1:01 PM
:)

↑ this is a great story :D

Oli
@MarcoCeppi Blame ICANN for not letting people put spaces in domains. When I write it, it's just muscle-memory.

@Oli Yeah, I know what you mean - same thing happens to me, I always have to go back through and edit it to have a space :)
PS: Playing hookey from work today
Too many exciting things happening. I would never have been able to focus

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo I saw some great comments on Digg/Slashdot/et al when this came out... The best being to award them $75tn, tax them and pay off the national deficit :)

Oli
1:06 PM
(I know that would never really work but it's a nice idea, leaving the RIAA trillions in debt)
But then China would essentially own Hollywood. Meh. I guess they couldn't make things any worse.

If they'd find a bank to lend the money, wouldn't that cause immense inflation?
I like btw how this story shows the real value created by this fine industry, not like these dreamers in banking and finance

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo I just mean they could transfer some of the national debt to the RIAA to offset an unpayable tax bill

what the hell ...
is speechless

right, limewire would have to pay first though. But they might as well; it probably doesn't make much of a difference whether they owe 1bn or 75tn

well it doesn't to them but it does to us :D

1:17 PM
heh yes :-)

with 75tn they'd be 13tn above the entire worlds estimated GDP ... that is so sick ... it is even obscene ...
what did they expect? People associate Android with cheaper devices than Apple products ... of course it is a flop if you price that stuff that high

it's an expensive computer that doesn't do much,
why would anyone want to buy one?

well both are, the iPad and the Xoom but people expected the Xoom to be less expensive

@OctavianDamiean Can't beat that one thing @lazyPower posted forever ago

and apparently Motorola expected people to got nuts about that thing

aaah he's ripping it's head off!
:D

O.O DO WANT! :D

@MarcoCeppi I thought you had bought one...? am I imagining things?

to be honest if I decide to buy a tablet device then I expect it to be able to run Ubuntu, if it isn't I don't care about it
I am an Android enthusiast but not fanboy :D
however I'm an Ubuntu fanboy :p

I'd be happy with any device at all, if it runs open source software, and runs it well
that's why I bought this nokia phone, but they're going to be out of the game soon...

1:33 PM
@MarcoCeppi you're kidding, 299$ for the tablet only? :o

not that it's a nice device in the first place, their python port is pretty crippled and unmaintained. so I'm a sucker... I'll probably have to take a leaf out of your book and buy an android phone

that is almost nothing but if I take into account the shipping costs and the VAT then ... well :D

@OctavianDamiean $399 gets you the attached keyboard :)

Oh man I so want it now ...
0
Q: Transfering the file from remote system to my system

Manujhow can i transfer the file from remote system to my system with the use of FTP?

uh what?

@OctavianDamiean That's what I said when I first saw it - so I ordered one

1:41 PM
@StefanoPalazzo the problem with Android is that it is not as open as it used to be
Google decided to not open-source the latest release Android 3.0

huh, interesting

at least not for now but they also didn't mention any possible time frame

doesn't it use a linux kernel?

it does

so that's a violation of the license then, they should be held accountable

1:43 PM
and that was also something which I thought about, wouldn't they have to open-source it due to the GPL?

I'd say, 75 trillion dollars

@OctavianDamiean absolutely, that's called 'strong copyleft'

you see that is the main reason it turned me off big time
my new C book arrived today so I'll have something else to play with. I'll get myself such a nice Touch tablet thingy and enjoy it in combination with something really open like Ubuntu :)

Something I don't understand, with phones being this powerful, surely someone must've thought of putting together a very basic linux os and just running a stripped down Gnome desktop

Oli
1:46 PM
@StefanoPalazzo The Nokia N900 isn't far from that.

@StefanoPalazzo I did but then I also thought about the time that would take and I got scared

Oli
Not Gnome but it's Linux + X + PulseAudio, etc

I mean I thought about it ... not that I did it :D

@Oli Can you do "import pygtk; pygtk.require("2.0"); import gtk" on it?

