12:07 AM
Can anybody think of a more efficient mining technique than this?
It's very important that I have no more than 1 (if any) blocks that ore out of sight.
Emerald, for example, usually appears in one block at a time.

jzx
I think that's the limit as far as dig/view coverage goes

@jzx Well, you also want to maximize the amount of blocks visible per block removed. If I use the morph mod, I could turn into a chicken ore something to do my mining. Then I could dig 1x1 shafts, giving me 4 blocks for every block that I dig.

looks good. You're really just trying to maximize the number of new blocks revealed per block dug, and digging straight ahead in a single tunnel like that is best (4/dig)
If you also dig 1/1 out, the first block will give 1 new block, then each after will give 5. So, yeah, do that

Actually it just gives 4, since you don't count the blocks that you're digging.

jzx
2 for 6 usually, 1 for 4 as a chicken

12:16 AM
after the first block in a 1x1 shaft, you're going to reveal 5 new blocks (top, bottom, left, right, and back), But then you'll be digging the back one? is that your consideration?

Oops.
Wait, NVM.

The method I'm thinking of won't be efficient at looking at all blocks in an area, but it'll be faster to reveal new blocks in the area (leaving behind lots of holes)

Aidan, how many blocks of ore that are out of sight doesn't matter unless you're trying to minimize the size of your mine. The whole map is out of sight.

You can dig 3 out from your current spot, right? Or is it 4?

If you're only trying to maximize the speed of ore discovery, then all that matters is the amount of new blocks you uncover with each block you mine.

12:20 AM
@IcyDefiance I want to maximize the amount that is visible per block dug.
And I just realized that you actually want to maximize the perimeter per area.
Wait, maybe.

Best is 1x2 tunnels that you can walk through with 1x1 holes to the sides that go out as far as you can dig and exactly 2 blocks at the back of your 1x1 hole should be the back of the adjacent hole

why stack the tunnels anyway? just keep expanding the mine to the side.

#1112111##1112111#

ooh I like that
major pain to actually do, but should be perfect efficiency.

# = rock, 2 = 2-tall area, 1 = 1-tall area. The bottom of the screen would be the "main" shaft, top-down
could probably dig up too, if you weren't concerned with lava or water

12:26 AM
btw Aidan, are you playing on Lasse's server or something else?

Slightly more compressed:

There's a bunch of stuff that isn't visible.

Lots of wasted physical space, but big time savings if you're digging for stuff
Your chances of getting good stuff is identical at each location, so the fact that you miss stuff here isn't of importance imo
More revealed blocks/min this way, :)

Yeah, but you also have to consider walking distance.
It affects how much food you consume.
I'll just dig all of it.
:P

12:31 AM
yeah, if you're concerned about seeing every last block, I think your original pattern was pretty good

Since it only misses a few.

There might be better, but I can't think of one off the top of my head

@JohnMcDonald Isn't the most perimeter per area the most efficient?

I assume your goal is to find the rare resources right?

I think it is.
Everything really.

12:32 AM
Most perimeter?

I am thinking in terms of the 2D pattern.

Well, you're looking for the largest increase revealed area per block dug
iirc, it takes a while to dig, and that's the variable I'm trying to decrease

So digging something like this:
#####
#000#
#000#
#000#
#####
Wouldn't be efficient since that middle block doesn't do anything.

Yes, but also, if you leave the middle block, ALL of the others will be slightly less efficient because you already know what the middle block is and they are only revealing the sides

And plus the other two blocks in the middle row are only showing one block.

12:40 AM
In a 2D world, assuming 1 side is already accessible, your optimum # of new blocks per dig would be 3.
In 3D, that "best" number is 5
That's 5 new blocks with a single dig.
You want to aim for at least 3 new blocks per dig if possible

@JohnMcDonald But if you are going to dig those blocks out anyways, what does it matter? It only matters when you stop digging in that shaft.

I think the two are related, you're still looking for the fewest number of digs per revealed surface area

So is 1x1 shaft the best?

The best for finding resources with the fewest digs, yes
Considering resource distributions, probably:

####2#######2####
####2####HHH2HHH#
#LLL2LLL####2####

# = rock
2 = 2-high
L = 1-high, at foot level
H = 1-high, at head level
Better chance of running into veins, but same chance of running into single-cube resources @AidanMueller

Hey Guys does anyone quickly know if java script and java order precedence are the same?

