Joe
7:00 PM
lol i watched 2 the other day
a serious consideration if we should fund a real life XCOM

Oh man NVIDIA is gonna do some cool shit with the gtx 980 videocardz.com/52552/…

eh, they're comparing it to the 680 instead of the 780. if they compared it to the 780 it would still be better, but more incremental, not so drastic.
looks like 1 GB more memory, higher clock speed, and better compression resulting in less needed memory bandwidth
err wait I'm thinking of the 780 Ti
but yeah

I'm excited about the VR latency improvements

oh, right, there are a lot more slides than just the big ones. XD
thought those were different articles

I just duct taped a broken piece of code and it felt so good

7:14 PM
@AttackingHobo They're not quite out yet, are they? Because I have a 970 on my wish list (maybe 980 if I'm splurging)

i'd wait dual display port out on that mother
dual 4k monitors
think about how much code you could view at the same time
while watching multiple 1080 movies, while playing a few games at the same time

oh man:
I want

ya :)

7:19 PM
No BF4 benchmark, so that'll have to do

I play games at 1080p so... I think I'm set for at least 1 more generation

I've got a GTX 570, and it's starting to show its age, :(

@SpartanDonut VR is just about here and ready to rape your GPU.

I somehow manage to survive with a GT520. :(

If it's going to rape my GPU I'm very concerned for the rest of the world

7:22 PM
yeah, definitely an incremental improvement for existing games, but after reading all the slides it seems to have some great features for new games
my question is how does one use those features?
does something need to be added to opengl?
or will it be all shader stuff?
like the hairworks thing

Joe
@SpartanDonut same... but im thinking about shelling out some ridiculous amount of clams for new systems

it says far cry 4 will take advantage of it. how?

@Lokkij and I'm living with 320m

@Joe Do you have a desktop?

Joe
i had a pc, but bad powersupply took out 60% of it
so i replaced with with a mac mini

7:27 PM
Owch

Joe
and now im considering going back to a game machine

@Joe I spent ridiculous numbers of mollusks on my PC last year... and it's kind of in a state of constant upgrades with peripherals and whatnot as well

That's the way to do it, :)

Joe
i got alot of nice glass... but nothing good to push frames to it right now lol
ive got hydrolic wall mounts for my 3 monitor setup

@Joe Don't fucking skimp on the powersupply!

Joe
7:28 PM
and a mac mini that cant even push 3 1080p

In addition to the cheap monitor I am very happy with, a 1TB SSD has been on the back of my mind for a while now...

Joe
@AttackingHobo it was a corsair! idk what happened

1TB, daamn dude

@SpartanDonut get 2 512 and raid zero them

Yeah that defeats the purpose of getting a 1TB

7:30 PM
huh?

or wait..
I get my raids confused

512+512 = 1tb
radio 0. Zero for how much data you will have if something fucks up.

But also 512 + 512 = 0

That's actually not a horrible idea... I do have a 512 already

Dont buy an SSD from anyone but intel or samsung though

Joe
7:32 PM
^

I get the samsungs yeah

@SpartanDonut I don't know my RAIDs too well, but I think you want two very similar drives

Joe
ive been cheaping out with 2 64g older gens

Yeah. same exact model number

Joe
1 for windows 1 for game

7:34 PM
@AttackingHobo yeah, and if you've got an existing slightly older drive, you may not be able to find the same one. And if you do, it might be cheaper & faster to just forget about and get a single bigger/faster drive

@JohnMcDonald not really

Well I'm buying the wife a new PC... probably next month so I'm not too worried on it right now

1tb vs 2 512 samsung is same exact price
but with raid 0 you get double perf

@Joe I pretty sure I'm giong to end up with the digital storm
@AttackingHobo wikipedia says you are a liar

@SpartanDonut desktop or laptop?

7:38 PM
@AttackingHobo desktop

@SpartanDonut what about?

@AttackingHobo Well... a new 1TB is probably faster than an old 512MB, but after RAID, the 512s will likely be faster
Depends how old the 512 is, no?

Performance may vary, basically.

Im talking about buying new.

