1:33 PM
> Congratulations!
> Your Microsoft account is confirmed and activated in DreamSpark.
That's the weirdest sign-in message.

DreamSpark reconfirms your educational status every once in a while

But all I did was log in :P

I assume it managed to auto confirm somehow
My school I had to confirm a valid email address
Yours must be magical

It kinda is :P

"I have used the code of Krishan, In this piece of code I get a stack overflow javascript error, by adding the is(':checked') functionality inside the check_node.jstree event it will work better."
I don't know if you guys do reviews tasks on SE, but I think the tests are pretty funny.
also smart

1:37 PM
"The code of Krishan", sounds almost spiritual.

for those who don't know when you're reviewing posts, it periodically throws you a junk one just to see if you're paying attention
woa
that wasn't a test
that was an actual edit :o
i guess it does sort of make more sense than the usual tests
but "code of Krishnan" hahaha

1:48 PM
Almo... it seems I'm doomed to just never play EVE.
I can't do it D:
I thoroughly enjoyed a long night of Reaper of Souls last night though :D

I just booted up EVE :P
I swear, it updates every time I start the launcher.

Collecting rift shards is a bit tedious but still not horrible... but the rift runs or whatever they're called themselves.... WOOO! It's like a randomly generated cow level every time you do one.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager this last update was the "summer expansion"
many many updates are small couple-meg ones
this was a big one
@SpartanDonut eve takes a special kind of dedication :)

I'm no way dedicated enough.

were I not boss of a functioning organization, I'd probably have quit long ago

1:52 PM
I just like mucking around. I have a ton of assets just gathering dust.

lots of people do
:)
I have surprisingly little junk, but I've never been rich
mainly I have some ships I never use because I don't go out in a ship that often

I have a fitted Orca and the skills to go with like Industrial Command Ships 5, but I never use it.
It's sort of silly.

I have an HAC (245 mil) Logistics (maybe 500 mil) a Nightmare (1.6 bil) Navy Apocalypse (600m) and various assorted other less-expensive ships around.

I think an Itty 5 is the best ship I've got...

Jon
i've got nothing

1:54 PM
I have a Cal Navy Raven for mission running. I like shield tanked missile boats.
Gets a bit boring at times though. :P

I has a Vexor for drones

That made me chuckle a bit.
Lots of changes since I last played. :P
Luckily the ships only check the top skills, not the steps between, so even though I'm technically not skilled to fly the Orca, I can just fine.

I can go 5200 m/s in it without overloading the MWD rack.
"If you could fly it then, you can fly it now." is one of CCP's mantras
they never ever take away the ability to fly something with skill changes.
smart actually
@SpartanDonut vexor good shit
@William'MindWorX'Mariager a pal of mine joined, went straight for that, and bored himself right out of the game

Certainly a good starter ship considering the price
Versatile too

I was in one of those quite a while ago

2:00 PM
dang it, is EVE the new chat game now? maybe I should join too...

Can participate in mining ops with it if desired

eve goes through short periods of being the chat game
then everyone gets put off by it. :)
except me

@Almo Hehe, yup, that's invulnerability for you :P

I opened the client once a few weeks ago... that was the end of this months try of it lol

Great concept. Boring execution. :P

2:02 PM
it was designed to work. which requires its non-piloting-the-ship combat style.

Hey guys. I know a little bit of C and some Python, but otherwise I have no programming skills. I have, however, some 3d modelling skills. Having said all that, I wanted to try out - as a minor side project - creating a 3d game (nothing too fancy, really). Would you guys recommend me learning some particular language and coding a game, or would something like UDK be a good place to start for an absolute beginner?

if combat were limited to 10 at a time, sure you could fly the ships. but you can get over a thousand people in one place fighting, and that just becomes impossible.
so eve's about something else, which is all the political and economic manuvering.
so win7 has convinced itself my headphones are not plugged in
wtf

@JNat UDK is a lot more harder to get into than UE4 on the "programming" side. UDK has visual scripting, Kismet, and UE4 has new and improved "Blueprints" - needless to say if you can swing $20 and are set on Unreal you can accomplish a lot without touching a line of code by using UE4 and Blueprints

in sound control panel I can't select speakers.