12:55 AM
They should be similar because I think it's Math that sets the precedence, not the language, but I could be wrong.
I always use parenthesis if/when it's ambiguous

Hard drive reorganization time! Moving games off my SSD
One day I'll purchase more SSD space.... stares off into horizon One day....

math doesn't set precedence for all operators found in programming (for example, postfix operators taking precedence over unary operators, of which prefix is a part)
but they are pretty much the same
JavaScript just has a LOT more operators
compare these, @androidmaster:
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/operators.html
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Operators/Operator_Precedence

heh, ic
yeah, I keep forgetting that programming != math

Thanks for the links Icy
I just need to check if
Java:
variableOne += 9 * timeLasped; variableTwo += 9 * timeLasped; </br>was the same as varia</br>bleOne = variableTwo += 9 * timeLasped;

the second one is probably valid, but I'd use the first one anyway
waaay more readable

1:03 AM
Wait nvm i have to get off the computer my mom is telling me its too late

> The laying of land mines has inadvertently led to a positive development in the Falkland Islands. Mine fields laid near the sea during the Falklands War have become favorite places for penguins, which do not weigh enough to detonate the mines. Therefore, they can breed safely, free of human intrusion. These odd sanctuaries have proven so popular and lucrative for ecotourism that efforts exist to prevent removal of the mines.
thought that was interesting

jzx
Huh, I guess that's one approach to conservation.

D: no chat for 20 mins?

1:19 AM
THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!!

Why?! Why have you foresaken us GDSE gods!

On second thought... is it over?

1:47 AM
It's all over!

:) Exciting, 5 retweets (2 confirmed bots + 3 possible humans) for a simple Skippy Fish screenshot
Most ever for me
F5 ..... F5....

2:02 AM
high five
So far I'm really liking illustrator

I really like working with vector lines over raster based ones
I'm trying to come up with some brushes that I like

Big time. SVG is the way to go
Skipper the fish, and the shark are also SVG

I got inkscape, only thing I'm missing is artistic eye

@JohnMcDonald Not bad.

2:06 AM
Inkscape is great imo

I liked the user interface of illustrator more
The only problem I had with it is that it costs money

I liked what InkScape had to offer but I found the app hard to use other than point based manipulation

I haven't tried both, so I can't compare

Also the filters on inkscape are much harder to work with

Jumping in... I've got a bit to learn about illustrator but its really table (pen) friendly

2:08 AM
Never tried it with a drawing board...

what the hell... linux mint installer keeps crashing with no error message, and there is nothing on google to help with the problem...mostly because there's no error message.
linux seriously despises me

at which point it crashes?

@Icy You have so many problems with linux... Why do you keep working for it?

@IcyDefiance Try a different version.
Ok, that wasn't a question. That was embarrassing.

2:12 AM
@Lasse I'll do it again, I forget exactly what it says. it was trying to load a file or something like that. I've already looked at the md5 thing and it's right, so...
@AidanMueller yeah, I could try an older version... don't want to, but meh, maybe I can update after it's installed

HBO go has a problem with their video pausing and I know what the bug is and what causes it because I experienced the same bug with my game jam game.

@SpartanDonut OOooo, yeah.

Funny how programming teaches you such abstract things like that

@hasherr It also really starts to get to you: WHY DID THEY DO THIS!~ WTF!!?!

Seriously, I sometimes think I'm going crazy with these things.

2:14 AM
WHY DO GAMES USE WEAPON WHEELS!~ WTF!!?!
I know what you mean
nods wisely

I like weapon wheels :(

@IcyDefiance I had this weird glitch when I was installing a Debian VM. It simply wouldn't get past a certain step. I googled and googled - nothing. Got this idea: Herp derp, every installation tutorial is on a previous version, derp, I should install an old version - it worked!
@IcyDefiance Porque los wheels de weapons son cool?

God damn your spanish is bad

LOL.
I am just lacking a vocabulary.

"Because the weapon wheels are cool?" is what you roughly just said...

2:16 AM
Yeah.

it's better spanish than my spanish

I really should just look at the top 300 most used words.

Pienso que los wheels de wepones son cool.

That would help with pretty much any language.

all you need in finland is "joo"

jzx
2:19 AM
Debido a las cosas redondas que tienen armamentos en ellos son excepcionalmente agradable?

this guy from czech always said "joo" when someone came by and talked to him
and only once someone tried to hit him

@hasherr What does pienso mean?

so you can be really successful with that

@Aidan I think

OK.
Thx.

2:20 AM
Pensar = to think
It's a boot though, so you gotta sub the io for e
and then add the 'o'

@hasherr Which español are you going into?

