I've been wondering: how important are the altitude and distance stats in Skippy Fish?
You always hear: come up with an idea, then remove as many things from it as you can. Or something to that effect
Maybe a simple tweak to the UI could shift the focus, like:
distance SKIPS altitude

well, I only cared about distance
altitude and skips never seems that important

Hmm, there you go
crap
From a design perspective, I want a single stat that is easy to share with friends, and I feel that's # of skips because it's something the user is actively involved in, distance is secondary imo. But now... if I leave both, users are going to share what they think was important or best about their own run (not a single stat). But if I remove all but skips, users might feel like they either went really high or really far and there's no stat to represent that
Flappy Bird, Timber Man, and Super Hexagon all have this really simple stat I'm trying to culture
"Hahah, I made it to 10.6s in Super Hexagon!! How long did you last!?"
tough

3:04 AM
IMO distance is the combination of both number of skips and the jump height
that's why I like the most
most of the time if you go real high, you'll end up with a far distance too.
and the same can be said about skipping a lot
I also prefer leaving a single stat in the game, as you mentioned because can compare a single stat, but two parameters can't be really compared.
but only leaving the number number of skips, won't tell anything about how high you went.
I'm pretty sure no one argues about the high as the only stat.

3:22 AM
Yeah, "Height" is a meaningless stat
Even though distance is more telling how well you did, I don't think it's as communicable or interactive as the skip count

@JohnMcDonald 10.6 sec! no way!
:)
that game has the best difficulty ratings in history
hard, harder, hardest, hardester, harderest, hardestest.
when you first survive hard and it unlocks hardester, you just know something is up :)

well... when you die in 2 seconds and are happy to make it to 3, you should know something's up
:p
hmm, sounds like I should really decide if distance or skips are more fun
Probably distance
I'm flipping around here
D: I want both

3:59 AM
different people will have different preferences on that one
playing SSX, I couldn't get my wife to do anything but go for tricks
so i always won the race
hence SSX Tricky, which I thought was pretty boring.
heh

yeah, but can you imagine if Super Hexagon had 2 stats? Time Elapsed and Gates Passed?
That would be horrible
So... I think I have to say goodbye to skips

MLM
4:27 AM
Someone just showed me this "flap" like game. Simple and no special permissions to install: play.google.com/store/apps/…

@JohnMcDonald there's no technique to passing more or less gates in that game though
there seems to be some way to change the height on skippy fish
you might want a single stat: skip/distance ratio
or something

nah, it's gatta be a simple stat, and I think distance is it. If there comes a time when people demand more, I can add the height and skips back in

If you're going to pick one, I agree distance is the one

I'll still record everything else in the bg, but decide to only show the distance
So if/when I flick the switch, all of your best stats are still there

smart

4:37 AM
well, gtg. gn

bye

I finally got back on my hobby coding
So nice taking a long break, come back having forgot everything about the code
Solved all the outstanding bugs that were hidden in plain sight

4:11 PM
just got mockups for the menus the programmer I "hired" is going to do for my game
they look good :)
I think I'll actually finally get this shit done and out the door
i put "hired" in quotes because he's in it for a percent of the take, which might be near zero

ic. What are you releasing?

iOS puzzle game
looking like it will be done within a few months now
sound guy is at least half done

Cool.

yup
damned prototype has been sitting around for maybe 2 years

4:15 PM
with all the job changes and UI programming at work, I never felt like finishing it
gameplay's done, and addictive as hell

Awesome
How are you planning to monetize it?

iOS will be $2.
if there is ever an android or web version, those will be ad-supported.
I plan to run ads to drive some traffic to it
here's a business tip for you. our golf game at work is HUGE. too big for the 100 MB apple limit on over the air downloads.
so we're making it 100 mB download that downloads content as you need it
this means as soon as you get it, you can't play and have to download stuff just to start it.
they know this sucks
BUT

We are going to run ads for it.
we pay by the click
if someone clicks the ad while over the air and they hit that 100 MB limit and don't download it, then we're paying for clicks and not getting anything.
that aspect has been judged more important than the potential frustration of "You have the game! Now download the tutorial."
And I think they might be right about it.

yeah
guess so

4:20 PM
the designer in me says "AAARRRGGGHHH".
but it's hard to dispute the click-ad argument.

