@Fabby Where did you go? Got hit by a lightning?

Review queue
Using up all my votes...
>:)

Ah, 1:00, I can review again!

@Seth: it works! I can review much more close votes if I use the "open in new tab" and then "skip" button!

@Fabby Huh? How/why does this work?

Why? Developers think linearly. Sysengs think in parallel
:P
But you cannot review more then you've got votes.

12:12 AM
Well, not every reviewed post needs a flag or a vote.

12:35 AM
@Fabby just make sure you are voting "leave open" on the ones that need it.

Yes, yes...
@Seth: I'm a "Leave open" guy... When in serious doubt: skip
When in doubt: leave open

If you don't know don't take an action (unless you count skip as an action)

Yeah, "skip" is an action and "review another queue and then go back so you can read it a second time later" is also an action! ;-)
@Seth: Done for today... I got 40 votes... Did something happen to the numbers site-wide?
Out for a smoke now, but if you have time to have a look here as Oli for some or other reason is hiding from this...

@Fabby Yeah, when the queue is >=1k the review amount automatically doubles.

But it was below 1K when I started... (that's why I asked)

12:48 AM
Well it might have grown while you reviewed :)
Let me take a quick run through it; getting kind of big.

:) Tomorrow I'll do another 60! 40 official and 20 non-official...

Someone upvoted this!?

I don't know how Luís did 1000 in a few days...

Me either. What was quite a feat indeed!

"Some error" can be fixed by doing "something." !!! Great quote!
I'm going to remember that one!

12:51 AM
@Fabby Wut?

It's alive! ALIVE!!!

@Fabby who?

There was some OP who said he got "Some Error" and then continued and then completely froze
@ByteCommander: Youu too apparently
end some dude said in the comments:
"Some error" can be fixed by doing "something."
:D

I read this, but why "alive"?

Because suddenly RPiAwesomeness crawled out of the woodwork...

12:54 AM
Oh dear. I'm now a cockroach? thaaanks

Can't goats crawl too in a special way? ;D

@RPiAwesomeness: I'm trying to use different expressions that @ByteCommander can easily look up on the Internet

So don't take it too personally...

Oops, I thought woodwork would mean forest. Sorry, goat! ;D

12:56 AM
He told me he knows School English,

@ByteCommander Yes, but crawling out of the woodwork is usually something creepy things (like cockroaches) tend to do.
Zombies too sometimes, but only if they're the junior sized ones.

@ByteCommander You should select the text, riight-click and google (or StartPage)
(if you don't know what it means or sounds funny)
Draining the dragon...

Thanks for teaching. And yes, I DID google it, but after writing....

I'm an native english speaker and I still Google stuff/phrases. Don't feel bad ;)

And then you have the differences between EN_US and EN_GB
EN_GB: I'm going to wash my hands
EN_US: I'm going to talk to a man about my horse...

12:58 AM
Well folks. I have an announcement to make. I just transferred a 4.1 GB file across the network using NitroShare - and the memory usage for the application never rose above 16 MB. I have now fixed the most serious bug that has plagued the program since launch over two years ago.

@Fabby Google translator doesn't really help at this kind of expressions... Normal googling is better

@NathanOsman \o/

@ByteCommander: yes! Definitely!
@NathanOsman: Congratulations!

In other news, a local ISP is laying Fiber! O.O

(How many comma's did you move?)

12:59 AM
And it's probably gonna cost a ton

Ugh.

@RPiAwesomeness: did you read about the DNS shit?

It's not ready for release yet - the transfer speed was about 10 MB/s over Wireless N but it jumped all over the place.

@Fabby No? Plz link?

@Seth: exhausted?

1:01 AM
@Fabby No, just frustrated at all the misuse of the off-topic reasons I see.

@RPiAwesomeness Me too for German. Until yesterday, I never heard of this expression: german.stackexchange.com/questions/20396/… Probably @Fabby can understand it...

By me too?
@ByteCommander: word humour in German is still too difficult for me...
English: sometimes
French: most of the time

And that's it!

@NathanOsman yay!
Using Go?

1:03 AM
Nope.
I switched back to Qt/C++ and I'm glad I did.
Go is great, but it wasn't ready for prime time just yet.

Ah. I'd be interested to know why, you seemed so excited about Go for a while :)
Ahh.

They say (translated word by word): Shall we go to a vegan restaurant today?
Answer: **On my unicorn or on yours?**
Which means that the 2nd person does not want to go.
I thought it was funny because of the Unicorns ;D

@RPiAwesomeness: DNS Benchmark tool. grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm Windows only... Doesn't like some versions of wine

@Fabby Not that I've noticed.

(whew)

1:04 AM
@Seth It was the way Go dealt with network addresses that really gave me trouble.
Qt at least has a straightforward API for enumerating network interfaces, addresses, etc.

