"Getting your apps ready" .... snore

@MichaelHampton You use Linux, right?

@ewwhite No, I just play a Linux user on TV.

@MichaelHampton does that pay well?

"It's a UNIX system, I know this!"

@MichaelHampton If you were going to rebuild a database server from EL5 to EL6 for some company tonight, and had to choose a filesystem for the MySQL drives, what would your choice be?

12:12 AM
@ewwhite How big?

How big is the database?

785GB Fusion-io

@ewwhite You know a lot more about the performance of various filesystems on those things than I do.

I would use XFS
partially because I've tuned it...
partially because RHEL endorses it now

@ewwhite Then...XFS?

12:14 AM
but I don't want to be too bossy
it's my suggestion, but I think I'm overruled.

@ewwhite fat16

nuh uh
I was thinking ReiserFS
wife killing isn't funny :(

Fuck ReiserFS. In 2005 it killed my files.

@MichaelHampton That was just a practice run for the real thing

hm, vmware player's unity mode sort of works

12:23 AM
Am I the only person who really hates (VMware) Unity?

@MichaelHampton the game engine? yes. vmware unity? no.

@MichaelHampton I've never used it until now
Just curious what it did (I had an idea, but...)

Bob
@MichaelHampton I actually rather like it.
Works pretty well. Far better than what VirtualBox does.

Oh, I guess it's nice if you're the sort who likes to mix your broccoli in with your cheesecake.

@MichaelHampton I use it at home
I do not use it at work

Bob
12:24 AM
@MichaelHampton Eh, it's a quick way to run a Linux program on Windows. Kinda-maybe.

Hmm...
The Express install said it would automatically upload files to OneDrive, but I went to PC settings and it's off.

Bob
@MarkHenderson Hm. I wonder what it could be used for at work. Can't really think of anything.

@Bob We run OSX and Windows on the same hardware
But I find myself tending to sepnd all my time in either OSX or Windows
But at home, I mix OSX and Windows together to do things
Or sometimes I mix multiple Windwos installations together

TIL: Email spam was named after a Monty Python skit.

@MarkHenderson I found running games on the nicest GPU Apple sells in a MBP under OS X got me 20-30 fps, same hardware under Windows 8 got me 300+

12:30 AM
@RyJones Damn

@MarkHenderson yup. I returned it and bought an Alienware desktop. If I'm running Windows 8, it will be on a wintendo

@RyJones But it's shiny!

@NathanC no touch screen.

@RyJones But.... SHINY!!!
:o

I bought this and it comes with LEDs in the case you can control the color of

12:35 AM
lol
nice!
hm. I have a love hate relationship with new things.

@RyJones the single most important performance feature of any PC
@JourneymanGeek My love/hate relationship with new things is that after you get them they are invariably not quite as exciting as you had hoped

@MarkHenderson: I'd settle for being able to turn them off

I remember when I got my new car, and I was driving it home and I thought "Well, this is nice... but now what?"

@MarkHenderson: Oh, my issue is being risk averse with stuff that works

@JourneymanGeek Thats why my home PC is still from 2009
It fuckin works

12:39 AM
so I'll just spin up a VM, I mainly need to get my head around btrfs snapshots. Which in turn interests me cause I want to set up bridging on fedora for KVM

12:56 AM
IT upgraded git server from 1.7.xxx to 1.8.xxx and it broke. Of course, they did it after hours the day the one guy who really knows how that server works is out of town.

naturally

well, we rolled back, so now things will crash every ten minutes overnight, but at least it will be available

1:17 AM
hm. Turns out there's an easier way to do a bridged vm.

@MarkHenderson Heh, I was that way after Windows 10 finished installing...I was like "okay, cool. Now...what do I do?"
if it wasn't so tech preview I'd just be like #yolo and install it on my home PC...and keep all my stuff on an external drive

lol
@NathanC: I'm tempted to try VHD booting it

Whatever happened to animated cursors?

I couldn't get virtualbox to work...but vmware player worked fine

I remember when they were introduced and they were great, cos you could watch the hourglass fill up and flip around
Now it's all boring static sprites
Sorry I should have said "Animated Hourglasses"

2:14 AM
Philosophical question that is definitely off-topic on the site: Are people in favor of a bunch of smaller, single-purpose instances in ZE CLOUD or beefier "all-in-one" instances?

@jrg Except for the very smallest deployments, I prefer to keep things separated.

jrg
@MichaelHampton OK. Define small deployment?

