@ewwhite mr HFT on a budget?

@JourneymanGeek TomTom actually DOES it..

@ewwhite: Oh? This might explain the barely controlled RAGE.

@ewwhite I will give him credit for choosing a username that serves as fair warning. "Java powered" tells you it's gonna be a pile of shit upfront.

book

Whoops...ran out of space on my Pi
Forgot I imaged the 4 GB card to an 8 GB and haven't expanded it yet...

2:34 PM
@dawud how about reading the wall? :D
@Travis childish, un-stylish, minimalistic, rubbish....

Welp...something screwed up on my Pi...X keeps crashing :(

@NathanC bad sdcard? journal? the usual :)

@MichelZ You got it!

@DennisNolte Didn't like the "Turbo" overclock. Set it to "High" and it booted fine

@NathanC pff, no passive cooling on the cpu?

Bob
2:44 PM
Interesting that the Win10 installer windows look like Aero Basic.

@Bob: its mostly kinda flat

Bob
@JourneymanGeek No, I mean it actually looks exactly like Aero Basic.
Never tried the basic themes in Win8, so maybe it looks like that too.
Hm. Or there isn't one.

@Bob that's the installer... windows itself looks different
the installer looks 1:1 like win 8

Bob
@MichelZ Yea, I know it's the installer. Just odd that it looks more like a W7 theme than anything from 8 onwards.

@Bob the win8 installer looks like win7, too

Bob
2:47 PM
Also interesting that the console uses vector fonts by default.

an: who cares about the installer anyways :D

just a quick one - anyone got a SuSE 11.2 x64 box running anywhere?

Bob
@MichelZ Hey, I have to talk about something while it installs!

@Bob talk about how quick it is

@Bob Oh, damn. That's surprisingly insightful and forward-thinking.

2:55 PM
@DanBig I've resorted to blocking whole /24s that have been sources of spam. I've got 3 blocked now and spam's down to a normal trickle. Notified the operators of those networks, but they seem like the kind of shady places that don't give a f--- until their IPs all get blacklisted by a major service.

Bob
@Chopper3 ...best I can do is openSUSE 12.2 running on an old netbook.

@Bob any idea what version of the telnet client is on it please?

@MichelZ it wasn't quick for me ;p

Bob
@Chopper3 I don't think it has telnet installed

@Bob the VMWare vCenter Appliance has not telnet and one of my guys is struggling to prove to our FW team that a port is down and we'd normally just telnet to the port but it's not installed

Bob
2:57 PM
Hm. It's been 362 days since I last booted it too.

I remember when I got a copy of SuSe 6 (a boxed kit) way back when. Those were the days, when "free" software cost $50.

@Bob ah, that would explain it then - is telnet-1.2-134.22.x86_64.rpm listed ?

@ChrisS Personally, I prefer these days, when software that costs $50 can be obtained for free with trivial amounts of effort. :)

@Bob don't worry, I may have found a way around it!

Gotta ask, what's your favorite Torrent Client?

Bob
3:00 PM
@Chopper3 Nope. No packages with telnet in the name.

@Bob ok, thank you
@ChrisS Vuse

Bob
@Chopper3 Wait, by listed do you mean installed or available?

@Bob suppose I meant avail but don't worry

@ChrisS utorrent, though I prefer to avoid torrenting wherever possible. So it's my favorite, but I basically just found one that wasn't total shit a few years ago, and still use it.

@Bob thank you for looking

3:01 PM
There's gotta be much better clients out there by now.

@HopelessN00b Ah, I used to use uTorrent. I've found Tixati to be much less sh*t. I use it quite a bit for quasi-legal and completely legal stuff.

eheh.
I use rtorrent + rutorrent these days
Its fast but not very fine grained, and a bit of work to setup
(also, I have issues getting it to work on fedora)

Isn't rtorrent a CLI program?

Good to know. Next time I have to reboot my PC, I'll look into those, and might switch over.

I think I might have used it a million years ago....

