i see skull and bones when i look at it.

this needs to be closed as no reproducible askubuntu.com/q/450101/169736

@hbdgaf this laptop copes well with Portal, played that all the way though on here.

i solved the above question.
@Braiam

@Greg portal just wasn't my thing. i get people that like it, but it's not for me.

@hbdgaf I meant in therms of 3d capability, the laptop was fine.

@AvinashRaj actually he just figured that he needs to change server

4:04 PM
@Greg For school, i need to do allot of virtualbox assignments

@Greg makes sense

choose best server from software and updates and then try again.Did you try askubuntu.com/questions/450101/… ? — Avinash Raj 7 hours ago
@AvinashRaj I solved the problem after setting the different server for updates (Main server). — Ventsislav Marinov 22 mins ago

My internet is laggyy as f**k be back latter

@blade19899 at least they don't want you to install vmware trial a dozen times...

4:04 PM
@blade19899 Virtualbox is in my daily toolbox, use it non-stop most of the day in a separate workspace.

@Greg In virtualbox i have to used sometimes several at once, Server 2008, Ubuntu. Alao redhat, windows7, windows8,

@blade19899 simultaneously, I think that would fry this laptop :)

I want to try out ms sql server latest from dreamspark, but i can't remember my .edu login any more...

i already had 4 vm in my vbox.now i want to install a newer version.Does the VM's still exists after installing the newer version of vbox?

4:07 PM
@Greg Not all of them. Mostly two. But other os, i have used, are the one above mentioned.
FreeNAS, FreeBSD. So, the needed 'power' varies from OS to OS

running more than 2 VMs crushes my lappie. i don't run windows at all though beyond server distributions i'm toying with.

Yeah, I think something like Windows 8 would noticeably slow down the machine. Don't think it would cope with multiple VMs.

I have 4 GB ram, and i5, i can do two virtal machines at once

i have 8 GB ram and i7 , i can do 4 VM's at once.

@AvinashRaj please teach me with "my answer is good?".

you do realize that if you could symmetrically divide the entry point i7 of 2GHz at 4 it would be 500MHz each... so no. Just saying I have an i7 is what you do for bragging not benchmarking...

@AvinashRaj You are great user with many experiences in askubuntu

@AvinashRaj Oh, about my answer, no question.
@AvinashRaj Oh, Now I understand you. Thank you very much.

4:17 PM
This is an empty package that depends on the current "best" version of
mysql-server (currently mysql-server-5.5), as determined by the MySQL
maintainers.(mysql server)
This package includes the server binaries but doesn't contain all the
infrastructure needed to setup system databases.(mysql-server-core)
@xiaodongjie ^^

@AvinashRaj Oh, yes. Thank you to your wonderful help!

A: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name?

RinzwindThis is just a friendly warning and not really a problem (as in that something does not work). If you insert a ServerName localhost in either httpd.conf or apache2.conf in /etc/apache2 and restart apache the notice will disappear. If you have a name inside /etc/hostname you can also use...

Q: Putting Ubuntu on a Tablet Without USB

user271547I recently purchased an ASUS VivoTab Windows 8.1 tablet and, being the Linux enthusiast that I am, decided to install Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, there are no USB or DVD drives, so I don't know what I'm supposed to install Ubuntu off of. I've already tried to format a MicroSD like an Ubuntu Live...

not gonna happen ....

Anyone got any idea how to "solve" these dependencies?
(trying to get minitube to play videos on 14.04)

@AvinashRaj why you don't flag about askubuntu.com/a/451487/202806

braiam!!! good day
I got a great answer badge today! I overtook izx just now for 3rd place. My mom is currenty web-enabled (and typing like crazy searching the web :D )
Now if Ajax was not making a mess of the cup final all would be great

hey guys. How can I find out if my web browser (14.04) has the correct plugins to view all the contents on a website?

@mojo706 where? :-)

under /etc/apache/ in 14.04

@Braiam hahaha

5:52 PM
@Braiam t f**k 0_o

@Rinzwind nvm I found an answer
anyone here use PredictionIO?

not me :)

you know of it?
@Rinzwind ever used mahout or some prediction service?

no

anyone here use sublime? I'm tired of gedit and eclipse.

