A: sql server return rows with or without null value in where clause

Mikael Erikssonwhere myColumn = @value or (myColumn is null and @value is null)

As it turns out the simple answer above that looks a bit complicated for SQL Server optimizer to do a good job with is actually turned into a seek if there is an index on myColumn..

gbn
6:37 AM
@MikaelEriksson Apparently there is an optimisation built in for this (@X IS NULL or X=@X)

@gbn Perhaps there is but if I change to
where myColumn = @value or
      @value is null
There will be a scan instead.

gbn
I saw it on SO or here, I don't know full details. Does it work for both NULL and non-NULL values?

Yes, it dose a seek regardless if the param is null or have a value.

7:03 AM
@MikaelEriksson The transformation is useful but quite fragile with more complex clauses. I personally prefer EXISTS (SELECT myColumn INTERSECT SELECT @value).

good morning
@SimonRigharts Confirm, most of our old problems were caused by replication. It was the crying baby of the family.

Q: ms sql - why does GO affect my select (Free Text Search)

railsI am experiencing a very weird behaviour from the management studio GO. I am following the full-Text Search tutorial and I run the following query over adventure works SELECT FT_TBL.ProductDescriptionID, FT_TBL.Description, KEY_TBL.RANK FROM Production.ProductDescription AS FT_TBL INNER JOI...

You can probably help us shed some light

7:26 AM
@PaulWhite I would never have thought of that. In my small test with about 2500 rows the intersect version creates a query plan with two seeks, a merge join and a stream aggregate where the other has one seek. Cardinality estimate for the stream aggregate is way off but if the behaviour is flimsy .... Good to know there are alternatives. Thanks!

gbn
@MikaelEriksson It takes some getting used to this syntax, but it's elegant

@MikaelEriksson can you share your test? You shouldn't be getting an index intersection there, it should be a single seek.
@gbn Saw it earlier, presume it's a bug, I didn't go so far as to check the Connect item, I'll revisit it shortly. Answering questions elsewhere just at the moment.
@MikaelEriksson More details in my blog post

@JackDouglas I thought I'd move the conversation over here. We currently have a 1/4 rack colo service with a UK based data center. We're lucky with the SQL licensing side as we have a BizSpark MSDN subscription which I intend to use to it's fullest! We've dabbled with Azure but shied away from moving the core application and DB over there due to the cost and predictability issues.

gbn
@ypercube It's clear now
Sounds like metadata visibility has hidden users, if he is connecting with a user who has no rights. Hard to prove though if it is a straight copy of the MDF/LDF files

@QF_Developer I hadn't heard of BizSpark, but it sounds very useful - do you get to keep the licenses or do they expire after a time
I agree about Azure btw (not that I'm an expert)

An answer proved to be useless for the asker after he added a slight requirement in the comment to the answer which wasn't included in the OP initially. Should we remove the answer and add the new requirement to the OP, or should we leave OP and the answer as is, so that it can be useful for anyone other reading the question in the future, and just suggest the asker to post the similar question but with that requirement included?
^^^ I'd ask this question in meta but not sure if it makes sense.

@QF_Developer If you are keen to cut your colo costs, I may still be able to help you out by renting you a node or two in one of these. The node(s) would have to be dedicated to you (ie we couldn't share VMs on the same node) to comply with Microsoft's licensing rules, but if you wished we could manage a virt platform on your node and take care of DR (eg snapshotting and snapshot shipping to a remote site).

2:33 PM
@bluefeet I edited your answer (with my suspicion)
I think he either has Nulls or he needs an additional join (to Categories) in the subquery because he has deleted data from the Categories and he has no FKs.

@ypercube possibly. I asked them to run two same queries to get the count of product ids in both tables. They stated they were equal though.

I read that comment:
@bluefeet Every product does indeed have a category. When I imported all the products, I added them to category_id 1169. I have since removed that category and Lemonstand shows its name as blank. I need to try find all products assigned to that blank, But that looks like its every product on the site :/ nightmare.. — StuBlackett 16 mins ago

OscarLOL, This is not possible. You can't modify the way Management Studio shows a table! Usually, you don't store passwords in DDBB, but the hash.

What a great answer.

