Yeah, I'm not good with that stuff. :)
Compliance is yawn.

@kalina If your raid controller supports trim, it should be ok. Otherwise no, I'd rather go with softraid.
or just SSDs since they are already significantly faster than spinning rust drives

@TildalWave Their new marketing person doesn't "get" social media marketing ... reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/2p6kbq/duo_security_2fa

1:15 AM
@schroeder yeah this one deserves a few upvotes reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/2p6kbq/duo_security_2fa/co44ilw

1:42 AM
@schroeder oh man that's a huge fail

2:29 AM
What do you guys use to send e-mails with your domain name cleanly?
It's no longer free with Google :(

6 hours later…
8:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek that was my thought on it too
@Simon host your own mailserver

@kalina it's horrible! I think the guys from UX.SE have been having a go at them :-)

certainly made me double take
"huh, did I just click on the right thing?"
"WHAT HAVE I DONE?"
"oh wtf that's so ugly"
*close tab*
at least I'm awake now, after having my eyes offended
I'm going home tonight
I'm certainly looking forward to it, the level of background drama around these parts seems to be increasing exponentially the longer I'm here, it seems
@Simon read the title, WTF achieved

9:11 AM
@kalina their chat room is cool though. Scroll up and down :-)

I can't
It would break my DMZ-only-ness
what with me being a former regular in there

yesterday, by AviD
@TerryChia no. No no no. Just no.

anyway, enough of the complaints, I'm sure Jin spent hours working on that
obviously with his eyes closed, and/or with a blindfold on
but still, that's somebody's hard work

@kalina hey hey, come on. For all you know he may have been high.

@kalina that one wasn't Jin

9:17 AM
@RoryAlsop that explains everything
tell Jin that it's obvious

It was Kurtis
Kurtis Beavers, Bloomington, IN
1 1 6

@RoryAlsop mornin' hows the snow out your way

@AviD that would have improved the design or prevented it from being done at all

@RоryMcCune lovely - 4 inches or so

@RoryAlsop it's a shame. We will miss him.

9:18 AM
@RoryAlsop yeah that's about what we've got... looks nice, but was a pain to clear off the drive

@RоryMcCune TW....SS?

@AviD well the missus was thinking it was hard work as well yep.

"lovely" and "4 inches"

damn!

hmm

9:20 AM
@kalina and didn't even get a star :-)
@kalina expecting another 6 inches later...
2

@RoryAlsop nobody cares about stars

@RoryAlsop yes, yes you did

^^^ quality album cover

@AviD lol
@RоryMcCune it's scary

9:20 AM
@RoryAlsop I didnt just do that, it was there before

@RoryAlsop pretty much, but that just adds to the quality, as presumably the scariness is not intentional

apparently I can't see gravatar

@kalina - an ad-blocker?

I don't ad block gravatar
ghostery hasn't decided to block gravatar either
and if I disconnect from my VPN everything works
so I blame them
it's all their fault

@kalina oh - odd

9:27 AM
I love ghostery
what a plugin
it's so useful it should be like standard functionality

9:48 AM
I just can't handle all that red
how am I supposed to use that site now

9:59 AM
@kalina Some browser plugin that allows you to restyle a website? Or use the css from some other site.

why would I do that
it's much less effort to just stop using the site
there are other far less red websites to ask movie questions on

@RoryAlsop ^
0 to 60 in 3 seconds

@AviD neat :-)

Tesla D looks fun but I'm not sure it's worth the money
most of my journies are long distance

10:20 AM
@kalina you can tell Simon is not here by the lack of response to that :op
@AviD maan that would be sooooo cool

@AviD I WANT ONE!!!
(but I like the noise of my engine)
And cost is an issue
And we don't have enough electric stations here

@RoryAlsop you could have one of the fake engine noise packs they have....
@RoryAlsop yeah that is a problem in scotland although I did see some charging stations in Glasgow the other day

@RоryMcCune why would you do that?