3:03 PM
yup. rutorrent is a webui for it
before that I was running qbitorrent, which is pretty good if you want a gui
VERY good protocol support
however, the webui dosen't do RSS

@ChrisS What legal/quasi-legal stuff do you use bittorrent for? If I had a legal or quasi-legal reason to torrent, I probably would.

@HopelessN00b: downloading distros, naturally

Bob
Hm. Win10 is missing a local account option...

I ran rtorrent a while back, then ctorrent (with CTCS for webgui), then Transmission, then I got tired of trying to force a *nix torrent client to work and just stick to Tixati in Windows now.

@Bob: er, I got it working at install time

Bob
3:05 PM
oh, have to go to account creation first
A hint is required? fuck off.

@JourneymanGeek Well, of course, but that's not really a frequent or broad enough reason to have a torrent client running 24/7. Not for me anyway.

Bob
If I can't remember my password I'll just reset the damn thing.

@Bob "Don't forget your password" is what I use as my mandatory password hint.

@Bob: My hint is "THE PASSWORD YOU DOLT"

I always put "Nice try, NSA!" in the hints

Bob
3:08 PM
ok, let's hope VMware Tools works

am I being thick here? I've downloaded the technical preview ISO like 5 times now, but I can't mount it or copy it anywhere

but I can't mount it I hate that problem. Maybe you need more traction... or leverage.

Bob
@pauska uh.. how are you downloading it?

Bob
I had zero issues.

3:09 PM
@pauska: I had zero issues with both versions

@Bob the only way to download it, the stupid akamai netsession thingy

Bob
Cool, Tools installed nicely. Far better than any Linux guests.
@pauska ...???

@pauska: er

tried both through IE and Chrome

Bob
I... just clicked the ISO download link. In Firefox.

3:09 PM
try that
64 bit, right?
hm, that's british english

@pauska See the star wall.

Bob
Oh, right. Enterprise version.
Hm... what's different about the Enterprise preview anyway?

I need to try a VHD boot later

@MichaelHampton ahh thanks

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm waiting for consumer preview before doing that.

3:12 PM
I need the server as well :(
this is how I'm downloading it now..

Is the preview server version out yet?

yes

@HopelessN00b The legal stuff is mostly OSS. The quasi might be something like the international Code Council's Construction Code. It's copyrighted, but it's also adopted as law in the US (and therefor cannot be copyrighted), but they still claim copyright... I'd rather not find out how much it costs to win a copyright lawsuit, but I'm not too worried about them chasing me down either.
@pauska That system f---ing sucks.

ah it's on msdn.. fuck this downloader

@MichaelHampton Yes, MSDN has both the Consumer and Enterprise Win10 Previews, and the Standard, Datacenter and Hyper-V Server previews.

@pauska MSDN has it as well
ah
you've already seen it by now :)

@MichaelHampton Ugh, I can't put enough alcohol in my body to be ready for Windows 10 server.
Good thing I don't work on Windows anymore! (Except for moonlighting work)
@MichelZ Nerd.

@Wesley sucker. TO BED!

@MichelZ Shut it, I woke up an hour ago.

@Wesley ah yeah, it's morning over there.

3:31 PM
@MichaelHampton Thanks, I didn't spot the Server ISOs first time around.

@jscott MS wants you to use their download application, they don't provide those links directly. But as @pauska found out, the downloader sucks donkey balls.

@ChrisS Yeah, I got the Desktop ISO yesterday, if you click "cant install" on the downloader thing and then go through the registration steps a second time, they give you the "real" link.

Once you go through some rigmarole to tell it to NOT use the downloader, it ought to start giving you ISO links for everything else.

@jscott Ah, I've got the downloader, when you click to download it tells you the file name, append to URL and you've got all the links....

the downloader worked for me

Bob
3:37 PM
@ChrisS ...I got a nice list of direct download links?

@Wesley Frankly, I can't wait. Windows 10 Server has to be easier to work with than Server 2012 R2 is.

@Bob 'murica... what can I say?
I've got less problems with Server 2012 R2 than the previous couple...

