What was the other one? Something with a t.

angelfire was the other big one.

^--- this

10:09 PM
I'm looking for an other one. Tip of my tongue.
t...t....t-something.

my bbs might have at a t in the dial code - badump tsss
There's a tshirt in there somewhere... like a throwback thursdays shirt. "I hosted all my 2MB websites on angelfire" or similar.
o/ @DemCodeLines - "Apparently, this user prefers to keep an air of mystery about them." nice profile ;)

@hbdgaf Where does it say that?!

10:25 PM

Is this the chat SO, or main SO?

SO main

That's funny. It doesn't show that for me.
Mind giving me the link to that page?

You'll see the same if you log out then view your own profile. It's because I'm not you. Viewing yourself is different than others viewing you with the new profile pages.

I wonder how it says that.
I don't remember putting that. It's still funny ;)

10:29 PM
If profile description == empty then render that.
I suppose the real compliment is directed at the guys that designed the new profile pages.

jrg
10:46 PM
Oli is no longer green!

wut?
omg he's blue
commence Armageddon

11:06 PM
Maybe he's looking for love instead of money?

@jrg he was red the other day

or was mad and cooled off ;)

jrg
He keeps changing! This is bad. Is his gravatar hacked?

I'ld tend to think it's like a mood ring he places colors on... but that's me.

would be cool if he scripted a color change or something

11:10 PM
Not what I would have done, but still neat.

what up tho!!!!!

jrg
@NathanOsman don't you have a blink(1)?

Nope. I have something similar though.

jrg
What do you have?

Who knows - it may even use the same kernel module (usbled).
That brings back memories of me writing my own kernel module for it.

11:13 PM
Ahhh, they have a BRB

jrg
@NathanOsman for the envelope, didn't you have to a kernel module to make it work on linux?

No - kernels from all popular distros ship with the usbled module, which it uses.

jrg
ah. ok.

I did write my own though before realizing that.
I implemented access to the LEDs in a slightly different manner.
All of that being said - if you want a really easy way to use it with the normal kernel module, I wrote a Python library.
It lets you do things like:
device.color = 'red'
...and...
device.pulse('green', count=2, interval=0.5)

ooo, the coffee question is almost back
