@CadeRoux it comes off that way. However from what I have gathered over my time. Brent seems to be of the opinion that scaling out SQL server can be expensive so give as much releif to your SQL box as possible.

@billinkc i think the point is that you reserve the CPU for things that absolutely must be done by the engine and all of things that could be handled by the app, you make the app handle it. i'm not saying that i completely agree with it all, i'm just trying to see if i get the gist of the perspective.
I understand about scaling to Google-scale. But so few projects need that. It seems like it just becomes a strong argument to go distributed NoSQL too early - since you are stressing code over declaration, which I think is a shame, because why use a relational database at all you aren't going to use any of its features? But the idea of shipping a ton of extra data to the application tier for filtering and sorting doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

@JNK this is so very European. Let them drink it when they're younger, in moderation, and they adapt to enjoying it more when they get older. Nothing wrong with that.
@JNK yes. that was our thought too. we just never thought that a 5-year-old would like the taste of beer. it's normally an acquired taste. next thing you know she'll be stealing my dad's SKOL when we visit grandma and papa
And most of the "go to college, get drunk" is about no inhibitions or over-arching protective spirits (aka: mom, dad) to prevent the kids from doing stupid shit.

On-campus housing should be reserved for those in their Junior and Senior or above years, and Freshmen/Sophomores should commute from home (or do community college, which is, once again, a commute)
@CadeRoux a fair point. but you can really only follow the rules of the land regardless of how you feel about them. i'd consider civil disobedience more along the lines parents doing the thing that @JNK and i talked about
I went on a school band trip to Germany and I don't remember there being issues us teenagers being served beer AT a German school for a social event. And an area band trip to Austria, same deal.
@Lamak If the kids got drunk or alcohol poisoning or something, there would be issues, but I don't think we have any laws here for that. Maybe it's just Louisiana.
It's illegal here for kids to buy alcohol and for stores to sell it to them.
The law states that "public possession" of alcohol includes at a club, which is "de facto open to the public." Underage public possession and consumption of alcohol is not prohibited if the underage person is accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 21 years old.
What really surprised me was how much Amsterdam had gone non-smoking. Last time I was there two years ago bars were still really smoky. I think it's been banned or something. England has been that way for a couple years, so I didn't notice the change.
@CadeRoux That is probably why I don't see much of it. No smoking in bars/restaurants in Phoenix. Also you have to be a certain distance away from building doors if you are smoking outside

geez we like to make things so complicated here sometimes. It feels like I am not even a DBA. The devs tell us what they want in procs, etc. The Data Modelers model the DB, I get to write scripts

@jcolebrand shouldn't happen. Really. I work with it for 5-6 years now and I never lost a change set. It has SQL Server in behind, dang it! How can you hate your life? :)

@bluefeet I know. Seeing the DISTINCT in the original was a code smell for me. I'll have to play with it using some kind of row identifier (there should be one in the real data) in the same CONNECT which would stop things connecting wrong.

@jcolebrand Agree with @Marian, not a problem I've ever seen. Had dozens of cases of people checking in to a workspace or branch other than the one they thought they were checking in to however. Gated builds rejecting a check-in also pops up every other day.

If I were going to interview someone as an entry-level junior-grade DBA, just someone to start the concept of us having a DBA full time, to show management that it's a good thing, and this person is already interviewing for another position but we can scoop them for part-time DBA work, what would be good things to ask?
Or would it be better to ask if they're familiar with sp_Blitz and then ask them how scared they are of the results, and if they can do something about them? ;-)