Bob
That's what "install technical preview" took me to.
haven't tried Enterprise or Server yet though

@Bob yes, it does for the client. not for the server/enterprise

Bob
ah

3:43 PM
@Bob Oh, yeah, for the Consumer Preview they just give ISO links. It's all the other versions

3:55 PM
WordPress DMCA Hall of Shame: transparency.automattic.com/hall-of-shame

4:18 PM
heh.. the preview has a diagnostic tracking service installed
it can't start because of access denied

:)

Bob
Well, that's enough playing around for one night.

Dan
So thats why it's called Windows 10

kce
What up?

4:33 PM
sup
@Dan lol

kce
Its cold out. Going to be snow in a few weeks.

Compiling lightspark on my Pi...taking ages

Compiling on a raspberry Pi?
That is piceless.

@Hennes No, this is priceless
0
A: How to update solaris 10 to be safe from shellshock bug?

TammyDoes anyone have the patch number for Solaris 8...I have it for 10 and it works, just need the number for 8

Dan
@Hennes How else would you compile for it?

4:43 PM
Crosscompile ?

S8 was last updated just over a decade ago

@Iain so its pretty new in case of OS/2 :)

are there still solaris users out there?

I know a few

Bob
@Dan Huh. That actually makes a lot of sense.
...annnnnd they're all dumbfucks who don't know how to do OS detection properly
why am I not surprised that it's Java

kce
4:51 PM
Has anyone used VMware VSAN or MS' Storage Spaces yet in the place of a standalone SAN?

I've only played around with storage spaces

kce
It is an interesting concept - I'm curious to see how it'd hold up in production.

@Hennes Compiling on an ARM virtual machine...

Why on an ARM VM?
Why not compilie on a Xeon with ARM as target ?

@Hennes Mock can't handle cross-compilation.

Bob
4:57 PM
@MichaelHampton Compiling on MIPS?

@Bob Eh?

Bob
@MichaelHampton As an "even worse" thing

I may be crazy, but I'm not THAT crazy!

Bob
Then there's always compiling on that ARM-emulated-on-AVR. It'll be done around the same time humans die out. Maybe.

The worst part of being 6'3" is that your crotch is right at count-top height, so if you splash while washing your hands it looks like you pissed yourself.

kce
5:12 PM
@ChrisS So it is that hard to tower over us hobbits huh?

Yes, it is

kce
Huh. I see.

Can't concentrate.
Death metal to the rescue! Today's choice: Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting
You're welcome.

@ChrisS #TallPeopleProblems

6'3'' is tall?
Google claims that that is 190.5 centimetres.
Not short, but not exceptional either.

kce
5:18 PM
@Wesley Death Metal eh? Do you listen to Gojira?

@Hennes Depends on the region.

I wonder how many US media outlets ran this case..
I'm guessing close to 0.1%

@kce Heard of that band, but not really sunk into them. I'll queue it on Spotify!

kce
@Wesley Really very, very good.

Ah, it seems I am biased:
Statistically, the tallest people in the world, as measured by country are the Dutch. The average height for all adults for the Netherlands is 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m).

5:21 PM
@Hennes Tall, yes. Exceptional, no. 8% of the people I work with are taller than me.

kce
Hmm. I am apparently 3.5" shorter than the average U.S. male.

12 people and one who is taller?

kce
Interestingly enough, height is correlated with professional success even when it confers no physical advantages.

The MSDN and Technet versions of the Win10 preview are slightly different. Not sure how exactly, just looking at a binary diff summary.

Wow!
I just saw Ciso's packet tracer app for the first time.
Damn, that thing is sleek

5:35 PM
sup

kce
@cole Wake up from your cube nap?

@kce lolz
as you said that, that guy actually just came and asked me a question.

kce
He's my new hero in life.
Was he all, @cole, "Can you get me a glass of milk? I can't seem to go back to sleep."

lolz

Getting flash to work properly on the Pi has eaten up most of my day...i'm about done trying, lol
I got it "mostly" working, but lightspark doesn't like certain elements...

5:41 PM
@kce Cube naps are awesome. I wish we had a culture of siestas in the US

kce
So we have municipal election coming up... the last municipal election the voter turnout was... 14%.

