Pip
1:26 PM
At least you have something drawing at all
Man, I'm really thinking about Unity as much as I like working on this engine
this bug is super frustrating, makes me not want to dev at all
I say bug but it's really just a feature that I can't get to work
:/

Pip
Fuck it, I'm going to mess with Unity some more
Any tips?

try to use its features as little as possible lol

Pip
lol
Explain?
What should I avoid specifically (other than the infamous networking)?

for me, it's great for sprites, manipulating transform positions and scaling, and the particle system is great
audio system is okay too

Pip
1:29 PM
What do you do for physics?

oh yeah, and physics are okay :D

Pip
What version are you using for T2?

5.4 beta something
seems fine

Pip
Got it
I have 5.3.3 installed, should probably update
Aaand I need a name
I'm probably doing a kinda roguelike thing in the style of MapleStory

Jon
1:42 PM
lol
don't use any of the features ... goes on to list all the features he uses
one thing that sucks in Unity, is the Line Renderer

as little as possible > <

Jon
And the lack of sorting support for 2d/3d objects
for example, you can set a meshrenderer to draw over a spriterenderer
unless you do it in code
The SortingOrder property is not exposed
And then this bullshit with un-initialized meshrenderer material
And the UI stuff is pretty damn bad
Stupid auto-tilt functionality too
It will auto-tilt regardless if the device orientation is locked at the os level
If you want to respect the device lock feature -- you need to write a plugin

man, there's a Unity Roadshow event coming to Aus and NZ next month for a few days
so I filled in my details to try and get the local Auckland event

Sie
I definitely wish there were better ways to organize the hierarchy. I can understand why some people say things kind of feel cobbled together.

but Unity comes back to me and invites me to the Adelaide, Australia event lol

Jon
1:47 PM
you gonna go?

@Sie for sure. but what can you do, heaps of systems that have to work somehow to make it all happen, it grows and grows ;(
@Jon Nah, I ain't flying to Australia for an advertorial event lol

Jon
would you fly to canada to drink beer?

if the flight was free

Jon
Gofundme

or if I had oodles of cash at the ready
"pls give money so i can drink beer with my friend"

A: How to find nearest gameobject on one side

MilenMade it work by assigning a "Left Side" tag to the enemies on the left and a "Right Side" tag to the enemies on the right. After that I find the closest enemy on a particular side by checking the distance from the enemy to the player and returning the closest one: private GameObject FindCloses...

user92578
This guy just doesn't get it

Programming is hard

user92578
lol yeah

user92578
no clue how a boolean fixes his major flaw

Jon
"it works so back off" -- him

1:50 PM
lol

user92578
jon comment something to him

Jon
haha why?

user92578
because you always know a nice nasty thing to say

user92578
and who the fuck has upvoted that?

Jon
I should probably be more nice
and not say anything when people are being ignorant

user92578
1:51 PM
no, atleast not to this guy

lol Tyyppi, so demanding!

user92578
idiots piss me off

haha
just move on

Jon
his solution isn't that bad
if he just wants to run it once

user92578
1:53 PM
on a static level

I upvoted the highest answer cuz that's the most sound one, physics checks and checking position

user92578
with no moving objects

Jon
right
that is what I mean -- if its just to run when the scene starts

user92578
so, his approach works well for if you are making a screenshot with unity

Jon
if you set a scene up
although
That left/right thing is manual
That would annoy me
you arrange the scene, then you have to change all the tags manually
good for you.. great solution there
The BETTER solution, is to just check the damn X position in relative to the user

user92578
1:56 PM
yeah, the most upvoted answer

but tags are the future!

Jon
i have like 23 tags in GORB

actually, I really wish you could have multiple tags per object

user92578
I only "tag" (assign a name to an entity) to target entities in cutscenes

I went tag crazy with Tallowmere
atm I've got like 13 tags for t2

Jon
1:58 PM
check it out
I got 2 Walls

user92578
lol

Jon
fixed that :D
I always saw the warning and figured it was some stupid unity thing

eh what? what warning?

Jon
tag already registered
i figured it was a built in tag or something
lol

2:04 PM
ahh
room transitions are in (though need to sort it out for networking next)
feels like a game almost :)

2:26 PM
Hello

which could be the reason for failing this test?
I have 2 strings: Match = password, Unlock = password
then it fails when I do
if(match.CompareTo(_pfe.Unlock) == 0)
match is password and Unlock too

should you be checking for == 1?

nope..

2:40 PM
elsewhere I use string.CompareTo() it returns 0 when they match
in this case, comparing password to password, it returns 1
can't understand at all
hmm it seems that the string built from input is 1 character longer.. but if I print it and print the other they are exactly the same..

user92578
> I'd like to keep the game's ideas a secret, hopefully you understand

user92578
Apparently the side tagger has some amazing idea that makes his solution the best :)

hmm, it seems that I missed that Input.inputString also takes the return code :\
@Tyyppi_77 who said this?

user92578
2:55 PM
It's a guy who's solution to a question was horrible

user92578
But apparently it fits the idea of his game perfectly

@Leggy7 ah dang, least you've found it

is there someone good with regular expressons
Why that doesn't work?
				if(line.contains("\\n")) {
					line.replace('\n', ' ');
				}
				System.out.print(line);

I use regular expression "Trainer" programs to test them

@sn0k3 What regular expression are you talking about?

