@sammyg hmmm that 1 post in there might work. but re-installing is going to be quicker.

@sammyg this will really help you.

Q: How to extend ext4 with gparted?

user248510I am having short in disk space in my ubuntu /dev/sda6 and i have 11.08 GB of free space unallocated in the sense.I have followed different article about the repartition but they are not working here when i try to move/resize sda6 the there will not be any free space to extend but it reduce if we...

So just to verify, in the Linux world, you can't resize the partition that Linux is installed on while running?

@sammyg you can not do that in any operating system

@Rinzwind Doesn't Windows allow to "extend" a "volume" in disk manager?
Even if it's the system partition?...

It does. LVM in the linux world lets you live resize...

9:02 AM
@hbdgaf oh yes :D lvm dooes

LVM, eh?

@sammyg not if someone is using the disc :-)

Logical Volume Manager?

@sammyg logical volume manager; it is an installation option ;-)
basically an extra layer

I'll note that down.

9:03 AM
lvm is awesome if you're a glutton for punishment on your personal box or running something in production...ever...

LVM is commonly used for the following purposes:

Managing large hard disk farms by allowing disks to be added and replaced without downtimes and services disruption, in combination with hot swapping.
On small systems (like a desktop at home), instead of having to estimate at installation time how big a partition might need to be in the future, LVM allows file systems to be easily resized later as needed.
Performing consistent backups by taking snapshots of the logical volumes.
Creating single logical volumes of multiple physical volumes or entire hard disks (somewhat similar to RAID 0, but

I'm too much of a Linux noob, but I'll check it out later on. So is this option available when installing Ubuntu?

Yes, but if you're not used to it - it's more confusing than helpful

ok

@sammyg forget about lvm. it is not needed for a normal desktop user (thatÅ› why I always forget about it :=) )
@hbdgaf soooooo why did you bring it up? >:-D

9:06 AM
I will skip it for now. But it's good to know that you have these power tools available for Linux.
So we know they are even, Windows and Linux...

Linux is all about powergirls
4

@Rinzwind because saying "not possible" is inaccurate. saying "not worth it for you" is accurate.

eh powertools
@sammyg if there are 2 persons on a windows disc doing stuff I bet you can not resize the disc ;-) thing is: in linux we -assume- there will be more than 1 even when there probably is not.

Who am I kidding here, there is a good chance that Linux is way more powerful and flexible than Windows. :)

That's not a maybe.

9:09 AM
the gparted live dvd is a must have powertool :=)

@Rinzwind "hing is: in linux we -assume- there will be more than 1 even when there probably is not." Good point! Clever!
See! Linux is so much smarter than Bill Gates & Co! :D

lol
Windows has had a different target audience ;-)
MS targetted the home user. Linux always targetted businesses

Having a clever system design is good for anybody! Home user or business, regardless.

@Rinzwind or the guy that wears this shirt 31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lpo43tMbpG1qlkfoxo1_500.jpg

yeah. windows was not made to be connected to the web. so it had flaws making it easier to infect it or take over.
(That is why there are so many virusses etc.)
On linux someone can mess up your /home/ pretty easy if you let them But w/o the sudo password that is all they pratically can do

9:12 AM
names in that t-shirt represents what?

I never gave Linux a good chance to learn it, I would normally just use it to fix my Win/DOS system when it goes south. But I thought I would give this new Ubuntu release 14.04 a chance. But I will need Windows to fall back on.

@sammyg hmmm I did the same though a few years back.
I was a 3.1/95/98/ME/XP user.
I tried suse 4.6 (I think?) and had 2 demands: hassle free install, working hardware.

@AvinashRaj it's a joke about characterizations of lengths of beard.

suse 4.6 started with a list of ALL packages where I had to pick what I wanted to install (and I had to pick all the dependencies myself too)

It's unfortunate, but some things just don't work, or don't work as well on Linux as they do on Windows. One example is Netflix. I love Netflix, but it is based on M$ Silverlight.
Not that it can't work well on Linux. It's just that the big companies choose not to support it.

9:16 AM
so that went out the door quickly :=) the 1st Ubuntu though worked perfectly for me and that was when I made the switch. Now I mainly use Ubuntu (even at work :) )

there are people working on it. it's not our fault netflix sucks and doesn't use html5 instead of silverlight shrugs

@sammyg give it a bit of time

I read yesterday that there is new Ubuntu app for Netflix, based on WINE. That will give you Netflix at least on Ubuntu. Haven't explored that yet.