Joe
7:39 PM
@SpartanDonut actually since i asked my buddy about his... ive been considering that very much as well

@SpartanDonut oh sure. Random access small files might not change too much, but sequential reads for large files will be huuuuge

ah, I'm talking about upgrading Spartan's existing 512

Joe
actually considering buying 2 of the lower end systems, and making my fiance start gaming again

@SpartanDonut you gonna build, or buy?

@AttackingHobo Buy. Probably this guy - digitalstormonline.com/bolt-ii.asp
Looking for something with a small form factor and so I think buying outright is the most appropriate option at this time
I need to do a little more shopping around... make sure there aren't any self proclaimed steam machines out that are reasonably priced I've not considered but that's the one I'm currently looking at

7:43 PM
@SpartanDonut :/ why the small form factor?

Go big or go home! ;)

jeez give me that budget and I can get you parted out for a beast rig

Or I could give myself that budget without the small form factor requirement and do just as fine

@SpartanDonut why the small form factor though?

Small desk / computer area
Small living space, etc.

7:47 PM
16 gigs max supported? :/
You could either hide the rig. or you could have the rig on your desk with monitor on top

Hide the rig... in the new hole in the wall we're going to install especially for this computer?

Joe
damn

It's for my wife... she doesn't need 32GB+ of RAM

Joe
half of me doesnt want to bother building another machine and troubleshooting it
the other half does not want to spend 2k+ for the parts i want

The PC itself is probably already too much for her

7:50 PM
@Joe I have magic hands. last two rigs I built seem to be super solid so far

Joe
intel nvidia?

My work rig had over 90 days of uptime till the building had a power failure over a weekend
90 continous days
right now its only at 10
but still really solid.
@Joe yeah

Pip
@SpartanDonut <3 Win8.1

well my work rig is just intel. no dedicated vid card... yet
new one I built is intel nvidia
i7 5930k w/ 16gigs ddr4 quad channel ram @ 2600mhz. two intel 730 ssds 250gigs each raid-0. nvidia 750 2 gigs
hexa core intel is a sight to behold

Joe
what mobo brand do you run?

7:54 PM
ASROCK for my work one. and the new one I built for a client is MSI
8 usb3. 2 usb2. + 2 more usb2 on front of pc
That case is really nice btw. the pannels kind of have hinges instead of sliding
hate sliding pannels they always get deformed and never sit right
@SpartanDonut lol just realized how close in size the one I built are to those "small form factor" ones you linked

Joe
now im contemplating that + case + existing 680 i have sitting on my desk
+ PSU
could make an insane machine for 1500...

1.9 inches taller. 3.9 inches longer. and 3.3 inches deeper for the rig I built
@Joe literal same combo for the pc I just built

Joe
maybe i just buy a clone of the 680 i have...
and sli the thing

You also get a free razor mouse
SLI is never worth it

Joe
1 better card > 2 shite ones?

8:02 PM
sli has a shitload of issues

hahaha

stuttering, more latency, bullshit compatibility. lower perf in some games due to bugs

@AttackingHobo different case then the one you linked or the same?

Shit Load of Issues.

same case

8:03 PM
that's like W8 (if Windows 8 were slow)

Joe
whats a copy of win 7 going to run me

@SpartanDonut it doesn't have a behind mobo routing for power

Joe
or doi just grab w8

@Joe get win8
@Almo is just a crazy person don't listen to him

Pip
yeah, get win 8
actually, get 8.1

8:04 PM
There are a few things that may bother you, but they can be tweaked if you don't like it

16.4 x 4.4 x 14.1 vs
18.3 x 8.1 x 18.0
The digital storm is significantly smaller =/

did anybody miss it that AH said sli has a shitload of issues? SLI: Shit Load of Issues.

Especially if you math it out

hahahahahah

The half width is kind of what does it

8:05 PM
come on man that was fucking funny

Looks like a VCR or Console sitting somewhere

@Almo ROFL hahaha didn't even see that. Perfect hough.

that's one reason it was funny; didn't look intentional

@SpartanDonut w/e have fun with your comically overpriced, slow, "low profile" water cooler computer

No need to be a jerk. Different people have different requirements in things they need. Sorry you don't see it that way.