It would be best if you could detect over the air at download time, but that's not going to happen

user92578
Look at how happy he is: shooting, and animating and stuffz:

user92578

:) Nice

user92578
The animation is derpy as hell and I still need to make him animate to the other direction as well but this is a step to the right direction

4:50 PM
@JohnMcDonald yeah

Phew, it's quite a bit of work getting something released on a phone
Just tying up loose ends, making everything look nice, adding a mute button, scaling some things but not others, remastering the audio to remove static, etc.

It's quite a bit of work entertaining a stray kitten xD
Also it's very cute and distracting

5:19 PM
:p

@JohnMcDonald yeah. will have to do something about iPhone 4/iPhone 5 sizes.
engine takes care of the pixel density issue for non-retina devices.

yeah... which reminds me that I want to figure out how to use SVG sprite sheets in Crafty
And will all of my target devices support SVG?
I don't really want to deal with mipmaps

heheh
:(
new phpbb version
gotta update the eve corp and alliance forums

ehh, I always dreaded updating forums. Especially if you've made any custom changes
Lesson learned: never make custom changes

some people asked for a light theme for my website (sgscript.org) ... so I made this:

5:27 PM
heheh
I have a custom mod for the alliance forum
checks EVE APIs only to let in actual alliance members.
but it's supported through the phpbb mod system

the result (coming soon): i.imgur.com/5XvbdDZ.png

so it's not hard to deal with

that works
So yeah, I was thinking about the "Distance" stat in Skippy Fish some more last night, and I don't think it's very relatable. If I say I went "24.6m", what does that mean? So, I think I'm going to make a whole new stat: Time
"I lasted 14.6 seconds" is relatable, and everyone knows what that means

5:42 PM
Obligatory that's what she said

hah, that works a little too well

@JohnMcDonald add a gradient
An easy technique is to generate the gradient over a 1D array, then apply it vertically across a rendertarget
or stretch the render target vertically on the viewport for a faster render

yeah, and probably move stuff around to bring the "Air Time" and "Max Air Time" together in the middle of the screen

Jon
6:19 PM
yeah
then if you get to like 2000 ft, have rambo come in on a helicopter and shoot at you

hey guys
cracking crazy hot day huh

^ @JohnMcDonald

anyone here ok on the dx api?
i got some odd behaviour i cant figure out
completely "basic" example of using a shader to render a tri
var vertexShaderByteCode = ShaderBytecode.CompileFromFile("MiniTri.fx", "VS", "vs_4_0", ShaderFlags.None, EffectFlags.None);
var vertexShader = new VertexShader(device, vertexShaderByteCode);
var pixelShaderByteCode = ShaderBytecode.CompileFromFile("MiniTri.fx", "PS", "ps_4_0", ShaderFlags.None, EffectFlags.None);
var pixelShader = new PixelShader(device, pixelShaderByteCode);

var layout = new InputLayout(
    device,
    ShaderSignature.GetInputSignature(vertexShaderByteCode),
    new[]
        {
so here it is
as with all demo code its usually wordy and badly "designed"
I wanted to improve the code a bit so i tried this ...
var vertexShader = new VertexShader(device, ShaderBytecode.CompileFromFile("Shaders/Coloured.fx", "VS", "vs_4_0", ShaderFlags.None, EffectFlags.None));
var pixelShader = new PixelShader(device, ShaderBytecode.CompileFromFile("Shaders/Coloured.fx", "PS", "ps_4_0", ShaderFlags.None, EffectFlags.None));
VertexPositionColour[] data = new VertexPositionColour[]
{
    new VertexPositionColour { Position = new Vector4(0.0f, 0.5f, 0.5f, 1.0f), Colour = new Vector4(1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f) },
    new VertexPositionColour { Position = new Vector4(0.5f, -0.5f, 0.5f, 1.0f), Colour = new Vector4(0.0f, 1.
But it now doesn't render
why?
i'll put this in a question properly
someone should get some points for this
0
Q: Why does this no longer render the "test tri"?