I have a new machine here I installed Ubuntu on. it has too new hardware so it took a lot of tinkering.
stay away from wine if you can ;-)
same as wubi: avoid it. Both will ruin your Ubuntu experience

@sammyg I'm more interested in the android app for set top boxes. That would more likely generate something usable natively.

9:18 AM
they are bandaids.

@Rinzwind Oh, no worries! I don't drink wine anyway. It's usually beer, so...

@sammyg coca cola for me :+) and the occasional mountain dew or tea

@Rinzwind Have a pepsi! ;)

my 70 year mom wants to start with internet so she gets to use Ubuntu 14. (never seen windows so I do not think it would be wise to show her 8.1). Gonna be fun though: all the kids from my stephdad side use windows and they alltold her to get windows 8)
@sammyg too much sugar >:D
1 kilo per bottle is enough

@Rinzwind Is this a hard figure?
I know pepsi is sweeter than coke, but that sounds a bit too much. :)
I always liked pepsi more than coke. I like the taste better.

9:26 AM
:=)

I used to drink a lot of pepsi and coke. I stopped drinking a few years ago. Now I only drink it on rare occasions.
e.g. when someone comes up to me and says "here, have a pepsi!" ;)

I don't drink soda... at all... never have.

@hbdgaf Why are Netflix and other such companies not using html5?

they can't assure content production companies and advertisers even more money.

9:33 AM
How's that?

it doesn't provide drm
so you have a harder time preventing saving and forcing ads

Because of lack of DRM?

yes
it's one of the main reasons flash and silverlight even exist.

Jesus Christ!... I thought DRM crap was all behind us...

nope...

9:36 AM
I read an article a while ago about DRM coming to HTML5. Haven't they given up on that idea yet?

nope. and html5 will have drm....
MS and Apple will push it through if the W3C does not allow it

it was a "that would be great" vs "that would be superfluous" argument since you ultimately have to have a significant portion in the browser, and there's no way to prevent someone from grabbing the chromium framebuffer. i have no idea how it will eventually resolve.

Although... companies will not have to use it, unless they want to...

@sammyg yeah well companies want to make money...

when sony releases a rootkit into the wild and thinks it's no big deal, you know drm isn't going away any time soon... yes, that was like a decade ago. if i did that, i would get arrested. a company does it, and it's all "our bad it made your optical drive un-usable by accident and cost you a $100 repair fee"

9:38 AM
(even canonical but they draw a line ;-) )

we got SO much business behind that rootkit. it was hilarious.

this is weird:

Q: hardware switch not functionning (ubuntu 14.04)

user271367I just installed lubuntu 14.04, all is nearly functionnal and i really love that OS. Though, the following issue bothers me : The hardware switch for wireless network is not working on this version. It used to be functionnal on lubuntu 12.04. It basically does nothing, while it should hardware-...

Well... that's that... that's what makes this world spin. Greed, money, cynicism, and power.

hardware switch has no relation to the OS?! it is what is says: it kills wifi by actuallly removing the connection

And sugar, of course! :D 1 kg per bottle of it! ;)

9:40 AM
@Rinzwind maybe a link to rfkill is in order?
i still say that should be installed by default... grumble grumble

@hbdgaf sure but still: this is this not -really- just hardware?!

if a new driver tells the firmware to disregard the hardware toggle, it reduces bug reports. which is a win for me. just make it soft-block and disallow hard blocking is a step forward.

the reason I drink cola is cuz of 2 reasons: 1 have 1 bad eye (the nerves behind the eye never developed) and I was once pushed against a concrete edge of a playground resulting in a severe double sided concussion)
after that I go so many migraines the doc adviced to start drinking coffee
I did not like coffee so changed that to coca cola :=D

yeah, if i don't get the obligatory two pots or more a day i get mind-blowing headaches. it's not just caffeine either. i tried substituting in caffeine pills to see if that was it, but i still got them. so it's something else in the coffee my body needs.

that and the occasional paracetamol keeps me getting headaches reguraly but once 1 or 2 times a year migraine (where I had it once every month or so)

9:44 AM
well glad you have it under some kind of control.

@Rinzwind Pepsi has more caffeine! :)

@sammyg does not taste as good :=)

low blood sugar can cause headaches too. lots of things can cause headaches, and we really have no idea what all of them are.

and I lost my front teeth due to a car crash so cola can't kill those

Haha! OK...
Well we all have our preferences... I guess. I will stop trying to make you switch to Pepsi! ;)

9:46 AM
:D :D
so marked for future proof

I'm will try make that Windows/Ubuntu dual boot.
See ya later!

bye!
going to catch up my weekly anime so bbl2

So @Rinzwind - you think there's a call for something that monitors ~/Download, moves to ~/Music, parses all mp3s, and auto-tags using echonest and acoustid?

