@billinkc I decided to make a separate family account before uploading thousands of tracks then found you cannot stream from the same account to two devices at once - up to 14,602 tracks there. I tend to buy on Amazon and download and upload from same folder, so it's simple enough. Nice that Amazon put in that AutoRip - some of those 1000 tracks were not ripped to Google for some reason.

@swasheck She has trouble remembering her own. Mine would be a burden at the minimum. And plus, I'm insane and don't like sharing passwords

@Zane They got it as a hand-me-down for Christmas. Then the 7yo came complaining that her iPod (another old hand-me-down) was not an iPod Touch and all her kids at school thought it was a touch when she said she would bring it in for their music/dance party thing. Childhood these days is screwed up. She had serious anxiety about this.

I told Sydney how when her mom and I were first dating that I got her one of the first Windows-compatible iPods (I already had my own hard drive player - the PJB, but the iPod was just starting to take off), and that when she showed it to people they didn't even know what it was. They didn't even know the iPod name and Steve Jobs hadn't been publicly beatified.

I don't like the layout. The cost is outrageous and the software they use on your computer is basically malware.

Also I find IOS to be horribly cluttered design.

My company just bought me an iPhone. To which I responded: "Meh, why can't I just use my Droid?"

@Zane Absolutely. Playing with an iPhone, I feel very "locked in" too. Apple's message is "Our way is best, so you shall do it that way."

My desktop is clean on my PC and my phone only objects I need often are kept.

All others can be accessed when needed through startbar/app button

Well to offer a different opinion, I gave up on Windows years ago. Mac OS is a pretty cheap OS (and one license is eligible for multiple devices). And if you think it's bloated or cluttered compared to Windows...

IOS is just a heap of icons scattered all over the place.

Come on Zane, you can make a scattered mess of icons on any OS. iOS lets you organize into folders as much as you want. I have tons of apps but only 2 app screens.

iOS is very much the winner of the first smartphone war between Apple, Blackberry, WinMo and Palm - and it shows. Android and WP8 have a good head start, and it will be interesting to see if Apple can leapfrog them in the next couple generations.

@AaronBertrand i'll agree with this. apple has been concerned with the user experience for far longer than microsoft.

@AaronBertrand I'm talking about IOS not MacOS. My only problem with Mac Desktop/Laptops is they are to expensive.

@swasheck I would dispute that they have actually gone as far as people say with the polish. There are a lot of parts of iOS and OSX where there are really bad UX issues.

@Zane iTunes isn't any better on OSX from what I can see. Still the same confusing bullshit prompts that can wipe your iPod in a single click misreading their poor copy and technobabble.

@Zane they've done a half-decent job with Office, but it took several generations and it's still 1.5-2 revs behind IMHO.

That's what I was referring to and I used the PC example for I like a clean desktop and IOS just isn't very clean.

It's a Ford/Chevy argument for the most part. Personally, I like that I have more freedom with my Droid phone than I've experienced with i* products, but I'm an edge case in that I like that flexibility.

i find it very interesting how religiously all sides hold to their platform of choice.

Personally, I'd recommend an iPhone for my mom if she ever wanted a smart phone.

@AaronBertrand Conceptually, the whole thing with the media you send to your phone not being backed up vs. the media generated on the phone being backed up is wrong. A backup should be a backup. Apple isn't the only one guilty, but before we talk about how it's all so EASY, those people should explain all that stuff like iCloud to their wife or mother.

Amusingly enough, we had a new mobile phone policy attached to the new iPhone I got. My company is disallowing the following from within: Dropbox, iCloud, Skydrive, and Google Drive

@MikeFal we disallow iCloud because our users sync'd their calendars which, in turn, was sync'd to their Exchange account, and iCloud wiped out their Exchange calendar. in this case, we're saving end users from themselves :)

So last night I fixed a massive SQL T Log file, now I have massive SQL T Log backup file. do i just treat that like a normal T Log backup ?

You could always start your log chain over, I suppose, and discard the older log backups...

...or just let it get processed as normal and only worry about it if you have to recover before your next full backup. Are you using log shipping, mirroring, etc.?

@ypercube No, the query doesn't preserve the grouping in general. It does most of the time, but that is just because the db doesn't happen to rearrange it very much.

@swasheck yeah, the backup type for the T Log was full instead of Transaction so it was constantly growing, then last night i figured out how to fix that. and now it's back under control again.

@Patrick so wait, is your database currently in full or simple?

@Patrick what that indicates is that you're not backing up the db ... or you had a crapload of CRUD

@Faheem: In your question, you used a different ORDER BY than Lamaks'. If Lamak's query worked, why don't you keep that ordering (and use window fucntions as you prefer)?

@Patrick ah ok. Well if you need to keep the ability to restore to any point in time in the past two weeks, you'll have to keep that t-log file along with all the others, until it is two weeks old. If you don't need that ability, you can safely delete it (and may as well delete all the others at that point) once you take your next full (+at least 1 t-log to be safe).

@AaronBertrand thank you, because of it's size, i just wanted to make sure. We take nightly full backups and log backups every 2 hours. I will just delete this backup when it's older than 2 weeks like normal

I am trying to find the Quarter from the firstday of the week. For example, The first day of the week is 12/31/2012 I want the quarter to say Q1 2013. But if I find the Qtr from the specific date it says Q4 2012.

I have to make our reporting know what each customer considers the first day of the week. Some of them use Wednesday.

@bluefeet probably something clever comparing datepart(day) and datepart(weekday) % 7 etc.

@ypercube Ok, if that is what he is doing, then that looks problematic to me, because if there is a tie for avg_pval DESC, avg_margstat, then I don't see why the db would have them kept in separate groups. This doesn't seem to happen in practice, but I bet one could see this if margstat was removed.

@Zane you should have a CompanySettings table with a datefirst. Then when you run reporting queries issue SET DATEFIRST @CompanyDateFirst etc.

We had one customer who wants to ignore leap years....

I bet the record industry (what's left of it) is Tuesday -> Monday, and the movie industry is Friday -> Thursday. Except when holidays let movies open earlier and still call it the weekend...

Monday to Sunday is standard in Greece at least (and probably in other european countries)

Is the only difference between ALTER INDEX [index_name] on [object_name] REBUILD with (ONLINE=OFF, FILLFACTOR=90) and DBCC DBREINDEX([dbname], 90) just that the DBCC command will reindex all of the indexes on all of the tables in the database?