3:07 PM
and line.contains... is that actually using a regular expression?

I am searching for a regular expression or smth, which will remove '\n' in an array of string

regex is a very specific language for string search
line.contains probably jusdt does a simple string match

Regex:
Scanner fileToRead = new Scanner(file).useDelimiter(",\\s*");

so you probably want line.contains("\n")

Also contains and replace aren't C# things that exist are they?

3:09 PM
Java
:)

you're searching for '\n' since you're escaping the \ first

you're not searching for a newline char

@Almo thank you!
I haven't used regular expressions, so yea..Ty @Almo !

it's not a regular expression

3:10 PM
Yea, but you said that

regex looks like that
it's a mini-nightmare all its own

the regular expression, which I am using ( found it in stackoverflow somewhere ) does escape '\' so the expression won't find '\n' it will find 'n', right?

you're not using a regular expression. please do not call it that
you were just searching for the string "\\n", which after escaping is "\n" which is not a newline

The line:
useDelimiter(",\\s*")
did you saw it?
aha

I have no idea what Scanner is

3:12 PM
I am using that to read from a file
Scanner is a class, which has (hm, I'm not sure the word in english )
A simple text scanner which can parse primitive types and strings using regular expressions.

3:23 PM
@Almo how to make new line in text file without '\n' ?
is there other way?

For what purpose?
Do just just don't want to type \n?

I am trying to store 2D array from a .txt file in 2D String array

So what does that have to do with new lines?

Wait a second
Okay
So
For an example:
Level .txt file:
0, 1, 2
1, 2, 3
4, 5, 6

and, when I type for an example:
print(levelFile[0][0]);
to print 0
My code for now:
http://pastebin.com/JwRJ3uXs
But when I print the whole array it just prints that:
0 null
Oh, I found something
:D
    added that:
    	while(fileToRead.hasNext()) {
				line = fileToRead.next();

				levelFile[y][x] = line;
				x++;
				if(line.contains("\n")) {
					y++;
				}
			}

Jon
3:48 PM
Coding is fun

Yes
I almost did that level loader class!

user92578
nice

Jon
Almost isn't good enough though

user92578
that's a almost a good point :)

What does regular expression: '\\s' do?

user92578
3:55 PM
that's still not a regular expression

user92578
but that would look for a string "\s" I think

aha
How to remove "," from a String?
oh yea
:D
substring

Jon
erase it

user92578
You should try parsing HTML with regexp

yeah definitely

user92578
4:00 PM
So easy, I did that tired on a Monday morning

Jon
I think i'm gonna retire from helping people

user92578
What happened?

Jon
Be more like Notch, and just tweet about shit I hate
lol
this guy is stupid
He doesn't know what the B stands for
He talks about changing Hue Saturation Value
Shoudln't you fucken figure out what the B stands for before putting up a tutorial video on adjust colors?
Its Brightness .

He got 5000 subscribers in youtube

Jon
he doesn't explain anything really, lol
just move this here, and move this here
no theory, just changing these knobs.. see.
like this
So basically a video that shows him adjust HSB to create a palette
anyways i hate video tutorials
bibadebabedeboop you got yourself a sprite

4:20 PM
LOL
WHY THAT
DOESN'T WORK
	line = fileToRead.next();

				char[] lineChar = line.toCharArray();

				if(lineChar[x] == '\n') {
					x = 0;
					y++;
				}

				levelFile[y][x] = lineChar[x] + "";
				x++;
It throws that:
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 1
It has enough space in the array
WHYYYYY IT SAYS THAT
@Tyyppi_77 any ideas?

user92578
4:50 PM
@sn0k3 which line?

user92578
One of your indices is too big, so one of the arrays you index seems to be empty or just one element

user92578
You should learn how to use the debugger for these kinds of errors

user92578
There's a bug on newlines though

Sie
5:07 PM
So when you release a game do you normally buy a domain? I see a lot devs do it but I don't see what is wrong with doing www.devname.com/gamename.

i don't

5:20 PM
I think his pale fruits look awful
but otherwise he seems to got that cool art skill

Jon
5:44 PM
U got the art skills bro

Skill = Patience + Taste

DH.
By patience it means years of patience

Jon
But I want it now

6:10 PM
wait... practice it for years? Years? Who does that? I want 5 mins insta practice, not entire years.

.

Jon
yeah seriously, I never put more than 10 minutes into anything in my entire life

Pip

Sie
6:49 PM
@Jon That's part of the problem with most the room scale games.

Pip
@Jon HSV and HSB are the same thing
Brightness == Value in common terminology
> HSV stands for hue, saturation, and value, and is also often called HSB (B for brightness).

Jon
dude, are you trying to school me?
I wrote an HSB/HSV class

Sie
Room scale as a concept is pretty cool but in practice it doesn't work well especially over long periods of time. I bet even when/if Valve does release a VR game the main game won't be room scale. Maybe some extra/bonus areas but I just don't see them doing an entire game in it.

Jon
:P
Anyways, it works in Unity if you any of you want it
its what I use to do my modular backgrounds
