6:00 PM
first we start with the blog

yeah link us.... I am due for a good laugh

No OSS4?

6:02 PM
there is more hidden in what happened before the release, but we should know about that :)
oh yeah, no OSS4

Nice one @RolandTaylor.

@JamesGifford >:)

@JoshuaRobison how is a live CD faster than a normal install?

when I'm in a bad mood like I was when I wrote that is when I'm realllllllllllllllly hilarious

@JoshuaRobison it is a matter of your USB sticks read/write speed

6:05 PM
@OctavianDamiean I started out with a liveCD on my USB stick
It was great but I ran out of space so I put a full install on the same USB stick
This current install is very noticeably slower. Windows often freeze for short periods of time and turn a cool blue color.

phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTI5Nw "Expect more exciting work soon" - so I'm guessing we finally get that F for FAIL icon?

Despite the cool desaturated tinting during a freezup... I still prefer faster performance. :p

everytime @RolandTaylor gets hilarious it potentially harms kittens (okay that’s just going too far!).

I couldn't resist

6:11 PM
@failbadp well, I don't think the questions are good is the problem

@RolandTaylor: Skype is back!!!!!

Three monitors supported on NVIDIA card? http://bit.ly/hZCgkP #xorg

@StefanoPalazzo did you register on stackapps?

@GeorgeEdison.... why??

I don't know why... they just finally released a new version.

6:19 PM
no i mean why did you mention it again...

'Cuz I just noticed it myself.

Just realized that I'm going to have no excuse to give my Windows friends on why I can't use Skype right now.... D:

it is like we are shoving it in his face "hey @RolandTaylor they released a new version of skype and it is just as useless as the previous version"

It is? It works fine for me.

I don't know, that is what Roland keeps telling us...
I don't have it installed myself

6:22 PM
@RolandTaylor: Is it better...? Worse...?

@JorgeCastro I didn't make a post about it, but you need to request an API key, and if you do, they track this kind of thing for you

oh
so basically, we're legit now is what you're saying?

@GeorgeEdison after reading the comments on the forum, I didn't bother to install it
it's unstable enough as it is

@JorgeCastro we were legit since we left google (:

6:25 PM
in fact - let me try it now - if this hoses my system then skype owes me

the SE people make it really easy, and you get 10,000 reqs per day, more than enough for any app

perfect
hey did you read my bug on setglobal?

that was for @RolandTaylor

@JorgeCastro yeah, it's really unfortunate
but I'll try to play around with delays and things before disabling it outright, see if I can work around it

6:30 PM
@TheX wow
nice

@StefanoPalazzo I have found that the keyboard shortcut helps me better
I just need to remember super-u-thentype
instead of super-type
@StefanoPalazzo I will of course keep bugging Mikkel to fix it for real

@JorgeCastro sounds good :)
I'm playing around with natural language analysis atm, to figure out if I can improve search results somehow (read: I'm playing)

heh
did blekko end up being slower?

@JorgeCastro I haven't made a prototype implementation yet, after discovering that each query takes two seconds, it went to the bottom of my priority-list

heh
hey so, another reason I started using the kb shortcut instead of the dash
in the lens itself we default to horizontal view
but the normal dash gets you the dumb icon view

6:35 PM
David Callé was quite helpful, he said he's going to ping me when he's read the Terms of service, that's going to be interesting too

oh also I made a merge proposal to rename it to a more friendly "Ask Ubuntu" like it's on the site

@JorgeCastro true, but I was kind of excited about showing a link to ask ubuntu, when the user types "au", "askubuntu", "chat" or "meta"
Looks like I'll have to make a separate .place for this feature (should be possible though)

it's ok, many lenses ftw.
oh, I also found a way to make it faster
so by default we search "Everything"
change it to "Questions" and try it

@RolandTaylor just thought you might like to see how nifty your blog looked on me iPad

mine was way faster since (obviously) it wasn't searching for as much

6:38 PM
@TheX that's not mine :D

I thought it was?