WardySo I got this code about rendering a shaded tri using sharpDX ... var vertexShaderByteCode = ShaderBytecode.CompileFromFile("MiniTri.fx", "VS", "vs_4_0", ShaderFlags.None, EffectFlags.None); var vertexShader = new VertexShader(device, vertexShaderByteCode); var pixelShaderByteCode = ShaderByteco...

any ideas guys?

Jon
6:45 PM
no

awww :(

2 hours later…
8:33 PM
:) Yeahhh. This is more like it:

8:48 PM
Lol skippy fish again

Yup, still perfecting it for phones, :)
I've had really positive feedback from friends and family, so I need to release this for Android at a minimum
Almost ready for the first release

Nice, send me the link when it's done. Free I assume?

9:11 PM
@JohnMcDonald have you made the clouds move yet?
BTW, why are the clouds so blue?

the skip splashes move horizontally, but nothing else atm, but that's top of the list for post-release changes

@JohnMcDonald Do you have plans to make the shark change positions randomly?
It kind of looks weird for it to just sit there and not do anything.

That could be easy. But not today
I'll make a note

Oh! Perhaps make the water a bit more dynamic too.
That's a pretty still ocean :P

Yeah, my only concern was that people would think you could skip on the waves, and more importantly, that you needed to skip on the waves
And the game is already hard enough as it is

9:18 PM
Perhaps just some random water particles then.

Like in the water? yeah. It's on the todo list, :)

@JohnMcDonald Don't forget to add more unicorns to your game.

The things that can't wait are: an icon, recording the # of games, making sure it displays alright on various screen sizes, learning how to sign an APK, adding advertisements, adding analytics, and maybe also adding a way to easily share scores
heh, maybe if you last 100 seconds, I can add a Unicorn in the sky

But, the unicorns :(
Yeah.
Or if you get like a bunch of perfect skips in a row or something.

Good bloody luck. Also, I would have no idea how to test that

9:35 PM
:) Eastereggs would be fun though

@JohnMcDonald You know what else is fun that nobody else does anymore (it seems)?
Hidden cheats.
Those are fun.
I don't know why.

heh, no idea how you'd do that on a phone

Shake it while holding down your finger.
Then do three taps.

also, the konami code is still everywhere

Or close the app at 12:00 and then open the app at 13:00.
Just random stuff.
@JohnMcDonald Your game also needs more golmers :P

9:47 PM
@JohnMcDonald for example you can just make some random pattern do something special
for example, report twice as skips as one did (without saving it among records of course)

D: It's $99/year for an apple license!
I thought it was $99 period

Yep.
And you better have a mac too.
But I don't want to start this debate again.

Yeah... I don't own an apple product

Same here.
Well, technically I have an iPhone, but you can't really develop on it. Plus it's a 3Gs.
Really old.

10:00 PM
If you have an iPhone, or any other iDevice, you could consider the Cydia market.

What I do have is friends that do iPhone game development, because there is no way I am investing thousands of dollars in Skippy Fish as of today
sigh, let's not get ahead of myself
Android is $25/lifetime, and Windows is $20/lifetime.

Versus $100 per year, clearly apple is on top here :P

$100/year + cost of apple hardware
A bit of a brick wall for a hobby dev without pre-existing hardware

I understand with the mac store, but why would apple want to put off devs like that?

shrug

10:11 PM
If you have an iPhone?

Why can't you use windows.
Just doesn't make sense.

Because you can't run any of the development tools on Windows

I mean, you technically don't even have to have an android to make an android app AFAIK.

