@NathanC It's like Single-user mode with serial console on Unix hardware

If you set a Netscreen wide open (allow any any) then it'll still do connection tracking, yes?

Well, it's official, that streaming media place I'm doing work for (Which is really one guy and two contractors, of which I am one), has had their hard paywall put in place for all stations that signed up for the revenue sharing plan, and all stations that are not hard paywalled have a soft-sell fade-in suggestion to pay for the premium account that gives access to recordings and etc. If this doesn't work out and get revenue coming in, I'm gone.

@TheCleaner Nice! Not surprised I'm not the only twitchy one here. (13.4)

Tonight there are a few games that some stations have, but tomorrow night is Friday Night Lights, so that's the first true test.
I only got 7.83 per second - but I'm using a BT mouse so I wonder if that impaired me.

8:13 PM
@Wesley I'm using the apple trackpad, I could get to 7 clicks/second but more than that and it starts registering gestures
STUPID TRACKPAD!

@MikeyB well, I wrote an AutoIT script. There were no rules on the site. :)

@TheCleaner Oh. I did it bareback. Good to know manual still trumps automation sometimes

"Police near the U.S. Capitol opened fire on Thursday on a car being chased by authorities from near the White House, hitting a woman driving the vehicle that also contained a child, an intelligence source told CNN."
TERROR STRIKES AGAIN

@MikeyB well, lemme change the wait timer and see if the site keeps up...one sec.
462 clicks - 15.4 clicks per sec. Best my script can do...so you aren't far off with your crazy twitchiness!

@TheCleaner Meth. It has its benefits.

@RyJones see, and I was hoping for hot pics of Aaron Paul and you had to go and disappoint me with just another axe-murdery sysadmin.

@voretaq7 but that is the axe

@voretaq7 my best friend (before he grew out his hair and beard) looked like a mini-Aaron Paul.

not the one on tv, but the same one from the same company

8:28 PM
@Cole shave your friend and put him in a box :-P
(Aaron Paul was a lot hotter before he grew the beard - but I would still do him.)

My dearest friends
I have come to seek your knowledge

@LucasKauffman We don't know SHIT!
:kicks evidence back under the couch:

fuck fuck fuck I always forget that SCCM defaults to UTC time instead of client local time

@RyJones It came!

@Wesley it did, indeed

8:30 PM
@RyJones hooyoogonnakill?

@Wesley Luis Moncada

I currently have a tool which allows me to elevate my privileges on my local machine. I can run an infinite amount of time but it's quite annoying as it will force log me off every hour. I have the reg key where it allows me to change my demotionDate, but it will not allow me to edit those values, even with my administrative privileges. I also looked at the GPO, but it's not configured to dissalow editing. What can I do?

Pay for it?

nvm
found it

@MichaelHampton I think @LucasKauffman means something like a "You can be admin for XXXX minutes, then I'm reverting you to your regular account"?

8:31 PM
permissions was not set for administrator
@voretaq7 yea
which is a bitch considering it does a force log out
especially when you are doing a file transfer

Ha, ok. That makes a bit more sense.

@LucasKauffman we do the same thing with idle timeouts for our root shells

there I changed it to 2015
should be good

if all you're running is the shell it kicks your ass out after 10 minutes
(which FUCKING SUCKS when you're reading a log file for 9 minutes 30 seconds, then start typing and get booted)

@voretaq7 this kicks you out after the time period, regardless if you are actively working or not
it's a pain

8:34 PM
@LucasKauffman that's... not cool

@voretaq7 that's why I wanted to circumvent policy, giving a tool which gives you local admin for a period but then forces you to log out and run the same stupid tool again is a bit idiotic
plus I love my IT department, they gave me 8 T420s to play with
with activated windows 7
felt like going to a candy shop

cisco's default log buffer of 4096bytes is a bit outdated

I just saw that Sharepoint has its own site now, are we going for ultimate fragmentation?

That's been around for a long time

I guess i tend to stay away from SP questions, so i wasn't aware

8:40 PM
@DanBig I want answersfromguysnamedwesley.stackexchange.com
And then answersfromgirlsnamedwesley.stackexchange.com
I know of at least two female Wesley people.

answersfromwesley.stackexchange.com has a better ring to it I think.