@JorgeCastro I'm aware of that, but I'm working at a solution that should improve the speed much more, about 50×

mine is 2buntu, that one is 2ubuntu

Unfortunately, that requires me to come up with a solution for the stale cache problem (big important unsolved problem in computer science), ;-)

@StefanoPalazzo oooh
@StefanoPalazzo right because an unfortunate side effect is I type
and it finds stuff
then it kind of sputters a bit reorganizing the questions

6:40 PM
yes, that's caused by the network-lag
I'm doing a lot of whiteboard writing and theory, so it'll take a few days before I can show any results, but this should get rid of all of these problems

Oh nevermind, typed the url in wrong...
just imagine your blog looking like that then @RolandTaylor

@StefanoPalazzo heh ok

@StefanoPalazzo should I find someone to fix the icon?
make it look more lensish?

@JorgeCastro If you could find someone, that would be absolutely awesome; we need all new icons for everything (pretty much)

6:43 PM
ah

We get used to them, but if you sit back, you'll see they're all wrong. Like, for instance the tags icon (which is "tag-add"), totally the wrong metaphor

yeah

The getting-things-gnome guys may also take offence at me abusing their icon for the questions group, heh
So, if you could find someone who's willing to help out with icons, that's be a massive boon

This room has plenty of epic GIMP skillz0rs

I lol at gimp...
but it lolz at me too...
so it is mutual...

6:47 PM
hides and uninstalls all graphics apps

if you want a real grappics app get Inkscape :D

7:06 PM
I use inkscape too :) (as well as GIMP, pinta, GNU Paint, etc)

morning

hi
yay the US Government is going defunct and wants to shut down.... that will help for sure!

7:22 PM
=)
did they install Skype 2.2?

@RolandTaylor yup.

figured
it no longer launchers from my messaging menu
I had to use the terminal

wait, it HAD a messaging menu entry??!
:O
I didn't think it was that advanced!!

mine did

huh. mine doesn't. 11.04. Probably can't handle some API or something. lol.

7:24 PM
@RolandTaylor no they don't use open source software... that would require them to make a decision...

@TheX :D
I know
@JamesGifford I might have made it so then
I forgot

I know how easy it is to make it appear in there... I just used the Pidgin plugin though, so it's all good. :)

(by some arbitrary measure that doesn't offend the people asking them, I hope :-)

nice. boring questions indeed. lol.

7:26 PM
wow I couldn't spend even a full minute on that page

what's that phenomenon called, where talking about the values changes them?
:-)

lol stef

Hi all!
Apparently I have 2 broken packages, how do I find these?

open synaptic and click custom then go to broken
in fact once you open it it will tell you

i noticed that :D

7:35 PM
@RolandTaylor i miss the watermelon cat

man, I can't upgrade/fix the packages! LOL

@GeorgeEdison are you around?

@StefanoPalazzo: Yup.

@lazyPower He shall soon return :D

7:40 PM
@GeorgeEdison in the API, do you know how I can find if a question has been merged, using the /questions method?

@RolandTaylor woooooooooooow, big care...

there isn't a "merged_date" key

@StefanoPalazzo I'll check.

when is natty due again? :O

@Alvar lol

7:41 PM
@RolandTaylor even the new version is outdated :D
is icq still beeing developed?

you know that the 2.2 beta, is actually the rc for 5 right?

I just tried it, and I hardly even noticed a change

ICQ stil llives

ICQ =

coool

wow... really?

never used it really

i thought it died a horrible death after AOL acquired them

I don't know why anyone ever want to use ICQ... but it is there

7:42 PM
above image is ICQ

if i mremmeber right they eventually bought themselves back...

this is for you @RolandTaylor

I joined to talk to battleswarm player once - and all I got was spam once I signed in

@TheX Where is the linux version? there should really be just one or two versions 1 linux 2 android! :D

omg
@lazyPower ewww

7:44 PM
Linux ICQ = Pidgin/Empathy

@TheX LOL
@TheX if you are a geek you want something nerdy, well I just have to sue google chat then :D

@StefanoPalazzo: Hmmm... I can't find anything.

why sue google chat??? they mantra is "don't be evil"

Q: Merging/migration should be reflected by the API

Maxim ZaslavskyNow that we have a new merging/migration system that keeps records of all merges, I think that this information should be visible through the API: Questions that are merged into other questions should return some sort of a merge parameter for most requests Answers for the questions that are mer...