If you can't swing the $20 I'd say go for Unity as the coding is easier to get into

2:04 PM
good answer todders

I see, thanks

Also I know @Joe is looking for artists to prototype games with. You could possibly team up with somebody if you are open to such a thing

I find this to fix it at Tom's Hardware
"now visit the motherboard manufacturer or computer manufacturer's website
look up your computer drivers by model number
download the latest audio drivers, save on the desktop...
turn the antivirus off,
if you have multiple security programs installed, turn them all off
(your driver may not install if security systems are turned on)
now load your new audio driver, restart, turn the antivirus back on. :

Joe specifically is looking for small portfolio pieces that could be completed in about a months time or so
If I remember correctly

Oh that's cool. I'm not sure I could be of help, though

2:06 PM
3D modeling is potentially of help. I don't know where your skills actually fall though. Food for thought anyway

@SpartanDonut I have a masters in architecture, and I've used some 3d modelling programs. I supposed transitioning from those the ones used for games shouldn't be too hard

mind mentioning the programs you used?

@IcyDefiance sketchup and rhinoceros are the only relevant ones, actually
I think :P

ak a restart fixed it. :)

@Almo Yeah I think the Toms Hardware fix is only relevant if it was never working / those drivers were never installed

2:11 PM
yeah
makes sense
:)

If a reboot didn't fix it I'd have been all "Reinstall Windows!"

:D
at work :(

@JNat I think both of those can work just fine for games.

cool

I don't know enough to give you pro/con stuff, just enough to say they should work

user92578
2:35 PM
Does someone know what causes SDL2 to make the black/blue lines to appear if the game is running in a "virtual resolution"?

user92578

user92578
This only happens if I run the game in a window that's size isn't the resolution of the window

that is strange...
no idea why it would happen

user92578
also really annoying

user92578
My bullets are affected by ladders :DDD

user92578
2:56 PM
Why can't I get my hitbox offsetting to work?

Math is hard

user92578
yeah

user92578
also collisions

@Tyyppi_77 I suspect it's the same issue I had with my tile based game in cocos2d-x

user92578
Oh that bug

3:04 PM
are those lines the border of tiles?
@Tyyppi_77 so what was the problem?

user92578
I fixed the collision offset

user92578
not the lines

user92578
@Ali.S yeah

user92578
So how do I fix? :)

in my case, I ended up writing a custom vertex shader, to make sure edges of tiles are exactly on the integer values
attribute vec4 a_position;
attribute vec4 a_texcoord;

uniform vec2 u_InvTextureSize;
uniform vec2 u_HalfActualWindowSize;

varying vec2 v_texCoord;

void main()
{
    vec2 k1 = vec2(a_position.z,-a_position.w);
	vec2 k2 = vec2(a_position.z,1.0-a_position.w);
	gl_Position = CC_MVPMatrix * vec4(a_position.xy,0.0 ,1.0);
	vec2 a = floor(gl_Position.xy * u_HalfActualWindowSize + k1 * a_texcoord.zw) / u_HalfActualWindowSize - vec2(0.001,0.001);
	vec2 b = ceil(gl_Position.xy * u_HalfActualWindowSize + k1 * a_texcoord.zw) / u_HalfActualWindowSize + vec2(0.001,0.001);

3:07 PM
hmm, doesn't look like a tile/int issue. Is it @Tyyppi_77?

it was basically caused by the fact that drawing half a pixel is not going to happend as you expect

Like... are those lines all along the edges of the tiles?
@Ali.S yeah, I've had that many times
It's just odd that there's only 1 vertical and 1 horizontal line
You'd expect the tile-int problem would cause lots of gaps

I thought maybe his tiles are ultra huge!

user92578
@JohnMcDonald Not it's not, because it's caused by the resolution... and the resolution does not affect the tile positions in the game code

@Tyyppi_77 it affects tile Widths/Heights

user92578
3:11 PM
That's true, but that's SDLs job, not mine

user92578
So an SDL Bug?

Could be, but I don't know
Are these lines along tile edges?

it's not SDLs job to round those width/height to the nearest integer
it only scales them

user92578
@JohnMcDonald Yeah

user92578
@Ali.S But I do not round the widths/heights

3:13 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Then yes, that's the issue. SDL is truncating the widths and heights after scaling and losing 1 pixel

@Tyyppi_77 that's what that shader is doing, I mean you should round them no to get those artifacts

user92578
So how do I round them? Do I need to fiddle with SDL's code?

@JohnMcDonald it's not SDL, but OpenGL truncates them.

@joe maybe this'll help your motivation problem - labnol.org/internet/stop-procrastinating/28598

3:15 PM
@Tyyppi_77 the easiest way is to fix your window width/height

user92578
I'll have to go to eat, brb

@Noctrine Yeah, because nothing says "work harder" more than "you're wasting your life" :/

Wasting it working hard! Go have some fun, kids.
Important comma is important.

hahaha

3:22 PM
Wow, that is cool

Crows are really fricking smart

Trying to catch stray cats that are harrassing our cats, we put a live trap out... caught 2 raccoons at the same time.