I think I'll stay paused

@OutlawLemur Spanish 4

Nice.... I'm only going to 3

2:23 AM
What I like about spanish, is that the words are related:
Dental = dental
Dientes = teeth
then you also have the word "de", which to my understanding, lets you combine words (also means of)
Sepillo = brush
Un sepillo de dientes = tooth brush

Or from

I hate Spanish.

fyi, "Dent" comes from Latin. (maybe not "dent" but something like "dente")

eg. Soy del mundo

2:24 AM
Because it's the class that I struggle the most with
And it's also the one that I give the least shits about

Ever heard of Rosetta stone?

So grade goes super down and I get yelled at for being 'lazy' and spending my time doing worthless things like programming.
Idiot language teacher.
Second year spanish language teacher made me hate learning it.

Last year my spanish teacher was super cool and we played video games with him during school haha
This year it was a marine.... That was a shock

Yeah, times change. Often for the worse, and often for much worse. It's seldom that I have such a bad experience that it makes me want to quit something altogether and never go back.
Some people just like to ruin things for other people though.

2:27 AM
lol one of my basketball coaches was in the national guard
that was fun

@Icy Every morning our teacher makes us do bodyweight exercises

...in spanish class?

Haha yeah

@hasherr Could help explain to me the valid usages of que? Is there anything that the definitions on the right didn't cover?

2:34 AM
Que can mean 'that'
But it has a large part in subjunctive sentences
Have you learned subjunctives?

Look them up, I couldn't explain them to you.

With RS you don't really have anything explained to you. I have only done one level.
OK thx.

MLM
Duolingo seems like the best thing on the market (and it's free) to learn languages. I am slowly working through the German course

German kind of sucks.

2:36 AM
@MLM Do you find it useful in identifying roots of words

warumm?

@MLM I have also started using that to learn Spanish, :)
@OutlawLemur No
It introduces spanish verbs with no notion that they are conjugated, so... word roots are right out

I know latin would be much more helpful for that, but english does derive from german... I suppose you would have to have a very extensive german vocabulary for that

MLM
It is easy enough to figure out, just repetition and strengthening. They sometimes explain the conjugation rules and stuff below the lesson before you start it
I never read it though

The speaking portion never works for me, does it work for you @MLM?

MLM
2:40 AM
@JohnMcDonald I just disable it. It worked fine but I didn't want to talk in front of people

@Lasse Wiel der sind vielen worten für die gleiche ding.

@MLM Fair enough

MLM
@AidanMueller Many the very many some for the ding
Close? :P

Ding = thing

@AidanMueller Genau wie in finnisch, aber es ist einfacher

2:41 AM
But I forgot to capitalize all of the nouns.

okay I copypasted that from google translate, I can't really speak german

MLM
Precise how in finish, but it is dumb. Close?

LOL.
Mein isn't that good anyways.
All nouns in german are capitalized.

@MLM just like finnish, but it's easier

I think that's pretty stupid.
Capitalization is pretty dumb in general. Though it does help separate sentences. Other than that though, it's useless.

MLM
2:43 AM
I really like that
Makes things stand out

You mean the nouns?

MLM
have some structure in the paragraphs
Ye. I think capitalization should be subjective to how it makes the sentence look, in order to make it easier to read and skim

I don't know. It can be confusing, that's all.
You can forget about capitalization in Klingon, because h and H are different letters.
Although if you insist on using the official alphabet, there isn't really any capitalization.

I didn't know you can write klingon with english alphabet

Yeah. You can.
Interestingly, " ' " is considered a letter.
You don't pronounce it though.

2:45 AM
koplah
or something
or was it k'plah

I think you mean Qapla'?

oh yes that

Today is a good day to learn tlhIngan Hol.

indeed

3:03 AM
@AidanMueller ;( is it sad that I recognize that?

what the heeeellll. I tried a couple different things with this mint installation that I found on google, nothing worked, so I just tried the installation normally one more time to get the exact error code again and it worked perfectly.
so confused :'(
I think it decided not to work for an hour just to spite me
aaaaand now I just get a black screen when booting. no grub or anything.
fucking linux

:(
btw, How are the "ideal" font sizes determined? Eg: 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 30, 36, 42 etc
Or am I just imagining things? I was using 25, and it was doing some interesting things, but changing it to 24 fixed everything
I'm probably imagining things, ignore me
sigh PhoneGap's Media object doesn't have a global mute.

