Is there a way to get the date command to output the date using the HTML version of a comma? Like: Monday, 12/29/14

you could certainly do it with sed and pipes.

j0h
maybe I can do it with php

php is awful. bowing out.

j0h
@hbdgaf is your logo a honey badger?

yes

j0h
12:04 AM
cool
The nature channel has a episode on the honey badger. Its pretty good

I know. That's sort of the point ;)

12:19 AM
Think I'm done with this conversation

j0h
@hbdgaf maybe they need grep
Im lucky. all my shit has just worked. or i get it to work I get hang ups on stupid things like how to write the crap code i need to get a job done

i just don't buy stupid crap that is known to be buggy.
@j0h the last comment wasn't directed at you, it was directed at the conversation link.

Man i designed a beowulf six years ago. parts it out. give the list to the guy who wanted it built. He went and used the list to get almost the same parts. but his parts, saved him 200$ total. Oh but they werent supported hardware.
guy never could build that cluster.

well, you buy crap, you get crap. garbage in garbage out and all that.

j0h
Last I checked he as 8 very decent PCs running but not clusterd
it was so sad

goes back to watching old episodes of black sails

@Seth trying tonight.
i just need to have a functional laptop tomorrow.
because doing work stuff!

12:57 AM

1:19 AM
@jrg good luck! Still haven't gotten a hold of my friend :/
I wonder.. Do you know what kernel+nvidia driver you have?

jrg
1:41 AM
@Seth no clue yet
grabbing the ISO right now.
I want to put Ubuntu on it, but I unfortunately need Adobe suite enough that it gets tricky... :(
@hbdgaf not much, you?

@jrg: Is this an actual answer?
It "feels" like a really vague form of spam to me.
But between the poor grammar and poor formatting, I can't tell.

jrg
Uh, I don't know.
i guess i'd make a note to check on that user in a few days.
and see if they continue to post junk
noobslab.com/2014/12/use-nvidia-graphics-drivers-in.html < Semi-bookmark so I can find this in an hour.

2:36 AM
Never thought I'd need a serial port...

2:51 AM
An actual hardware serial port?
Or a virtual serial port?

hardware
db9 to be more exact.

2 hours later…
4:30 AM
So I just discovered that Western Digital used PHP to write the web UI for my NAS.

thats sounds very scary @NathanOsman

I'm having some fun poking around in the NAS via SSH.
Apparently the whole thing is powered by a PPC processor.
processor	: 0

j0h
I want to have fun poking around a NAS

talk about unsecure

@Virusboy What's insecure?

4:41 AM
dat NAS

Why?

First off PHP isnt exactly built for secuirty, second PPC procesor has a small flaw that allow certain ports in without sudo/auth certs

Well, first of all, PHP scripts are only as insecure as the programmer writing them. Secondly, the NAS is behind a hardware firewall, so I'm not terribly worried.
So it looks like the UI uses CakePHP.
WD2TB:/var/www/UI# ls
README app cake data index.php vendors
I could have some fun here "rebranding" the UI :)

have fun

The contents of /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main
deb ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main
I can list installed packages via "dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall".
It's got Python 2.5 installed. Ouch.

4:50 AM
well it is Wheezy after all

Ugh. Remind me never to read the comments section on a Youtube video ever again.
Amazing video! I loved it!

@RPiAwesomeness: never read the comments section on a Youtube video ever again.
(You said to remind you.)
(So I did.)

@NathanOsman Thank you :)

You're welcome.
Any time.

And then I read the amazing (#EXTREMESarcasmHere) comments by Berta Lovejoy, "Feminist, Promoter Of Equality, Love, and Peace." & Gustaf Farthinder, "Homosexual Diversity Novelist Enthusiast and Critic".
Oh my gosh. The LACK of pure thinking skills in these people is absurd.
Yay, you're Homosexual & Feminist, so obviously, you have every right to take the simplest of things (having a lack of major female characters - which isn't true - and having races) in a novel written several decades ago, and say that it's horrible and shouldn't ever be allowed to be published.
ARGH!
I'm done now.
@NathanOsman You know that UserScript, burn chat messages or whatever it is?
I need that, for Youtube comments.

4:58 AM
I don't think I wrote that one.

@NathanOsman No, but you know which one I'm referring to, right?