Actually, you can do whatever the eff you want where I work. So yeah, I've buggered off at 2 or 3 to nap for an hour or so if I had a bad night.

kce
@Wesley Yeah. Mid-day break and meal. Sounds good to me. I work through lunch more often than not.

Heh, so one of our clients was complaining about slow access to our sales portal. Turns out, it was their Barracuda web filter...

Also found this gem today

5:43 PM
@cole Heh. In our ERP system there's the ability to edit invoiced orders. The title is "History will be altered (Wow!)"

I totally just typed $ sudo chown 666 sosreport-proddb03-814358-568604.tar.bz2

mornin' all

sup @Magellan

kce
@Magellan How's the brewery going?

@kce research phase right now.

5:50 PM
@Magellan research==drinking?

@freiheit no drinking, today at least. caught a nasty cold from the HR girls at the office. They never use their sick days and get everyone else sick.

kce
@Magellan Ugh. Being sick sucks. Sorry to hear that.

Bleh, compile failed again. Looks like I'm giving up on flash >_>

6:10 PM
@kce Well, depends on the specifics. I've contracted a cold or two from an HR chick that I was happy to have.

kce
@HopelessN00b Herpes. The cold that keeps on giving.

@Magellan I hate that. Seriously, burn a sick day

@HopelessN00b LOL, Nope. All the ones there that are worth spending any time with are married. The rest of parasites. And this homey don't mess around anyway.

Heh, mail server caught a couple .wmv files in its content filter (filtering out certain extensions). I'll give you one guess on what the content was...

@NathanC Porn!

6:15 PM
@NathanC a documentary on the life of Steve Irwin

@84104 Cookie for you

@RyJones waiting for a callback from F5 Support for their hourly AWS LTM instances.
As much as I love F5, their AWS offering seems pretty half-baked.

I've got nothing against married women. Just so long as they're not married to me. And HIV is the cold that keeps on giving, for the record.

Data point: Babies think armpit hair is a convenient place to hold onto you when you're carrying them around.
2

@Magellan I'm hating them today. 11.5 has a bug where it's leaking file descriptors, leading to reboots

6:20 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker joy of joys. At least you don't have to worry about the AWS ones. The basic setup UI is busted such that you can't set the password to anything but the default and still have it proceed to the next screen at login.
at least in our region. F5 things that the AMI for our region is broken....
And, of course, their solution is to try it in another region....

kce
If you were going to be buying switches for a SMB SAN (EqualLogic) and weren't using Dell switches which vendor would you go with?
Brocade? I'd generally go Cisco Nexus but waaayy out of the SMB budget.

@kce Gojira. Any album in specific to start with?
looks like only three to choose from, live and special releases aside.
Cranking "The Link"

kce
@Wesley I like their latest album L'Enfant Sauvage which is a little more experimental.

kicks rc.local WHY YOU NO RUN!?
._.

@Magellan I hate F5. Ask me next time at Lee's why I hate them.

6:32 PM
@RyJones will do. I like the products overall, but their edge-case bugs seem to have awfully large "edges".

@kce cisco smb

kce
@MichelZ Does Cisco even have SMB line?
Other than Linksys?
Hmm. Looks like the do.
I dunno, BossMan does not like Cisco so I'll probably have to find something else.

I like them
even 10 gbit gets affordable
SG500XG-8F8T

Switch - managed - 8x 10G-Base-T + 8 SFP+ slots - rack-mountable

kce
Seems pretty reasonably priced.

got 2 of them currently
SG500X-24

Switch - L3 - managed - 24 x 10/100/1000 + 4 x 10 Gigabit SFP+ - rack-mountable
and 2 of the SG500XG-8F8T on the way

6:40 PM
@kce ProCurve...

kce
@ChrisS Yeah. I like ProCurve but it's not on the approved list.

O_o

@kce procurve, juniper, arista

kce
Uh... how can I say this. Our leadership has biases about brands.

windows heads: can hyper-v guests pxeboot?

kce
6:42 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker. Yes.
Although you might need to use the legacy network adapter.

Yes. A "Gen 1" machine has to use the Legacy Network Adapter to PXE Boot. A "Gen 2" can PXE off the Hyper-V Bus NIC.

