Q: What do we do with (very) long answers, filled with off-topic story-telling?

Jacob VlijmEvery single person has his or her own style of writing, however, every now and then you run into an (mostly) answer with issues beyond styling. The poster seems to have a completely wrong concept in mind on how to answer a question. His or her personal live passes by, mother in law, cat , dog an...

Q: xserver-common-lts-saucy :O

TerhoI just installed Ubuntu (12.04.4) and I upgraded to 13.10 I have no idea how to fix this :/ $ sudo apt-get install -f Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: xserver-common-lts-saucy 0 upgraded, 0...

what the heck with that title?
btw, could this question being duplicated backwards? askubuntu.com/q/384694/169736

oh, I didn't read the entire transcript.

I was wondering since 14.04 has been released why are questions being put on hold because of development version?

Apr 17 at 19:12, by fossfreedom
hey guys - this is going to be a busy few days. If you see a question that says "I've upgraded and something has stopped working" ... that is usually a sign of a bug. Please point the OP towards filing a bug report and lets close the question - flag away if you dont have close votes. Thanks.
that 14.04 is released, doesn't means there are no bugs

thanks Briaiam

8:06 PM
@WildMan bugs are still offtopic and lots of q's are bugs

@Seth can you invert this duplicated? askubuntu.com/q/384694/169736, it has better views

It just something I have to get use to because in the forum we try to find workarounds for bugs concerning networking issues and many others as well even though they are bugs. Thank you

yeah, well, if we do, we would be drown in Q's that has no solution that we can give

that does happen sometimes

on the forums you should close those against bugzilla ;-) saves a lot of trouble

8:18 PM
its amazing the amount of information you can find on the internet. The sheer amount is overwhelming

There networking at least we try to solve or find a workaround for all issues that is what makes troubleshooting fun, but if I get stuck I ask chili555 for help.

@mojo706 tell that to my mother >:D

@Rinzwind did she discover the internet recently? or is she a sceptic?

@mojo706 she started today >:)

@WildMan SE engine doesn't work very well for troubleshooting questions

8:20 PM
@Rinzwind haha she can't stop searching?

@mojo706 nope luckily she is sticking to dutch websites. almost 70 years _O-

Where can I talk to a mod privately?

its not that hard to get 20 rep :P

Yaay, first time creating a room :D

they were really desperate to search in yahoo.

8:31 PM

@Rinzwind lol

@Rinzwind lol, no. You my brother from another mother.

nooooooooooooo :*(

@blade19899 yeah, well, in the context it doesn't fit. They were misreading DVD which was vertialy
too broad/opinion based askubuntu.com/questions/1242/…

8:37 PM

Took me ages to find this one

happy eastern :)

HAHAH

@mojo706 if I had the same problem that you have, what would be your first question in case you will help me?

8:46 PM
@Braiam what is the error?

BINGO!
if you want our help, you have to help us understanding your problem
you can't wait for us to extract all the pertinent information ;)

@Braiam sorry. Here's the paste paste.ubuntu.com/7294327
as you can see it said it has dependencies so I did as instructed. The next paste is long

A: Windows Installing PHPUnit via PEAR - Installing PHPUnit via PEAR

EricI'm a really newbie but hope to be of any help. I just succeeded installing PHPUnit a moment ago. My env. is Wamp2.1. I don't know exactly how this works but it worked for me, so try this. pear clear-cache then, pear install -a -f phpunit/PHPUnit Somewhere in the failing message, I saw som...

@Braiam :( no help. same error could this be a problem in php 5.5? This seems a standard quote in the error "could not extract the package.xml file from "/build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download"

9:12 PM
@Braiam should I just ask a question on Ask?

@mojo706 I would try on SO instead, php tag here doesn't have too much traffic

ok thanks

@mojo706 in a VM it installed ok

vm running 14.04?

13.04, I'm try debian now

9:21 PM
I'm on 14.04
php 5.5.9

don't worry, debian is 5.5.11

ok

debian was successful, so is an Ubuntu thingy

wtf :(
how do I tell my pear version?

apt-cache policy php-pear?