A lack of female character? They didnt read the books then. They just be speak out the arse of Smaug

Is this a reasonable way to test the speed of my system RAM (I have no swap when I did this)?
mkdir /media/ram1
mount -t tmpfs -o size=4096M tmpfs /media/ram1
mkdir /media/ram2
mount -t tmpfs -o size=4096M tmpfs /media/ram2

@Virusboy ikr. If you read the comment, make sure to read the replies. She gets owned so hard.
One of the replies almost has as many upvotes as the original comment :)
So there isn't a major female character in the Fellowship. They're out there fighting orcs, trolls, firey demons of doom, undead zombie kings who are all but invincible, and all while on low rations & hiking long distances. Do honestly think it makes sense to send a woman?
Yeah, women can also do things men can do - but we are made differently.
Men are genetically wired to be stronger and are supposed to be the defender of the women.
But, I'm gonna stop there 'cause then I'll stop thinking and start spewing off random stuff, and then I'll be just as guilty as the comment sections.
In other news, this video is pretty cool.
I don't entirely agree with everything he's saying - but he does have a point.
Anyways. Enough controversy. Goodnight

5:17 AM
Hey, I can "apt-get update" and "apt-get install" on this NAS. Cool.

Be glad, then. Very glad.
Grrr. How long does it take SE to launch a new site? Or is Vi and Vim doomed to?

its doomed when they say no to committing it

HI
any one here knock knock !

Yup.

Me, kinda

i am useing dia software i want to uninstall it fully so i can use apt-get pruge right ? but how will i come to know which package to uninstall ?? @NathanOsman can u guide ?

you tell it apt-get purge dia
difference between uninstall and purge is it also deletes config files

6:50 AM
@abhi Yes, the name of the package is "dia".

Not sure about per user stuff, may have to hunt those down in dotfiles.

just nuke the .file in /home

@abhi If you ever want to know what package provides a certain binary, visit this page and enter the name.

starred for reference guide

okey thanks but just curious if i want to check which package is responsible for respective application then how can i check thank you all for your time :)

6:52 AM
@abhi: see what @NathanOsman linked ;p

you got it txs man !:)

Glad to help.

I suspect there's another listing somewhere locally since your system may suggest what package installs something?

i did apt-get purge dia . it run well but still in terminal if i type dia than application is getting open ?

g_p
@abhi, you can use " dpkg -S <file name>" to find the package which provide it.

6:56 AM
cyberciti, so useful, but so damned dodgy ;p

dpkg -S <filename> in this dose fine name means a configuration package file ?

g_p
Type "dpkg -S dia" if you use "dia" in terminal to launch dia.

@g_p it is running dia .
i already did apt-get purge dia . then it should uninstall dia right ?

g_p
yep, it should.
what is the output of "dpkg -S dia"?

its running some long list !
should i paste it ?

g_p
7:10 AM
paste it.

Sorry, this command should be used with the complete path to file. What is the output of "which dia"?

which dia ? are you asking version .
sorry
/usr/bin/dia
dpkg -S /usr/bin/dia
dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /usr/bin/dia.

g_p
How did you install it. Using apt-get or by compiling from source?

using ubuntu software center

g_p
7:19 AM
Then "sudo apt-get purge dia dia-common" should work.

@g_p txs it got worked !
can i ask some thing ?

g_p
yes

if i have one application/software install . where can i find the config file/package for that ?

g_p
Use "dpkg-query -L <package_name>".

but if i don't know which package dose application use ? than can i use application name in place of package name .
sorry guys for this irritation n just trying understand . :)

Q: Unable to install anything using apt

SchemerI was trying to install an earlier gcc and g++ (4.6.3) for compatibility reasons and now apt seems to be broken. It appears that apt-get install behaves like this for everything, not just dpkg: >> sudo apt-get install dpkg Reading package lists.. Done Building dependency tree Reading state info...

8:30 AM
please dont ping me if your already in an active conversation with someone else unless you are getting my attention specifically @abhi

8:49 AM
After hours and hours of an installation marathon I had to spend with Windows7 yesterday I again realize what a tremendous good job our devs did. We just quickly install Ubuntu and go ahead with more important tasks...

I don't wanna life on this planet anymore!

lol

To be able to purchase knowledge is something i don't support!
Knowledge should be freely available!

<-- has knowledge, wanna buy?
What makes me angry is when they sell work that was funded by tax.

11:10 AM
@Takkat Gimme free!
@Takkat Wasn't there a hacker that hacked a university because they made some of their knowledge proprietary. They sued him, he fell into a depression and he then killed himself.
Can't remember his name?
Aaron Hillel Swartz (November 8, 1986 – January 11, 2013) was an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer and Internet hacktivist who was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS and the Markdown publishing format, the organization Creative Commons, the website framework web.py and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami. He committed suicide while under federal indictment for data-theft, a prosecution that was characterized by his family as being "the product of a criminal-justice system...
Thats what i was thinking of

much better :)

> computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer and Internet hacktivist who was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS[3] and the Markdown publishing format,[4] the organization Creative Commons,[5] the website framework web.py[6] and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami.
He died at the age of 26

it always makes me cry a bit when the best people leave.