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Give me a second

1:48 PM
If it had the full pygtk bindings, including glade, I'd probably sell a kidney to buy one

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Yeah that all works fine

oh god... I wish I didn't know now, check account balance

Oli
Quite a few of the older applications (ported over from the older Nokia tablets) are native GTK so yeah... Very capable little phone, if a little slow compared to the very newest
A second hand one will set you back somewhere between £150 and £200
(* .8 for €)
No, wrong way

@Oli Even better, since I can't afford anything like that at the moment, it'll be cheaper when I do have some money, some day :P

Oli
1:52 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Yeah I'd wait whatever... It's getting on and Nokia have been awful to it.

in Austria you can get a N900 for 140€ already

@Oli I know what that's like. Nokia made big noise around the cheap s60 platform phones, and then abandoned the platform 4 months later...
It's soo nice :-(

what? The S60 platform wasn't anywhere near nice. shudders
I mean from a developer point of view

@OctavianDamiean I have a nokia C5, it's the best phone I ever had.

Oli
Well if you're considering it, here's my N900 review from lateish last year: thepcspy.com/read/my-n900-review

1:56 PM
yeah you're right, the native dev environment is pretty awful
my blackberry is collecting dust though, that was even more awful (:

@Oli you have crumbs in your phone!

@Oli thanks

Oli
@OctavianDamiean Yeah it makes me look like I'm an international cookie smuggler but my pockets are actually pretty clean most of the time... I don't know where it all comes from.
2

best thing about the blackberry storm by the way: it has great ringtones, I immediately copied them over to the nokia c5 :PPP

ubuntu 11 looks sexy

1:58 PM
In every other respect, it's a paperweight

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo A ringing endorsement.

a bit o canned air and a qtip, you could have that thing cleaned up fairly quickly.

Oli
Ha! Only just got the pun there

Oli
@lazyPower I give it a clean every time I open her up (and that's a few times a week - usually out of boredom) but it looks like the photos within minutes.

2:00 PM
@Oli, you have some serious writing skills

@Oli i do find it amusing at how quickly particulates accumulate in electronics. I think they are magnets for "crud".

hey maybe you should respond to this spam email I got earlier today

@StefanoPalazzo I got the same thing

wants one
time to call it a day
laters

2:02 PM
@MarcoCeppi that is interesting, how did it get past the spam filter? what does this guy want?

@StefanoPalazzo He wants people to write articles for that one website

@MarcoCeppi check out the website, there are no articles

I dont like how he's going about the recruiting.
smells fishy

just short summaries that don't make any sense, and if you click on anything you're redirected to [something]

@StefanoPalazzo There were when I was there

2:05 PM
@MarcoCeppi Oh sorry, you're right, I clicked the wrong thing :O
> WinSCP is one of the most popular applications in Windows to copy files from a remote system to the local system. Using Nautilus we can simulate WinSCP in Ubuntu too
this threw me ↑

@StefanoPalazzo The site is just riddled with adverts and a rather horrible layout

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Thank you

uhm.. simulate win scp? isnt it the other way around? :P

I should ask on the site, "How do I install Cygwin on ubuntu?"
:P

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Wine :)

2:07 PM
@Oli tries

@StefanoPalazzo WHYY

Oli
Cygwin on Wine on Ubuntu, in VirtualBox on Windows
I can't think of anything more convoluted without repetition.

oh my word, the installer is horrible

Oli
I guess you could start with VMWare ESXi as the bare-metal layer

whot?
2
now the "total" progress bar keeps getting full, and then reverting to zero. It's a UX disaster.

2:13 PM
I know ubuntu 11.04 is at beta stage at the moment, but with unity 2d, it feels like an alpha release. If I simply switch through 3-4 apps, the whole thing crashes and I have to hard-reboot...
plus, super+d is nice!

fixme:ntdll:NtQueryVolumeInformationFile 0x144: attribute info not supported
bash.exe: warning: /tmp must be a valid directory name
     10 [main] bash 12 exception::handle: Exception: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
   1371 [main] bash 12 open_stackdumpfile: Dumping stack trace to bash.exe.stac
doesn't work with wine :-(

@MarcoCeppi What do we have planned for tonight other than beer + geeks?

@lazyPower I created an SE trivia game for the two shirts I got from SE
That's about it (there will be food)

I'll fail :P
did we get any other schwag than the shirts?

It's mainly being social

2:23 PM
awweee do we HAVE to be social? I'm more of a code in the corner kinda guy :P (j/k beer loosens me up)

Anyone know how to change the resolution using unity?

yep, type in screen after you've hit super
it'll bring up the monitor's application which you can then change your resolution.
however, if you have GNU Screen installed, make sure you aren't launching that.... i did that a few times and couldnt figureout wtf i was doing wrong :P

@oshirowanen I don't have it running atm, but try tapping Super and typing "Monitors", something like that

ah monitor thats right
not screen
quits trying to be intelligent
i got my one good question this month, time to let my brain cool down for round 2

@lazyPower <3 GNU Screen

2:28 PM
@MarcoCeppi its a life skill mang

Kind of excited to be meeting a pseudo celebrity for lunch
@jorgeCastro should be here too, that crazy pirate.