10:30 AM
@Mitch thanks for checking the edit history on that flag.

10:49 AM
@hbdgaf You're welcome. What edit history? :)

@hbdgaf no :=)

Hi @Mitch!
Can you see my last flags?
...Because I can't understand how 3 of them was helpful

11:06 AM
anyone know if .directory (a type of .desktop for directories) files work, I can't seem to get them going
hm, maybe those are only for menus?
yeah, not what I or this guy thought they were for: askubuntu.com/questions/193577/…

@RaduRădeanu What flags are you talking about?

Last 3 helpful from here: askubuntu.com/users/flag-summary/147044
I can't understand how these was helpful
Or how these flags helped somehow
@Mitch Or what was the action if these was helpful

11:22 AM
I only processed one flag Mac mini (mid 2011) dual boot ubuntu 14.04 bluetooth problem, and yes it was helpful, since it is about keyboard and mouse. The others are still active.

@Mitch Ok, how that one was helpful? Wat was the action?

11:45 AM
Wish me luck. in 30 minutes my mom (nearing 70) and stepdad (nearing 80) are going on the internet for the 1st time. Oh and if the intenet crashes do not blame me!

@Rinzwind Wish you good luck and i home that everything will be OK with the internet (and not KO)! :)
...I hope (not home)

Dual booting Win 7 and Ubuntu now.
ubuntu boot
00.00.48.23 login
00:01:00.04 boot total
windows boot (first)
00:00:32.91 inconsistancy check
reboot
00:01:38.11 login
00:02:20.30 boot total (including reboot)

@RaduRădeanu I don't understand what you're asking?

windows boot (second)
00:00:37.09 login
00:00:45.86 boot total
Why did Win 7 do inconsistency check?
Why is Ubuntu slower at boot than Win 7?

@sammyg it probably loads a lot more. there is an analyzing tool called bootchart
it shows you what programs takes how long to load.

11:56 AM
I took time, from the moment I press power button (00:00:00), until I see the login screen (login), and then stopped when network was ready and all programs ready (boot total).

and there is.... bum (I think it is called?) that lets you disable services.

ok

if not needed turn of bluetooth
same for printers and scanners if cups or sane is loaded (prob. not)

bluetooth is not available on this computer

@Mitch If it was helpful, an action should be taken (aka: somebody from the operators should edit the tags again). If not, the status of the flag should be declined (not helpful as it is)

11:58 AM
there is no printer or scanner installed

cool

it's a desktop computer

mind you: comparing boot time between 2 os's might be possible timewise but impractable services wise.

@Rinzwind "boot sequence auditing" in software center?

you can also try top from command line to see if there is anything not worth starting
and then the biggest one: it might be your graphics card :+)
(the driver for graph cards work but are not as good as the windows version) :(
@mith I need a ruling!

A: How to run chromium as a root user in Ubuntu 12.04

RinzwindDISCLAIMER/Warning: Running anything as root is risky and you should not run any software as root when you don't have to. If you don't know what you're doing, or are on a system that needs to be secure, STOP READING NOW This is about this message: And you need to hex edit chromium: sudo apt-...

is this about chrome or chromium?
ok bbl1

12:20 PM
@Rinzwind
Your answer is right, you think about it?
I don't think about that as you think.

12:35 PM
is gksudo gedit /etc/hostname enough to edit in order to change computer name?
Do I need to edit /etc/hosts as well?
Also, is "sg-2" a legal name?
Hyphens are not allowed at the beginning and at the end. Correct?
So having it in the middle like that should not be a problem?
I recently installed Ubuntu and tried to set the computer name to "sg-2" during setup, and it complained about the name being used already.

yes you have to edit /etc/hosts also

I know "sg-1" is in use by another Windows pc on the network. But "sg-2" is not!
So why would it not set it? It's not a hyphen at the end or beginning.......
I opted for "sg2" instead and it worked. Now I have to edit it.......................

#!/bin/sh -e in a script represents what?

@AvinashRaj ok

what's the use of -e flag?

12:42 PM
@AvinashRaj The /etc/hosts file is completely empty here. So there is nothing to edit. Do I have to add the line sg-2 to it?
I'll try without changing that one and see if it works.
Also, is there no gui method to change computer name in Ubuntu?
ok, it now reads "@sg-2" in terminal
So I didn't have to edit /etc/hosts.
Only /etc/hostname.

12:59 PM
@lazyPower No issues on the misping, but you're misguided, Ask Ubuntu and the Ask Ubuntu chat room are both support mediums. you can give support here.