@jrg Everything fits neatly into the equivalent of one of Amazon's small or micro instances.

jrg
@MichaelHampton Nope, this is definitely not a small deployment then.

@jrg It also has security implications. For instance, on a web site I admin I have to run the database on a separate instance for PCI compliance.

2:26 AM
Time for some Spaceballs.

jrg
@MichaelHampton DB is off of amazons RDS.

Attempt #1838232 to upgrade to W8

@jrg It counts :)

jrg
I am not a DBA. I am a developer. I can't afford to hire a Ops person yet, so I'm renting amazons. :P

So...if I do the upgrade, my Bitlockerd external drive will still open...right?
I put the "portable" bitlocker on it

2:27 AM
@NathanC Yeah, it should. Though I actually have printed recovery keys for the few Bitlocker drives I have.
They aren't here though...

@MichaelHampton I saved a copy to my google drive just in case...

@NathanC ROFL!

jrg
@NathanC like that's secure...

Dear NSA, here are all my Bitlocker keys.

Meh, it's not like it's absolutely "secure" anyway. It's my backup drive

jrg
2:29 AM
Granted, they probably already had a way in... it was just more difficult.

It auto-unlocks when I boot the computer, so it's not like I'm hiding anything behind it :P
If I really wanted to hide something I'd just use truecrypt...
(dead or not, it's still solid encryption)
Apparently bluetooth software takes longer than most large programs to uninstall...

3:22 AM
Whoah, Windows Server 10 has removed all the stupid tiles/metro from the start menu. ABOUT FUCKING TIME. A server OS should not have a touch interface. At all.

@MarkHenderson I'll let you touch my server.
I'll let you swipe all over it!

@Wesley I would touch your server all night long

@MarkHenderson Oh baby, I've got a power dongle and a maintenance window just for you.

@Wesley Will you go down during the maintenance window?

@MarkHenderson I'll get nagios flapping like a wounded pigeon.

3:30 AM
@Wesley Careful you'll make my phone vibrate so much I won't need you

@MarkHenderson Remind me to return the electric toothbrush I bought you for boxing day.
Boxing day rules:
1) Cut hole in box

@Wesley Put your junk in that box

@MarkHenderson Pour fire ants in that box.

Remember: It's not gay when it's in a 3-way (with lady ga ga in the middle)

DON'T JUDGE ME!
@MarkHenderson It's not gay if it's on the moon.

3:32 AM
I subscribe more to the "It's not gay if the balls don't touch" school of thought

lol kevin beacon
@Wesley remember a few years ago I reserved an August Smart Lock using your home address?

@MarkHenderson Yes

It looks like they might actually ship them soon
So if you receive one, it's probably for me :P

3:49 AM
@MarkHenderson So you're saying I shouldn't have sold it on ebay.
I really did forget about that.
If something like that had come I would have shipped it back or given it away. :D

@Wesley Thats OK I was always planning on reminding you about it when I got a shipping notification
(I havent got one yet, but ther eis a generic notification that they have started fulfilling orders)
Oh stack exchange

@MarkHenderson Upvoted.
UNGHHH I need to get stuff done but I'm sitting on the sofa watching college football

@Wesley good for you

I feel lazy.
Having said that I started doing the timesheet for my moonlighting work in September

A bit more than I thought.

This is the second in a multi-part series where I explore the process of transforming an existing Graylog install into a resilient and scalable multi-site installation. Start here for Part 1. Server Setup At this point we have about 6 months of data in our existing Graylog2 system so I wanted the entire migration to happen without data loss and to be as seamless as possible. @Wesley I think my QNAP might be on the way out

Q: QNAP reboots every 16 hours or so

Mark HendersonI have a QNAP TS-412. It has 4x 4TB WD Red drives in RAID10. The poor thing works pretty hard. Virtually 24/7 it runs at 20-30MB/sec as a backup device from a bunch of office computers and a handful of servers. In the last 2 weeks, seemingly out of nowhere, it has been rebooting every 16 hours ...

@MarkHenderson Sucks. =/
QNAP does have a shell
It's shitty busybox
You can see /var/log/syslog and stuff

@Wesley yeah it has a shell. I dont know if its busybox or not

I think the UI has syslog emitter that you can puke it all out from

I don't have a syslog collector

/mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs
Check there
Look for kmsg

6:02 AM
@Wesley Ohh
Lots of stuff
Now to see if there's anything intersting

Yeah, it's in a weird location.