Can we get boobs.stackexchange.com then? At least we wont have to wander far for the NSFW stuff.

@pauska MEMORY IS PRECIOUS!
:P

@DanBig pr0ns.stackexchange.com
And not far off, sexexchange.com
Although I bet that's already taken.
I will exchange three sexes!

@Wesley hows the client hunt going?

8:43 PM
@pauska No one wants my sexes. =(

related, Sandra looks like she may be hot, however that myspace angle makes it tough to tell

oh she does seem to be.

@Wesley :/

@DanBig Sandra is a dude. He knows what's up.

>.>

8:44 PM
<.<

@pauska Just a sec, I'm going all clicky-clicky on a SQL Server 2012 install.

@Wesley SELECT ALL FEATURES!
put the tempdb on the OS disk

Fucking cat decided she needed to knock everything off my desk during my phone screen.

do everything the manly way!
Why do you people have cats

@pauska Yeah there's no option for this little instance. It's going all on the same disk.

8:44 PM
all you do is bitch all day my long
"oh my cat is soo lazy"
"my cat just knocked something over"
jesus, get a dog

It's just a little grungy backend DB server for stuff like management consoles, Anti-virus, etc.

@pauska lower maintenance than a dog and they complain less than children.

@Wesley the SQL gods are crying tears of blood

@pauska and really, it's still better than children.

@Magellan Comparing a cat to children is a little awkward.. you're starting to get into crazy-cat-person territory
MY CATS LOVE ME BECAUSE THEY DON'T TALK BACK

8:46 PM
@pauska Do you have children?

Oh, and it seems that @ewwhite is a dog.

@Magellan no children and no cat
I'm an uncle tho

@pauska So clients, yeah, I've done some pick-up work here and there. One place had their main tech die, and then nothing was written down, so I came in, saw a bunch of crap, and literally took just a few hours to rip all the junk out, and put them on a simple one switch network and magically it all works now. I haven't picked up an consistent, long term clients though. =/

still my two main ones. One in Colorado gives me 20+ hours a month and the streaming media place is so far behind in invoices while they wait for the sports season to pick up and their paywall to be finally implemented...

@pauska See, there you go. If you had both, you'd realize that the children drive you crazy eventually. And it's not such a far step to crazy-cat-person territory.
OTOH:

@Wesley Have you given any more thought about partnering up with someone? A sales dude?

8:48 PM
@Magellan When you get your new job settled, can you see if they need a jr forklift driver?
2

@Wesley Absolutely.

uuuuuh

@pauska I think at this point it's going to be a matter of me just leaving my business and working for someone else. I felt a bit guilty leaving two places high and dry, so I've kept on, but now that they're getting to a better place I think I could do it.
@pauska I suck at life.

@Wesley or .. what do you call it, bootleg it? moonleg? I can't remember the term
what edmund does - full time job and personal clients

Moonlighting?

8:50 PM
yes, that would be the one

@pauska Moonlight. Yeah, I'll keep my Colorado office around. They're a nice little bonus that I could easily do on top of a FTJ.
@pauska I had some interest from other places in the last few months, but nothing has really come through. Everyone wants guru.com prices.
We want a total migration of all our services up into the cloud so we can quintuple our current traffic and scale out sideways up down left right and we need it done in two weeks and what's this bullshit about more than $20 an hour?!

@Wesley rates in AZ ain't high, right? Can you land a senior position?

@pauska I don't keep myself limited to AZ for my consulting, and in fact only one place here locally has used me. However, yes, for actual jobs this city seems to be the lowest paying city compared to the top 25 most populous cities in the US, of which Phoenix is a top 10.

Tried talking to a recruiter? Mark got in that way

@pauska Yeah, I've had a recruiter here in town who is actually halfway decent, and she's got me into several places to interview. They never went anywhere. The biggest pay I could find was 65k to be a consultant that would have been running about 50 hours a week all over town handling Windows based networks and installations of your standard AD, SCOM, Hyper-V, etc. etc.
So big responsibility and yet they said I didn't know enough to be paid the listed 75k. But they'd give me the same title and start me ten grand lower.
I don't care about the money so much, but I felt a bit insulted.