1:09 PM
@sammyg you have to give the hostname on /etc/hosts also. if you fail to do that then it shows Unresolvable hostname error.

@AvinashRaj Where does this apply? When using SSH only?
Also, why didn't the Ubuntu setup add anything to /etc/hosts to begin with? Why was it left empty by default?

not only for ssh
" Why was it left empty by default?"
No, it's not left empty by default.

@AvinashRaj I see it now! Sorry...
127.0.0.1	localhost
127.0.1.1	sg2

yep. Sorry?? no. You're always welcome.

1:23 PM
:)

:-)

But I swear, it was empty there for a moment... I mean when I issued edit /etc/hosts in terminal for the first time.
But that was maybe after I changed /etc/hostname and before I rebooted.
Don't know... but it was in fact showing up as a blank page in gedit.

On every reboot, ubuntu takes it's hostname from /etc/hostname file.

ok
It's corrected now, so anyway...
Thanks!

It's ok.

1:28 PM
@AvinashRaj There is no gui method for this?...
Like in Windows? Computer properties...

i think no.

@AvinashRaj Let's make it! ;)
So two different files need to be edited, through the terminal (mind you), to change the computer name...
I better start noting this down, because otherwise I will forget.

conflicting between the packages available in PPA's dpkg trying to overwrite error
solution for the above question is
sudo apt-get purge gnome-settings-daemon
sudo apt-get install -f

Are wireless keyboards encrypted by default in Ubuntu?

1:51 PM
while running xrandr on VBox guest, it shows min,max,current resolution as 640*480.
@Takkat

2:07 PM
@hbdgaf What about it?

2:24 PM
Just to verify, KRDC won't run on Ubuntu as it's a KDE application?
I have to use tsclient instead?

2:38 PM
tsclient is not even available in ubuntu software center
but krdc is
installed it, runs, doesn't connect to rdp server
host name resolution doesn't work at all
ip address does work
i get the username and password prompt
annoying kwallet prompt
but no desktop shows up
Remmina worked and it's included in ubuntu 14.04

Problems with Flash now!
I'm trying to watch some videos on Lynda.com at 720p HD.
Works fine when not in fullscreen, I enter fullscreen, works fine for 5 seconds, then the sound starts chopping.
I go down to 540p SD while still in fullscreen. It works for 7 seconds, then starts chopping again.
I drop to 360p SD, it works for 10 seconds, then starts chopping again.

Q: Very choppy Flash during fullscreen mode

Dang KhoaWhen I try to play Flash videos in full screen, sometimes - but not all the time, which makes this bug so aggravating! - the video gets very, VERY choppy, and UI controls do not really respond at all. Sound works fine. Disabling Compiz does nothing to alleviate the problem (switching to Ubuntu Cl...

Selected solution points to Flash-Aid: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-aid
"This add-on has been removed by its author."

I'm using Firefox 28.0 with Adobe flash plugin 11.2.
"MacOS and Linux flash plugins from Adobe are lacking GPU Acceleration, which is present in the Windows versions. Thus, decoding higher quality video tends to be choppy at times, even on high performance machines."
Is "gnash" the way to go? Does it support GPU acceleration?
installing gnash now
will i have to uninstall the adobe flash?

@Braiam Why did you link this question in your comment?

3:21 PM
@sammyg it's not related to linux performance. it's related to lynda.com not filling your buffer fast enough. it's a bandwidth problem, not a rendering problem.
if you're going to use flash. just use the restricted package that is real adobe flash. it's like being a meat eater or not. there are no half-measures with flash.

@Aditya because as you can see, I didn't found an apt question because it was tagged with only the toshiba tag.
OP didn't mention "toshiba" anywhere in his question askubuntu.com/posts/383804/revisions

@Braiam the derp was strong with that one...

@hbdgaf yeah... I presume he reinstalled, but I still leave my answer there since the views say that it's common

i viewed it, but when i saw multi-arch, i figured he had a ppa that had a non-standard version pinned or something.
Had you seen this? scs.stanford.edu/brop it's totally beast mode activated...

@Braiam Com'n most of the new users aren't aware of the system, different places have different tagging guidelines -- some prefer all the questions to have distro version tag, some prefer to append [SOLVED] once the question is solved. That is the reason why we get so many questions with only version tags. You need to give new users some room and edit the tags yourself..
I know I also made a couple of those mistakes myself (like appending SOLVED when the question was answered).. :)

3:29 PM
@Aditya I don't think he raged at them or anything. And he provided an answer. Everything looks fine from my seat.