@Noctrine those are some subtle experiments that the crows are running on us.

user92578
This is in complete fullscreen, the previous was in maximized:

user92578

3:32 PM
That's more like what I was expecting in the first screenshot
Is there somewhere that you can add 1 to the width of the tiles?

user92578
I don't think so

Well... then you may have to go the shader route like @Ali.S recommends

user92578
If I make the resolution 641, 481, the amount of lines decreases a lot

user92578
@JohnMcDonald But SDL doesn't support shaders...

user92578
Or does it?

3:35 PM
If shaders are not supported, you must find somewhere to add 1 to the widths and heights after scaling

user92578
And that 1 should be added after the resolution scaling, right?

@Ali.S Which is impressive given his terrible vision.

(just edited the line above, but yes)

That also reminds me, I need to make a sport.

*e-sport? ;)

3:37 PM
in-game / world

@Tyyppi_77 it kinda does

user92578
What's kinda?

I'm using OpenGL on top of SDL, but I think SDL itself has some support
I'm searching right now

user92578
I couldn't really found a way to shader the actual SDL2... I have used SDL2 with OpenGL and shaders do of course work there

user92578
3:48 PM
BTW I like it how one of the starred messages is about my incorrect code :)

:)
thrones yeah

@ClassicThunder Seems nothing new has happened since I saw it first time.

Not in terms of the interactive bit. The goal of making it into an os book is new.

user92578
4:17 PM
Is there a tool for specifing a hitbox for an image?

user92578
Like open image -> draw a rectangle over it -> export to xml

Gleed2D should do what you want

Tiled can also do that. Rectangles or polygons.

user92578
Yeah, I was thinking about TileD too

I tried Tiled recently and I had to have done something wrong. I hated it and I managed to kill performance somehow
Also I think its not complete feature wise... I think what I wanted to do with it was in the pipeline but not ready yet
And I really wanted to use it for free form editing as opposed to tile based... Something Gleed2D does fine

4:22 PM
Yeah Tiled is bad for free form stuff.

Oh that said Tyyppi's game is tile based... probably would work fine xD
Sorry about my rant there. Completely forgot the point :)

user92578
Yeah, I'll see if Tiled can do it, and possibly even fork it and customize it to CharacterHitboxSpecifier.exe

user92578
I have to go now, bye!

4:35 PM
So... I'm looking into buying an Android tablet, it'll be my first tablet. Anything I should look for, or look out for?

What do you want to do with it?

Well, I was originally thinking just to test games on, but I'm sure it'll turn into more than that. I hope

MLM
@JohnMcDonald I have a Nexus 7 and I really like it. Powerful, always gets updates fast, compatible with every app I have tried, nice camera, nice high res screen

@JohnMcDonald I got Lenovo's 10" android tablet, and I have nothing bad to say about it

MLM
Another great plus to the Nexus 7 is it is low cost

4:43 PM
so is the lenovo
nexus 7 is 150€ more expensive than my lenovo S6000H :)

MLM
@Lasse Yours was free? Nexus 7 is $229

but compared nexus 7 has double the storage and double the ram and a bit better display
Asus Nexus 7 (2013) Android 4.3 -tablet, 32 GB 4G is 370 € here
Lenovo IdeaTab S6000H 10,1" 16 GB 3G Android 4.2 is 220 €

ic
I've found a used Nexus 7 for ~$70 less than new from Google

MLM
@JohnMcDonald Is it the older Nexus 7? Make sure it is the 2013 edition
Look for a black rim instead of silver around the screen

Alright. Can't tell from the pics because it's in a case
Amazing how high some people are putting used Nexus 7's for

Feels quiet for a friday

yeah! everyone stop working and being productive and start talking!

This is obviously all your fault

nope, I've hit my quota for caused problems today

Jon
7:17 PM
apparently some people were able to snag some before the deal was removed

7:30 PM
woops!

Jon
shit happens.
a lot today
is it friday?

my computer says it is
I remain somewhat unconvinced

Jon
heh
i'm gonna bike downtown
I checked it out today, it is almost 18km to downtown
I can bike it in about 35 minutes
what is my average speed?

30km/h
roughly

Jon
yup
distance over time

7:39 PM
Thats given 18km in 35 minutes is about 1/2km in a single minute

Jon
you just need to work out the units :) ok i'm outta here

Hmm, that's really quite fast

Jon
I thought so too
So i'm running a full blown stopwatch this time
bbl :D

My average is ~20-22km/hr, and I'm whipping past everyone. Usually my max is ~35 unless I'm really trying, in which case ~45-50 for a brief moment
all flat, with a hybrid bike

Is Codepen working for anyone else? Specifically when viewing a pen, all I get is a "Loading..."