@kce @ChrisS thanks. That'll save $coworker quite some headache.

The "BIOS" option does say "Boot from Legacy Network adapter", so it shouldn't be too mysterious
I think all the previous version of Hyper-V called it a Legacy Network Adapter by default too (the name shown in the configuration is set in the XML file, so you can name it the "My Little Pony Adapter" if you want, but the name also caries forward when you migrate a VM from an older machine to a newer host)

@kce I see doge. DOGEMETAL. SO GORE. SUCH BLASTBEAT. KILL.
2

^^ no photoshopping ^^

7:02 PM
@ChrisS your hardware is... different :)

good afternoon, kids

SKREE

@EEAA hello mama
uuuh, 3x ninja-star

@ChrisS So what, precisely, does the My Little Pony Adapter do?
8

@Magellan Sorry, just a normal NIC.

7:14 PM
@Magellan adapt little ponys to little packets?

Also, very disappointed that the VM doesn't know the name of it's NIC.

@ChrisS That's rather disappointing. I think you can do better.

@ChrisS might work on windows?

@MichelZ Nope

so many years ago, I used duplicity to back up a few ad-hoc *nix machines to S3. Are there any other similar options I should be considering for some new systems?

7:27 PM
@Magellan indeed. Lots of edges

SHUT UP AND GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY!!!!

@MichelZ No, that's Oracle.

but.. but.... CLOUD!
2

7:57 PM
Even Oracle thinks the "cloud" is stupid.

Oracle announced that they are the worlds largest cloud provider

Doesn't mean they don't think it's stupid.

@ChrisS Then why did they put "c is for cloud" at the end of their Oracle DB versions lately?

oracle just thinks it's stupid because their products don't run there ;)

@freiheit Customers want it, Oracle wants customers' money....

7:59 PM
@ChrisS Fuck oracle

Meh...

Muh

1 hour later…
9:14 PM
Texas is fucking hot.
@Wesley ^ you asked.

9:26 PM
@ewwhite So I am trying to free up a large chunk of budget and was toying with the idea of buying two ASA5520's on eBay for $1,000 each and putting them in Active/Standby HA. What I wanted to do was to get two 5505's but Cisco won't sell them to me and they want me to buy a 5512-X at almost 10x the price
On paper it sounds like a dumb idea, but in practice there's sitll an awful lot of the previous gen ASA's still in production. You still run a 5510 don't you?

9:49 PM
@mossy You acclimatize.
Also, @kce. GOJIRA!!
@MichelZ BUTT... BUTT... CLOUD!

@MarkHenderson I use a 5510... and will be decommissioning a client's 5510
I have no qualms about using them
UNLESS I'm on a gigabit internet connextion

@ewwhite Nope, 50Mb
And the only reason for 5520 over 5510 was the 5520 base license comes with HA I believe
And the price difference in units was like $100
In fact there are plenty of 5540's floating around for around $1500

10:53 PM
Idiots.

@Magellan in general, or specific?

@MarkHenderson buy them up... it's still a good platform

@RyJones Specific. I buy my dress shirts from Etsy, specifically vintage Brooks Brothers. It's my one hipster vice.
Some dumbshit insists that a shirt that was made in China by Brooks Brothers is from the 1970s.

@Magellan I don't judge, sir, you needn't justify your tastes

@ewwhite That's what I wanted to hear ;)

10:56 PM
@RyJones I think you have to have at least one hipster vice or they kick you out of this city.

@Magellan I paid a lot to get my facial topiary trimmed yesterday. I think that's a vice. I enjoyed the hour long face massage that came along with it.

@RyJones Yep. That qualifies. I'm also trying to talk my wife into letting me grow a 'stache again.

@RyJones I only pay about $15 for the facial topiary trimming...

@freiheit There's a place downtown where it's about $40 but the (quite excellent) barber is smoking hot party girl who wears 4" stilettos.

@Magellan Totally worth paying double, huh? ;)

10:59 PM
sup

@freiheit yeah. And the museum's worth of vintage shaving stuff is cool too.
