@terdon Can you review this answer for me? It's been a while since I've read about and/or used some of these functions so I just want to make sure I got it all right.

12:38 AM
mmm. Home made bread. Nothing beats it.

Agreed

@seth Hey LOL

12:54 AM
Hi @JasperLoy!

@Seth I am looking forward to installing Debian 8 on Apr 25!

@JasperLoy Cool! But what about Ubuntu MATE?

is going all fedora these days ._.

@Seth I am still on Ubuntu MATE 1404, but I am hoping Debian 8 will have a MATE live DVD. If not it would be hard to install MATE on it.

@JasperLoy I think you could.
There is Linux Mint Debian edition which I'm sure supports MATE.

12:58 AM
@Seth I don't like the idea of rolling.
@Seth At first I thought it was not rolling but it seems it is rolling.

LMDE is rolling?
I did not know that.

Well, I read the release notes and it seems so, maybe semirolling.
@Seth If Deb 8 doesn't have MATE live DVD, I might return to GNOME.

I don't like GNOME ;P
@JourneymanGeek D:

@Seth What you use then?
@JourneymanGeek Fedora sucks.

@JasperLoy Why?

1:05 AM
Works for me ;p

@NathanOsman Yum sucks.
@NathanOsman Yum lacks a global autoremove that apt-get has.

But it has delta updates.
That's a huge plus for me.

That's not impt to me. The mirrors are slow anyway.

@JasperLoy Unity ;P
I've had 1 day with yum. Not a huge fan.

I've always run KDE.

1:11 AM
@Seth It is not yummy.
@JourneymanGeek Too slow.

One thing I liked though was that it updated the package lists every operation.

@Seth you're not spending all day on it thi
And heh. That annoys me, especially at work :p

Anyway, bye.

@JourneymanGeek Yes, I can see where it might get annoying, but it also has benefits. No more errors about packages not found because your package lists are outdated, for one.

Q: Elementary OS shows WiFi networks, but won't connect

Connor ElseaIn the top bar, clicking the network icon shows a list of networks. My school's network, which on Windows I would connect to, and then visit a login page in Chrome in order for it to work, shows on the list. When I click to connect it shows it connecting, and then says that I am not connected to...

Windows 10 ftw!

@TheX Did they redo some of the icons?
I must not be running the latest build anymore...

@NathanOsman yeah I think they did

There's no way I have the bandwidth to download another ISO.
Hopefully it's available via Windows Update.

3:47 AM
they should be.

@NathanOsman it is, but it is still a pretty hefty download

@NathanOsman Windows update pretty much just downloads the build and unpacks the C:\Windows part (or so it seems).

4:20 AM
Lol
Introducing the USB cable necklace. Because #fashion, lol. http://t.co/niYWwgXeSF
So, you are going to make me find my silver USB extender @NathanOsman

I don't think I've ever seen that.

A USB cable will have never looked better ;p
And it will match my shades, either that or I have an orange FireWire cable

@Fabby: I was wondering if you would know what I should do about this, my AV turned this up yesterday: /usr/share/mime/mime.cache: PUA.Win.Exploit.CVE_2012_0110 FOUND

user136984
What is it and what should I do about it because it doesn't look good?

user136984
8:46 AM
Well, I seem to have found out that it is some sort of exploit to do with Java: oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpujan2012-366304.html

@NathanOsman there we go, complete with MIB quote ;)

Oh dear... A question asking how to do illegal activities here...

user136984
Naughty naughty...

9:52 AM
@Seth Your answer is fine, the OP's script has problems. 1) The firefoxGeditOpen=ps -d | grep -ic -e firefox -e gedit will just set firefoxGeditOpen to the string ps and give an error message about -d command not found. The OP forgot to enclose the ps command in $().
2) Even if it had been done correctly, grepping the output of ps for a command fails since the grep itself will also be counted:

user136984
So does nobody have any idea then about this "/usr/share/mime/mime.cache: PUA.Win.Exploit.CVE_2012_0110 FOUND" thing found on my machine?

Oh, scratch 2, the -d fixes that.

@terdon It seems that a lot of people have been noticing that: here. But I think that it must be a bug because you can still enter your date of birth, but as it is optional to enter it, it is unlikely that the site is just checking if you are of the right age.

HelioWhat happens if I think that my answer is more valid than the accepted one? I don't know if this is my perception, or, effectively, my answer is better. What should I do?

