I think you're gonna have to add some NLP features
like build an anchor to tell them when they have some fixed amount of time, like a countdown over a few steps starting from maybe 200ms away, perhaps by flashing some icon sequence in their peripheral vision
so that way, you can help tune the user onto the beat, so you don't have to delay their actions much

Ideally, have a half-beat tolerance so that if the user is slightly off beat, there is zero extra lag, and the animation is just played at 101% speed maybe
since it would start close enough to call "on beat", and would only get more perfectly in time until the end when it's exact

@Noctrine hey also, if there are vocals or something that's really hard to do procedurally, there are always libraries like SoundTouch so time scaling without pitch shifting in realtime is actually reasonable these days