@StefanoPalazzo I have tried that, but the dropdown just goes upto 1024x768, my monitors default resution is 1680x1050
@lazyPower I haven't done any xorg config stuff for a long time, can't remember where the file is...

@oshirowanen you'll probalby have to do some xorg voodoo, like drop that modeline in your xorg config

@oshirowanen do you know what sort of graphics chip your computer has?

2:30 PM
@StefanoPalazzo not sure, it's a built in intel something something graphics chip.
@lazyPower Havn't done that type of stuff for years. where is the xorg.conf file again?

hrm
sec let me ssh home

last time i remember it was in /etc/X11 I think...

@oshirowanen all of the intel chips should work perfectly, so something must be really wrong

can't believe people actually have positive things to say about gnome3

2:32 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Oh wait, I forgot to say that I am testing it out in VirtualBox...

helllo guys!!

@oshirowanen ah!
@oshirowanen that makes more sense, you need to install the virtualbox guest additions (it's somewhere in the virtual machine's main menu). And you need to configure your machine for 3d support

@StefanoPalazzo Yes, so basically, trying to get full screen resolution in virtualbox, but even after installing the guest addition, I am not getting full screen. just 1024x768

@oshirowanen yeah its /etc/X11/xorg.conf

remember that 3d in virtualbox is kind of experimental, it's not supposed to work perfectly
@RolandTaylor like your new avatar :-)

2:33 PM
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........
@oshirowanen yeah vbox makes a world of difference in that equation

@StefanoPalazzo thanks :)

wb @KaustubhP

@RolandTaylor on the development side of things (and you can always shut off gnome shell), gnome 3 is pretty awesome drools, I can't wait to get it in ubuntu

@StefanoPalazzo It crashed again... why do I need to enable 3d in virtualbox? I am using unity 2d.

same here
I just think that people need to give them the same grind and worse - that KDE4 got - over the choices made about the interface and features

2:36 PM
@lazyPower how is DC?

This city is intense, i'm about to pack up and go back out

and ofc the draconian tyrannical "take my options and swallow them" - attitude they have pushed surrounding it

see if i cant get lost before @MarcoCeppi meets me for lunch

ooh, geek date ;)

its a man date!
Dont hate on the bro-mance

2:37 PM
I know it's not a solution, but, if you have a USB key somewhere, download the latest image at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ open up the USB startup disk creator from the Administration menu, hit 'erase disk', select as much as possible of extra space and click 'make startup disk'. It' *much much* nicer than virtualbox
I'm using a USB disk every day to develop software for Unity, it's a pretty rocking way to run Unity.

@lazyPower nope, i have bro-vers myself, and am a big fan of Scrubs. SO you know I am just kidding ;)

@KaustubhP o.o - I believe Marco has a gf :)

@lazyPower /etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty. Should it be empty?

@saradactyl > me, no worries
@oshirowanen mine isnt
@oshirowanen but i also use nvidia / 10.10 .... so ymmv if its required or not
bbiaf, going back out to the streets

@lazyPower hmmm, I'm using the 11.04 beta 1 with unity 2d. let me try again, might have made a mistake in the file name, case sensitive.
@StefanoPalazzo I think I will have to give that a try.

2:41 PM
@RolandTaylor yup, he has one :)

@oshirowanen do it, it's awesome
native speed and everything

@lazyPower I don't seem to have an xorg.conf file at all...
/etc/X11$ ls -l
total 68
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2011-03-29 15:19 app-defaults
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2011-03-29 15:19 cursors
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14 2011-03-29 15:17 default-display-manager
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2011-03-29 15:14 fonts
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17394 2010-02-19 00:02 rgb.txt
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2011-04-06 12:04 X -> /usr/bin/Xorg
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2011-03-29 15:19 xinit
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2011-02-08 13:27 xkb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 709 2010-11-02 21:17 Xreset

you won't unless one is created by a driver or by hand

@StefanoPalazzo Just found an unused 4Gb usb key! :D That's probably enough right?
@RolandTaylor So it is possible to manually create one and set the resolution?

