6:00 PM
Ugh, people are frustrating
Alright I'll post them both, so my question is widely accepted by all. PS, I know, i was just messing with you =) — IrishWhiskey 35 secs ago

That one's going to get me in trouble.

Is it just me or is Brent using the same argument for the relational database as dumb storage that ORMs and NoSQL adherents use?: brentozar.com/archive/2013/02/…

Anyone have a handy bookmark on optimiser estimations for range queries? My google-fu is failing me although I'd swear @PaulWhite has covered it before.
And as if by magic I find an answer of Paul's on dba.se!

@MarkStorey-Smith the magic of FTS

6:18 PM
I'm glad I edited out me calling him a turd now that I find out he's kidding.

@CadeRoux fascinating

@CadeRoux it comes off that way. However from what I have gathered over my time. Brent seems to be of the opinion that scaling out SQL server can be expensive so give as much releif to your SQL box as possible.

Q: Badge for elected Moderators

JusticatorI think an elected Moderator should have a badge for getting elected. That way past moderators will be esteemed for their contribution. Come to think of it - if there are badges for voting(Constituent) and even for visiting(Caucus), There really should be a Badge for Nomination as well.

JNK
@Zane pretty much. They seem to be pushing scaling up your storage and limiting CPU as much as possible now
I think since the licensing model for SS changed to by the core

6:34 PM
Except that the cool wizbang new features are, ... wait for it... CPU intensive.

@billinkc which is why you'd want to offload CPU stuff to the app (in this line of thought)

Except an app won't be able to create things like columnstore index

@billinkc right. so you let the rdbms do the columnstore thingy and you offload calcs to the app. am i doing this right?

But when you want to create the columnstore index, it's a CPU and memory intensive operation. Haven't read the fine article, just in a conspiracy minded mood

@billinkc i think the point is that you reserve the CPU for things that absolutely must be done by the engine and all of things that could be handled by the app, you make the app handle it. i'm not saying that i completely agree with it all, i'm just trying to see if i get the gist of the perspective.

6:40 PM
I understand about scaling to Google-scale. But so few projects need that. It seems like it just becomes a strong argument to go distributed NoSQL too early - since you are stressing code over declaration, which I think is a shame, because why use a relational database at all you aren't going to use any of its features? But the idea of shipping a ton of extra data to the application tier for filtering and sorting doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

@Zane don't ever let people on meta seeing you calling SE as a forum ;-)
@IrishWhiskey That's fine it's not very easy to detect sarcasm over this sort of forum. — Zane 23 mins ago
@CadeRoux He really doesn't like to sort on the database layer

is this a good fit for our community?
How gross are muscular legs on a chick? Should she wear pants instead of a skirt? Asking for a friend...

@CadeRoux Nod nod to all of that.

@swasheck that reminds me of the lady that I saw last week. She was wearing a little dress and she was a former american gladitator
it was gross

There is a girl in my neighborhood like that. She must be a swimmer because she is Jacked.

6:51 PM
@bluefeet but you never want to look at them funny because they will kill you with their pinky

@Zane you have no idea. I would give you guys her name to google but lets just say she has some very NSFW stuff out there

@Zane as a former swimmer ... i find swimmergirls ... fascinating
@bluefeet that's why there's "SafeSearch" and as far as i can tell, @Zane and I are safe because of the restrictive web policies at our respective places of employment

@swasheck she has done some videos though. I was shocked at what I saw

@bluefeet so did you see the vids before or after you saw her?

@swasheck I only saw screenshots from them after I saw her in person. I didn't go to her website it has a big warning label on it

6:54 PM
@swasheck I'm pretty sure she saw them after.

fair enough.

@Zane I did not do such thing, I saw enough on google images

@bluefeet I think that he meant that you saw the images after seeing her in person
not that you saw the videos

I don't think @bluefeet was trolling images of beefy women and then bumped into one of them lol.
@Lamak exactly.

moving on ... ... i finally beat level 29 of candy crush. i'm really just waiting for my last day to get here

6:56 PM
@swasheck the day is close

oh yeah, sorry...long day after dentist

indeed

So how does it work out that we elect Aaron and then he disappears for like a week

@bluefeet sorry for what?
@jcolebrand technically he disappeared WHILE he was being elected

oh right, a cruise wasn't it?