MLM
3:20 AM
Depends on the font

@IcyDefiance You suck at linux man :(
Also, "Thrones, yeah, game of thrones, yeah, game of thrones, thrones, yeah, game of thrones, yeah, GAME OF FUCKING THRONES"

MLM
@JohnMcDonald For example: jsfiddle.net/MadLittleMods/6BgYC - you can see that those 3 fonts look good at different sizes

:/ fun
Next you'll tell me it's different on different computers

MLM
@JohnMcDonald Sometimes different between browsers but that is mainly the aliasing

What a relief

3:29 AM
@JohnMcDonald Why would it be sad?
LOL, I just mined a bunch of gold with my stone pick...:(
I think it was at least three blocks.

It's been so long since I've played, I guess that means your pick is dead?

okay, now I got grub to appear...and now I'm getting a black screen after grub! :D

aaahhh, what a mess:

Q: Should a toggle button show its current state or the state to which it will change?

Mike BrownI have a quick question about buttons that toggle between two states. (Think Play/Pause, or Shuffle/Regular Play.) As the title says, should the toggle show it's current state or the state to which it will transition? I think people are used to the Play/Pause convention. But the Shuffle/Regular ...

@JohnMcDonald Dead? No it means that I didn't get anything out of it. It just got wasted.

Oh bummer
Clear enough?

MLM
3:48 AM
@JohnMcDonald Looks clear

Without the 3rd icon, it might lose its power though, :/

4:09 AM
There are 10 types of people in this world - those that know binary, those that don't, and those that weren't expecting a base 3 joke.

yesterday, it was 666 :D
so... where do I claim my prize?

@snake5 You don't get one. I am only amused when it's a power of two:

4:26 AM
@snake5 ^
If I was smart, I could have made it 32 consecutive.
Perhaps I could do like 512 64 consecutive or something?

possibly but that would take some time
256 more days

That was already a while ago.

Q: "how to get started making a game" faq link

Petr AbdulinWhile offtopic, people keep asking questions in subject. I think that Help Center > Asking page can be improved a bit, by linking how to get started making a game to this page. During my personal experience in starting with gamedev I can say that this page is, at least, a very good starting point...

Is it the 24th still on SE? Said a year ago today? lol
Apparently not.... it's the 25th on SE already D:

@JohnMcDonald Hah. I am 99% sure that I never saw you post that.
Actually I may.
But I think I saw it before though.

@SpartanDonut It's weird, I know you were supposed to replace our dear friend Todders, but I still haven't been able to transfer my memories of him to you.

Sorry to hear that

Well, I'm not going to go to bed at 2 again. So see yas.

Should a bullet be an entity of a particle?

depends on game design
option A: bullet is an entity that flies through the world, no particles added
option B: bullet is a particle since shooting is done with exactly one hit test at the right time
it could also be both but then it would get a bit messy
or none, but then the bullet is invisible and player loses a visual feedback element
though if you mean that bullet could be rendered with one particle then it can be an entity either way

Jon
10:45 AM
I personally Pool projectiles
You can call it a particle if you wish, since it has a lifespan

yeah, me too
but I don't think it's a really cool idea from the start since I spent a lot of time making the perfect bullet system, just to find out it wasn't really all that useful later

hey @snake5

hi

sup?

nothing much, crunching bugs at work

11:01 AM
You work as...

web developer by day, game/engine/tools developer by night
:D
it's daytime here

here too
1 PM

Jon
how old are you @snake5?

21

Jon
you in school?

11:11 AM
nope

Jon
school was cool in college -- gave me time to study the field
and it provided me with some tools I wouldn't of had or been able to afford

@Jon like what tools?
also, how much did college cost?

Jon
a couple of good teachers, electronics lab
I forget how much it cost
close to 10,000 or something

seems expensive, considering that at least hundreds of people are paying the same

Jon
yeah its a major scam
doesn't matter, its essentially a requirement to get a job nowadays anyways
The debt is also non-defaultable, so you can go bankrupt, but the dept stays
Government treats the young like a resource

11:18 AM
@Jon not really
the requirement is to spend enough time with the trade
decent companies don't bother much with papers

Jon
hey whatever you say

well, that's how I and many of the people I know got their jobs
I have no papers that would interest HR sickos :D
just skill, a lot of it

Jon
I get that, but I spent time with the trade, and I've also spent 4 years studying the trade through refined programs
who looks better?
the one that asks for the least amount of money.

@Jon depends on who we ask
it's a bit of a risk, I know
one worth taking, though
saves from a lot of debt
though not in this country
I can actually crunch CS degrees here for free
I just don't want to

Jon
are you doing the freelance thing?

11:25 AM
for some reason there's a big distinction between CS and practical programming
no, I have a job
well, I do a bit of freelance stuff but it's not my main source of income
a very tiny bit
