Hm, I don't think it's called a dongle.
oh wait it does
@muru ok dealt with it.
oh crap. forgot to uncheck the checkbox O_O

Thanks. The comment accompanying the edit worried me..

@jokerdino O_O

don't scare me

Q: Etymology of "dong" and "dongle"

terdonDong as in ding-dong is clearly onomatopoetic as confirmed by etymonline.com: ding dong imitative of the sound of a bell, c.1560. and similarly for ding: ding (v.) 1819, "to sound as metal when struck," possibly abstracted from ding-dong, of imitative origin. The meaning "t...

You're a dinosaur, not sure I could scare you ;)

6:10 PM
@terdon interesting read. thank you.
@Seth that ping sound is good enough to scare me.

@Seth Heh, I always think his avatar is smoking. Which segues neatly into:

haha, that's a nice one

@jokerdino hehe
@terdon But he's a tea-rex.

@Seth I know. I must have clicked on that avatar at least 5 times thinking "huh, a smoking dinosaur" and then chuckled at the joke. I keep forgetting for some reason.
And I'll thank you not to speculate as to what that reason may be :)

Q: Vintage terminal for Ubuntu

ryekayoSo I have just been introduced to Cathode for OSX and I am completely fascinated by how classic it looks with it's 1970s retro style. Does anyone know of any programs/packages I can download to get my terminal to sport that very look? If there are no packages available, is there are setting I can...

6:25 PM
lol

6:43 PM
@Lucio it would be interesting as a point of reference, but 1) it's a debugger not a static analysis tool and 2) it's for windows not linux/unix. besides, i'm having a more interesting time trying to write all the features of ida than i would just using a workaround tool.

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L ARG! MY EYES!

@Braiam The only people that REALLY want their terminal to look like that are people who never used one of THOSE terminals.

Can someone settle this argument: is it normal for a standard SATA magnetic hard disk, while performing reads and writes, to make an audible, repetitive, clicking noise?

@Richard yup

@Braiam cool thankx

6:51 PM
I've never had a healthy hard-drive of any type make a repetitive clicking noise... that's almost always bad.
@Braiam you seriously said that?

@Richard there are some models that their selling point is not making noises, which are fairly new all of them

@Braiam I assume it is simply the magnet doing its job? programs say the disk is healthy

@hbdgaf that's a first world problem

I'm with hbdgaf, never had clicking noises that weren't bad.

@Braiam Ok. So here they don't do that unless they're broken, but there they do that all the time?

6:53 PM
but that doesn't necessarily mean yours are bad.
@Richard Just make sure you have all your stuff backed up ;)

i've always taken it to mean that the hard disk is running and healthy
@Seth yes right (:

@hbdgaf old disks make clicking noises

:s

7:11 PM
Well, you can sometimes hear the disks spinning up and some noises are normal. They usually aren't clicks though. More of a, umm, cough?
This kind of noise is normal:
This is bad:
@Richard ^^

that is more of a ping- just the loud chatter clicking is the seek time getting long, which is a sign that the sectors are going to go bad

7:27 PM
sup @Mateo - took the day when I slept through my alarm. If I'm ragged out enough to sleep through 2 hours of alarm - I needed to do it anyway.

wow, 2 hours. do you have a alarm that speeds up after a few min?

nope. it just rings for one minute out of every nine.

@terdon similar to the sound of a leaf stuck in a bicycle wheel...yes...
@terdon RIP

hm, mine starts beeping a couple every 2 sec, then after about 30seconds it beeps every second then after a bit more it beeps like crazy
@Richard oh no, so you have the bad sound?

@Mateo Nah I have the good/going bad? sound

7:34 PM
@Mateo it's not normally a problem. i think it's that there was an issue at work yesterday. so, i wanted subconsciously to go in even less than normal.

@Mateo after a bit more... i.imgur.com/h7p6VEF.jpg

After an additional twenty minutes, the subdermal implant electrode begins giving increasingly high amperage stimuli

and it has battery backup, one of those that keeps time on chip... so not something to pack on the plane with the battery still in ;)
used to have one that did daylight savings and the date automatically... till the prez switched up the days...

oh, did you see the antihack device charlie miller and his buddy put together after they pwned some cars?

interesting, guess it was a matter of time. since there are cars out there that can be driven by computer, all they are missing is the computer to give instructions

7:49 PM
well, they did stuff like remotely access power steering assist to tell understeer/oversteer protection to "help out" when it didn't need to, resulting in swerves etc

man, they have the cars on a wireless network?

i didn't see the code for it... your guess is as good as mine.