@Fabby The default benchmark works with current wine 1.6.2, but it will crash when you try to build a custom list.

Ah! :) That's the best feature of all!
That's what you should start with...

@Fabby So...I run that and see what DNS servers give me the best performance?

Looks like a question for @ThomasW.: askubuntu.com/questions/578112/how-should-i-deal-with-bugs-that-are-for-unsuppor‌ted-versions-of-ubuntu

yup
and make a custom hosts file

1:06 AM
@NathanOsman Interesting. I'll remember that ;)

and noscript

Meh, really any DNS server keeps up just fine with my internet :P

and adblock+

@RPiAwesomeness Yo. For me (out of the default list) mine was the best.
@RPiAwesomeness I thought that too, but Fabby has a different opinion. 56k modem, right?

@ByteCommander Uh, dunno...I don't think so, cause we can get up to 80 Kb/s on a good day...

1:08 AM
@Seth: Do you know how the "Leave open" works?
Mening: is it a majority vote or does one "Leave open" cancel one "close"?

Hm, I used to have one to plug into the telephone box that got 56k.

@RPiAwesomeness: in you case: everything helps!!!
Back in my time, when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth...
we were happy with 2400 BAUD and 2 rocks!!!
;-)

What was BAUD again? ;)

I remember that one of the guys at the computer club said: but 2400 BAUD is too fast to read!
bits per second
so 2,4Kb/s

Ah, just thought you wrote beats/sec!

1:10 AM
so :D

That would be REAL speed metal! :D

0.2 KByte/s
and 1200 BAUD if you sent a text file, was just fast enough so that you could read it while it was coming in...

A: What are the review queues, and how do they work?

ManishearthWhat is a "review queue"? Review queues (also known as review tasks) contain posts that possibly need community attention, as determined by the system or other community users. You are shown these posts, one at a time, and you "review" them. Like flagging, there are badges for this. So, what co...

Don't know the full answer top of my head, but that will!

readning...

@Fabby You read 1200 chars per sec? Respect ;)

1:12 AM
bits!!!
120 chars/second...

Oops, it gets late! Forgot to divide /8

8 bits, 1 stop bit, 1 parity bit...

Still quite fast

divide by 10!
Hold on, but you needed 2 charactes to display something...
so 60 chars/sec

??? ASCII was 8 bit!

1:14 AM
(the others were color / underline / ... codes...

7 bit without country specific tables

yes, but modems worked with 10 bits

@Fabby Okay, I ran the thingy...now what?

What's the fastest DNS server? (did you benchmark yet?)

Yeah
64.81.159.2

1:16 AM
ah, set that in de router as DNS server!
(then everyone uses the fastest one!

(do an nslookup first
then type
server 64.81.159.2
and then:
playboy.com

...um. No.

I'm just curious if you will be able to feel the increase in speed...

(to be sure that you've got a non-cached version!)
ok, something else that no one in the house uses:
something! I always use playboy.com...
No one ever goes there as there is nothing interesting to see!

1:19 AM
Trying to figure out how to set the DNS on my router...

Look at this guy: still at school, but already a hacker ;D askubuntu.com/q/578624/367990

@ByteCommander: surfing will "feel" more responsive

nslookup server 64.81.159.2 www.google.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

@RPiAwesomeness Sounds not that good. Can you ping the DNS server?

nslookup server 8.8.8.8 google.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
Yes

1:24 AM
@Fabby I thought people just go there to read the articles?

Doesn't seem to be much of a speed increase, if any...

@JourneymanGeek: I don't...
I used to buy Playboy every week from the day I turned 16 until I was about 21....

@RPiAwesomeness any difference you see would only be on the first load

For shame. Naughty @Fabby

1:26 AM
And then gave my entire collection to the neighbour...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah.
Nothing that I notice.
Speedtest is the same.

Surfing will "feel" faster...

I didn't even know it was a weekly!

Speedtest and downloads will remain the same.
Mum on FB will notice!

1:27 AM
Sorry, month!!!!

:D

And their site is basically listed as an example of what our government blocks

Don't worry about that...
They do???
block???
an American???
COMPANY???
:D

I'm seeing little to no improvement :P

1:28 AM
@RPiAwesomeness: every DNS lookup will go faster...

If anything it's worse

So web-pages with lots of pics
Hey, let it cache a bit!
Leave it for 24 hours and ask mum if she sees a difference!
(You will not, because you don't surf)

Do you honestly believe this will do anything?

Yes!
All together:

Okay. How will I notice it again?

1:30 AM
FaceBook!

@RPiAwesomeness All believers go to church, please!

Your mother!
Ask her!
You will not see the difference...

@Fabby kk

:D

@ByteCommander wut?

