3:00 PM
relevant NSFW link: oglaf.com
today's one is rather amusing

This discussion makes me feel like I'm in a retirement house right now.

Well, the article on chakram didn't have any pictures of the Warrior Princess. So it was easy to stay focused.

@Simon read the oglaf link - and click through the next pages

@RoryAlsop Bleh, the NSFW makes me believe that I should stay away from it.

Yeah, we need to develop some sort of add-on codes for NSFW to clarify exactly how NSFW it is. I mean, are we talking full nude pics, or just some strong language in the music?

3:02 PM
^
My definition of NSFW implies full nudity, or very suggestive clothes.

@Simon it's a cartoon. This one doesn't have nudity - but it does have ogres in bikinis

lawl

@RoryAlsop is it the armor onw
IT IS
oglaf is the only webcomic i get excited for

And there's an ad at the bottom with anime tits.
I'LL STAY AWAY, LADS.

the masochist cupcake one was so hilarious

3:04 PM
@Ohnana nurd

@Simon *sex nurd

@Simon you don't need to click on that
@Ohnana snurd

@RoryAlsop bleh

@Simon Ad with tits? Didn't notice tits, much less an ad. AdBlock/NoScript FTW?

@Iszi I don't mind ads, usually.

3:07 PM
If all ads had tits, I doubt most of the world would mind either.

raz
@Iszi New extension: AdBlockAcceptTits

There has to be a tits detection software, right?

I think I'm going to run Windows 10 TP as my main OS

@kalina ballsy

what's the worst that could happen?

3:13 PM
#window

raz
@kalina You could kill somebody... but that's the absolute worst case.

you could be using windows

well, from my use so far it's basically as stable as any other version of Windows

Which means it randomly freezes and you have to do a hard reset.

which, since you're all a bunch of nerds is going to say "not that stable, then"
the only time my PC has crashed is when I tripped over the audio cables and physically broke the soundcard while it was powered
and I'll accept that as user error

raz
3:15 PM
@kalina I once installed a sound card with the computer running. Wasn't my smartest idea ever.

@raz I've always wondered how resilient a PC would be to this but have never tried it myself

Screw you, electrostatic.

Raz - did it work?
I have hot swapped all sorts of cards, drives, even power supplies in servers :-)

raz
@RoryAlsop Fried the sound card
Had to buy a new one.
As soon as I plugged it into the PCIx slot I thought, "I'm dumb"

@raz no, destruction of the entire universe and all of space and time, that would be the absolute worst.
or having to listen to Justin Bieber. Those two are about equal.

3:18 PM
or being Simon
all three, tied

She's always begging for my attention.

raz
@AviD That seems like -0 chances. Killing someone is much more likely. Especially if you happen to throw your computer because Win10 did something stupid.

Yup, it's that day, I can't spell.

@raz you didnt say anything about likelihood. You stated "the absolute worst case"
with like, italics and everything.

even if my system becomes a borderline unusable pile of crap after running Windows 10 TP as my main environment
at least Microsoft will get to collect data about how all of my somewhat exotic hardware hates their OS
so maybe they could fix it before service pack 1
(for a change)

3:21 PM
@kalina you tied @Simon to Justin Bieber? Now that is harsh!

HEY

besides, if @RoryAlsop installs a beta OS on his TARDIS console, causing the whole thing to explode, it wouldnt be so unlikely.

cruel and unusual punishment

@kalina Microsoft pwns all your data because TP monitors everything & forwards it to them.

@RoryAlsop those are fighting words

3:21 PM
@Ohnana Justin isn't here to hear it :-)

HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

@Iszi that's really the only thing that makes me pause

@Simon :-)

it's not like my Microsoft account has my real name on it anyway

You're a real name.

3:24 PM
@kalina Maybe not, but consider all the websites you visit, e-mails you send/receive, etc. on a daily basis.

@Iszi I don't email on a desktop

Technical Preview very clearly states they're doing keylogging & voice recording.

Yeah, way too mainstream.

and well, unless Microsoft are interested in DMZ chats and randomly googling
VOICE RECORDING?!

okay, short ontopic break: anybody have experience with oracle ADF?

@Iszi afsldfjsdf?

@AviD nobody cares

@AviD How is Win10TP privacy not on-topic?

@AviD sorry, no - been a while since I was Oracle-y

@kalina unfortunately true

3:25 PM
@Iszi I guess I'll just input 100dB of noise for the entire time my PC is running

@Iszi SWEET CHRIST ON A CRACKER

@RoryAlsop Yeah, you blew past that rank centuries ago.