> "But in their tests, they say it hasn’t misinterpreted any innocent signals in the car’s networks as attacks. That’s in part, they say, because a car’s digital communications are far more predictable than those of a typical computer network. “It’s just machines talking to machines,” "
yikes, "wireless hacks are possible, too."

@Mateo another first world problem...

@Braiam for anyone with a new car ;) my car dosn't even play mp3's

7:59 PM
o/ , Thanks for cleaning up the close que

@bodhi.zazen Most of that was just one guy :O
Went through 800 reviews in one day.

and we love luis for a reason... i think someone complained on meta, but all he gets from me is a thank you.

wow, luis is on a roll!

he completely cleared the queue... completely.

@hbdgaf Same here.

8:15 PM
@bodhi.zazen is 90-something really your age, or you are pulling our legs?

so

A: Is there any support for mass link editing?

Nick CraverWe don't have a way to do this, but as luck happens we're software developers. Jon, you've given a metric crap ton of knowledge here and it's supplemented by blog links all over the place. We don't want that to be harmed, so on something of this scale we'll just make it happen. Send me a URL ma...

@Lucio is a shared object now? i have to load him on my laptop and see what he does :)
see the luis went spaceship reference. if you didn't star it yet, you need to

@Braiam where do you see that ?

8:27 PM
@Seth - I understand, would have prefered to delegate the task to 5-10 users and delegate by committee , I would have helped

@bodhi.zazen hm, that is an interesting idea. Would have taken good coordination, but not hard.

lol, wonder where that date came from
Just have to raise the 20 or 40 post limit for a few users for a few days

We have a room here people used to use for coordinating big question handling (closing, deleting, etc), but it's usage tapered off until it died :-/

when was unix epoch? that's my first guess

@hbdgaf BIBGO=)
yes, the regulators was handy, sort of noticed it tapered a bit

8:30 PM
first guess...

@bodhi.zazen I'm not sure that is possible.. but between a couple mods, 4-6 users and the 10k tools it would be doable.
We have 50 close votes now so.
Hopefully it will be a while before it gets to that scale again though ;P

Well, as has been discussed on meta, the "real work" is in the process of reviewing the questions / answers / dups and nudging things in the right direction, either to "close", more info, or a solution

Yup.

@hbdgaf I didn't get that part

@LuisAlvarado I tried, but failed :(

6 hours ago, by Lucio
no idea who to make it reachable from host machine and have internet on guest without using port-forwarding

@Seth on what
So you want internet on guest?
is the network setup done with the NAT method?
in my case, simply my saying the nic will use NAT it gets internet

the port forward was simply to allow the ssh to come on it and talk to the guest

yep, you're right. That definitely works

9:46 PM
Glad it did ^^

but I thought that it was also possible to do it without NAT only. Both in conjunction with nat and host-only

@LuisAlvarado clearing out the queue

Well nat would take care of the whole "Host giving me internet, Guest grabbing internet from it like a vampire on halloween"

right

so internet would come with NAT unless something else was configured inside the Guest to disallow this default behavior
like the cableconnected option for modifyvm
that WOULD drop internet
@Seth no problem friend.

9:51 PM
I guess will stop setting up rare networks

@Lucio nice song buddy

I appreciate your effort luis :)
thanks a lot

@LuisAlvarado is this a vbox question in question? you should just use a nat and host only adapter. that's the recommended deployment from loads of people

correct
well I don't know what it is for, ask Lucio
I just made one answer for it
I thought the question was "Setup Guest that has internet and also the Host has access to it via SSH"

yep, again, sorry for the confusion

9:54 PM
I used to tout vbox as the best, now I tout lxc even though I haven't used it yet. Seems like the best structural decision overall.

I need to reboot my machine
bbl

and i'm off for a bit. thanks again luis. there ARE people that appreciate you. just know that... and know it all the way. we do. <--- needs stars