11:43 AM
@Fabby how do comments get incorporated in posts

@MuditKapil What do you mean?

user136984
If suddenly all of my rep points were taken from me, would my privileges also get taken away from me?

yup
A suspension would do both, temporarily
Say of you had a spate of generosity and gave away all the reps, same effect

Oli
@Toroidal Yeah, you'd also probably be suspended (that's the most likely case - you can only give 1500 rep away every couple of days)

user136984
Maybe SE should turn rep points into a sort of currency too... :D

11:56 AM
@Toroidal No. Then Jon Skeet would rule the world
Question, do you guys know what the best method for removing a program installed via an ./install.sh script would be? From looking at said install script, it seems like it just is copying the binaries and support files, so it would be fairly simple to just to delete those files. However, it seems to make a call to update-desktop-database. Not sure how to undo that part.

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness :D :D :D

@Toroidal ;)

user136984
@Oli I've never been suspended before, what is it like?

user136984
And do many people get suspended?

@RPiAwesomeness This is just a guess but if it run this update-desktop-database (whatever that is) with no arguments, then running it again after deleting the installed files will probably remove whatever was added.

Oli
12:00 PM
@Toroidal I've never been on that side of a suspension but it resets your visible reputation down to 1 and I believe the only thing you can do is interact with the suspension message (which we have to send when we suspend somebody)

Also, some source tarballs include an uninstall file so you could try make uninstall.

user136984
@Oli Oh, so you actually have to write a custom message? Or is there a template?

@Toroidal Wanna give it a go? :P

Oli
@Toroidal There are templates but I usually write my own or heavily edit.

user136984
@terdon If it can be for 1 minute, then yeah sure, new experiences are good (if you can return from them)! ;D :P

12:02 PM
Yeah, the templates are more like guidelines about what the message should contain. They very rarely fit the situation exactly.

@terdon That would make sense.

user136984
@Oli Ok, so how often is someone suspended?

user136984
I can't imagine that you would have to suspended people a lot of the time as then all your time would be wasted writing messages of suspension! :D :P

user136984
@terdon What is the minimum time for a suspension to last?

Oli
@Toroidal A couple a month on a busy month. No idea exactly. Most of them are semi-automatic to work out why somebody is —for example— deleting a lot of their posts and are quickly reversed once we know what they're doing (or talk them down).
@Toroidal I don't think there is a minimum. They're done in "days" but a moderator can reverse one.

12:05 PM
@Toroidal one day
But yes, they can always be reversed.

I've been chat-banned twice (both mod's faults,) but never suspended...

user136984
@Oli @terdon: Can moderators view if the user has had previous suspensions?

Oli
@Toroidal Yeah

And no, I'd rather not try it out thank you :)

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness Why did they chat-ban you?

user136984
12:07 PM
And can you view what is being said in the chat during the 'chat-ban'?

Oli
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah chat suspensions are a little more automatic. They can come around via flags confirmed by 10k users.

@Toroidal First time, I had posted a link to some spam on the site while we were having a spam wave and someone flagged it without thinking and then others accepted the flag without thinking or looking at context.
Second time, it was a total mistake. A mod was going for someone else and got me instead :P

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness How and what for? :D

user136984
So am I just lucky then not to have had any problems on this site with its moderation? Or are you just unlucky? :D :P

Oli
@Toroidal The site (Ask Ubuntu) and chat moderation are run by different people. If you flag a message in chat, every 10k user and every moderator from every site sees it pop up and they can vote on it... On the site, only the moderators and SE staff can suspend you.

12:16 PM

user136984
@terdon Come on, I can't help what my browser does behind my back! :D :P Funnily enough though, Skype also spams my contacts with repeated messages and images... It could have something though to do with that backdoor that I found in my machine yesterday...

user136984
Well, I'm not really sure if it's a backdoor or what it is, but some sort of Java exploit in my system...

user136984
2:30 PM
@terdon: Actually, thinking about that, could you remove the majority of the pugs please as they are really blocking up the chat... :D

@Toroidal Um, why don't you? Are they too old to delete?

user136984
@terdon Yep, too old.

Depugging complete. Now, don't start with French bulldogs!

@Fabby Hi! Well, it was worth a shot.