@JackDouglas BizSpark is free for start up companies and comes with a very generous MSDN subscription. We still use a number of XS Azure VMs to run various background tasks in the application, plus all our media (images, video etc) are hosted on an Azure CDN. It's great for some areas but the cost of buying serious compute power is absurdly expensive.
@JackDouglas Those Supermicro nodes look pretty nifty, I've never seen that before! All our servers are 1u at the moment but as we scale out we can certainly consider that sort of arrangement. Where are they based?

@QF_Developer At the moment I have 1U servers too, spread between the two colo sites in Maidenhead. The MicroServer purchase is to replace them at one site but I'm waiting for the s3500s to be released sometime in June (hopefully on the 3rd but I've no confirmation of that yet)
Part of the logic is based on the economics of SPLA licensing, apart from SQL Server it is per-socket rather than per-core so single socket with as many cores as possible works well (there are 12-core E5s due out in Q3 as well)

A puppet state (also known as puppet government or marionette government) is a nominally sovereign state effectively controlled by a foreign power. A puppet state preserves the external paraphernalia of independence like a name, flag, anthem, constitution, law codes and motto but in reality is an organ of another state who has propelled its trusted ally from within the target nation into power. The term is a metaphor which compares a government to a puppet controlled by strings by an outside puppeteer. It is often used as a term of political criticism to denigrate a government which is ...

If you have a limited number of values for each partId and cardNumber, then you can use row_number() with an aggregate function/CASE combination: select partid, cardnumber, max(case when rn = 1 then rdrgrpid end) rd...

@FreshPrinceOfSO That's all you're going to say, "delusion?" Has no delusion ever helped anyone in the history of the world? Would you never delude a person who was about to die, in order to comfort him? Perhaps you are the parent of a child--would you say "honey, we're all going to die so start screaming and crying" or would you say "everything is going to be okay, here, put your head against my chest and close your eyes."? I'm not saying that it's all-around better to be deluded.

A: How can I explain SQL injection without technical jargon?

PolynomialThe way I demonstrate it to complete non-techies is with a simple analogy. Imagine you're a robot in a warehouse full of boxes. Your job is to fetch a box from somewhere in the warehouse, and put it on the conveyor belt. Robots need to be told what to do, so your programmer has given you a set o...

I'm just challenging the (to me) obviously incorrect statement that prayer has never helped anyone.

@ErikE it has deluded someone into believing it has helped

@FreshPrinceOfSO eh. that's a perspective ... and i guess that's better than being diluted

@FreshPrinceOfSO it depends on the context of "help"
Sometimes it helps people to feel better if they pray.

10:35 PM
@Zane ... but it's a delusion

However to say that if I pray for @FreshPrinceOfSO. It may make me feel nice but it cetainly doesn't help you.

@Zane make you feel nice? that's kind of selfish

@FreshPrinceOfSO i've found it's probably better and safer to attack someone's choice of MySQL over another RDBMS than to attach others' worldviews.

@swasheck no harm done in a discussion

@swasheck either can be fun.

10:37 PM
@Zane someone is in the hospital in serious condition; turning to prayer over the thought of trained medical professionals doing what they're trained and educated to is a delusion

@FreshPrinceOfSO whooooah. I'm not saying that.

@Zane so then when is prayer helpful

I'm saying if you're in the hospital getting treatment and prayer makes you feel better about your situation I'm fine with that.

@Zane ignorance is always an option

That can be helpful. Praying gives certain people peace of mind in dire situations and that can be helpful.

10:40 PM
@Zane it's a delusion. it isn't productive.

@FreshPrinceOfSO false dichotomy. there are some folks who would attempt to assert that prayer is all you need. there are also those who would assert that modern medicine is more effective. why can't there be a "higher being" who acts through the created order?

However if you are doing something like #prayforOklahoma I don't feel that's usefull in any way shape or form.

@swasheck it's not a false dichotomy if you're suggesting there's only one solution.. false dichotomy applies to more than 2

@FreshPrinceOfSO I'm a toatal athiest I do not beleive in the power of prayer or anything along those lines.

@FreshPrinceOfSO fair enough. sorry. i meant false dilemma/excluded middle.