@kalina people like engine noise...

an electric car is ideal for playing back music
(in terms of cars, anyway)

10:29 AM
@kalina for some people engine noise is music :)

I'm not one of those people

I am
I really really am
A flat 4 boxer turbocharged subaru engine is music

@kalina and for talking on the phone....

I don't talk on the phone while driving
chat... text... browse the internet...
not talk, though
I have perfected my "talking to Google and actually getting what you said to appear on the screen" voice

10:44 AM
neither do I - I'm rarely in the car often enough and long enough when I have so much to do...

Ok Google
blip

In the car I have even disconnected the radio so I can't possibly be persuaded to turn it on. My options are: engine, or my entire music collection (and some audiobooks I suppose)

oh what
flights in and out of manchester are stopped?

@kalina wow - snow that bad?

there is no snow here
apparently manchester airport looks like this:
wonder if I can get a flight out of london instead

10:54 AM
Is lovely here
need to go for a drive
to get
coffee and lunch

Last tweet I saw was saying Mancehster Airport is closed.

and other good reasons

But City Center is fairly snowless last camera I looked at

why is it
that you
@RoryAlsop
are typing
like @Lighty
hm?

he is on
his mobile

10:55 AM
How does lighty type? Using fingers as well?

that's not
really a good

guys
please

No - am on my main PC

excuse

well, he does

10:56 AM
you all gone
mad

use an iphone
and he doesnt
know how to
use an iphone

oh right

that's an interesting sentence @AviD
I don't have an iPhone

an iphone user
that explains

heehee

10:56 AM
maybe he does, if he is someone else

all the things

okay, you've all just gone and #simonized the DMZ.

@AviD mod abuse

you've #simonized the hell out of it.

(ie folks abusing a mod)

10:58 AM
It's going to take me 14 hours to drive home
or
3 hours and a short flight
+ a shitload of waiting

you have a weird sex life.

I'm not discussing my sex life
no.
nobody wants to know

thank goodness.

I'm talking about my getting home life
since I have stuff I have to do tomorrow and that requires other stuff that is not currently with me
since I am terrible at planning more than a few hours ahead when I do impulsive travelling
apparently there is a snow warning here as well for later today

Well I hope you manage to get home safe @kalina :-)

11:03 AM
@kalina I didn't mean that when I wrote a similar thing earlier...

@RoryAlsop well, obviously

@kalina :-)

the fact you actually felt you needed to clarify that makes me super suspicious, though
3 hours of waiting for a connecting flight
I need my own plane
somebody buy me a plane for christmas

@kalina Now this is something I agree on. I was always jealous of Iron Maiden for this.

ok, I read this completely wrong
basically, I can leave today, and no matter which flight I take out of any airport in London it's a 10+ hour trip with a massive (9 hour) wait at another airport
or I can leave tomorrow, get a non-stop flight, and be there in an hour
and since it has just started snowing here
nevermind, enacting the awkward journey instead
back later

11:25 AM
@RoryAlsop and Taylor Swift.
oh cool, I just learned some Catalanian curse words.
and who says SE is not educational.

1 hour later…
12:31 PM
@kalina Bleh, I don't wanna do that but I might have to.
I just want my web service to send confirmation emails.

12:52 PM
@Simon does it have to be from a domain you own?
otherwise would something like Sendgrid work?

@RоryMcCune Yes.

@Simon shame, think you can do that from sendgrid but not on the cheaper plans...

aw :(
Thanks though!

@Simon It's always either pay $$ or do the work.
Amazon SES may work though,aws.amazon.com/ses

@TerryChia or use a service that's in start-up and hasn't got round to charging yet :)

12:54 PM
It's definitely more difficult to use than Sendgrid and the likes but much much simpler than hosting your own mail server.

@TerryChia Hum I'll check that out.
I might just set up a mail server on the very same VPS that has the web service.