6:57 PM
sqlcruise

@swasheck for misinterpreting the comment about searching before I saw her in person

@swasheck to @Zane because she thought that he meant that she saw the videos after she found them

@jcolebrand RECALL ELECTION!

@bluefeet I blame Phil

@bluefeet @Lamak ok. thanks. in stereo
@jcolebrand i only blame @Phil when my beer is missing

6:59 PM
@swasheck yeah, and I said it in a very convoluted way

@Lamak but i understood it

@swasheck we should blame him more

@Lamak you don't drink, though

@swasheck right, but I can blame him when my soda is missing. And blame him for everything in general

Geez Gordon's on a roll this week, top user -- stackoverflow.com/users

7:02 PM
@swasheck That one was a booger

@bluefeet that's because @AaronBertrand isn't here to point out all of his syntax errors.

@bluefeet wow. And I'm still lazily approaching to 20k. sigh

JNK
If you post enough answers regardless of quality, you will get a lot of rep

@billinkc speaking of booger ... i loved that character

@Lamak Yeah my answering has dropped off, I am doing more cleanup and editing of crap, crap and more crap

7:04 PM
@JNK that's my secret

@swasheck what show was that?

Revenge of the Nerds, 1-3

JNK
He's posted about 200 answers in the past week

@bluefeet mine too. I've answered very little lately

@billinkc that's right
@JNK it is getting a little ridiculous, IMO

JNK
7:05 PM
so he's averaging 7 rep per answer

It's like he is vomiting answers

JNK
if he can do that more power to him
but don't get pissy if they get downvoted/commented on

I am curious if he has a life outside of SO
He posts at 1am, 3am, 9pm all over the place
He was even posting all day on memorial day. Holiday, take a break

@billinkc yep. i knew i could count on you

JNK
@bluefeet maybe he hates freedom

7:07 PM
I started to quote the same actor's lines from Better Off Dead but then realized I was mixing my lines

@JNK the pinko

JNK
anybody here use SQLPrompt?

@JNK That the redgate addin? If so, love it would sell first and secondborn to have it were I to lose it

JNK
lol

<--- This guy does. @JNK

7:11 PM
I am so amazingly lazy now when I'm at home and don't open the work laptop. I'm constantly hitting ctrl-k y to format my code and I keep expecting tab completion to expand my asterisks

@billinkc you'd sell your kids for a bottle of scotch though, right?

JNK
@billinkc lol
nice

Nope, me and scotch had a parting of ways after my college roommates wedding

@billinkc how sad

Nah, it was worth it. His wedding gift request from me was to have my blitzed out of my mind as he always found drunk me amusing. And by drunk me, he meant the weak little sissy who can't hold his liquor and blows chow

7:13 PM
@billinkc good to know.

Oh to be young and stupid. Now I'm just old and dum

JNK
im installing the trial now

@billinkc how sad

@Lamak is stuck on autorepeat

I'm still fairly young and stupid

7:17 PM
@swasheck That is actually quite sad

@Lamak Don't worry, I'll be happy to drink some of the finest Chilean hooch whenever I don't come down

@billinkc they say that chilean wine is quite good
and we have "pisco"

grape brandy?? que bueno!!!!
(correct me since i'm wrong)

Wife is a fan of Malbec so being a dumb 'merican I'm going to call Chile argentina

@swasheck yup
@billinkc you wouldn't dare

JNK
7:20 PM
@Lamak Chillin wine is only good for whites and very few reds or roses

the worst local liquor i've had was turkish rakı ...

JNK
rimshot

You should be happy that I even know it's not part of Mexico

@JNK I laughed

7:20 PM
@billinkc if it's south of texas it's mexico, right?

