6:00 AM
@Ward Dude has some spidery looking toes.
He could open a bottle of Coke with those things.
@Ward How 'bout go all hipster fixie? ebay.com/itm/…
I'M IN LUST: ebay.com/itm/…

thats totally hipster

I don't know what you really look like, but you don't seem like an emo hipster type...

Me looking disgusted while working on a PC.
@Iain and @freiheit - Just got outbid. Don't feel like pushing it up more. Going to keep the slow search. In no rush.

6:15 AM
Sorry, looked away, re-post?

Yeah, PLEASE deleting the cat pictures @WesleyDavid

Simple, boring: ($200)
OMG, you are a cat!

@Ward Meow.
That was a few months ago, whilst agonizing over desktop support work for a small place. I've got to get out of this sector.

And somewhat hipster-ish, so go for a fixie! Is Phoenix flat?

@Ward Most of it, very. Some cinder cones here and there, and a few tiny hills they call mountains bisecting the north from the central, and the south from the central.
@Ward This is taken from a outcropping of rocks a few miles to the south of me called Camel Back. I can see it from my kitchen window. This is pretty much the landscape for all reasonable bike riding under a few hours time:
If they pivoted some degrees, you could see my neighborhood.
Oh wow! This is literally just down the road from me. I can see the glow of the mall lights. I can walk there in like a handful of minutes and shop at the Sprouts in around there
I smell the In-N-Out burger that's in that mall complex.
Makes checking the mail a hazardous affair. You think you'll be 30 seconds, you're gone for 30 minutes while you pound down two or three triple-doubles.
A'ight spunkbusters, time for sleep. Laterz.

2 hours later…
8:05 AM

8:28 AM
@MichaelHampton Ha, he wouldn't let me eat at his fruit stand until I took a picture with him!

Dan
8:39 AM
@r.tanner.f I'm around today if you want to hit me up, mate

8:49 AM
ffs students. If the computer tells you that you need to change your password, do you
a) change your password OR
b) don't change your password and whinge like fuck to everyone about how stuff doesn't work and you don't understand why.

Dan
@RobM B, natch. It's your job to worry about that computer shit

yep
Just remember: this is the generation that supposedly have always grown up with computers therefore will have a natural understanding of them.

Dan
@RobM I don't buy that one bit - people say it all the time, but ultimately while they're probably internet savvy, they're no more technology savvy than any other average person
In better news I passed my motorcycle theory yesterday

@RobM did you mean improve at the start of meta.stackoverflow.com/a/164959/147520 ?

Yes I did, thanks Iain.
@dan on your first point, agree totally. On your second, well done mate :-)

Dan
9:08 AM
@RobM Cheers - loads to do yet, though. And it looks like snow is going to stop play tonight :(

doh

Dan
This weekend even, don't know why I said tonight!

This vCloud stuff is a whole world of hurt...

@Dan It's pretty much snow free here now - roads are clear and dry :)

Dan
@Iain Yeah, somehow the North got away this year. Very little where I am in Cheshire either

It's maybe supposed to snow a bit up north today though.
I tell you what, the roads are clear but its just not clearing at all on paths and greenland here. brrr!

@Dan I think we're kinda sandwiched between loads of snow in North Wales and the Lake District and very little heer

Dan
@RobM Yeah, that's the issue in Wolves. Main roads are completely clear of everything, bu the paths, backstreets and drives are still inches thick
I haven't seen my garden in days

@RobM It's completely clear here ~1 mile from the sea, but go another mile inlad and the fields are still covered

With my garden, that's an improvement. But right enough
Yeah its got to be going some to snow well at the seaside... having said that I remember being stuck in skegness while it snowed massively once. Going for a beachfront walk in cold weather gear and building a snowman right by the sea is properly weird
actually going for a beach walk in cold weather gear isn't that unusual is it? The snow was though

9:18 AM
@RobM 2 years ago on new years day we sent for a walk on the beach,the strand line was ice and the sea had ice in it too - hadn't seen that before

ice in the sea? Yeah that would be unusual... properly weird

No thank you.

@ewwhite what do you mean "wake up"? Given the times you're in chat, surely you never sleep!

I just woke up... after passing out from 16 hours of vCloud work

@RobM: its all part of the plan

9:24 AM
ahhh

@ewwhite ugh, non standard spelling ;p

I woke up, face-buried in a couch pillow, MacBook Pro on the floor, clam-shelled, upside-down, battery dead, Fox News blaring in the background and a half-empty bottle of whisky on the table...
@JourneymanGeek yeah, imagine what that looks like in a Linux ls -l listing

Dan
@ewwhite Fox.....News.

@Dan I think my dog changed the channel

9:28 AM
@ewwhite: there's a 'proper' way to transliterate indian names so people don't mangle them TOO badly

Dan
@ewwhite :D

@JourneymanGeek a lot of my clients here have offshore teams

@ewwhite: with that spelling, its imposible to pronounce it correctly ;p

10:03 AM
@Ward Yes I did, right after an ultrasound, fucking HURT
@ewwhite Fox News!!1!! wft?