@Takkat I stopped crying in my teenage years. This world is a warped world with White, black and gray areas. The good guys don't always win.

"don't always" is a far too optimistic view.

11:21 AM
@Takkat Yeah, true. But, I'm an optimist.

\o/ that'll make you a winner in any case.

@Takkat Yaaay, I won something! :D

@Takkat yaay!
The funniest comment I ever made:
The funniest comment I ever made:
> No. Banshee - if not Rhythmbox - works great for music management, import, export, delete music on your phone.

Shotwell for image management. Import, export, delete photos from your phone.

I worked with Itunes under Mac, and Windows. It's bloatware and generally just a pretty crapware.

It's just a pretty secretary with big b00bs, that does half the work, others can and do twice as good. But, generally your gonna just fool around with her and accept her mediocre work, because one likes to have something to look at: (.)(.)

11:40 AM
<-- blushes - I started my mp3 collection more than a decade ago with iTunes because you could get the downloads for free from Coke codes.
Then I had to actually pay for converting them to DRM-free mp3 for use outside of the iWorld.
That's when I stopped using it.

how can we acess the open tcp port ?

pay? I hate that word!

@blade19899 you're on the wrong side then... ;)

@Takkat ({-;-})

@abhi if it's open it will just let you get there, e.g. by http://<IP>:<port>

11:45 AM
@Takkat :) I started mine around 1996. I downloaded 1.4 GB of music from various FTP servers over a 14.4K modem. I then lost it all when changing a hard drive like an idiot :(

@terdon outch!

1.4G was huge at the time. It must have taken me about a year and a half to download.
iTunes did not exist more than a decade ago did it?

yeah, 1,4 GB was like never to be filled up in a whole lifetime.
@terdon don't remember exactly when I started using it, but it feels like ancient now.

Yes, apparently it was released in 2001
Huh, I thought it was much newer.

@terdon: are you a moderator on AU too? or only on U&L? (because someone is going around flagging old and established answers as "opinion-based")

11:47 AM
that's a sign of getting older :P

The mp3 world was great in the nineties. Nobody knew about it so it was just a small group of international geeks. Everyone knew each other.
@Fabby Only on U&L. But mods on any site are mods across the chat network. So I have super powers in chat but not on the main site. There, I'm just another sap.
@Fabby You mean voting to close? You can't see answer flags.

OK, I'll edit and ask oli in...

Can you give an example?

Oli: Sorry to bother you, but someone is going around flagging old and established answers as "opinion-based" (revenge?) here, here and here too

@Takkat yes , but its TCP not Http so its not sowing
actuly in my office , there is ccTV camera and it got ip but htttp is secure with authentication only TCP port is open

11:53 AM
@Fabby those all look like they should be closed.

Community protected form 4 years ago?

@Fabby So? That's just to avoid spam answers, it's not an indication of the post's quality.

Please elaborate... They're answers that will help users...
And they've been upvoted a lot, so some people were helped by them...
(for a certain definition of "a lot") ;-)
Why delete now? Are we running out of space? >:)

@terdon this is why I keep multiple copies of my music

@JourneymanGeek: I don't: Only the directory listing is in my back-up...
But then: Music is background to me... Just something to turn on when guests are around... >:)

Q: Is it really useful to flag very old "best..." questions as "primarily opinion based"?

guntbertDon't get me wrong, "What is the best ...." question should usually be closed fast. But, when they are several years old and have many/several answers I see no point in bringing them into the review queue.

@JourneymanGeek I was about 15 FFS! What did I know? :)
Damn, my internet is acting up.
@Fabby also take a look at this:
23
Q: Please do not delete closed questions with many views and many upvotes

TakkatRecently closed questions appear in the delete queue even though they had many upvotes and many views too. Some examples: What media (music and video) players are there? 52 upvotes 21k views 21 fav What's your recommendation on drive partitioning schemes for a desktop and home server? 57 up...

Those questions will not be deleted, just closed. \

Lol. I still have CD backups from way back

@JourneymanGeek Ah, yes, I might have some somewhere too.

@Terdon: reading...

@Fabby The basic idea is that opinion seeking is off topic. Old questions were allowed and these should now be closed so that people won't think that such things are on topic (the broken window hypothesis). That does not mean that they will be deleted,. Just that they will be closed and so discourage such questions being asked again.

I skipped them anyway, so too late for a close vote on those 2 from me, but handy to know for the future... :)
Thanks for the info! (and sorry to have bothered you with it)
can you edit my question and remove the [at]Oli?