8:06 PM
I see it that way.

Just because you don't put value on small form factor doesn't mean I don't

Joe
i like the idea of not having to build my new system and the warrentee on digital storm looked really nice

ah. the trashcan

love my trash can

Joe
8:07 PM
you an owner almo?

yeah

Joe
how it is

fucking rules man
silent, boots in 7 seconds
panel lights up when you turn it to plug something in
easy to steal though
need to put some kind of lock on it
the other mac is 65 pounds, and harder to make off with
but it was easy to attach to the desk with a bicycle lock
this one doesn't have anything really to attach to

MLM
No kennsington lock?

this is the thing
just need to get one.

8:10 PM
@Almo Man I could build a god++++ tier machine for those budgets

with a piece of shit OS
will not have this argument with you penny-pinchers again

@Almo Thems fightin words
lol

could even hackentosh it too and use a trashcan from ikea for the case

looks like it's time to get the lock

Pip
Win > OSx. end of story :)
@AttackingHobo true, lol

8:11 PM
previously I had to pay $30 shipping to get it

To be fair "piece of shit OS" is a horrible argument and you know it. Let's settle for "not the OS of my preference" and call it day shall we?

that doesn't cut it with those guys

I would build that mother with dual socket xeon mobo

I've tried being reasonable and explaining what I don't like about windows

dual 6 core intels

8:11 PM
And how big would it be?

and I just get ridiculed for it

however big teh first trashcan I find is.

so I'll just say "piece of shit OS" and be done with it. :)

@Almo Alright. I'll secretly know what you mean ;)

Good ;)

Q: What makes a game jam worth participating in?

EthanI'm looking to start my own game jam competition which would encourage people to actually finish a game (I've read a lot of game devs often procrastinate, or never finish a game because they have better ideas along the line). However, as easy as such a thing might be to setup I want to make sure ...

hmm interesting question...
subjective again, but seems on-topic

Pip
8:14 PM
omfg... apparently I can open a link in new tab with middle click.. since when?
awesome

@Pip I actually started a recent discussion on this very topic

Pip
cool

I was like... so I learned this... who the hell middle clicks? And basically everyone does and I'm the weirdo =/

MLM
Sep 2 at 18:03, by SpartanDonut
Poll: Middle click or Ctrl+Click to open a link in a new tab?

woa that's fucking cool
I never middle-click

Pip
8:16 PM
I do a lot, but never noticed this before

middle clicking is not comfortable for me and it feels... unstable

Pip
mostly I right click, actually

MLM
@Pip slow-poke

Pip
and select the option
yeah :P
I have a finger on each mouse button

8:19 PM
@Pip since forever

Pip
lol
Anyone else like that though? with a finger on each mouse button?
just feels comfortable to me
with this 5+ year old crappy mouse that I love so much

No sir
Pointer and middle on left and right buttons. Ring and pinky resting on the right side, thumb on the left

Pip
I have a finger on each side and a finger on each button, usually
sometimes pointer and middle on the left, but not usually

@Almo that movie is amazing

MLM
@SpartanDonut My hand rests the same as Spartan

8:22 PM
And then my left hand rests to the right of my keyboard... with a rather interesting grip on the keys... I think a photo will best show this.

Joe
@SpartanDonut maybe its time for a 5 button mouse...

@Joe only 5?

Joe
in the shape of a hand
so you have have to spend calories to do things

That's just silly

I've kind of want one of those MMO mouses with those macro buttons so I can use them for programming and other work.

Joe
8:26 PM
5 button mouse by joe... "because moving muscles is tedius and menial"

Pip
lol
@AttackingHobo yeah, I kinda want one with at least a couple buttons too
uh... apparently I have no friends on LoL.... wtf

@SpartanDonut heh :) it's funny alright.

This is the death grip I hold on my keyboard while browsing the internets. Pardon the shitty work keyboard
Not entirely sure why...

