How do I do a screenshot of the desktop cube? http://bit.ly/g4VXE6 #compiz

3 hours later…
2:52 AM
No time to talk, just came in here to check the weather! Oh wait, I'm the only one here....
(Er, anyway, just kidding.)

3:14 AM
Is there a Gnome3 stable PPA? http://bit.ly/ePm24W #gnome

3:34 AM
@jgbelacqua we don't talk about that around here :P

Launchpad build system seems to be broken:
> "dpkg-deb: error: control directory has bad permissions 700 (must be >=0755 and <=0775)"

@GeorgeEdison it's known, I saw it being discussed this morning

So it's not my package's fault?

no it's not
I don't know when it's being fixed properly, but I did see that the people who know how to do so knew what the problem was :)

That's a good sign. I guess I'll just have to retry my recipe later.

3:40 AM
got a link to the build failure?

got a link to the page which links to the build failure? :)
mostly trying to get an idea of when it happened

@ajmitch Sorry... I'll get that for you.
^---- There we go.

don't worry, I found it :P
right, getting some feedback from an LP friend who works on that area

Oh good.

3:56 AM
yeah, hopefully it can be fixed soon

4:07 AM
Oh boy! There's an updated firmware for my flash drive!
I'll be back in about 5 everyone.

have fun :)
LP guys are looking at the recipe builder problem, if you're lucky it'll be fixed soon as well

4:44 AM
Wow... IE9... is... slow.

@GeorgeEdison Are you using it on 64 bit. If so the new optimized java script engine only works on 32 bit. The 64 bit one is the old slow one.

@trampster No, I have the 32-bit version.

1 hour later…
5:50 AM
Is it possible to disable Remote Desktop preference?

@StefanoPalazzo there?

6:13 AM
How can you resize the icons in the Unity Dash panel? http://bit.ly/gqOLUp #unity

Q: How to recover from fullscreen crash?

ShazznerI was playing Gnu FreeDink and when I exited out it just sort of crashed and stayed fullscreen with the music playing. I couldn't for the life of me get back to the desktop, alt-tab did nothing, same with ctrl-alt-delete, esc, etc. I've had this happen with fullscreen games, and I usually wind u...

Had it happen a few times, and it drives me nuts

9:03 AM
sry

@Shazzner can't you killall nameofapp in terminal from Alt+F2?
you need to know the application's name
which is not necessarily the name of the game ;)

@Takkat Yeah I'm sure there's some terminal thing I could have done
but the whole pid != app and that there's no clear instructions on this is kind of frustrating
I heard the secret to a lot of these problems is to run a fullscreen app as a separate xserver, but I have no idea how to do that

problem with chmod command http://bit.ly/fqT7KG #chmod

I think ubuntu really needs some sort of 'oh crap get me back to the desktop'- panic button

9:22 AM
@Shazzner killall needs no pid, only the names the processes from your app have, eg freedink-dfarc nor whatever the application's processes may be called. You'll see that from top command.

@Takkat ah ok cool

1 hour later…
Oli
10:51 AM
@Shazzner A while ago (some years now) I hardwired the power button to restart X - AFAIK it's still completely scriptable so you could have it drop you in a TTY and start htop, or something along those lines

@Oli that's brillant

Oli
And of course, when I say hardwired, I don't mean I rewired the power button, just altered the script that runs when you press it

@Oli regardless, that's awesome :)

Oli
The file you want to break is: /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh

there should be a way to hardware physical stuff though
aces, I'm off the bed but I'll take a look at that

Oli
10:54 AM
That's as close as you'll get with software that I know of. ACPI is pretty low level so unless the disk the script sits on has crashed or the kernel locks up, it'll execute.

thanks!

1 hour later…

Cleaning disc space http://bit.ly/guLPbU #diskusage

12:23 PM
@AskUbuntuTwitter HEY! That's actually a really good question that you're tweeting (for once. . .)

12:52 PM
hello

ughhhh this drive home with a hangover should be fun

lol

1:07 PM
@lazyPower Good luck!! Thanks for coming out
@ssj6akshat Hey!

1 hour later…
2:10 PM
flag weight 340 -> seems someone was busy looking at flags ;)
hopefully people will stop adding "me too" answers :-(

Oli
@htorque That's just a fairly common action in other support mechanisms (forums, launchpad, etc). It's a shame because sometimes they do add value to a question if the problem suffered is identical and they add more information that the OP hasn't

@Oli Then I just convert to a comment - or edit it in to the question/answer

Oli
I personally think the comment barrier should be lifted so that people don't post me-to answers but Jeff hates that idea (Jeff hates most of my ideas) so it'll probably never happen.
2

It's not that he hates your idea - we've all pushed for this at one point in time
Comments will always be "second class citizens"

Oli
@MarcoCeppi Sure but it's silly that it's a problem in the fist place. It's the Jurassic Park argument: nature always finds a way. If people want to yell and scream about something they're going to do it where they can and for new users there's only the answer box. That causes work for the rest of us with flagging and moderating.

2:17 PM
@Oli that was my biggest beef with the system when i started using AU

Oli
Mmmm beef.