8:57 PM
Doing System Center work these days is not a bad career choice..

"We'll give you the same title and same responsibilities, but you'll get paid way less than everyone else in the same consulting slot."
Not how I work.
I had some other places that seemed good, but once they say "Great! The network is yours, you're where the buck stops, tier 3/4, and the CEO wants you to handle his home theater... We'll pay you 55k." I felt like I could do better if I kept chasing down places on my own as a consultant. So far though that hasn't panned out.
Sp perhaps it was a poor choice.

one-man-army-consultant is a difficult thing, especially when it comes to pay
You really have to excel at something.. something they just can't just live without
I think that's the key to edmund, those nutty produce places need him to keep those weird apps running

Those of you who can watch programs on bbc iplayer should take a look at Pain, Pus and Poison

9:15 PM
@Wesley Unless there's an Amazon or MS in town driving the prices up, 50-60k isn't all that bad.

@Magellan Most top 25 cites when i glassdoor'd them and also just talking to others, that's way, way below the job description
(top 25 by population)
So it brought up issues of "You people have no idea what you're asking for."

9:31 PM
@Wesley Well, yes. Of course, half the positions I've interviewed for since last March are still open. They really do want someone who can do absolutely everything from the moment they walk in the door.

Some dipwad didn't sanitize imgur's input: imgur.com/gallery/DmZxiRc
@Magellan How much certification do you need to drive a forklift? =)

@Wesley Differs from state to state.

A: Proper way to switch users in sudoers

Danila LadnerBoth commands will give you same result, but they are different: In the case of "sudo -u user2 -i" you will get complete initial environment of that "user2", like an initial logged in state of that another user. In the case of "sudo su - user2" you will get environment variables of the user1 pr...

Strange damn cat grooms herself in her sleep.

Aaaand my lovely Colorado office has some stuff running on its own for the next hour and it's 3PM ish so you know what that means. Weightlifting! #DELTOIDS #BROTASTIC #GYMOPS
toodles

9:37 PM
Is there anything else you could add? I really think whoever uses "sudo su -" is silly

@DanilaLadner I do it a lot. =P

heyas

tune2fs -l $(grep " / " /proc/mounts | grep -v rootfs | cut -f 1 -d " ") | grep created
I win.

@DanilaLadner I do it almost exclusively, because it maps to the standard unix behavior of "become root, su to other user"

rm -rf / var/www/oldsite

9:47 PM
And sudo -i -u user doesn't?

I win!

FORMAT C:

@MattBear Congrats.

FFS, just saw a job description where the only requirement other than knowing how to install hardware in a 19" rack is that you have a degree in something from somewhere.

just got my imaging server working right :D
getting the right drivers into the winPE image was a pain

9:48 PM
@MichaelHampton it does functionally, but remember I come from The Land Before sudo

@Magellan Does it matter that much? (Yes, I'm still here. Got one unexpected call, and then forgot that I've got to call another place at 3 sharp)

I remember back when sudo was not recommended because it had a new security hole coming up every week

@voretaq7 sudon't!

@voretaq7 why sudo? just root!

@Wesley It shouldn't. But if 'degree' doesn't show up on the resume', I bet HR is just tossing them out.

9:50 PM
@Magellan People are dumb.

@MattBear You say that like it's a joke - I worked in environments where the admin team had two accounts in NIS - one regular, and one with UID 0...

@voretaq7 eh

@Wesley Yes, and getting lazier.

@Wesley people aren't dumb, we just have a lot of shaved apes dressed like humans pretending to be people

@MattBear "That's not the WORST possible solution" :-)

9:51 PM
@MattBear Stand still while I throw poop.
3

@MattBear You STUPID, HAIRLESS MONKEY -- "Mister Opposable Thumbs"!

@Wesley You and your poop

@Wesley I'll hide behind the fan

@MarkHenderson High fiber and protein diet! I could put you in a coma with a well aimed poo-fling.