5:59 PM
eclipse is too complex for just ordinary programming and gedit is just no (for me)

I used it a while back but not a fan of it.
I use aptana for coding

Nothing wrong with eclipse, just overkill for simple scripts. gedit doesn't have the same feel as textmate on osx does. wondering if sublime fills the void

aptana is like eclipse

@mojo706 yes
it is an extension probably?

I use it for Python
very good for php too

6:01 PM
Hi
guys.

at work I used to use xp now ubuntu. I might give sublime another try.
can sublime debug remote sites?

like eclipse, sublime runs on windows, linux and mac. That is what interested me about it

hey @xiaodongjie huan jing (?)

I use linux at home, mac at work, and windows at school
i need something that works well in all 3 environments

@Rinzwind 我的?

@mojo706 sorry. please retell me.

@xiaodongjie nvm how may I be of service?

@mojo706 upstart or systemd?

@mojo706 about LOCO team.
@Rinzwind about LOCO team, please teach me, you can see above my questions in this room.

@Rinzwind oh, I see.

it can be difficult :)

@Rinzwind umm? why?

@Rinzwind I'm confused

lots of things you need to do ;)

6:22 PM
@mojo706 why you are confused?

@mojo706 service.... upstart .... systemd? :=)

@Rinzwind oh, do you have been registered a LOCO team?

Guys very urgent git crash on ubuntu 14.04 server. Anyone familiar with git. Giving 250 bounty reps for resolving problem. stackoverflow.com/questions/23159417/…

@xiaodongjie no the dutch team was set up a long time ago ;)

yeah, ajax has been around for a long time

6:24 PM
@Rinzwind I get it now

@jokerdino dutch LOCO team :(

@Rinzwind oh, I see. I'll try it. To create a new LOCO Team for chinese and korean.

@Rinzwind what team'll get this cup?

ok he's talking of football

that being "a long time" compared to the coding language :=)
back to the food preparing :=0
ha fossy has arrived

6:41 PM
@fossfreedom it shows like this,

@AvinashRaj - dont forget to go into the terminal preferences and set the transparency

you mean transparent background.

... and I'll add that to the answer for those that didnt already know about that terminal option
yep

plz add it for noobs like me.

@AvinashRaj - no way do I call you a noob!

6:46 PM
yeh, just for fun.

@AvinashRaj nice laptop

@AvinashRaj there you go ... askubuntu.com/a/451551/14356

how do i get the system info and others on the left side of the screen?

I think that is probably conky on darent's screen

6:52 PM
like in the screenshots posted on that question.
did i have to install nvidia proprietary drivers for that?

post a comment under the question - hopefully darent will share the conky script he is using.
I doubt that nvidia drivers are needed for conky

also @AvinashRaj to not get bored with your terminal (if you spend a lot of time on it) install zsh or ohmyzsh

is that zsh is better than bash?
@fossfreedom i already asked him, he says that there are many scripts available on the internet to get that kinda infos on the screen so please make a search.

@fossfreedom cant we make that a rule? "if asking about conky supply your conky setup"

i deleted the comments under that question. You mod can view the deleted comments :-)

6:58 PM
@Rinzwind my head hurts with all the meta rules currently in place ... please not another one - I'll explode! :P

ok :D

@AvinashRaj depends what your needs are

can i use bash and zsh on the same system?

@AvinashRaj yes

7:01 PM
@AvinashRaj yeah
to change just run bash or zsh and done

@AvinashRaj Idk

@AvinashRaj if you type zsh is will use zsh and exit will leave it same with bash

but i think the commands would differ.

@AvinashRaj they will
but not all :=)

@Rinzwind what shell do you use?

7:03 PM
Installing zsh .....
4

@AvinashRaj I * that

@mojo706 bash mostly. but at work I use different shells. csh is the 3rd not mentioned here

c shell?

also the old bash I use fairly (sh)
@mojo706 yes
comes standard with SCO (with sh and zsh)

7:06 PM
@Rinzwind wow thats pretty old

@mojo706 yeah. well SCO is still around even though it was pronounced dead 5 times or so

@Rinzwind I've never actually use any of the two but I've seen someone use. I was impressed but not enough to learn them, bash was enough of a task for me :)

does this command
sudo apt-get -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" install --reinstall <package-name>
works only for missing config files?

