11:01 PM
Oh well gtg for now, thanks for the help

Jon
@MickLH so what did she say?

about your game?

Jon
for crying out loud, i need feedback
no one gives me feedback

her exact words "quite good"
though I think the real review is that she played it for an extended period of time

Jon
coming from her sarcastic ass, i'll take that as a huge compliment

11:05 PM
It is nice man, a little bit addictive

Jon
it is addictive for sure

it's definitely a nice game

addictive in the good way, purely because the game is rewarding to solve, no cheap tricks

^

Jon
I'm proud of it
it has been selling on android

11:07 PM
should be (proud)
talk later!

Jon
not a lot, but i mean, everytime i get a sales i consider the fact that someone wants to play this game
and that means a lot

11:19 PM
@Jon you want feedback?!
FEEDBACK?!
I played it, it's still installed.
do you want proper feedback?
I don't like the user interface
it annoys me
the buttons take up a wider amount of space than the grid - that should match for aesthetic reasons
the back button is stupid and small and by itself in the middle of nowhere
mechanically the game works and I enjoy it though
in portrait mode, anyway

Jon
:D

because landscape mode wastes a lot of screen space in which you could have a larger grid and move the back button
but
3 mins ago, by kalina
I played it, it's still installed.
I will no doubt play it more as well
</feedback>

Jon
the back button was literally added, for iphone
the original UI didn't have a back button anywhere
It relied on the android back button

excuses

Jon
I wanted to align the versions to be the same-- but I should possibly revise the android version and remove the back button
No excuses. you are right.

11:24 PM
on the level select screen the prev/next/back buttons are all different sizes

Jon
prev/next are same size are they not?

yes but that's not the point

Jon
if I removed the back button, would it still be a point?

well then the complaint would be you're wasting lots of screen space

Jon
the grid attempts to fit as best as it can
the rest of the menus... currently suck in landscape
i need to fix that...

11:26 PM
Human mind changes the apparent size of things based on what they are next to, so I think "all different sizes" is perceptually appropriate :P

well if you have something in there making the grid as big as possible then removing the back button or moving it below the other buttons in landscape (which should also have tooltips because I literally didn't have a clue what they did)
also no I didn't play the tutorial so if it's in there then w/e
because who plays tutorials right?
RIGHT?

Jon
are you mick in female form?
you two should totally meet

what makes you say that?

Jon
I just think you two would have a lot to talk about

the ability to change UI color is nice

Jon
11:28 PM
i'm taking notes

it absolutely makes the game more appealing to me

Jon
thanks
I wanted it to be friendly in that way
which is why it asks you what your favorite color is

also, maybe I don't understand the actual rules of the game
no I'm stupid

lol @Jon do you know that all my ex'es after high school I've met on chat... and that they all have had fun personalities like her?

Jon
yep.
this is true, there are multiple ways to finish... however, it beeps red when you solve incorrectly
You still need to sometimes use the image as a helper for the last 4 tiles

11:31 PM
but if you finished, how can it be incorrect?

^

Jon
Logically it is correct.
But it is not the puzzle
and yeah
everyone has pointed that out, and apparently i should delete those puzzles
mick is working on a audit tool

I've entered heated discussion about this topic with him

Jon
i need a count of how many puzzles have multiple solutions

well with the fact it's not made clear what you've done wrong it damages the experience

Jon
11:32 PM
i added that wrong beep

that doesn't mean anything

Jon
lol, it means you are wrong

@Jon sorry I got distracted making music :P I'll finish up that code soon

completing that level is basically like arguing with a pedant over semantics

Jon
lol are you a mick sock puppet?
i'm calling it

11:33 PM
...

I got so lost in sound design, I forgot to write a song... unless you call D monotone a melody and call it a chord progression seperately

Jon
ok... so wouild you say I should remove those levels?