@Iszi well I started typing before you accidentally veered ontopic

@Iszi heh

ok I guess I'm sticking with Windows 8.1 then

3:26 PM
@RoryAlsop this isnt even standard oracley, its java-ey

@AviD So, that's more "Sunny"?

not sure. its such a craptastic framework that I wouldnt expect Sun to build it.

SSDs and RAID, talk to me

I mean, yeah, it does seem along the lines of what Oracle would build. Just meant that its not what @RoryAlsop was expecting.

@Iszi it's sounding a lot like coffee

3:28 PM
since he only knows Oracle as the database company.

does nobody here have experience with SSDs in RAID?

@kalina raid 0 all the way

@kalina I do not. However I'm getting some experience now with Storage Spaces (on @JourneymanGeek's recommendation), and quite please so far.
though you cant use it for the book disk.

@Ohnana not really, RAID, is it

Java is a general-purpose computer programming language that is concurrent, class-based, object-oriented, and specifically designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It is intended to let application developers "write once, run anywhere" (WORA), meaning that code that runs on one platform does not need to be recompiled to run on another. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture. Java is, as of 2015, one of the most popular programming languages in use, particularly for client-server...
Sun released the first 1.0.

3:30 PM
@Iszi durpadurp?
I was talking about ADF, not Java.

@AviD pretty much, yeah - although as my eldest brother works for them I should know better

and duh I know duh that sunduh released duhjavaduh

uh

5 mins ago, by AviD
@RoryAlsop this isnt even standard oracley, its java-ey

@kalina but think of all the speed you could get

3:32 PM
@Iszi wow, did you take extra simonpills today?

@Ohnana I'm not interested in speed

@AviD was trying to find the link to ASDF - but doing that on mobile is tricky. It doesn't want to give you the URL

simonpillswat

I was saying that Oracle ADF is not typical Oracle (i.e. database for @RoryAlsop), but a Java-ey framework.

The speed of an SSD by itself is sufficient, I'm after redundancy

3:32 PM
@Simon apparently you are an amphetamine

RAID 0 has no redundancy

@AviD Reminds me. Haven't taken my ADD meds yet. Hope there's nothing shiny between me and the pills right now.

aw yeah boi

so it's not fit for purpose
@Iszi or a squirrel
it's always a squirrel or a bird doing something in my field of vision when I need to concentrate

@kalina yeah I know I'm being stupid. If I'm completely serious, something like RAID 5 or something would thrash those disks and kill them

3:34 PM
@Ohnana which was my question...
I know SSDs in RAID was a bad idea a few years ago
Is it still a bad idea?

@Ohnana something like or something

@kalina I read up on it recently, supposedly some very good options.

obviously I need to befriend some actual nerds
so that I can just ask a question, get a full suggested solution and be on my way

if im not mistaken, some mobos even have RAID SSD built in.
@kalina @JourneymanGeek would have the information you need.

@kalina if you have the high endurance stuff it's actually decent
@Simon shaddap

3:35 PM
Basically, now that 500GB SSDs are cheap

also, I am assuming that budget is not a big constraint for you.

@Ohnana pls

so you have better options

I was wondering if sticking 5 or 6 of them in RAID 5 would still have the massively negative drain on life impact it did a few years ago

@AviD Doesn't that just make it RAD?

3:36 PM
@Iszi independent? wat?

@AviD not really but I also would choose to have the drives acting independently if doing RAID without destroying the disks involved buying a separate controller

@kalina check the endurance rating on them. do some math and see how much data you'll be moving around approximately

because... cba with that

@AviD According to Wiki (and the way I learned it) it was originally "inexpensive".

I really just want to plug it all into each other and turn it on, booting first time, OS installed with the second boot, software installed with the third

3:37 PM
@Iszi not anymore

RAID (originally redundant array of inexpensive disks; now commonly redundant array of independent disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy or performance improvement. Data is distributed across the drives in one of several ways, referred to as RAID levels, depending on the specific level of redundancy and performance required. The different schemes or architectures are named by the word RAID followed by a number (e.g. RAID 0, RAID 1). Each scheme provides a different balance between the...

I hate diagnosing problems

> now commonly redundant array of independent disks

@Iszi Oh, you're one of those fact nurdz? We love dem fact nurdz.

@Simon STFU. You're still dispwned.