@billinkc .....I think you are right

@swasheck I thought Mexico was in the north

@billinkc no. that's newfoundland
actually ... ouzo was a close second to rakı

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells i bow to your superior skills

7:24 PM
My coworker has called BS on chilean wine not being good. She loves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carménère

@billinkc but chilean wine is good

@Lamak so you've heard

25 columns is too many to alias....<sigh>
Just one follow-up question...is there a way to alias all columns from a particular table when using a SELECT *? I guess I'm in for a quite a bit of manual aliasing since each table really has over 25+ columns — ThoughtExperiment 2 mins ago

I'm a savage and drink antifreeze cocktails

7:25 PM
@swasheck exactly :-)

@billinkc goes down sweet
@billinkc apparently they now have an unsweetened antifreeze. fewer calories (and canine fatalities)

I so want to star that

what is this?

@Lamak Most new world wine is good because the wineries use modern tech that's easy to keep sterile and maintain consistent fermentation temperatures.

This Websense category is filtered: Tasteless. URL:

@billinkc it's a free country

7:27 PM
hahahha

@swasheck thanks for the heads up.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells come on, let me be proud of our wine (even if I don't drink it)

@Zane i'm here to help

@Lamak maybe you should start drinking it :D

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells After today, I think I might start day-drinking

7:30 PM
@bluefeet where did you find that?

@Zane what? day drinking?

@bluefeet i'm already daydrinking
last code review here

The breadfish.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells so I've been told.....countless times :-)

@Zane I was streaming something online and it was in a google chrome commercial

7:31 PM
"this stored procedure sucks. don't take it personally. wait, i dont care if you do. that's fine."

Probably going to go watch the hockey game and have some drinks later.

@bluefeet what is it?

@Lamak Don't let me stop you - I like Chilean wine as well ;-}

@Zane so hockey ... that's still a thing in the US?

@swasheck some song about breadfish, use your smart phone

7:33 PM
@bluefeet too much effort

JNK
oh speaking of drinking
my 1 yr old and a coors

@swasheck geez you and @FreshPrinceOfSO are lazy!!!

@JNK light. were the mountains blue?

JNK
@swasheck No, it was no longer as cold as the rockies

@JNK I'm sure there's a meme in that somewhere.

7:34 PM
@JNK hah. did he sample any of it?

JNK
no he just grabbed it
my older son does think that all beer is for me though

@bluefeet guilty as charged

@JNK starting him young I see

@JNK so you've trained him well

@swasheck smdh

JNK
7:35 PM
He was with his mom and they saw a beer truck and he said "Is it for daddy?"

@JNK happy father's day

JNK
@swasheck it would be

@JNK what an adorable picture of "image not found"

my 4-year-old nephew drinks the leftover beer at the bottom of his dad's cans
and my 5-year-old daughter also loves beer. i gave her a taste (thinking she'd say "yuck" and drop it) ... shesmiled wide and and said, "YUM!" then she asked for some wine. i didnt give her a sample of that

@ypercube Yes, it appears so

7:38 PM
my wife was ... nonplussed

JNK
@swasheck a sip won't hurt them
we are planning on exposing our kids to alcohol in their teens, like a little wine at dinner or whatever
so they won't go bananas when they get to college

@swasheck maybe some chilean wine...

@JNK or you can do what my folks did for me, they bribed me

@JNK this is so very European. Let them drink it when they're younger, in moderation, and they adapt to enjoying it more when they get older. Nothing wrong with that.

@JNK yes. that was our thought too. we just never thought that a 5-year-old would like the taste of beer. it's normally an acquired taste. next thing you know she'll be stealing my dad's SKOL when we visit grandma and papa

7:40 PM
It's not drinking. And that swill isn't much stronger than the shandy kids can buy in England at any age.

@bluefeet with what?

And most of the "go to college, get drunk" is about no inhibitions or over-arching protective spirits (aka: mom, dad) to prevent the kids from doing stupid shit.

JNK
@swasheck yeah I hated beer until I was in my late 20s

@JNK @swasheck I had an agreement with them starting when I was 13, that if I didn't drink, smoke ot do any drugs by the time I was 21 they gave me $1k on my birthday

@bluefeet did they do tests?

JNK
7:41 PM
@bluefeet did it work?