ICQ is amazing to me, cause it's actually worse than yahoo

7:46 PM
ICQ looks like "you know what" messenger with a different style (icons, font)

@GeorgeEdison ah I see, thanks a lot :-)

Trillian is the worse multi-protocol client ever!
According to security analyst Jeffrey Carr, use of ICQ may cause security problems because it was purchased by Russian investment company Digital Sky Technologies. ICQ has fallen out of fashion in US and Britain, but it remains popular in eastern Europe and Russia. Carr says the new ownership may be used by Russia's powerful secret service, the FSB (formerly the KGB) since Russian law requires ICQ to open its logs "whenever the spooks want".[4]

laaaame is what it is...

@RolandTaylor lol

7:50 PM
:)
Trillian required me to sign up for their special service just to sign into msn etc...
it never did work anyway - so I pulled the lever and the rest is history

@TheX Sorry spelled wrong LOL I meant "use". Sorry.

I gtg now guys ^^
thanks for the lols :D

now for the serious discussion?

@MarcoCeppi yay, can I have one?

@ajmitch Sure! :P
@Alvar Not yet (thankfully) three more hours

8:04 PM
@MarcoCeppi DId you give me 1 rep?

Still need to round up a few more things. We'll be taking lots of pictures
@lazyPower haha, naw. but I'm making a bunch of 1 rep badges for people without SO logins

@MarcoCeppi my teacher is going to the stackoverflow meeting in stockholm kind of cool

haha dang :P

@MarcoCeppi what is the meeting about? what's the point? I don't get it!

@Alvar Just a social meetup :D Networking, drinking, etc

8:05 PM

@ajmitch I'm always stuck in the past :P

CET is the shit! :D

it's ok, I just went backwards in the weekend

Sweden shouldn't vote of accepting the euro we should vote about the US dollar! :D
(sweden is the worlds most american country! :D (except from the U.S))

8:09 PM
@Alvar nice use of nested parenthesis

I think there are several countries competing for that title

theres something self satisfying about being in the nation's capital reading this

@lazyPower nations?

better?

@lazyPower we're not saying it's a good & healthy competition ;)

8:11 PM
hah, i'm just jazzed about being in DC

You don't live there, I take it?

i must have walked the entire south west quadrant of DC this morning.

@lazyPower wooooooooooow

No sir, I hail from Pittsburgh. I came down to chill with @MarcoCeppi and attend #SOMeetup DC

@lazyPower That's awesome! :D

8:12 PM
Hi all late but back

@Takkat good morning! :D

8:13 PM

@MarcoCeppi, @ajmitch says you're buying.

@ajmitch I'm paying for the food and watered down beer - it's a BYO6pk :)

So what's the time in this famous city now? (CET 22:16)

16:16 EST

8:16 PM
@lazyPower You have got the whole day a head of you! make it count! :D

i made the AM count, the evening is going to be lost to beer and debauchery of a geeky nature

My mouse wheel starts making a funny noise - too much talk here since I left office :)

I'm currently trying to get natty & sid updated, it takes a little while

@ajmitch did you manage to get 11.04 running in virtual box?

yep, no problems with it

8:20 PM
how did you overcome the XServer 1.10 issue?

well, few problems

I was thinking of trying the SVN - but then I'm not so much in a hurry...

so, let's find out if the gnome3 ppa is one-way only :-)

@htorque one-way?

@ajmitch Jorge Castro mentioned something like that
@ajmitch but i've successfully removed it in the past using ppa-purge. well, i'll see :-)

8:33 PM
if it is please add it!

> Need to get 354 MB of archives.
could take a while :-)

will add the gdm screenshot (if i get it working)
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-control-center-data_1%3a2.91.93-1~build1_i386.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite '/usr/share/gnome-control-center/keybindings/50-accessibility.xml', which is also in package gnome-settings-daemon 2.32.1-0ubuntu12
dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (Broken pipe)
:..(
one sudo apt-get install -f later it's done.

8:50 PM
@RolandTaylor I installed Skype 2.2 works fine for me...

not bad
I'm just restarting natty in virtualbox after an update & hoping that it still works :)
looks like something's hung while trying to shut down

Badges are done - time to get food and head out. Have a good night guys

have fun

Nice

8:54 PM

@MarcoCeppi nice badge!

@StefanoPalazzo wish you could have been here too, with your talking computers

That would have taken a few people by surprise

@lazyPower heh :-)