@oshirowanen yes that's plenty. After you hit "make startup disk", the thing will run for about 20 minutes, installing various things

2:45 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Thanks! Will give this ago tonight.

anyone know about that site?
I've been approached and I see mention of compensation
O.o
@oshirowanen yes it is, but there could be a catch to it
if the resolution is not supported by the driver it might not work

@RolandTaylor @StefanoPalazzo and I have also - seems like mass spam

@RolandTaylor A catch?
@RolandTaylor Oh, it should do, I am using 10.04 in virtualbox which works find at full resolution.

@oshirowanen cool

@RolandTaylor Yeah we've all got email from them; seems like a scam

2:48 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Or a desperate plea

@MarcoCeppi @StefanoPalazzo thanks ^^

alright, have fun @lazyPower. @MarcoCeppi treat the kid well :D
good night folks!

@RolandTaylor Just not sure if I can copy the xorg.conf from 10.04 to 11.04...

@oshirowanen I wouldn't suggest doing that

both of which are in virtualbox.

2:49 PM
@MarcoCeppi that's the best case scenario :-)

quite some travel between the versions

@RolandTaylor What would you suggest in the mean time? Can't do the usb thing until tonight.
@RolandTaylor So it's not possible to just copy the resolution section?

@oshirowanen I would suggest waiting to be honest
@oshirowanen you could try that

@MarcoCeppi if it is, I'm enraged they didn't even bother to check the basic assertions made in the email. First, "I've seen your blog", then "Don't forget to tell me where your blog is", and of course, I don't have one... That's not a good strategy if you want people to work for nothing.

not sure if it would work 100%

2:51 PM
@RolandTaylor I guess it's virtualbox anyway, so I can revert back easily.

@StefanoPalazzo I wonder how they found my blog in the first place
@oshirowanen yeah ^^

@StefanoPalazzo Well "compensation" is in the email. I think they're trying to build SEO by linking in and out on other Ubuntu Blogs

@RolandTaylor giving it ago now.

I'm getting more and more tempted to respond

@MarcoCeppi I'm gonna delete the comment - I need "compensation" irl - but not from scammers :)

2:53 PM

make your own cheezeburger mashups, and auto-post to twitter.

3:10 PM
@StefanoPalazzo xrandr?

please recommend the alternatives for the follownig software for enterprise environments http://bit.ly/eka6bv #alternative

@AskUbuntuTwitter The typo! The typo! Arrrgh!

@oshirowanen what about xrandr?

3:34 PM

Q: How do I install the latest version of GNOME 3?

Martin ZeltinI followed the instructions for compiling the Gnome 3 Shell and it did compiled with a few errors here and there but it didn't run. I installed Gnome 3 Shell using sudo apt-get install gnome-shell but I got version 2.31.x but the latest is 2.91.5 or something. So is there a way for me to install ...

if anyone can test the gnome3 instructions one last time I would appreciate it
it will be linked from the gnome announcement

3:56 PM
@GeorgeEdison Does Area51 have an API?
Nevermind
17
Q: Why I think Area51 needs an API.

George EdisonOkay, I have to admit that I never dreamed I would be advocating an API for Area51. But here I am doing it :) I think we need an API for Area51. Granted, the whole concept of questions and answers is vastly different but here are my reasons for needing it: Applications that notify the user of ...

1 hour later…
5:01 PM
@Marco: It sort of does have an API.
The discussion part of it does...

hi @all!

there really should be a compiler that takes pseudo-code as input :D
just wasted an hour implementing a solution to a problem i came up with in five minutes. :D

@htorque ok got the final bits from rodrigo
our gnome3 instructions are all set!

cool

5:09 PM
I could use a screenshot of the GDM selection
but it's not a deal breaker

i currently don't have much time
does the ppa still hose the original system?

you can't revert if that's what you mean
aka. if you hate it, you're stuck with it
but I added a scarier warning up top

i'm sure ppa-purge worked the last time i tested it?
will try again later today :)

a companion removal article would be awesome

hello :)

5:29 PM

wtf

A: Should we require minimum reputation to continue asking questions?