On-campus housing should be reserved for those in their Junior and Senior or above years, and Freshmen/Sophomores should commute from home (or do community college, which is, once again, a commute)

@swasheck No they didn't @JNK Yes it worked

Of course I drank AT high school.

@bluefeet so you're just that honorable?

@swasheck yes I am

7:42 PM
@bluefeet lazy or efficient?

@bluefeet that's a noble characteristic. i would have been back then, too but that was before i realized how much i like bourbon and tequila

@FreshPrinceOfSO lazy

@FreshPrinceOfSO ah. i prefer efficient. or economical

I was just too well behaved....have never been drunk

@swasheck everyone asks me if I lied to my parents and did it anyway, but I didn't. I couldn't see taking their money if I broke the agreement

7:44 PM
@bluefeet i'm not being facetious when i tell you that's a good thing. it's good to be honest :)

@bluefeet I wouldn't be able to take that deal if I only had to resist for a month lol

@bluefeet We all know JW doesn't

Well my brother had the same deal and he broke it about 2 weeks after he made it, he was 14 when he broke that deal

@Zane in high school it would have been dead simple for me. extending it out to 21 would have been the tough part
@bluefeet did you rat him out?

Isn't 21 a little excessive. Many countries the drinking age is 18.

7:46 PM
@CadeRoux bingo

@swasheck no need he came home smelling like cigarettes, which was exactly the behavior that triggered the deal in the first place
he was a rambunctious child/teenager

@bluefeet hah. nice. so he told on himself

@bluefeet I don't smoke either. But all of my friends do. I usually stink of cigarettes all the time

yup, I learned very quickly what NOT to do with him as a sibling

@CadeRoux a fair point. but you can really only follow the rules of the land regardless of how you feel about them. i'd consider civil disobedience more along the lines parents doing the thing that @JNK and i talked about

7:48 PM
I went on a school band trip to Germany and I don't remember there being issues us teenagers being served beer AT a German school for a social event. And an area band trip to Austria, same deal.

@Lamak I am lucky, none of my friends smoke
at least not anymore

@CadeRoux what instrument did you play?
@bluefeet i'd assume that would interfere with your running

@swasheck But it's not illegal to drink at home with your parents at any age.

@swasheck a little bit

@CadeRoux really?

7:50 PM
I smoke.
As much as I enjoy smoking. I still really hate that I started.

@Zane seriously?

@CadeRoux @Lamak yeah ... i didnt know that either

@Lamak If the kids got drunk or alcohol poisoning or something, there would be issues, but I don't think we have any laws here for that. Maybe it's just Louisiana.

@bluefeet seriously what?

JNK
I think 21 is silly

7:52 PM
It's illegal here for kids to buy alcohol and for stores to sell it to them.
The law states that "public possession" of alcohol includes at a club, which is "de facto open to the public." Underage public possession and consumption of alcohol is not prohibited if the underage person is accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 21 years old.

@Zane you smoke? It's a rare thing nowadays. I don't know many people who do

Oh yeah. Like a chimney.

JNK
average age for a soldier killed in iraq/afghanistan is 20
let em drink

Okay probably not that bad. Like half a pack a day.

JNK
7:53 PM
I smoked for 12 years
pack a day or more

What really surprised me was how much Amsterdam had gone non-smoking. Last time I was there two years ago bars were still really smoky. I think it's been banned or something. England has been that way for a couple years, so I didn't notice the change.

@CadeRoux That is probably why I don't see much of it. No smoking in bars/restaurants in Phoenix. Also you have to be a certain distance away from building doors if you are smoking outside

I can't beleive High School smoking is on the rise again. It's like 6 bucks a pack. Soon to be 8 in my state.

@CadeRoux I wonder what the law says about that here
@Zane my dad smoked 3 packs a day for the last 40 years. He stopped 3 months ago

JNK
its cheaper in the south
I bought a pack when I was in atlanta (I do when I travel sometimes)
it was like $4 there
when I started in 1998 in North Carolina it was like $1.25

7:56 PM
It's still 4 in Kentucky. The product is like 98%Tax.