Man I have no idea if anyt of this shit is critical or not

hm, look for stuff that says SHUTDOWN REBOOT or CRITICAL?

superuser.com/questions/820162/… <-- We're just two cats, talking on the internet.

@JourneymanGeek None of those phrases :(

6:06 AM
hmm

There are loads of hits on "Exception"
But I have no idea if they're critical or not

how do you know its every 16 hours?
can you narrow down the time?

@JourneymanGeek Rough guess
Usually I get a bunch of emails when it reboots

From the machine or from users?

@JourneymanGeek lol from the backup software that is backing up to it
And sometimes from users

6:08 AM
ahh
that should narrow it down somewhat

Yeah this kmsg file does not contain datetime stamps in any format I can uynderstand
<4>[66929.942804]

hm. unix epoch?

Not that I immediately recognise :(

Welcome to QNAP's world. You're just a maggot filled boil on its useless amputation stump from a horrible concrete saw accident involving spiced rum and naked cousins.

Why do I keep buying them? lol
Actually until this they've been pretty good to me

sed or awk can supposedly do this. But I'd go for perl -pi :)

@DennisKaarsemaker Its 15 minutes before home time on a long weekend. I aint busting out any scripting tools.

6:15 AM
I wonder how derogatory against QNAP and weird we can get with meow talk before we get cleaned up.
QNAP literally gave safe harbor to Osama Bin Laden.

@Wesley Meow motherfucker

QNAP beat two puppies to death with a toddler.
QNAP is literally worse than @DennisKaarsemaker
Okay, maybe not that bad.

Shit I just noticed this qnap is rebuilding its array
These drives are almost brand new
And every time it reboots, the rebuild restarts
I think this may be the cuplrit - I bet the rebuild is hitting the same spot in the drives and rebooting

I also remember when the gap between privs was like 3k to 10k with nothing between
And I remember passing 10k and it took me like 18 months of actually trying/caring

Q: How to setup load balancing on 2 stand-alone servers

txmSo here is how our situation looks like. We are hosting several OpenCart Webshops (7) on 1 server. The problem is, when the rush hour hits, all webshops become slow. Currently I'm using a pretty dumb solution which gives a satisfying effect. All heavy databases and files are hosted on another se...

what kind of answer is this guy expecting?

@faker round robin DNS?

He finds the articles about load balancing too complex, and looks to us for a simple answer (there is none)

@Nick always a winner

@Nick wait now, I thought round robin DNS is used for failover? Can it also do load balancing? Wow!!

11:51 AM
@faker a random IP is chosen at each request so yes

man, the frontpage is bad today..

@Nick I'm joking. I don't consider it load balancing at all. Load distribution maybe.

@faker Meh it does its job on settling the network load so I'm calling it load balancing :p
The only socket near my computer has a switch that cuts the power when my PC is shut down... where should I plug in my router now -.-

@Chopper3 strictly speaking, the question is soliciting debate and / or arguments, which is quite the description of the "not constructive" close reason. But as I always found that the entire question closure procedure is a rat shit minefield, I'd be least likely to vote for closure here.

@Iain because folks on the internet are Mother Theresa followers.

@the-wabbit fuck Mother Teresa and how've you been, not seen you in a while

@Iain I'll do that, thanks for your helpful advice.
Doing fine, rather busy at the moment. New projects keep coming in before I am done with the old ones.

and starting new projects is always more interesting than finishing the old ones

And somebody has ordered a reorganization on our department. Again. I feel like being part of a Dilbert cartoon strip.

@Iain "finishing" is a major problem. Except for one field of activity obviously.

@Iain how's the mood on the island currently? You all must be rather relieved after the failed Scots' separation attempt.

@the-wabbit I wasn't consulted, I don't know what the issues were that make some Scottish people want to become a separate country. The worst that would have happened from my POV was that the Tories would be hard to get out of power as Labour rely on Scotts MPs

I have to move a full bookcase out of the way ... oh joy

12:24 PM
@Iain these things often have economic and social repercussions, don't they? It likely would have been worse for the Scottish, but the rest of Great Britain would have gotten a good shaking, too.

@the-wabbit Yes but it really wasn't a big discussion topic outside of Scotland and it really didn't get much air time till it became possible that the yes campaign might win.
In fact I've spoken to you about it more than pretty much anyone else