3:38 PM
@kalina so just go with 3-way mirroring.

hahahahaha

@kalina i mean, having one disk for the OS/system files and one for user files is also a good redundancy strategy

@AviD Sounds kinky.

@AviD mmmh, I do my mirroring to a separate machine when the PC is idle

@Ohnana DAFUQ? There's zero redundancy there.

3:38 PM
backing up the user drive performs reads so it doesn't kill it

@Ohnana its only redundant if there are 2 disks for each of those

I redundant your mom.

Load distribution, sure. But no redundancy.

@Iszi also other benefits. but no redundancy.

redundancy isn't quite right there. robust?

3:39 PM
it's not robust either

for a user desktop it's more than sufficient IMHO

@Ohnana wrong, redundancy is exactly riught.

riught

as that was the parameters of the requirement.

@AviD this is why I don't work as a sysadmin

3:40 PM
my current setup is 3 SSDs and 2 spinning disks in RAID 0
which is fine, but I want to lose the noisy ones
everything on the spinning disks is mirrored onto another PC
everything on the SSDs could be downloaded again

Funny thing about RAID - some levels are really just AID. You can't have the R without mirroring or parity.

yes, I know "RAID 0" is not RAID
yet it is illogical to me why RAID 0+1 is slower than RAID 1+0/10

Yeah, come to think... 0 is really the only one lacking R.

(that isn't an invite to explain why, I don't care so I won't retain anything you tell me on the subject)
I'm not really a fan of using twice as many disks and running RAID 1/10/1+0/why are there so many different numbers for basically the smae thing

@kalina its because you have to reverse the parity.

3:44 PM
@AviD Just to be clear, that's parity there - not polarity.

I said no

@Iszi yes exactly :-)

'Cause when you start doing the latter, we end up in wormholes and crap.

I gave @RoryAlsop a Doctor who joke, and a bad pun, all rolled into one.

wormholes and crap?

3:45 PM
@kalina sure, any idea how much crap is in dem wormholes?

no

@AviD If we're talking about birds, that's just plain sick.

@Iszi it is disrespectful to call women "birds".

since I currently host my pagefile on the spinning disks, should I get a separate SSD exclusively for temporary files/page file?
to save wear on the other drives

@AviD No, I literally meant "birds". As in, they'd call a "wormhole" what we call a "piehole".

3:46 PM
@kalina for performance, or for disk lifetime?

@AviD the latter

Then again, I'm sure there's many an Internet video demonstrating that there are in fact various different types of "pieholes".

good question.

Rule 34 that.

temp files and pagefiles is the bulk of the writing on a day to day basis, surely

3:47 PM
a while ago they were saying that the wear of a typical OS doesnt affect lifetime that much, but still not quite ignorable. wonder if thats changed yet.

It's a tuna, a tinned tuna.

@Iszi birds say "Shut your wormhole, simon" ?

o

@Iszi 34?

@AviD I would have gone back to the sci-fi jokes, and ended that with "wesley", but yeah.
@AviD Ah, right. Fix that for me?
Nevermind. Ninja'd.

3:49 PM
@Iszi no, I want evidence of your #simonness to persist forevermore.
damn.

@AviD That's what an edit history is for.

#meness

So, we're all in agreement that RAID 0 with high-end hardware is really just AD?

depends what "AD" means

Active Directory.

3:51 PM
@kalina Just taking the R and I out of RAID.

@Simon nurd

@Iszi hang on, still reviewing rule 34
4

oic

But mis-translate as you like. That's how things stay interesting.

well that makes sense

3:51 PM
with safe search on, you actually get some funny stuff

here I go making a fool out of myself
but surely RAID 0 is basically just JBOD striped across the disks

or google image search for "rule 34 no exceptions"

I am not googling rule 34

ITS STARWARS
star wars is never offensive

it's starwars porn

well except for jar jar frikkin binks.

starwars is offensive

As someone who only has seen 1 star wars movie, I'm very offended.

@AviD Saw one of those with Roombas once. Never found it again. :-(
@AviD Starred as interesting, in vain hopes of countering flags of offensiveness.
^ Out-of-context awesomeness.

3:56 PM
@LucasKauffman How was the Pannepot? I should really taste it at some point

@Adnan In the midst of talking about Rule 34 and porn, you ask about tasting something with a name like "Pannepot"?
Smooth.

I want the boring @Iszi back.
The cheerful one sucks.

@Simon this is why you kill the chat

@Ohnana I'm starting to hope that is NOT a euphemism.

pls

3:59 PM
@AviD filthy mod is filthy