@Simon Not a good idea.
Self-hosting a mail server is never a good idea. ;)

@TerryChia Even if I'm not expecting a huge user-base
?
I knoooooow!
I'm trying to convince myself.
I just need to send out links with hashes for e-mail validation.

Getting email delivered reliably is a bitch.

It's so damn simple, yet it seems like I'd need to use a @gmail.com account -.-
Is there a domain registrar that offers an smtp as default?
I'm fairly sure that namecheap used to do it, now you have to pay.

1:09 PM
@RоryMcCune Is that the hardcore version of "Touched By Angels"? :)
2

@TildalWave it definitely sounds a bit dodgy, as @TerryChia 's use of his favourite GIF would indicate...

@RоryMcCune I have that gif basically linked to a certain other user in my mind.

@RоryMcCune I was talking about music and titles of albums, what did you think I was talking of? :))

@TildalWave no idea guv

1:21 PM
@Arperum Fei?

@TerryChia Yup, I was just not mentioning his name (although I am perfectly capable of typing it out if I want)

nah whenever I see that GIF it just reminds me of Christina Hendricks role in Firefly... which is not a bad thing :)

@RоryMcCune Fei used to use it all the time when @kalina says something. :)

raz
@RоryMcCune We've had this conversation before

@raz We've had many conversations before.

1:27 PM
@TerryChia Yup.

@raz yeah true but are you saying that remembering that role again is necessarily a bad thing?

raz
@RоryMcCune haha, not at all. I was just commenting on how you typed the exact same message the last time the gif came up.

@raz yeah, well I'm old, I often forget I've done stuff :)

@RоryMcCune senile but consistent, eh?
but OHHH MAAYYY GAAAWWWWD this ADF stuff is so frikkkkin boring
I used to enjoy learning a new framework's architecture, when did I get so old?

@AviD nice :op the last time I said that was like 3 months ago... I challenge you to remember what you said that day in the DMZ :op

1:34 PM
hmm must be around the time that Node.js was being called "great"

@AviD ADF?

that's it then, node.js officially broke me.

@AviD: Yanno what I love to say about hammers, right?

@JourneymanGeek "If you're going to sit on a hammer, better make sure it goes lengthwise" ?
@TerryChia Oracle ADF. kinda like a java framework, kinda like JSF, kinda like Magik. Kinda like root canal for your brain.

man, that is a loud disk 0_0

1:38 PM
@RоryMcCune no clue, same thing?

@AviD "Oracle". "root canal for your brain" Yup.

@AviD: I'm planning on benchmarking a storage spaces setup.
Prolly not going to use it. Grabbed an old/spare disk and its making slightly grindy noises

@RоryMcCune actually, absolutely nothing. what?
@JourneymanGeek not going to use SS?

Naw. not that disk

@AviD exactly but you don't remember stuff that far back either way :op

1:40 PM
@RоryMcCune ya lost me

@AviD my general point was that most people don't remember what they said in casual conversation (e.g. the DMZ) 3 months ago :)
I was attempting to defend my lack of senility
it's something we old people do

aahhh gotcha
but thats what the internet is for
external memory for your brain

@RоryMcCune looks at @RoryAlsop.

better indexing, too

@AviD Or for meeting awesome people like #me.
And laughing at @JourneymanGeek's dog.

1:42 PM
2 days ago, by AviD
@TerryChia no. No no no. Just no.

pls terry

@AviD hell yeah without OneNote/Evernote/Google I'd be stuffed

@TerryChia heeey dont misuse me

@Simon: meh, you're merely jealous he's smarter than you ;p

dammit

1:43 PM
(not that that's hard)
3

@TerryChia When I was 6, I had an imaginary friend called Terry. Will you make me dream come true and be my real friend?

@AviD BTW if you're looking for an expert on Oracle Tech, I understand that @Simon is the go to person

@JourneymanGeek TWSS!