@JNK that's because you're supporting the local economy. it's like going to the local farmer's market in NC

JNK
@swasheck its because the taxes are so low

@swasheck Fresh local organic carcinogens

@CadeRoux lol

JNK
I quit over 3 yrs ago and I still miss it

7:58 PM
@JNK you ruined perfectly good snark with your sensibility. and why do you suppose the taxes are so low? hmmmm?

Alright Guys I'm out going to try and run with my dog before it rains.
@JNK Longest I've been is a year.

JNK
later zane
I had kids which is a good motivator
(not poisoning them that is)

@Zane run with your dog?

@JNK ah. because having young children caused to me start drinking more heavily
@FreshPrinceOfSO @Zane gets the runs from his dog?

It sucks because from what I've noticed is it never stops sucking. My dad hasn't had one since my mom got pregnant and he still gets cravings.

7:59 PM
@swasheck ha

Entergy texted me to let me know power was out at my house. It has now been restored. "Cause: Animal"

Take my dog for a run. does that work.

@Zane what's wrong with taking your dog for a walk

@CadeRoux fried squirrel for dinner?

@swasheck That's what it sounds like. Or maybe a raccoon or possum.

8:00 PM
@CadeRoux stories like that make me miss the south

@swasheck is it just me, or is this comment dirty
@FreshPriceOfSO I edited my answer. as the question is just for printing the print output the colour. I just copied some of my come and posted! — TomPHP 2 mins ago
> I just copied some of my come

HR: inappropriate use of office technology

I'll just flag his come

@FreshPrinceOfSO sounds personal

@swasheck Whoops.. I meant code

8:11 PM
remember when you were young?

8:23 PM
@bluefeet this guy got the wrong answer even though he saw my comment:

A: How to get the sum of a result from a query in SQL

Phil CrossYou just need to add a GROUP BY clause: Select SOL.STOCKCODE as SC,SUM([tableReference].ORD_QUANT) as OQ from SALESORD_LINES SOL INNER JOIN SALESORD_HDR SOH ON SOL.HDR_SEQNO = SOH.SEQNO WHERE SOL.HDR_STATUS = '6' AND SOH.ORDERDATE > DATEDIFF(D,120,getdate()) GROUP BY [tableReference].ORD_QUA...

@Lamak too nice
@bluefeet I rather vote to close as too localized :-) — Lamak 2 mins ago
It would have been free rep to get you too 20k

@Lamak i VtC ... but you should still answer and i'll upvote you

@bluefeet I know....it's just that I rather see SO free of all this so localized questions and answers

@Lamak you can still answer and VtC

@bluefeet that's true.....I'll keep that in mind for the next one :-), thanks guys

8:25 PM
@Lamak ANSWER NOW!!!!

@swasheck you made me laugh....I hope that next monday you still got to hang out here for a while

it'd be in the evening

@swasheck well, that's good enough

geez we like to make things so complicated here sometimes. It feels like I am not even a DBA. The devs tell us what they want in procs, etc. The Data Modelers model the DB, I get to write scripts

#sqlhelp SOS_WORKER+LCK_M_S in system_health but no deadlocked scheduler dump in ERLOG. Engine was down for 3 mins. Any ideas? 2008R2x64STD
SOS_WORKER = waiting for a thread
LCK_M_S = shared lock
wouldn't expect a deadlock, right?
unless it was the victim
and a misread

8:59 PM
@jcolebrand can it be: I love&hate TFS? :)

Apparently, I'm not really nice. I'm a mean guy that wants to close questions ;-)
Thanks Phil. I added the references, but now it fails again saying the same error. I added SOL.ORD_QUANT in each place. Also, I don't know why @lamak wants to close my question? What is wrong with it? What does 'its too localised' mean when I have asked for help and given all the details I can? — Bevan 29 mins ago

@Lamak i've always known that deep down inside you're a jerk

@jcolebrand shouldn't happen. Really. I work with it for 5-6 years now and I never lost a change set. It has SQL Server in behind, dang it! How can you hate your life? :)

@swasheck I can assure you that I am

@Lamak good material for a proper DBA! ;)

9:05 PM
@Lamak pretty sure that's categorically false

@swasheck you're pretty, he can assure you.
kind of a difference in language :)

@Marian oh, I can't assure that

not pretty at all. i'm luck i got the wife that i did

@Lamak me neither, but the words association sounds funny :)

@Marian well ... when it LOSES MY CHANGESETS I have an issue. And not just mine, but other people's as well.
I watch a guy do the checkin
I pull latest
I don't get his changeset

9:09 PM
why does MySQL have to allow aggregates without group bys????