@Chopper3 the dog stepped on the remote

@ewwhite Republican dog :)

He wasn't "vetted" properly.

Probably looking for the comic network
cartoon network, even

@chopper3 knows VMware... Am I crazy in thinking vCloud Director is really rough?

10:14 AM
No, it's really not an easy product to deal with at all

but very few seem to really use it because of cost/complexity
I can't tell if it was set up the wrong way, or if it is what it is.
I think it's too abstract... and coming from a lot of VMware installations, I thought I'd be able to understand vCD

Dan
@Chopper3 I like how, for both you and I, that was the biggest red flag from that sentence. Falling asleep with a dead Macbook Pro and a half empty bottle of whisky - that's just standard.

@Dan you say that as if there's a segment of the population where that's not standard?

@ewwhite It was a bought-in product that wasn't designed JUST for vmware, once you know that you can see the 'joins'

Dan
@RobM :D Good point

10:18 AM
@RobM In the US of A, there are many that would object.
@Chopper3 it didn't evolve as a VMware product?

@ewwhite not initially no, I can find out what it was if you like
most of their 'management' tools were bought in then vmw'ified

@ewwhite to the 'fox' maybe. But to the whisky? or the macbook?

@Chopper3 I see it as leveraging resource pools and vShield pretty heavily. Just watching from the vCenter level.
@Chopper3 it would be interesting to know.
@RobM heh... Americans like Fox News!

Who doesn't like a good comedy? I for one prefer the big bang theory or Scrubs when that was on.
Overly extreme left or right wing politicians and the whackjobs that support them are only fit to be laughed at, I say.

@chopper3 was vCloud the wrong choice?

10:26 AM
gah. just spent an hour replacing a laptop screen
oh, and apparently, snow tonight?

so much for no snow and dry roads - everywhere is white now

So today's forecast was right then. doh

@ewwhite no, just not an easy product

@ewwhite it's a bit like vC Operations, very powerful but a sod to setup

10:32 AM
clever

@Chopper3 is there a good resource for training?
because it's just me and another dude running this

10:48 AM
HP Procurve Support are clearly trolling.
Open case
Get told to update switch firmware to latest version available
Do so, still have fault
Report back
Get told "Ah when we said the latest version available on public release, we meant the latest version available on public release from this restricted FTP site we didn't tell you about last time and certainly don't mention in any of our release docs, so you still need to update all your switches firmware."

10:59 AM
oh snap - Katie price got married again but bitched about the resort. Their reply?
“As a gesture of goodwill we are willing to offer her a refund on condition she does not choose our resorts for any future weddings or stays.”

Dan
@tombull89 Bwaha :D

heh

@RobM that's about right

@ewwhite yeah, and it's not like I have a choice if I want their help

Dan
11:19 AM

clever

@tombull89 hi, actually is there any way to make all hardware available to the VM os... yeap i wanna enable webcam, Bluetooth ...

11:57 AM
@MaxMuller To be honest I've never had any luck with USB filters/devices in virtualbox.
Superuser chat may be a better place to ask, or the VirtualBox forums.

I can't speak to any specific platform but if you need support for things like bluetooth, I've always found virtual machines to be a poor substitute for real ones.

12:19 PM
Morning all.
Seems today I have to figure out a way to integrate a bunch of users with our AD, without integrating them with our AD.

o.....kay

So we acquire studio that's using gmail. They need to be on our mailing lists, they need to authenticate against our AD for various internal services, but I have to let them keep their mail system and ensure everything just works...
So I'm going to have to fudge something with AD accounts, empty mailboxes forwarding to separate contact records. Only way I can think of to do it.

Dan
Oops

morning

1:09 PM
@Basil sup
So got the official word, no new computers for the IT staff.

Dan
Oh hey, HP Bulletin needs to download 13189 files.

@Cole What are they running on at the moment? 4 years old hardware, wasn't it?

Any Nagios Core users here?

COnfirmed the disk failure in one of our blades, as well. New disk will be here monday.

Dan
@tombull89 RAID1? No drama!

1:13 PM
@tombull89 almost 5 - Dell Latitude E6400
Core2Duo + 4GB memory - thing crawls.

Yeah - didn't notice until I went into the server room and heard a "tink...tink...tink" and spotted an orage light.

Dan
Ah, yeah, not healthy

Needless to say, after I'm a bit more healed - time to look elsewhere.

Dan
@Cole You can't, you're due over here for the British SF meet

@Dan haha

Dan
1:16 PM
@Cole <- Serious van.

Looking into Atlanta - time for a change. Hate this cold weather. -11C here today

Dan
@Cole Oof, that is chilly. About 0C here

It was -17 yesterday
when I got in my car lol
Yeah, time to move somewhere a bit more warm.