Q: Weired symbol on gnome-terminal profile preferences Window

Avinash RajStrange symbol appears on the gnome-terminal's profile preferences window. Is this a bug? Is that possible to get the symbol out?

@AvinashRaj I'm sure I saw the same question in the last couple of days - can't find it though.

wow.

There should be "" marks there
Idk I'm on 14.04 too

yep, then delete mine.

7:28 PM
leave it be - those searching will be redirected correctly

i got that rectangle symbol ony on terminal profile preferences window.

I dont see that - it is definitely something to do with the "" marks
maybe a locale issue

yes ^^

""" marks?? where are they?

the title bar should saying something like Editing Profile "Default"

7:32 PM
hi foosfreedom could you remove the comments here askubuntu.com/questions/450048/… now that it is solved?

@WildMan tidied - nice answer BTW

mm... what a problem... this edit corrects the answer askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/250727

thanks fossfreedom.

@fossfreedom this one askubuntu.com/a/451322/202806 also

7:37 PM
@Braiam Stop removing the keyboard tag.

@Seth why?

@AvinashRaj if I had 2 TB it would be 500 GB (very very generous cause of work) Windows and 1.5 TB Ubuntu

Because the discussion on meta hasn't finished and I just told you to.
People on meta have so far shown that they disagree with you, and you shouldn't be removing it until it is decided.

@Seth then can you tell Radu to stop staking me and rolling back each of my edits
if you don't, I will rise this to higher instances

7:40 PM
@mojo706 IMO 100 GB for Ubuntu and 100 GB for windows would be enough.

@Braiam That isn't any of your business, but it will be taken care of. You are getting unconstructive. Flags should be used for that.

@Seth he rolls back when I add xorg tag when it's appropiated
tell me where is that unconstructive?

@AvinashRaj there is a bunch of pictures in that comment list - anything there that you can slap straight into the answer that will help others to understand it in the future?

No no, you are continuing to begin edit wars instead of letting it go and dealing with it constructively (meta and flags)

wait foss, the one (gparted screenshot)

7:42 PM
@Seth I'm sure there hasn't been a rollback war that I have started. I'm checking some tags, and when I refresh the page I find that the correction I applied was reverted

And you make it again. That is starting a rollback war and you know it.

now delete all the comments.
Going to sleep ...
bye BBT :-) it's around 1 AM.

@Seth because my edit was completely valid and warranted. How would you feel that you are constructing a house and someone at night remove all nails you put? That's how I feel

@AvinashRaj goodnight man

@Braiam No, not all of them are.
I think you should take a break for a bit and start listening to what the community says.
I'm really running out of patience, so please take this to heart and start listening.
I do agree we should remove lid and rename though.

7:47 PM
bbl

@Seth rename is a perl command, actually

yeah, but questions about it should use right?
Why did you remove the window manager tag from this question?
Seems warranted to me.

> A window manager is the software component responsible for the tracking and placement of windows within a graphical interface. Examples: Metacity, Compiz, KWin. If your question is about an specific window manager use that instead.
compiz is a window manager already
is redundant including it

Ah, that makes sense.

window manager should be used when either, you don't know the window manager you use or the tag doesn't exist

7:52 PM
@Seth rename.ul is the normale rename ;-)

hm?

@Braiam I approved that edit :=)

@Rinzwind I know, I was adapting the tag excerpt to the usage

rename is a perl command. we/ubuntu also has rename.ul (that is the normal one):
Usage:
rename.ul [options] expression replacement file...

Options:
-v, --verbose explain what is being done
-V, --version output version information and exit
-h, --help display this help and exit

was ambiguous in that part, tho

7:53 PM
on redhat rename is our rename.ul :+)
or did I misread your post about rename?

huh?

that was for seth :=)
but you had to post in between :P

ah, doesn't make a good tag though.