@JourneymanGeek :'(

1:43 PM
@RоryMcCune pls

@Simon exactly

@RоryMcCune He's writing enterprise PHP now?

hehehehe

@TerryChia good description of Oracle I like it

@TerryChia PLS
At least I'm doing Symfony2 this morning.
It's based-off django.

1:44 PM
PLS or Pls may refer to: == Organizations == Partito Liberale Svizzero (Italian for Liberal Party of Switzerland) Pioneer Library System, libraries operating in several counties in Oklahoma Poculi Ludique Societas, Medieval & Renaissance Players of Toronto Polska Liga Siatkówki (English: Polish Volleyball League) Princeton Law School, a department of Princeton University from 1847 until 1852 Premier League Soccer, an Indian football league competition based in West Bengal == Science and technology == Partial least squares regression, a statistical method (also known as "projection to la...

@Simon which is based off rails, so you're not in too bad a place really
(inb4 a python person tells me Django came first)

isnt django a desert rat?

@RоryMcCune I really like django! So far, it just makes a lot of sense.

@RоryMcCune Django did come first. :)

RoR is based-off django?

1:46 PM
But they don't really have much in common besides both being monolithic frameworks.

o

@Simon don't think so..

Rails (and Ruby) is waaaaay more magical than Django.

@TerryChia isn't Django REST'y like rails

Magical in a good or bad way?

1:47 PM
@Simon both

lulz

@RоryMcCune That's like saying all HTTP frameworks are similar to rails...

@TerryChia nope it's like saying all scripting language MVC REST frameworks that came out around the same time are like rails :)

@RоryMcCune Errr no. :)

yeah, now that you mention it Rails IS a lot like node.js.
NOT.

1:48 PM
The main reason why I'm making my résumé website in django is because I want @TerryChia to stop laughing at me.

@Simon I'll never stop laughing at you.

noooot gonn' happen.

That's the spirit, boiz.

@TerryChia Djano is MVC? REST based? written in a scripting language? came out at roughly the same time as rails?

@RоryMcCune MVC, yes.

1:49 PM
@Simon Except maybe when @Lighty is around.

@TerryChia Appreciated.

@Simon and it came out the same year as rails

@AviD ohhh I was thinking of RANGO. different.

@RоryMcCune Interesting. I might try RoR one day.
I wanna master django first though.

@Simon really? "master"?
you cant even master your own domain.

1:51 PM
@AviD Yes, just like I wanna master your mom.

@RоryMcCune Honestly, I'm not a fan of Rails (and Django).

@TerryChia What don't you like about django?

@Simon lose

@Simon I don't like monolithic frameworks.

all I can think of is Django unchained

1:52 PM
@Ohnana and I keep thinking of Rango.

the story of a web framework seeking to reclaim his freedom from unforgiving web devs

@TerryChia Because?

@TerryChia I don't like monolithic your mom.

@TerryChia you more of a flask guy?

@Simon I like flexibility.
^ go on...

1:52 PM
Legit reason.

@TerryChia that makes no sense whatsoever.

@Tinned_Tuna Yup.
And honestly, I'm not a web dev.

what in the world makes you imagine that monolithic prevents flexibility?

@AviD Really? The possibilities are infinite when she's flexible.
wat

@AviD Have you tried using something other than ActiveRecord in Rails?
it's possible but it's a huge PITA.

1:55 PM
ohhh okay now I see what you misunderstood.

I just point blank refuse to use Rails... and I prefer not to use Python.
but if it's about and the job is literally a once-off, or low-value, I'll use Python.

@Tinned_Tuna Well, at least the first half of that sentence is sensible. ;)

haha :-)

I feel all sexy when I'm coding python.

I just don't feel as confident with it as I do other languages. I wouldn't have confidence in its correctness after I'd written it.

1:58 PM
@Tinned_Tuna Well, if you'll never feel confident if you don't code more in python.

@Simon you know they're talking about the language, and not your D, right?

@Tinned_Tuna Correctness is definitely a problem for dynamic languages.

@AviD NO