@hbdgaf I know, but...

I might not have stripped out the version tag, but again. I don't talk about tagging. It's bad for my blood pressure if I do. Either way is fine with me.

I feel a question coming on.

@Greg just don't tag it with a version and you should be fine. JK

@jokerdino trying to work out what my "problem" is. I got into this mess by plugging headphones in.

3:36 PM
@jokerdino That would be the first question that I would ask then ;)

got to find ways to put a smile :)
@Greg what's the problem? Two search buttons in the search bar?

A: what is the differences between mysql-client and mysql-client-core?

@jokerdino hah, actually I didn't notice that :)

What do you think about it question and answer.

just sayin

3:39 PM
1) Plug in headphones during boot. 2) Notice there is no sound. 3) Reboot 4) Now there are no sound devices listed. 5) Faff around, sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio* && sudo apt-get install pulseaudio, 6) No settings in system settings... can't even change desktop background :/
I'm guessing that purge wasn't a good idea

@Aditya exactly, so I prefer not giving the opportunity of mistagging removing unuseful tags.

@Greg install the ubuntu-desktop meta package?

blindly installs packages ...

@Greg there's a pulse management command for that. i wish i could remember it... because it applies to so many more things it's not a package.

Good luck Greg.

3:41 PM
it's a command i found troubleshooting a game where i killed pulse and left it in an inconsistent state. i swear it will fix it.

@hbdgaf it fills it just fine with chrome

pulse -k ?

@jokerdino I love you.

i installed google chrome and the site works just fine

@Greg uh okay.

3:42 PM

@jokerdino that might be what i did, but it's a diff command to purge the pulse save state

@hbdgaf i also uninstalled the adobe flash, which just removed flash support from firefox
@hbdgaf and i installed gash

Now, back to the original problem...

@hbdgaf i am not too sure about the command but I can get what you were saying.

@hbdgaf what does gash bring to the plate? it doesn't work with firefox?

3:43 PM
probably Takkat is the man to go for anything pulseaudio.

sorry, is there a package called gash?

i have 100 Mbps downstream WAN

*gnash

@sammyg gnash never worked

so streaming and bandwidth should not be an issue

3:44 PM
@hbdgaf pavucontrol?
@Greg do you have alsa installed?

@hbdgaf roger that! removing gnash

@Braiam nope. i did something somewhere totally outside of a gui to tell pulse to forget everything. i totally wish i could remember. if it helps i was troubleshooting doom3 breaking my soundsystem because i killed pulse.

@Braiam yes. I can see my devices in the alsamixer, and sound is now working, although I can't use the ubuntu sound controls as they are not there in the indicator panel.
laptop volume control isn't working either.
ears damaged from speaker-test (wearing headphones)

@Greg maybe you removed the PA to ALSA module

@Braiam could you help me check?

3:47 PM
Does Chromium have the Pepper API and flash?
Or is that Chrome only?

use flash or don't. it's NOT your PC. it's lynda.com
/discussion

@hbdgaf what?

@sammyg stop trying to find ways to install other flash engines. just install vanilla flash. it works. if you have problems, it's the server or your isp not your box.
unless you're running a raspi or something... then flash might just not be fast enough... but then the answer is get bigger gear or don't depend on flash.

My laptop is down on it's last pair of legs... Anyone got suggestions for a new laptop?

this is my daily driver walmart.com/ip/…

3:52 PM
@hbdgaf will it work with firefox?

@blade19899 I can heartily recommend my laptop. It's a Samsung np900x4c, had it a couple of years, perfect Ubuntu experience, and quite a nice bit of kit too.

i don't mind using chrome, and i know lynda.com works in chrome, 720p fullscreen, not a problem, no chopping...
only chops in firefox
with adobe flash

then file a bug against firefox... not flash.
pepper support is discontinued anyway... so installing it is like eating stale bread until you die from mold poisoning...

dat metaphor

ok

3:54 PM
i have my moments. and it was a simile, not a metaphor

lies

;) if it uses like or as, it's a simile. water is force is a metaphor. water is like force is a simile.

Being a (pathetic) literary student, he is right. It is indeed a simile.
Using as or like gives the simile away.

beat you to it...

Nooo. You are A. King.

3:58 PM
<.< after a fashion i suppose.

I salute your lexicism.

O_O

Might as well do it right.

@Greg Nice. Although i need one with a bit more graphics power.

@blade19899 Yeah, it's not very strong when it comes to graphics. Not bad, but not great.

3:59 PM
Just saying youtube.com/watch?v=s95FrUrgHHY okay, not really...

@blade19899 What is your primary usage?