@Wesley I started lifting again FYI

9:53 PM
@MattBear Very nice!

@Wesley and I just found out I need shoulder surgery

@Wesley Hah I bet you get the fabled and nigh-impossible clean poop

:(

@MattBear Ouch! What did you do?
@MarkHenderson I'm no stranger to it.
@MarkHenderson I also get the mythical "That ain't gonna go down by itself" moments.

@Wesley well... x-rays say there's pitting and irregularities on a surface or something like that

9:55 PM
@MattBear So wait, this is a bone issue?

im assuming its from years of a few hundred pushups a day
@Wesley yeah

@MattBear Huh, that seems an odd side effect.

@Wesley Floaters

I also smashed it up pretty good when I crashed my bike racing

@MattBear Doofus.

9:56 PM
makes sense, cause I've been having trouble with the bench press ever since
used to hit like 330 or so

@MattBear Yikes - so is there anything scheduled?

now my best is like 220
@Wesley I'll find out tomorrow

@MattBear Tell them you want the Robocop arm.

@voretaq7 I've been joking about that for years, with my knee lol
the doc told me 5 years ago if I kept going the way I was, I was gonna need replacement parts at 30...
(in regards to my knee)
im gonna be the 3 million dollar man
one leg and one shoulder

@MattBear And your wife will screech at you about her wanting a new knee and her old one is garbage and why do you get new stuff and I want a new knee!
Okay 3 PM call - let's do this.

10:02 PM
@Wesley yuuup!
now well my image is building... start on a WSUS server

did you go for MDT?

@pauska yuup

good boy!

been tinkering with it for a couple days, got it up and running

I know some tricks with it that you probably would want to know

10:04 PM
WinPE drivers were the only real pain
was a great guide

Really? We're using MDT 2012 which utilizes the PE from Windows 8, and we didn't need to add a single driver...

@pauska hmm, I'm using the WinPE from win7, and it didn't have drivers for the HP laptop im testing on
even with the WinPE 4.0 pack from hp

Did you install MDT 2010 D:

nope, 2012
I think it was really a model specific issue

2012 Update 1?

10:06 PM
@pauska yup
it was the storage driver specifically

which WAIK version? It's under components

@pauska 6.1.7600.16385

wat.. weird
we do include the latest intel chipset software in PE however..

like I said, I'm pretty sure it was just this specific model, when I pulled the drivers off the installation media, it worked
but nothing else would, even the updated download from HP

here, let me show you a trick that you'll love me forever for..

10:10 PM
@pauska yes please :)

this is our driver structure:
the trick to it all is to (manually) populate Make and Model under advanced -> database -> make and model
Just install ONE PC from a model, and it'll pop up in "Computers" under Database
copy those make/model values over to make and model
and here comes the magic

the way I was doing it is a folder for make, then a sub folder for model, with the exact name, and then use %make%/%model% to select the drivers

what the hell. just got an email inviting me to come back for another interview at the place I bombed this morning.

@MattBear that's nearly the same thing we do
it works the same
I'm building a screenshot, wait

though I do like the "common" folder

10:14 PM
Is it that much to ask the world that it make at least some semblance of logical sense?

@Magellan Oh honey you must be new here

Welcome to IT. Have some scotch.

@voretaq7 Later. Have to pick up Lady when she's done from work.

you saw in the previous screenshot what common is - all the folders under common is selected in that selection profile, and only install matching from it

@voretaq7 So why, precisely, are you all so damn crazy? I'm just a flatlander, so I don't really get all the crazy stuff you people do.

Prestage is install all drivers - that's important if you want to use it

"Ah crap, the stag film was replaced by a windows internals lecture!"
"Oh no! What will we do?!"
"Gentlemen, we're going to drink until NTFS makes sense." ::raises glass::

We only use it to make sure that all stationary W7 desktops have drivers ready if we need to plug a USB wifi adapter in them

@Magellan The users. The users and their ideas!