12:08 PM
@Fabby Why sorry? We're chatting for heaven's sake!

:D :D :D

@Fabby And done, I just removed the @, left the "Oli".

It just seems like a dumb question now I have the answer...

1:18 PM
Hey there. I need to install some software to use a Cassy (usb sensor set). Can somebody tell me how to install this software in wine on my 14.10? It's a .msi and probably needs .NET (?)
wine msiexec /i xyz.msi
just gives me errors like
err:msidb:get_tablecolumns column 1 out of range
err:msidb:get_tablecolumns column 2 out of range
fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented.
There I downloaded the msi: ld-didactic.de/service/softwaredownload/cassy-s.html (GERman version)

USB + Wine may not work...

AppDB on WineHQ says it would run: appdb.winehq.org/…
That prog would be an alternative solution, but I have no idea how to install this... sourceforge.net/projects/ghmessen2

if Wine say it runs then that's possible... no idea about the errors though.

And what would I have to do to install the GHMessen app from sourceforge?

@ByteCommander that says it works against serial. You cannot use USB devices with Wine

1:30 PM
@fossfreedom I think I downloaded something that would map the USB device onto a virtual serial port (zip from website)

hmm - sounds like good lateral thinking.

And the GHMessen prog looks like a Linux app, doesn't it? I just don't know how to install this (what to download or which repository to add or whatever)

quick google with your tablecolumns error - looks like you need at least wine 1.7 to install it
also looks like you need to use winetricks to install msxml3

jrg
@Seth Yeah, that didn't work.
As soon as I installed the nvidia stuff from xorg-edgers, it failed.
xorg-edgers by itself worked fine...

@ByteCommander personally - spin up a virtual machine to test the install rather than potentially screwing up your main wine install

1:43 PM
bother Apple for making Hackintoshing so difficult :P

ooo
Well, I guess we know who they're copying slightly...
Looks remarkably like Pages on OS X
Not that I'm complaining, it's just very similar

Lol, there server is down for 'maintenance':

It's been down for a while now...

ah
Didn't they have a new gui in the making called citrus?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Actually, that's better than yesterday.
Yesterday the libreoffice.org site wouldn't even come up, it just timed out

Q: How can I make the most of my non-server hardware with server software installed?

FaneI have a standard computer device running UBUNTU 14.04 server. I'm using it for testing but I'll need to expose my work soon enough. I have other machines laying around here - some strong, some not as much - and I was wondering how I could make the most of it. Is it possible to join all process...

jrg
so there is at least some circumstantial evidence that it's a derivative work.

@jrg I kinda understand why they only introduced minor ui changes. They don't wanna alienate their users, whit a user interface thats entirely different then the previous one.

@blade19899 Makes more sense than Microsoft's approach ;)

@RPiAwesomeness True that. Gotta use Ms office 2010 at work. Has been out for years and still don't like the interface!

@blade19899 Not to mention Windows 8....

2:26 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Blah. Some people seem to like it. I say, nothing. I just walk away.

@blade19899 Yeah. I've never used it much more than to help a friend out, but I find it not well designed, especially for non-touch users
I dunno about that design, I like their current one better.
However, I haven't used it, so I'm really not qualified to say that

jrg
The move from 2010 to 2013 wasn't bad for me.

@SmokeDetector The heck!???!?
That question is from 2012 ... :D
Or did the offensive answer get removed?

3:14 PM
yeah, it's been deleted

MJB
Hi all, there, I'd like to explore how cross-platform Unity is. I found an old bug report from 3 years ago without resolution. Would it be wise to open a question about that here (without starting a flame-war) ?

@MJB Normally we don't like questions about bugs, but it's worth a shot if you need help with a specific issue not just the general bug.

jrg
@MJB unity the desktop environment or unity the game env?

MJB
3:30 PM
@jrg The Desktop environment :)
@RPiAwesomeness, it would be more of a general question, something like "How would it be possible to install Unity in a non Ubuntu Linux environment". I know this question would be better placed in another stackexchange, but before I do that, I'd like to know if there're easy answers I've missed.
Any insights to this are more than welcome.

@MJB Yeah, that question would probably fit better on Unix & Linux

@MJB I doubt it will be accepted on AU. It is too broad. But in general: you need to start at the init/upstart part where lightdm is activated. It all starts with lightdm in /etc/init.d
Plus technically you are no longer using a supported Ubuntu >:-D
But getting all the packages together to have an actual unity desktop on something none-Ubuntu is something else :-P

3:47 PM
@Fabby dc3dd is just dd with included progress indication. No substitute for ddrescue