I've only found the one so far

Jon
I made the decision to keep some of those levels
the TV level in 10x10 for example
#5 i think

lol clearly yes @Jon, I definitely would create a sockpuppet account posing as a female and building rep for years so I can influence your game more easily

Jon
11:35 PM
hahaha
you are crazy

only in a fairly manageable way

Jon
My reasoning was.. leave the ones that are do-able
to provide more puzzles... the fans wouldn't mind
i did delete a bunch of bad puzzles
like... at least 150 of them
And I made these puzzles.

Is there a way to fill in the larger grids quicker?

Jon
you really don't like to waste time

it's awkward

Jon
11:37 PM
if you remove easy slide

I was wondering this too actually, whenever I had a situation where the edge told me exactly what squares were set, I wanted to just click the edge and have them all go

Jon
easy slide, locks the x/y slide direction

fine, I know you told me earlier and I ignored you

Jon
if you de-activate that option, it will allow you to draw anywhere

so much time wasted

Jon
11:38 PM
I'm sorry
those options should be more accessible
ideally it would be a popup.. which is something i should be doing

yes, how about you add more buttons and then make them all the same size
that's a good idea
maybe even just get rid of some screens
so you don't have the "play game" screen at the start and just integrate it all into the difficulty selection screen
to remove that huge space at the bottom where an entire separate game could exist

Jon
you should be designing UIs or something
ditch that crappy it sec job

I don't work in IT sec

Jon
come live with me in my cardboard box
we will make games
where do you work?

I am a music producer

Jon
11:42 PM
no shit
that sounds pretty awesome

it's a job

Jon
link?

has many of the same day to day annoyances as your usual dayjob and then some more on top
@Jon oh, yeah, no.

Jon
why not?
gimme a sample

there is no sample
fucking around on SE is escapism for me, I keep the two things very separate

Jon
11:44 PM
i see

level 5 on the 10x10 grid is the same
how annoying
oh it's supposed to be a TV

Jon

on 10x10 the back button is stupidly small

Jon
yeah the back button placement sucks....
i need to rework it

the placement on 10x10 is fine
it's just... small

Jon
11:47 PM
quite honestly, i shoved it in there quickly...

like tiny
well fine I'll stop banging on about your shoehorned back button

Jon
no
thank you
i need to fix it

in landscape mode why don't you split the options screen in half and have the color picker on the left and the other options on the right
also, if you stopped insisting on having pretty pictures as the result of each game you could procedurally generate levels

Jon
I was going to add a randomly generated level
I was thinking of adding it after you beat all the levels
in each difficulty

sure why not
seems like a good place for it

Jon
11:51 PM
it is already coded

but if you did something like that you'd also need to add a statistics page
to show how many levels you've beaten and maybe an average time taken per level or something
with a "share to social media" button

Jon
would you share?

because that's standard functionality in games
no I wouldn't but then I never do in any game

Jon
i feel like that kind of stuff adds noise

who wants to see that kind of spam on their social media feed
certainly not any normal person
but it doesn't stop everybody else from doing it

Jon
11:52 PM
i don't want to partake in that bullshit

but you need a statistics page because it gives people an additional reason to keep playing
everybody likes seeing a number increase as a result of their actions

Jon
ok, i will look into doing this
yeah, that is why i was thinking... add a Gold box at the end of each difficulty level select
once you beat all levels, an animation kicks in, opens the box -- unlimited generated levels
Then i could add a timer.. and a stats page
simple things, but interesting

well you've got an about page

Pip
@Almo It's called a Rampage, but also yeah

Jon
aside from time taken

11:56 PM
maybe you could find a "flat" styled icon pack and convert those into levels

Jon
what other statistic could possibly be interesting?

total games
5x5 games
10x10 games

Jon
@kalina levels are seriously difficult to produce

15x15 games
plus average time per size
thats like 7 statistics
you can't really have win/loss ratio because you don't lose
@Jon I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not

Jon
no i'm serious
every level in my game was tested 10x
it was literally a 1 month testing phase.. non stop revisions

11:58 PM
how long did you spend designing/coding though?

Jon
in all.. way longer than you would think
i lost track

I would expect about as much testing time as coding time tbh
anything less and you get windows vista

Jon
bringing a game to the point of selling it, take a lot longer than you would think
when you do it all by yourself