7:46 PM
seems to be working for me

MLM
I tried on multiple computers and browsers and it doesn't work. Even with inprivate/incognito. No luck
It works again. Must of pushed a fix

Top 10 Very Very VERY Important Topics to Discuss: blog.jooq.org/2014/07/25/…

Priceless:
> I love JSON. It's giving people opportunities to recreate the dumbest ideas of the XML era but with curly braces instead of angle brackets.—
Tom Morris (@tommorris) July 21, 2014

except JSON is patently easier to parse.
<somename></somename> is kind of a pain and easier to malform
and harder to read at a glance

I'd debate that last one

but both formats have countless libraries for every reasonable language that all make it take the same amount of effort to parse

And that

8:05 PM
hell even SQL can output an XML file, at least in SQL Server

I wasn't going to debate processing power or anything
But I can easily parse XML using .NET

@SpartanDonut ok :)

Is that a challenge? lol

no
:)

haha alright
I'd school you punk
:P

8:06 PM
:D
that has a great spoonerism
I'd pool you, skunk!

lol
But yeah to put it simply, closing tags are much easier to read than 30 closing braces in a row
Way easier to tell which elements are being closed

json is slightly smaller when minified. that's probably the only purely objective comparison that can be made.

usually it's no worry, and you can insert comments if you REALLY wanted to know if it was being closed. :)

I also find json easier to read, but that's not objective

but really what you want is a chomsky grammar 3 or some shit so you can parse it with regex.

8:08 PM
lol

(just throwing out random phrases i remember from the big parse html with regex thing)

My rules for choosing: If I have to read it, it's XML. If it's only read by the system (debugging is the one exception), it's JSON.
Assuming I have the power to choose of course

JSON has some flexibility issues for edge cases in certain types of APIs

Sounds more like a con than a pro to me

Yeah, that's a con :p

8:10 PM
Just checking :D
Sounds just like the whole semicolons optional debacle with JS

The pro would be, XML can potentially be more flexible for some edge cases with certain types of APIs.
It sounds better as a con :p
Though, you can work around those cases pretty easily.

By following standards?

@SpartanDonut if it's only read by the system, why not something binary? you can massively decrease both file size and processing time

Also, the slightly extra advantage that XML has in terms of flexibility (attributes, versus having to manage type changes) hasn't always worked out for the best for it.
@SpartanDonut By planning properly
So, it could be a pro / con either way - so nevermind.
:p

Hey guys

8:28 PM
@IcyDefiance debugging it is teh suck

pfft just get HxD and you're golden
I think VS has a built-in hex editor too

I need some more music.
I'm running low.

8:50 PM
hey @hasherr

oi

what the hell, a mcafee icon just lit up on my desktop
I didn't install mcafee

oshit.jpg
Intel is out for you bro

1 hour later…
10:11 PM
@IcyDefiance Did you update Flash recently and forget not to install McAfee?

mm, could be
I always watch for those check boxes, but I did update flash recently

Flash bundles it where you download
So it's a checkmark at the download, not the install.

I have some insider info that Microsoft may be adding additional UAC-like prompts for each application that is installing. So a Flash installer with McAfee will have 2 UAC-like warnings
That would be nice, eh?

10:47 PM
UAC?
when it dims and asks if you're sure at the OS level?

yes
prompts like that

no-google trivia question: What movie is this line from: "I want more life, fucker."

eg:
- Are you sure you want to install Flash?
- Are you sure you want to install McAfee?

ah right
I think that would only be fair
and I would applaud MS for doing such a thing.

Well, my brother is pushing for that

10:57 PM
i found some nasty stuff on the MIL's computer due to these evil things.

@JohnMcDonald your brother was working with macafee, right?

Symantec

why that doesn't sound familiar? :|

Norton
Symantec makes Norton antivirus

I mean this statement.
well I do know symantec, though I don't use any of their products

11:36 PM
I don't like the flack windows gets for asking you if you are sure you want to do things...
Makes me sad for the world

I never had a problem with that aspect of Windows
I did wonder if there was a way to spoof that behaviour.
like lie in wait for Win to open one, then open your own instead and get your malware in that way
but I've never heard of that being a problem

All this shit regarding the Last of Us movie is making me angry
Why do you want to cram an amazing movie story into a 2 hour window?

11:57 PM
Because movies are fun