10:18 PM
set driver path is important to the next step, as it is marked with a "Nothing" selection profile
the beauty of this is that I can add a driver to some common thing - like a graphics card or a wireless card, without updating 20 different models
as long as you're sure that the new driver doesn't fuck up older models etc..

@voretaq7 This planet doesn't make any sense. Gonna go watch a murder/kidnapping movie.

I've seen other MDT setups where each model has it's own set of drivers, and nothing is shared.. it's a valid way of doing it, especially if you're afraid of breaking older models
I've found this way to suit us much better.. we get a new model in, and I just run MDT on it without even checking if the drivers match or not

@Magellan STOP WATCHING THE DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ME! IT'S NOT FINISHED YET!

@voretaq7 Uh, Pretty sure you're not in Finding Nemo.
Oh. Right. Just updated my indeed.com resume. That's why my phone is buzzing like a lonely girl's toy collection.

proofpoint bought sendmail. I guess intellectual property of sendmail is 5000 perl scripts underneath.

10:24 PM
@MattBear hope this gave you some inspiration :)

@Magellan I'm the dude making sushi off camera
"SSHDs debut on the desktop" <-- um.... of all the funky titles slashdot? Just say "Hybrid disks". My desktop has had an SSH daemon since last century....

win desktop?

@pauska yes it has, thanks :)

After spending 10 days on a cruise w/ no access to the Internet, I think I may have withdrawals! I am SO HAPPY to be back in civilization! (My father said that I would not have liked the '80s... I agree)

@MathiasR.Jessen I remember that post...so funny

10:31 PM
Woah
You can enable dedupe on Win 8 with some dism magic
Definitely going to try this with (and totally break) my 8.1 install as soon as I get my hands on the 2012 R2 RTM cab files.

...@MDMARRA SMASH?!

basically
The good thing about the kernels being the same now is that if the devs don't explicitly put a version check in place, shit like that works.

@pauska I don't suppose I could steal your common driver folders from you :p

@MattBear sure, if you find a way to actually export it..

10:34 PM
@MDMarra: is the overheard low enough for it to be worth it?

@JourneymanGeek There's no overhead. It runs dedupe jobs on a schedule
So during normal operation, there's no overhead

... sweet

It's not like ZFS where there's a dedupe table in RAM

and I can get a copy of 2012 from school

@MDMarra Until dedupe runs, then life sucks! :P

10:35 PM
@voretaq7 Background jobs are capped at 25% of CPU, manual jobs are capped at 50% by default
You can override, of course and make it use 100%
In my testing with 80GB of ISOs it took around 30 minutes to dedupe the first time

@pauska ahh, never mind then, mines imported from a mirrored directory structure so something like that would be easy for me :p

3:1 savings, which isnt bad at all considering they were random isos I had laying around

@MDMarra Bitch, I'm running FIREFOX! I need ALL THE CPU AND RAM I CAN GET!

oh
sorry about that

@MDMarra This rocks.. dedupes on vhd's/iso's on my laptop

10:42 PM
Did you get it working already?

No
sorry, "this will rock"

Haha oh. Ok
im expecting it to be different for 8.1/2012 r2
i was hoping you've sorted it out

Yeah, they'll probably close this hole
No idea why though

We shall see! Just told my boss to download the 2012 R2 RTM ISO for me

@pauska is there a way to keep the images updated with all the current patches?

10:47 PM
@MattBear Windows updates? DISM
@MDMarra can tell you all about that stuff

@pauska ok, one more thing to learn lol

I wouldn't follow that blindly - that will be an enormous package directory..
we don't care about this - we just point MDT to the wsus server and run a update step..

@pauska that's what I was thinking actually

@MattBear so you can use DISM if you have the CAB files for the updates
What I would do once per quarter is install my image, go to windows update but dont install, write down the KB numbers and download the patches directly from the KB
you can get to the files with expand -f on the MSU
Once you have the CABs you can use dism with some commands that I don't remember off the top of my head to add the patches from the CAB files to the offline image so that when it gets installed, they're all there
I'm sure there's a nicer way with SCCM to do this, but I didnt have SCCM when I was responsible for desktop imaging