Dan
I hate the winter
Prevents me from being outside working on car stuff etc

@Dan aye. It's going to be 70 in GA tomorrow, like really.

Dan
1:18 PM
@Cole 70C?

@Dan F, it's the US.

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, but @Cole was using celcius

oh yeah.
derp
it's friday.

Ah sorry 70F ~21C

Dan
Toddles off to Google
Ah yeah, 20C much more like it
The problem with the cold is that the same job can be thoroughly enjoyable in the summer but absolutely hell in winter

1:21 PM
I prefer 15ish C
Year round, that would be nice.

At least we're not working as builders. That's not fun in this weather

@RobM right

Dan
@RobM Yep, not my cup of tea

4 days
I woke up at 3AM and puked my brains out
nerves are getting to me now

Ah @Dan had another look at putting CyanogenMod on my phone last night - downloaded everything, back up contacts and files and went to the Sony Ericsson site to get my unlock code...then find my bootloader is locked :/

Dan
1:22 PM
Can't blame you - the only surgery I've had was when I really young
@tombull89 Can you unlock it?

I don't know - there's a lot of misinformation in teh googles.

Dan
Anything on XDA-Developers or do they not cover the phone?

Seems some models are locked.

waiting for something like an op is far worse than when it actually gets there cole
bloody sucks all the waiting tho

@Cole: thats better than the gaming PC I had until recently ;p
and something is odd if its crawling
unless you're running like a dozen 2-3 VMs on it

1:36 PM
I think "If you have to ask..." should be a valid close reason.

It was a balmy -10ºC today when I got in my car. =]

lol
we're back to 27 degrees

15º year round would be too cool I think.

I miss having 24 degree weather :/

@JourneymanGeek Where are you?

1:37 PM
@ChrisS: I'd be very happy with that
Singapore

yeah, low to mid 20s, very nice

so Cisco have sold Linksys to Belkin but will continue a "strategic entanglement".

They've obviously never heard the saying that you don't create a mighty eagle by stapling two turkeys together.
2

@JourneymanGeek As; I keep forgetting that... You're up at the wrong times. =P
Was Linksys not profitable or something??

@Dan If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked. Mine says No.

Dan
@tombull89 Aw :( Sucks

1:39 PM
Rooting an Android?

Well, attempting to put CyanogenMod on it.

Gotcha... That's a major reason I stick with HTC.
I'm surprised nobody else has done the unlock in exchange for warranty thing... Or maybe someone has?

I was considering an HTC Desire but I went for the Arc in the end.
The contract is up in June and I'm tempted towards the Sony Xperia Z.

Sony still makes phones? I thought they bailed?

The Sony Ericsson partnership folded - Ericsson bailed and the Z is the first "Sony" phone.

1:43 PM
OIC

'morning suckers

I'm being moved to the "web developer" office :|

@mossy how quickly are you able to complete your letter of resignation?

what did you do to deserve that? They're like developers that other developers look down on.

I'm... not sure.

1:47 PM
@ChrisS: Considering it, but I'm actually happy with the stock firmware

I liked my stock firmware. I like my hacked firmware much better.
I've changed quite a bit on my phone. On my wife's I haven't changed much, mostly just ripped off the stock apps.

I just want to get rid of the crappy apps you can't uninstall.

oh, that annoys me

I've changed the clock range and scheduler on mine, so it's noticeable faster... wife wants that too, but that'd necessitate a kernel change. My kernel isn't compatible with all the sock apps, so I'd have to find/build a kernel....

since they installed apps for like... indonesian and phillippino telcos

1:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek You're from singapore?
What's that like?
(sorry, that comment just had me looking at the location section of your profile)

One of the stock apps on MetroPCS phones makes it so when you call 611 their MyMetro app pops up instead, and gives you a variety of account options, none of which is "I want to talk to a human being"

@ChrisS Cisco wants to focus on "enterprise" (from what I've read). See also their acquisition and soon after killing of FlipVideo.

@jscott they bought flip for the IP though

@jscott Yeah, I was just reading up on all that... Strange that they didn't just spin off a whole consumer subsidiary.
@MDMarra Any idea what IP?

@ChrisS A bunch of video patents I believe
It must have helped their teleconference line or something
or they must have felt like they needed more protection with all of the patent trolls around

1:55 PM
Interesting... I think I should go into the patent trolling businesses... Patent every aspect of audio/video/networking that I can think of... See what sticks.
We've got a patent troll harassing us right now. They want $1/4 MM for sending e-mail attachments.

I fail to understand how people can patent something that people do all the time, and use stuff exactly how it was supposed to be used.

@MDMarra: boring, in my case ;p

@tombull89 Our patent office is a bunch of paper pushers who very rarely understand what people are trying to patent.. So lots of patents with obvious prior art get through and issued.