Joe
im constantly perpetually stuck in WASD battle stations... always now
mmos have ruined my brain

If I used alt+tab all the time I'd have an excuse but I find the task bar to be way more efficient for quite some time now

8:35 PM
i rest my hand with index on c or f, middle on e, ring on q and pinky up against the capslock button
comes from RTSs I think

Please tell me you are lying to us

MLM
I normally rest on ctrl and c

alt-tab is a pain because the order of the icons shifts depending on how recently you used it

can't learn how far the icons are from each other
so I don't use it either

MLM
8:37 PM
taskbar ftw. Always takes multiple tries when coming out of a game when using alt-tab
for me

or for those like me who don't pay attention to the order they do things in... it's seemingly random ;)

hahah yeah

I think my grip is an odd combination of comfort and security
My hand is relaxed on the desk but it's still touching keys so that it knows where it is and can easily find anything it needs

@SpartanDonut depends what I am doing really. Sometimes I just have both hands on the kb and use my trackpoint for mousing
Alt tab is great for switching back and forth between a few apps
alt tab + arrow keys is also nice
well on win8 that is. Dont know if win 7 can do that

Pip
idk either

8:52 PM
Server 2008 R2 can do it so I'm guessing Win 7 can
Assuming its nothing fancier than navigating the little alt+tab box in all directions as opposed to just forward

sup nerds

@Joe but you should use the WERD. better if you walk forward a lot
also gives you q,a,z for your pinky
developed that for UT and Q3

Joe
interesting... ive unbound S alot as backwards because is rarely ever necessary
but thats interesting

one Q3 map maker's name was NoSKey

@Joe people don't expect it
in cs backwards air strafe is kind of confusing for enemies

8:58 PM
@SpartanDonut, @JohnMcDonald You guys can now kick people from chat if they're out of line: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/229905/…

o7
(you are late to the club on that one :P)

Oh

No worries. Just teasing ya
Alex sent me an IM on steam the day it was posted telling me to get my ban finger ready lol

Don't worry, I'll take it away from you, then give it back and be the first to tell you about it.

Oh there we go

9:01 PM
Irate NSA staffer doesn't like being filmed in public, for some reason. firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/09/17/…

oh boy

not satire

Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, in "The Imitation Game".

ok. So is there an AR plugin for unity that doesn't fucking suck balls?

They're finally making a movie about Alan Turing!
and it's coming out the day before my birthday!

9:04 PM
And here I am waiting for Into the Woods to come out... lol

Well, I'm a software engineer primarily, so Alan Turing is one of those Ancient Ones that I was trained to look up to.

Is it weird that I look up to more immediate peers and mentors than some person I've never met?
Like... I just don't care about pretty much any big name in the games or computing

Alan was pretty fucking smart

It's like he did that? ok cool.
And that's where it ends
Anyway time to get going. Later all.

purchase

9:08 PM
Plus Alan Turing got a raw deal when he was alive. Since he was gay he was treated very poorly, even with all of his awesome contributions to computer science.

and that is probably what will make the movie fun. I mean the movie itself might be great and all, but I want to see the christians get angry and say he deserved it all.
I'll be laughing

Pip
@SpartanDonut latah

@IcyDefiance Taking the low ground isn't the ideal route.

Thats a cool image of Jesus
like the style and pose

9:12 PM
@Byte56 what low ground? I'm not provoking anything. I just like watching people who make themselves look like assholes. Just like the news article I linked a few minutes ago with the NSA employee.

BTW: halos come from Rome. They used them to indicate people of stature. Ended up in religion because Constantine made Chritianity the official religion of the Roman Empire.

interesting

I believe in this case, the high ground would be forgiving and understanding that people make mistakes. Not laughing at their mistakes or rubbing their faces in it.

and most of our ideas of the devil and hell come from the divine comedy, if I remember right, not the bible
@Byte56 nooo I'm saying christians today will be saying he deserved it. I guarantee this thing will end up on fox news and the church I'm forced to attend will send an angry petition to someone.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
Them getting upset today is the mistake they're making.

9:15 PM
then I have no idea what point you're trying to make

@Byte56 stop being so offended.