;-)

Oli
I'll give it another few weeks (and a few hundred not-answers) and I'll have another moan at Jeff. I've been riding him pretty hard recently so I'll give him time to forget about how whiney I am :)

as someone already said: being jeff atwood must be awesome → "hello, inbox!" :D

Oli
@htorque Yeah it must be a unholy cesspit of moaning and groaning.
Huzzah, more than half-way to my Epic badge

2:56 PM
it does kind of work out
if some me toos!
and you delete it
the question still gets bumped
@Oli I have an idea for your decrufting
so, unless you're 10k you don't see the tools, so you miss dupes unless you happen to stumble across it.
how about a search that looks for open questions with "possible duplicate of:" as a comment, and generate a list.

@JorgeCastro That would be really easy in the API actually

I bet we'd find a bunch of should-really-be-dupes

3:14 PM
Lost 3 of my 4 cores http://bit.ly/eARnn8 #1010

I can drill further and do an inner join to find if the question is already closed - but that's a basic start

3:39 PM
sweeeeet.

My firefox browser keeps crashing when I try to download videos using sites like keepvid.com. It uses some kind of java applet to enable the download links. Once that applet activates my browser crashes. I am using FF 3.6.16 on lucid. Can anyone give me any guidance here...

3:52 PM
can't find the "^" in spanish config keyboard
>.<
someone needs to make a program that does the gives you key combo to a specific character
I would make this man a statue

I just got a new answer on one of my questions. The answerer linked to another question which he had taken the answer from. The questions were near exact duplicates and this new answerer was the OP of the dupe.
And he didn't even give me the upvoted answer. He copied a downvoted answer.

@John link?

dupe vote from me!

@JorgeCastro I tried unity in Natty beta 1 on the netbook last night - I love it

4:02 PM
Thanks! I already flagged it too.

\o/
@John It's annoying when that happens
someone asks an obvious dupe
and someone marks it
and next thing you know people keep answering the dupe, and then upvoting all the answers

my only complaints - the menu should not be hidden by default (I was confused a bit at first - cause I forgot) - and I didn't know you could not minimize items by clicking the launcher icon :P - but otherwise - WOW

And the OP knew it was a dupe! -sigh-

yeah
dupe and flag is the best thing to do there

I did. It just didn't feel like enough so I came here. :-)

Oli
4:05 PM
@John Okay I've closed the duplicate

@MarcoCeppi how big of a HANG OVER do you have? :)

@Oli: Thank you.

@John the real obvious ones are awesome
"how do I install flash?"
welcome to ask ubuntu, you must be the first person asking that!

@JorgeCastro flash is in the past :)

Oli
Seems a bit odd to dupe-close things that have already come to fruition and have been answered but I guess it doesn't do any harm either.

4:07 PM
@JorgeCastro: I came this close to asking that once when I was helping someone with their computer. Turns out they had the 64 bit version of the Ubuntu.

64 bit seems running okay for me since 10.2
the fullscreen is still kind of junk though

@Oli It's breadcumbs for new users coming in - and strengths search results

Oli
@MarcoCeppi Fair point
My brain is a little scrambled after 8 hours of battling to the death with Django's various Middleware classes. I've got another hour of it too >_<
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more. See you on the other side.
And on a side note: 6GB of RAM isn't enough.
Especially when you're used to doling out a third to VirtualBox and up to another third on Firefox... The remaining third goes very fast to leaky applications (Banshee, Gwibber, Gedit, etc).

Q: Gnome 3 : horizontal layout for workspaces

MandibullHello, I just can't find how to get a workspace grid using Gnome 3. It just stays vertical, width of 1 and unlimited height... Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

close pl0x
@JorgeCastro HAX!
:P (pretty awesome)

@RolandTaylor that number is huge! :) :) :)

why is that a close?
he could be using the PPA
or built it from source

Because it's not possible - unless he's willing to write an extension
so the "solution" can't come from here

ok so the answer is "No, this is currently not possible, unless you write an extension"

hmm
true

5:25 PM
still on topic

I will edit my answer :P
fixed

oldest post on the frontpage is only 5 hours
getting busy baby!

13k leave a motorway :D

I'm gonna be doing some writing today on my novel so I won't be answering too many questions :P (found too many errors in some passages D:! - why didn't language too alert me - I have no clue :( )
hmm I'm finding metacity to be pretty comfortable - though much prefer compiz - just gotta love the shortcutseseses

5:35 PM
@JorgeCastro Damn, picking up steam

hope answers keep up with this pace :/
(looks like they do)

well I found the pace is only going down when the majority of us go to bed - otherwise the pace seems brisk

I never go to bed :P

But my real job and my real family keep me away quite often
need to look after the kids

hot dogs + cold cats = nomnomnom

Banshee is confusing me a bit
isn't it supposed to organize Videos as well as Music?

@JorgeCastro hey! oh, that's a surprise.

@htorque a good one though!
@RolandTaylor yeah but it sucks at that, needs to be improved

What gives? - I'm not liking the natty narwhal beta release with virtualbox 4.0.4 at all, anyone agree?