@Seth @jrg
As both of you are the mods to be most likely to come on-line soonest, I've marked [this post](http://askubuntu.com/questions/610544/how-to-install-proshow-program-on-ubuntu-14) as spam for the following reasons (all red flags):
1/ New user
2/ Asking a question about a Windows product on AU (carefully disguised as a "replacement question")
3/ a girl
4/ whose avatar is *way too cute*
5/ Payable
6/ Their blog goes way back in time, but according to archive.org, the site has only been live for 2 weeks. (https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.proshowblog.com)
@ByteCommander Thanks anyway! (and sorry for not replying earlier, but I was writing above rant)

@Fabby no problem! :)
I had somebody else to talk...

Have you seen any mods active in the last couple of hours?
@Seth @jrg And this one is link-bait IMHO.

7:00 PM
@Fabby meh, not enough to jump to that conclusion imo - 1 - no self answer for windows - 2 - no links 3 - I see information about that program going way back, even a question on if it would work on 6.10

user136984
Well, this has been a good day for me in terms of my rep points as I have not been getting that many in the last few days, but today I got 85 and got from 2,618 to 2,703! :)

@Fabby so all you have left is "a new cute girl wants to run a slideshow program which she paid for"

@Fabby I would also think that this times your gut feeling overreacted... You should get yourself some dessert to calm it down probably ;)

7:28 PM
@ByteCommander Yes, but with what program? I tried gedit but that just crashed...

user136984
Also, the file is possibly some sort of malicious exploit...

@Toroidal Huh? Gedit is not supposed to crash...
What file size is it?

user136984
@ByteCommander 120.8 kB

And what does the file /path/to/file say about it?

@ByteCommander That's an old question that had a problem that went away all by itself, and only recently did someone spot it...
So: close!

7:29 PM
@Fabby ok. Thanks! :)

user136984
@ByteCommander What, the file path?

@Fabby still a stretch - with that logic I would l would also flag questions like this: askubuntu.com/questions/355273/how-do-i-install-0-a-d
because link bait ;P

user136984
@ByteCommander: The file path is: /usr/share/mime/mime.cache

user136984
It was detected by ClamAV to be: PUA.Win.Exploit.CVE_2012_0110

Run "file /usr/share/mime/mime.cache" !

user136984
7:31 PM
And I have no idea what that is, other than possibly some sort of Java exploit...

user136984
Right...

So what does it tell about the content?

user136984
@ByteCommander /usr/share/mime/mime.cache: PFM data - W\260

Nah! That's information sharing! Small question, detailed answer... :P :P :P
But I get your point: where do we stop??? Let's wait for a mod to untie the Gordian knot!
Huh? @Oli in blue now?
You OK??? Got the blues?

@Fabby Oli is purple for me!!??

user136984

@Fabby: Blue? But he's purple...

Or more exactly: baby unicorn pink.

I did a refresh
Now he's gone...

> "Let's wait for a mod to untie the Gordian knot!"
+5 culture points

user136984
@ByteCommander: Anyway, about that file... Any idea on how I can tell the contents? Or what it actually is would be nice...

Bytecode.

I think @Oli has installed Utopic Unicorn and he's farting rainbow-coloured avatars...

user136984
@ByteCommander What should I google though? I have been looking up this sort of thing all day, and nothing...

Not meant to be read by little curious Toroidals... ;)
The output of "file"-command maybe? And the full path?
Diner break! BRB

@Toroidal lemme look at the file sig.

@Toroidal 65

7:39 PM
@Mateo What? 65?

user136984
@Fabby When you say the file sig, do you mean something that I have already provided, or do I need to provide something?

@Toroidal Nothing that I can find

@Toroidal You've already unwittingly provided what I needed! :D ;-)

when converting string to -> something else -> to octal
:P
oh, that is interesting:

@Fabby: Unless more than one vulnerability can have the same CVE number, I think that I have found what it might be... As the CVE number (CVE_2012_0110) in the definition which was given to me by ClamAV also seems to be defined on this page.

@Mateo :D :D :D

user136984
Anyway, does anybody have any idea yet then what I have got and what I should do about it?

user136984
Also, in the virus definition it says "PUA.Win...", does that mean that it only impacts Windows systems, or what does that mean?

user136984
7:55 PM
@Oli I don't think so as that is mostly addressing the "Packer" part of it... Although if you can find another example where it is not packer, but still something about win or win32 and it says the same then it is likely that they are talking about that.

user136984
But parts of that file say things like:

Also, I am not too clear on what this file is actually meant to contain, could anyone enlighten me?

@Fabby: Do you have any idea yet on what this could be and what I should do about it, and if it is in fact that CVE that I found information about? :)
