@MarkHulkalo I've found the best course of action is to want to be patted down a little too much. Walk up to them with a huge smile and ask them if you're going to be patted down.

Turns out that if your companion is involved in the next step of a mission you have on your to-do list, and they're not following you, they'll be waiting wherever that next step is supposed to be. Piper never went back to Sanctuary or her Publick Occurences office. But when I gave up and continued one of my quests, I found her waiting to start a scene at the quest location.

One thing I have to hand them, they were SEO experts. You'd google something, and three quarters of the results on the first page would be to various permutations of the same page on e-e, all hiding the answers until you either used dev tools to modify the CSS and see it, or paid their ransom for an account.
@Herringbone_Cat very naughty of them, I guess I never went after too many answers in quick sucession... My understanding was that google required them to make the text available if they wanted it to show up in search results...