Q: MYSQL Left Join Not Showing All Rows

user2415405EDIT: I cleaned up the code to the following, still not working it's still only showing rows where caregiver_review contains a match (c.id = cr.practice_id) even though Im using LEFT JOIN EDIT 2: I discovered that the problem is being caused by using aggregates in the SELECT clause such as ROUND &...

@jcolebrand That's because TFS knows you have done something to your local copy and it's not going to let you do something bad to it

@jcolebrand see? there's always an explanation. Not the one you expect, though :).

@bluefeet because MySQL is for the lazy

@jcolebrand really, it is a royal pain to work with, but never heard of losing a CS. Have you opened a ticket or something?

Oracle Pivot: I have a column of semicolon separated values coming from Oracle financials and I want to pivot it from:

a;b;c | some data | some other data

to

a | some data | some other data
b | some data | some other data
c | some data | some other data

Pointers?
Not same number of values, obviously.
In SQL Server, I'd probably use CROSS APPLY or a table-valued function.

Q: Oracle 10g Splitting string into multiple rows

marshalllawI know this has been answered to some degree with PHP and MYSQL, but I was wondering if someone could teach me the simplest approach to splitting a string (comma delimited) into multiple rows in Oracle 10g (preferably) and 11g. The table is as follows: Name | Project | Error 108 test ...

seems close enough

@CadeRoux what version of oracle?

@bluefeet 10g

@CadeRoux does the SO question help?

@Lamak Trynig to understand what they are doing, but I guess so.

@CadeRoux I would try to explain but I'm an Oracle ignorant

@bluefeet sqlfiddle.com/#!4/6ad64/1 seems to have funny behavior - I guess this is why they use the DISTINCT... Will have to look into it some more.

@CadeRoux ah, probably. I just stole the code, I don't know what it does
Do I sound like a SO user?

@bluefeet I know. Seeing the DISTINCT in the original was a code smell for me. I'll have to play with it using some kind of row identifier (there should be one in the real data) in the same CONNECT which would stop things connecting wrong.

9:50 PM
holy crap!!!! an @AaronBertrand answer without a single vote!!!

A: SQL trigger on Truncate

Aaron BertrandAre you letting users run TRUNCATE TABLE ad hoc / willy nilly? (But you'd have to do it in the opposi...

@jcolebrand Agree with @Marian, not a problem I've ever seen. Had dozens of cases of people checking in to a workspace or branch other than the one they thought they were checking in to however. Gated builds rejecting a check-in also pops up every other day.

10:08 PM
Now here is where my Oracle is really weak. Trying to do the CONNECT BY linking on the key column to try to do the recursion: sqlfiddle.com/#!4/69697/2

10:30 PM
@swasheck and it's blocked for some reason.

@Zane whaaaaaa?

It seems like one out of ten SO questions are blocked. Not sure how that is.

@Marian with Connect? Nope. Just had it happen often enough that I'm just as weary of it as I am with VSS.
So, here's a question:
If I were going to interview someone as an entry-level junior-grade DBA, just someone to start the concept of us having a DBA full time, to show management that it's a good thing, and this person is already interviewing for another position but we can scoop them for part-time DBA work, what would be good things to ask?
Or would it be better to ask if they're familiar with sp_Blitz and then ask them how scared they are of the results, and if they can do something about them? ;-)

Ask them if they can make your database web-scale.

@TimStone trolololol
Then they'll wanna use something like Couchbase ... oh wait, right
we already use couchbase in parts for our caching layer >.<