> Apple® tools required to build iOS applications run only on the OS X operating system on Intel-based Macs. Xcode® 4.5 (the minimum required version) runs only on OS X version 10.7 (Lion) or greater, and includes the iOS 6 SDK (Software Development Kit). To submit apps to the Apple App Storeâ„  requires the latest versions of the Apple tools.

10:12 PM
Yeah, but why wouldn't they make them work on windows.
They also collect 30% of revenue.

yeah, I don't think you need an android to release to the google play store, and the SDK works everywhere

So I think that it could really make up.

Different business models

Oh well, sucks for them :)

Just like taxes in my home province. We have decided to reduce business taxes, and abolish provincial sales taxes in Alberta. You'd kinda think that it would result in less money for the province, but it actually encourages businesses and people to move here, and therefore more money.
Hmm, I bet I can use PhoneGap Build to build for iPhones. BUT the version of "PhoneGap" that "PhoneGap Build" is using is old, so the sounds won't work
That could be pretty good

10:52 PM
@JohnMcDonald AFAIK, phonegap will have you end up paying a lot too.
I think you need a mac too.

"PhoneGap Build" is the cloud build service, and it seems to be able to build a file as long as you have a key
Looks like a device is still required, simply because Apple checks for one: docs.build.phonegap.com/en_US/… (under "Register devices")
That's still a whole lot easier than finding/borrowing/buying an actual Mac

11:13 PM
Bah, why is my Google-fu failing me? I'm trying to figure out if all countries use ss.mm for seconds and milliseconds

hey @John

Hey, :)

do you use or have used Linux?

I have it installed on the laptop downstairs
Why?

I'm trying to resize my mint partition, but it seems I need to boot some kind of program to do it
the one I actually have installed on the system won't let me do it, the option is grayed out

11:16 PM
Ah. I have no idea, I literally installed Ubuntu a month ago

bollocks
thanks anyway

11:32 PM
wtf Wikipedia. Canadians don't write numbers as "123 456.78" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_mark
hunh, looks like I've been doing it wrong: psc-cfp.gc.ca/abt-aps/stgd-gdst/index-eng.htm#toc2.17
lol

>Use a space in numbers of four figures or more, except in the case of monetary units.

yeah... apparently that's what we do, but nobody I know does that

lol

It's always commas for thousands, and period for decimal places
But... how do you correct a wiki article when they are backed up with official documents from the government. :p
This one is always my favourite: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country (Canada uses all three major date formats: YMD, DMY, and MDY) ;(
05/12/10 Have fun!

11:48 PM
hahaha
this is when you start talking, get supporters, make some noise
write signs, letters
"fix our english please"

@JohnMcDonald yeah fuck that whole date format shit
no way to tell what the expiration date on food is when they use xx/xx/xx format

that's why when I write dates on the Internet, I spell out the month instead of using a number

they were going to try to ship our golf game using "100 000" to mean "100,000"
I had to bitch to get them to change it

lol
and I avoid using "spring/summer/fall/winter" cuz that means the opposite to half the world
Q1, Q2 etc is better

11:54 PM
@Chris I either do that, or I do 2014-07-12

hahaha
good point!

Yeah, very good point

@JohnMcDonald that could be july 12 or december 7th

@JohnMcDonald yeah you'd be pretty damn sure that the middle number is the month

"Q3 GDSE Game Jam"

11:54 PM
lol
I like the steam summer sales, cuz sometimes they have snow at the bottom of the page hahaha

hah, yeah

:(
they ran outta cabbage
gotta go to the store

@Almo Could, but not even the Americans screw up dates that bad

argh, I'm very tempted to ditch my in-game "edit controls" system, and just have the player(s) set up their controls before the game launches. Absolutely sick of doing my head in dealing with like 2 abstraction layers to figure out which button is what, plus requiring the player to map gamepad buttons in-game as well

Oh fun
I bet the UI for that is just peachy too