Joshua RobisonLACK OF MODERATION IS THE PROBLEM The whole reason askubuntu is having this problem in the first place is not that there are stupid people asking stupid questions. This happens on all the SE sites. The problem is the lack of moderation. LACK OF MODERATORS = LACK OF MODERATION The reason there...

who upvoted this crap? :)

I have no idea

ME!! I UPVOTED IT TWICE!!! ARGG

@JoshuaRobison :P

@JoshuaRobison the problem with your questions is that they either lack information or formatting
thats the only reason why they didn't get any decent answers or upvotes yet

5:40 PM
I dunno, AU has been a pleasant site for me to contribute on

welp , then someone with enough rep to edit them can fix them right..hmm

@JorgeCastro check this out

Singling it out like that on Meta was kinda harsh

look how your question got attention and upvotes after me editing it ;)

5:40 PM
rofl

I never thought to look, but apparently, without making big noise about it, it has 10 times as many users as any of my other SE apps :-)

on the bright side of things, more people know that askubuntu is here

not sure that's the kind of publicity I'd like to receive :P

@JoshuaRobison on the not so bright side they now think that it is not moderated at all and is of low quality, which it isn't at all compared to other SE sites, yes even the main site SO. Skip that, actually especially the main site

Oli
@failbadp Yeah I saw on the main thread

but i'v noticed so many duplicate questions on askubuntu
many of them written by me

@JoshuaRobison duplicate questions are not bad

Well, not deletion bad :P

and after all my questioning, i still have only one rep

@JoshuaRobison you have 11

5:45 PM
Oh nice!

@RolandTaylor lol

@JoshuaRobison By skimming over your questions, I'm afraid you might be victim to the problem of difficult niche questions being ignored by people for lack of clue :)

@RolandTaylor your never happy with anything are you?>

@failbadp I know. It happens to the most vulnerable of us

that said -- the first few reputation points are always the hardest to snatch

5:46 PM
@JoshuaRobison don't get this wrong now, but reading your profile page you seem to be someone with good english skills (given you are a teacher) so you could also gain reputation by editing others posts and correcting them where necessary.
that would improve the entire sites quality ;)

@OctavianDamiean that sounds a lot like grinding at 2 rep/edit :)

@TheX not very often

by the way I am digging the blog so far...

@failbadp well I meant it as a way he could participate other than asking questions :)

I'll be happy when life starts looking better for me - like when I have friends, money, and a wife

5:48 PM
@OctavianDamiean I'de be happy to. But up until today, I have had only 1 rep. Though I really have learned a lot through all my errors and ignorant questions. I do honestly like this site.

thanks :D @TheX

Well, there's also answers
those are probably easier to get reputation from :)

@RolandTaylor just joking

@failbadp of course

5:49 PM
you'd never guess I'm a natural born comedian :)

ikr?

I _ Know _ right? :D

that is what I thought, wasn't sure though...
I have learned in the past that it is better to ask when in doubt, rather then make assumptions...

@JoshuaRobison a tip. If you have a problem and you have information for you'd like to share which is on another site, then just post the important part in the question and link to the site. Just posting a link to sites that there is something related to your question won't get you very far as not everyone is willing to go through another site to get all information he needs to help you

very true

5:53 PM
:o new Skype beta?! :D

want a contribuator?? how much do you pay?

$0.00 per day :)
for now I don't have the money to pay anyone :P
hopefully that will change in the near future

contributor to what?

@OctavianDamiean did you check the skype forum?
it's not only a new beta, it's new headaches
don't install it
@OctavianDamiean my blog :P

@OctavianDamiean that was for @RolandTaylor

5:55 PM
oh well I didn't expect it to run smooth just because it is new :D

@OctavianDamiean yes. you're right

THE WORLD IS OVER!!! RT @Skype: Skype 2.2 Beta for Linux out now • http://bit.ly/foA4Kq

@OctavianDamiean only if you mean by run smooth = not run at all

^ that is all I have to say about the Skype update. :P

@JamesGifford I will go outside and see if the sky is parting

5:57 PM
@TheX @OctavianDamiean Seems to be running fast here. Fixed a few minor UI bugs.
@RolandTaylor You do that. ;)

the sky is parting?

the world really is coming to an end

Indeed.

duke nukem forever has a release date
skype just released the biggest april fools joke ever

@RolandTaylor no... they delayed it again...

5:59 PM
pigs are flying...
@TheX lol I know :D
but to a set time

The comments are making me laugh.

they have done that before...

@JamesGifford Have you seen what people said on the skype forums?

@RolandTaylor Nope. Link me? I'm sure it's going to be hilarious.