9:36 PM
no
php-pear:
Installed: 5.5.9+dfsg-1ubuntu4
Candidate: 5.5.9+dfsg-1ubuntu4

9:49 PM
5.5.11 here

I am going to cry ;__;

Is there a way to enable Numlock at boot time? It's enabled in BIOS but it gets disabled by GRUB (I think) because it's not working when I boot Windows 7 either (dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7). Normally, with Windows 7 as the only OS, numlock is enabled at login screen.
Why is GRUB / Ubuntu / Linux / whichever... not respecting my BIOS settings?

@sammyg you are one of the other victims of grub...

And this thing called numlockx is only for enabling Numlock at login for Ubuntu, right? It doesn't solve the same problem I have for when I pick to boot Windows 7 from GRUB list?

and no, there's no way

9:57 PM
o/

@Braiam Are you saying I have to update to a newer version of grub?
Will these instructions solve my problem?

@sammyg no, I'm saying to give up...
I reported that back in the 2000's and nobody cared :(

@Braiam =O omg...
@Braiam No one took care of that?... but you are saying that this is a known problem with grub?
It's just that no one gives a f* to fix it?
sudo apt-get install numlockx
sudo sed -i 's|^exit 0.*$|# Numlock enable\n[ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ] \&\& numlockx on\n\nexit 0|' /etc/rc.local
Will this get me anywhere near a working Numlock? At least at login?
I would prefer to have it on by default all the time, login or not, who cares...
I always punch in numbers with the number pad, and I'm super fast at it. I'm completely crippled when I am forced to use the top row number keys.
So if I am going to use Linux I will have to get used to using top row number keys... great...

Q: How do I correctly use dpkg-divert in preinst and postrm scripts?

jl6I am building a package which overrides an existing file provided by another package, so I want to use dpkg-divert to add a diversion. I tried adding the diversion in the preinst script, and removing the diversion in the postrm script, and that seemed to work when installing the package and then ...

is php-pear different from pear?

10:34 PM
I'm going to bed before I throw this computer out of this window

@Braiam "Before upgrading your system to a new Ubuntu release (i.e. from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10), you should probably run ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 first..." oops

10:47 PM
@Andrew tell me why I'm not surprised

@Braiam Dahh, I don't know. Because I didn't read it!
@Braiam I did found it when I reinstalled.... and readding the repo to get gnome shell 3.12

ok I cant go to bed. I need pear to work normally

@mojo706 BYE

@Andrew what? I'm not leaving

10:52 PM
@Andrew why are you using the ppa anyways?

@Braiam more updated, than the deflat

what?
what version is in the PPA's vs repositories?
only gnome-terminal and empathy are in the ppa vs repositories launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/…
clutter is newer in the repositories

Gnome-Shell 3.12
How do I get Gnome Software

@Andrew its going to take a few weeks/months before that PPA contains the majority of the gnome 3.12 release. You just need to have a little bit of patience.

@Andrew if you like so much the latest, I recommend you using arch or debian sid

10:58 PM
@Braiam Tryed Arch... hated it, community is bad. Manjaro is junk.

heh. well, arch has one of the best documentations of all distro's, I think that you should read it before asking for support

@Braiam I don't understand it.

the documentation?

@Braiam I had too many problems and .... They just said here the page for the wiki
That and It doen't work

and you tried anything of the wiki?
what they don't like is hand holding each and every user, they found that that doesn't work and tired them out

11:02 PM
Yes like this one time for my netbook, there was no sound, me and my brother tryed to trobleshoot it, didn't work with the wiki, ask the community, and all they just said was here is the link to the wiki, told them it didn't work, and they said try harder, try again.

yep - Arch is definitely not newbie friendly - only for those that love to tinker and understand more than just the basics.

@fossfreedom I understand petty well the Debian system, but arch is like totally difference.
BRB going to reboot

@Andrew this is more of a general counsel: I will recommend you never tell "doesn't work" when asking for help; try to always describe your problem with the minute detail, what you tried, what was the result, what's the goal, other relevant information
the more relevant information have your post, the better.

@Braiam I told them the sound card info like the name the modle...

BEHOLD! LP has spam waves!
@Andrew and pulse/alsa configurations?
name of modules, the output of certain tools?