That responding to people's wrong beliefs with cynicism doesn't help them change their beliefs.
@AttackingHobo I believe you'll find it's impossible to offend me.

if you're saying I shouldn't oppose people who are being assholes, don't worry. I'd get kicked out of the house if I did that outside of the internet. I totally would if I could, though.
I'll just be laughing in my basement because watching the drama will amuse me

@Byte56 Normally I understand and tolerate mistakes people make, but not when those mistakes are hurting other people.

I'm just saying fighting fire with fire doesn't put the fire out :/
Combat hate with kindness.
6

9:19 PM
@Byte56 I agree that responding with cynicism isn't the right way though.

I've moved far, far beyond trying to put the fire out. It's just not possible. Even my own atheism only happened after several people harshly pointed out how much of an asshole I was being to innocent people.

I imagine more along the lines of boycotts and stuff for the Alan Turning movie. I think for a lot of people, they'll get the impression that what happened was wrong.

Certainly prevent harm to others, but don't respond with harm is all

@Byte56 nothing can change their beliefs at this point.

i tried that approach for years, Byte. It doesn't work. The only thing that will stop an asshole from being an asshole is public humiliation.

9:21 PM
Well, beliefs are changing though, so something is happening.

only among young people, and only because of the internet
no one is changing beliefs, they're just growing up with different ones

who was from Romania here, again?

Alex

Alex

OR we can just nuke it all and start over. I mean if you're going to respond with hate, take it to the max.

9:22 PM
ah. Saw a video on Facebook and immediately thought of him

@IcyDefiance I see a lot of beliefs changing.

Luckily public opinion is changing. The extremists will probably never change their opinion, but hopefully the mass of reasonable people will silence them.

@Byte56 please don't try to equate public humiliation with violence.

Public humiliation isn't required. They can feel shame in private.

9:23 PM
Anti-theism is so much work.

shame doesn't work in private

Joe
for certain people it does... but i dont know if this new generation feels shame in the normal human ways possible as gen y

#YOLO

no, people might be ashamed in private because of something other people saw earlier
but no one is ashamed of things that no one else knows about

That's what I'm saying is that responding to their hate with kindness will make them feel shame in private later. You don't need to rub it in their faces in public.
It's a slow process.

9:26 PM
well now we're just going in circles, and I've made my points
I see no need to reward people who are trying to hurt others
that shit is unacceptable and should not be tolerated at any level

Man I'm just so happy to live in a country where that process has almost been completed, at least on the subject of homosexuality. Anyway, good night everyone!

so jealous, Lokkij :'(

@IcyDefiance because there's less people with hurtful opinions or because you're gay? (actual question, just curious)

I'm not gay, but I am a closet atheist who has been afraid of being kicked out of my house since I was 12

I doubt your parents would have put you up for adoption Icy, to much shame in that.
Maybe they'd have sent you off to boarding school. I'd count that as a win.

Joe
9:31 PM
@IcyDefiance i can relate to this alot, my uncles a priest my family is very religious... personally i find it illogical... i understand the importance of faith, i wish i could find my own, but i havent

@IcyDefiance That sounds pretty horrible. :(

Joe
recently got engaged, and my family is near on the edge of "abandoning us" because of the wedding plans

Come on out to Oregon. We're pretty liberal here in Portland.

crap, my shift is over. I'd love to explain a bit more, but I need food before class.
so I'm out. see y'all later.

@Noctrine It's pretty much exactly like that

I love Portlandia
but I live in a big city with a decently high hipster population
(Milwaukee, WI)
This is a list of neighborhoods of Milwaukee. Two residents of the same neighborhood may describe different neighborhood boundaries, which could be based on ZIP codes, ethnic groupings, or simply personal opinion. Although rooted in real history, neighborhoods remain social constructions, in which seemingly concrete things like boundaries are much rather in flux. This encyclopedic problem is true for all cities but is particularly complicated in Milwaukee when identified neighborhoods can be within other neighborhoods. For instance, Brady Street and East Village are actually inside of the East...

We're recently gentrifying here in Detroit. Well at least downtown, but i'm in the suburbs.