@JorgeCastro sweet!
(at the gnome-panel move)

6:58 PM
yeah, it's probably easier to deal with the "unity sux" people :P

now to fix those pesky "gnome-shell is awesome" people :)

...
@htorque I like new things, but really, if it's a fallback why change it?

lol @JorgeCastro it was a joke :D
@sadmicrowave Virtualbox killed my experience - when I used it on real hardware I was blown away (good thing I always pack an extra parachute)

@RolandTaylor - well good to know it's just virtualbox that makes it suck butt - I'm actually relieved to hear that

7:01 PM
@JorgeCastro well, it's a fallback if your hardware doesn't support 3d acceleration, not if you dislike unity. :P

@htorque boooo. unity-2d exists

yeah - I tried it after beta 1 was released (second time since alpha3 I think), and not only did everything crash, but it also froze the entire desktop

but it is no default fallback yet, so i guess they wanted to make the gnome session look as close to unity as possible - anyways, i too like the change ;)

@JorgeCastro I still think it's good to have around, I personally like switching between unity and gnome-panel

Q: Alt + Number key combination in notebooks

TrufaIf you do Alt + 64 in a PC you will get "@" and so on for most characters. I could not find out way yet to use this very helpful resource in notebooks. Can this be done? I would like if possible an operating system / computer brand agnostic answer because it will be more helpful to others (an...

7:03 PM
right
I am saying, with any major transition you should have a fallback
shipping unity is change enough
no need to ship unity AND mess with the classic

is there a way to do a numlock in ubuntu

ship unity but keep classic for people who don't want it

??

or better: i don't care that much, because gnome-panel is so 2010. :P

oh I got ya now :P

7:04 PM
right

@htorque right, this isn't for you and me, it's for 1990's linux user

good old times, huh? :D

I so much missed it
the alternative was: 3.11 :'''(

oh, windows for workgroups :P
best game ever :P

lol

all this... GUI stuff D:
ugh
let's go back to the good old days of DOS -_-

When I installed Ubuntu after painful years of XP it felt like coming home
I always wondered why I liked the left-side windows buttons so much
found out that Atari always had them there :)

7:11 PM
:P
no, it's all cloning mac, ya know!?

Never could afford such a thing ;)
but envied people for it (not really I had my TOS)
@RolandTaylor my first PC was pre-DOS: CP/M

@Takkat O.o
What I do miss in Natty (Alpha 3 + daily builds) is the possibility to click on the app. icon on the Unity launcher bar to minimize the app., not only to launch/restore it. This is standard behaviour on other desktops (at least on KDE, XFCE & MS Windows - don't know for Mac), and I think this should be implemented as well on Natty/Unity.

@Takkat i guess you push the average age in here by a fair amount >:P

that above is my #1 problem when using unity - even above hidden menus

(oops)

7:16 PM
not only could not get used to it, but trust me, that will really tick off new users

@htorque /o\

@RolandTaylor you can just click it affects me to +1 the bug

I did :)
I hope it gets changed :O
it was the one thing that left me feeling a little out of place - otherwise my experience was rather comfortable ^^
(so much so that I prefer unity over the gnome-panel experience, and even over gnome-shell (without the overlay open - which is actually sorta okay to me :P)

8:04 PM
hello

hi!

@OctavianDamiean !!!!!!!!!!

@MarcoCeppi link? :O
Just discovered googles easter egg! :D

@MarcoCeppi which address would you like me to use?

@lazyPower Any of them is fine - the one in my profile is probably the best

8:46 PM

i think i ask this every time.

@lazyPower yeah, Ubuntu StackExchange

I am about to upload a pic on myself to the site... so excited :P

@Alvar Yeah! Jin brought Unicorn bucks, it was great

8:48 PM

@Alvar He was cool - but he's an SO user
Only @lazyPower was from Ask Ubuntu

@MarcoCeppi aha so there were all kinds of people form SO

Mostly SO peeps

I thought it was only askubuntu... aha

I have a friend who went to the SO meetup (or SE meetup) in stockholm, (Sweden)

also, you've got mail marco

@lazyPower So confirms my phone

@JorgeCastro did you make it to a SE meetup?

8:52 PM
no it was far for me

some tags would really improve the pics....
@MarcoCeppi are u using a palm phone?

@Alvar yeah, Palm Pre 2

@MarcoCeppi I saw the tag in the photos...
@MarcoCeppi ehm, why? aren't they a bit outdated like "you know what" phone

@Alvar The Pre 2 came out in February in the US, WebOS 2 was released in December, since HP acquired Palm they are rebranding and builing some really good products
Pre 3 coming out in the summer, with a WebOS tablet

@JorgeCastro i feel ya. I drove 4.5 hours to make the DC meetup :P

8:56 PM
wow

minor hike, worth the trip tho. Had a blast and got to be a nuisance in the capitol for a change.

@MarcoCeppi sorry, I thought they were terminated... but there u see...

Those are the only two you would be familiar with unless you're a heavy SO user

hehehe

Well this was fun, but it's time to go home and sleep for a long time. Wasn't easy getting up this morning