11:09 PM
@Braiam I know that... but I did try both, it wasn't reading it.
@Braiam What do you mean the spam waves

user271684I HAVE WINDOWS 7 64 BIT ON MY LAPTOP AND HAVE JUST INSTALLED UBUNTU 14.04 IS THERE A WAY TO IMPORT MY BOOKMARKS FROM MY WINDOWS FIREFOX AND INTEGRATE INTO MY UBUNTU FIREFOX WEB BROWSER I COULD NOT FIND ANYWAY TO IMPORT BOOKMARKS FROM WINDOWS I HAVE NO OTHER DETAILS AVAILABLE.

NOOB

@hexafraction hello

Hello

@hexafraction either you're confused about which device is which, or the driver is. that's how i read it...

@hbdgaf No, both devices are hard-blocked, and one should not be.

11:39 PM
@hexafraction did that happen in 13.10?

@Braiam This machine is getting Ubuntu for the first time. No other machine I've used had such a setup

and in the live environment?

This is the live environment. I'd like to ensure everything works before I install.

yeah, i was seeing rfkill only thinking one was hard-blocked. if you're saying it doesn't look hardblocked, but it is, then the second half of the either or kicks in...

I'm sure of the driver. I've used rtl8187 with it on Backtrack.

11:43 PM
i'ld just unblock the hardblock and use things as normal. forget the whole "it's too inconvenient to press a button" bit.
also, long time no see obssessivefoss
ever finish the arm wrestling thing?

This card has no hard-block. The other one does. That one is not usable at my school's grounds due to crap signal and hundreds of other users sharing the link
And unfortunately I abandoned it after I did more research into servo availability :P
I'll try wicd

Well. That sucks. And I was saying unblock both cards so you can use the one and only use the soft-blocking on the linux side.

@hexafraction rfkill unblock all FTW!

I'm just not sure why hard-blocking one would hard-block an unrelated one...

and wicd is dead

11:46 PM
Actually wicd is the only non-dead thing, it seems to be working.

@hexafraction Because maybe the driver is confused... see my very first stab at it. It shouldn't fix it, but it might.

The drivers? Two different cards. I'll try it.
Hmm, I guess wicd has worked. I'll use that, then.
And the final test, pulling the ethernet I;ve been using as an interim

derp. it wasn't hardblocked if wicd used it...

network-manager decided it was, rfkill decided it was...

 Latest version is 1.7.2.4
    wicd-1.7.2.4.tar.gz
released on 2012-04-30

11:48 PM
no it didn't. can't say on nm, but rfkill said CLEARLY that one of two was hardblocked...

I guess that works. I'll leave the question up to see if it can be better addressed.
Hmm, let me look at the 15 times I've invoked rfkill...
Not even sure then. I remember it reporting it having both hardblocked at one time...
I guess too localized then.

Yes, I know I pasted that in, I'm 100% sure they both were hard-blocked.

<.< so you see where the communication went all sideways now?

suppose we are not that young anymore :P

11:52 PM
Ah, yes. I'll be installing now, I guess.

which DE are you looking at using?

Unity for now.

i'm on xfce. the kde plunge seems like it will happen eventually, but i don't really want to start over on the making every little widget i use work with the native gui toolkit

Ah, OK. I used xfce on one of my crappier machines. I just jumped onto Tahr on this one as it's the first version that would actually boot with graphics without the use of nomodeset and 800x600 video

unrelated: there's a spider floating around my house somewhere and it's kicking my butt with the strike hard and fade away three bites at a time while i sleep thing ;)
@hexafraction i use xfce not because the lappie won't run unity well, but because i like it better.
sorry about the lack of servo availability...

11:56 PM
Unity seems to be better for me to dance between windows quickly.

maybe. alt-tab works fine for me

mm... yeah, works for me too

@hbdgaf ah, man. that sucks.

True...

ctl alt arrow also works fine. i don't touch the mouse until i really need to, so.... i guess for 6 instances of a given app, quicklists or whatever could be helpful.

11:58 PM
meh, my screen is so small that I only need to switch windows and tabs

i thought small screens was a reason to use desktops instead of windows... anyway, i can keep my stuff organized without quicklists.