10:43 PM
@Zane right, so apply that to an individual in critical condition in the hospital
@swasheck movement towards prayer is a movement away from science

p.s. ... this philosophical discussion is interrupting my candy crush play

@swasheck that's why it's prayer or trust the educated doctor

However when my grandfather was on his death bed I prayed with my grandmother every single day. I was not benificial in any sort of religious sense. However it was incredibly powerful and helpful to my grandmother.

@FreshPrinceOfSO if you switch the objects you know how vehemently you'd attack that statement. it's full of all kinds of flawed logic.
@FreshPrinceOfSO why can't it be both?

@swasheck example?
@swasheck contradiction

10:47 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO i dont know which world you live in, but that's as ignorant of a statement as the religious person who says that faith must necessarily reject science. it's baffling to me.
@FreshPrinceOfSO your bias is inhibiting you from seeing the middle, mediating position that it is possible to hold both with equal regard.

@Zane to me it sounds like a conflict of your views. i've been in a similar situation and used positive memories to make light of the end
@swasheck i still need an example

@FreshPrinceOfSO what it sounds like is that you're basing your assumptions on caricatures of fringe population groups
@FreshPrinceOfSO of what?

@swasheck I don't know about that. We have a lot of evidence to back up scientific claims. We have very little to suggest any supernatural phenomena exist.

@swasheck ad hominem.. great argument
@swasheck basing it off personal experiences and movement away from religion

@FreshPrinceOfSO false. i didnt attack you. it's a statement of ignorance. i never once attacked your character.
@FreshPrinceOfSO so you admit your bias.

10:50 PM
@swasheck you're not attacking the argument
@swasheck no bias in saying that i've been on both sides

I am not sure this is necessarily the best place for this discussion

@bluefeet this doesn't fall under "off-site discussion" ?

@FreshPrinceOfSO yes. i'm attacking the argument that there is no middle ground. both sides are guilty of not being able to perceive a mediating position. ad hominem would be me attempting to discredit you by specifically attacking your character.

@swasheck well actually no. one side asserts that there is some mediating ground, while the other doesn't.

@FreshPrinceOfSO You're missing the point it wasn't about my views. It was about somebody elses. I'm not saying prayer has mystical powers or any such thing. However I'm not saying it has no benefit. I'm saying to the person praying it can still be psycologically beneficial as can meditation.

10:53 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO The problem is this can be a very heated topic and while off-topic is ok in here, I personally think this isn't the place for it.

@FreshPrinceOfSO i think you're conflating experiencing both sides with acknowledging the relative merit of each side
@FreshPrinceOfSO so it's still a false dilemma for the one who won't see the middle

@bluefeet I'm going to agree with bluefeet here, there are better places for this discussion

Typically the bar.

@bluefeet I'm under the assumption that people can discuss topics without the need for heat

@FreshPrinceOfSO ad hominem would be "you've been known for trolling on SO so i don't know why i should even engage this conversation"

10:54 PM
@swasheck not if the middle is only asserted by one side, not the other.

@FreshPrinceOfSO Treat it like a first date - no religion, politics or sex discussion. :)

@FreshPrinceOfSO Politics and religion are topics that should be avoided
IMO

@swasheck not according to my logic book

meh
ok

@FreshPrinceOfSO If the only effect of an agent is to induce a mental state, and that mental state is of positive net benefit for the organism, does it matter that the state may not reflect reality? Do you believe that every thought you have fully reflects reality?

10:55 PM
have fun with the windmills, @FreshPrinceOfSO

Getting metaphilosophical in here, whoa.

@SimonRigharts covered a lot of that on my first date, actually
@ErikE your second question doesn't follow your first

@FreshPrinceOfSO Nice way to sidestep the questions. Perhaps they don't follow. Will you answer them?

trying to type out my answers, if you allow me

@FreshPrinceOfSO I am sitting here preventing you from answering through prayer.

10:57 PM
@SimonRigharts I don't know if I would say that. If someone I'm dating is not cool with me being an Athiest then I'd rather find out before I buy 3 or 4 dinners/ show tickets :)

@FreshPrinceOfSO Heh... How exactly would I go about disallowing you from answering? :)

@ErikE if the agent here is prayer, and prayer induces a mental state that produces a positive net benefit for the organism, then that organism must consistently apply that agent.

@FreshPrinceOfSO Must?

@ErikE further, that agent may not conflict with the principle of any contradicting agent