1:31 AM
This is one thing only, you also still need to:
hosts file, noscript, adblock+

Aaand, host file is done how?

@RPiAwesomeness You asked if Fabby believed that it would help.

But, doesn't noscript nuke a ton of the internet
@ByteCommander Oh

And believing is what people do in church...

Yeah, all the crap!
:D :P

1:32 AM
k :)

So, cat /etc/hosts
should be nearly empty...

I had to allow this page.

Yeah, permanently...
this one!

1:34 AM
@RPiAwesomeness It starts by nuking EVERY java script and stuff, but you manually allow scripts from specific sites (for 1x or forever), until it only kicks the crap (analytics, ads, ...) out.

@ByteCommander That makes sense :)

I do the opposite:
I block everything until I allow

Maybe "Disconnect" would also help

@Fabby So, I change my /etc/hosts file to match that MVPS?

1:35 AM
@NathanOsman So, you wrote NitroShare?

@RPiAwesomeness: It's a windows hosts file, so I remember I had to do some translations, but it's nearly a year ago,
so let me do in on my machine and I'll upload mine to you...

Okay ;)

I update 1/year manually...

@RPiAwesomeness Yes.

@Fabby I'll just have to check it over, just to make sure that you aren't redirecting everything to playboy.com ;)

1:36 AM
@NathanOsman starred!

@NathanOsman: does it do Bluetooth and run on Android???

Support for Android is planned.
But don't expect that for a while yet - I need to get it running smoothly on the desktop first :P

>:) I had a look through the stuff, and asked the dumb question...
Looks cool though!
I'm saving it in my favourites!

Hopefully in less than two weeks, I'll have something for you guys to try.

If you need people sitting on their keyboard, I'm your man!!!

1:40 AM
@NathanOsman awesome!

(There was this crazy Professor the IT guys at the Uni had that would test apps
by launching them and then sitting on his keyboard)

@NathanOsman is that with the qt 5 version?

and if it didn't crash, he started looking at your source code....

@Mateo Yup!
Completely rewritten from scratch.

Cool, time to fire up my Mac yet?

1:43 AM
Not quite yet.
At a minimum, we have to wait for Feb. 1 since I'm using features from CMake 3.2.
...which isn't even available yet :P
(Well, not quite true - the feature exists in CMake 3.1, but it only works for GCC, not Clang or MSVC++.)
It will be easier this time, though - no dependencies other than Qt, and CMake is much easier to use than qmake.

Sweet, that was always fun ;)
Found this at goodwill:

I also got rid of the setup wizard since it is no longer needed. Everything is set up automatically.

Win 3.1 software!

@Mateo Looks like something for Win 3.1.

1:47 AM
Wow, After Dark... that goes back.

Screensavers!
Still in the shrink wrap inside

AntiVirus for Win 3.1? Did viruses even exist back then?

I think worms go way back...

I've got a shrink-wrapped MSDOS 5.0 box in my cupboard!!!

@Fabby awesome

1:50 AM
I've got the 5 1/4" disks for MS-DOS 3-something. Somewhere...

How much did you pay for those?

@Fabby $.01?

$3 US

Best$3EvR!

Creeper was an experimental self-replicating program written by Bob Thomas at BBN in 1971. It was designed not to damage but to demonstrate a mobile application. It is generally accepted to be the first computer virus. Creeper infected DEC PDP-10 computers running the TENEX operating system.The Reaper program was created by Ray Tomlinson to delete the Creeper program. == Reaper == The Reaper program was a computer worm, like Creeper, but its purpose was to delete the latter. This fact was an inspiration for Core War, the series Hyperion by Dan Simmons, especially later books Endymion and The Rise...
I'm off to bed!
Good night, sleep tight! (or stay awake!) Whatever!

Anyway, basically bought it for the after dark nostaliga

Sleep well, my friend! @Fabby

@Seth FWIW learn to post links to questions as actual links - can't get to the q when you post it as text and NOT a link because stackexchange mobile fails to read it and we can't copy text from the mobile chat logs due to the page settings.
**glares**

I.. thought I posted it as a link o_O

you missed the http:// part

whoops, apparently not. Copy paste fail I guess.

so it was parsed as text

Q: How should I deal with bugs that are for unsupported versions of Ubuntu?

labyrinthI've started getting involved with triaging bugs. Three of the first four bugs I looked at were about Hardy (8.04). What should I do to help triage bugs for versions of Ubuntu that are no longer supported? Should I just set them to 'invalid'?

@RPiAwesomeness They probably just pasted what they saw in the achievements indicator, which counts all sites.
@jrg Hmm, that's not good. I can ask my friend and either check what version of the drivers he has or see if he is even using the nvidia card.

@Fabby I don't think that's product placement - they're both fairly major bits of software and if you're spamming, why would you suggest two competing products?
