12:00 AM
And it's free

@MDMarra Did you just say dislike? I'm so puking in your slippers.

@voretaq7 we have a few thousand of them, so that's not really a point :)

And you can do cool stuff like DNS delegations if you want
@WesleyDavid yuck

@MDMarra that's all well and good, but that's not what the Win2K AD Class (and associated books) had you do :)

Okay, yeah, IE is crapping itself without the www. I'll have to remember that subdomain bit if I ever convince them to do a rename...

12:01 AM
@voretaq7 Oh fair enough

@MDMarra (which is probably why everybody got it all twisted and fucked up)

Also the fact that SBS shipped with .local as the default suffix didn't make it look like MS knew what they were doing

@MDMarra .fuck

I'm hungry.

Meat Loaf (born Marvin Lee Aday, September 27, 1947), is an American hard rock musician and actor. He is noted for the Bat Out of Hell album trilogy consisting of Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose. Bat Out of Hell has sold more than 43 million copies worldwide. After 35 years, it still sells an estimated 200,000 copies annually and stayed on the charts for over nine years, making it one of the best selling albums of all time. Although he enjoyed success with Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell and earned a...
And now, GoHome Time. :flushes question toilet:

@WesleyDavid LOL

I'm going to write a canonical "What should I name my Active Directory Domain" question

@MDMarra Will you once and for all tell those feckwads off who say "DON'T USE A .COM!!"
@voretaq7 Was it not a tad weird when he was on that Ghost Adventures show in, I think Tennessee? Some concrete factory that killed a bunch of people.

@WesleyDavid yeah
not tonight though
studying for a certification and I also need to do work for @ewwhite at some point
That some point may be tomorrow though at this rate

@MDMarra Schweet.
Warning: Murderous concrete factory at large! Last seen feasting on basalt and downtrodden masses.

12:08 AM
Crappy interview?

@ewwhite meh
sounds like a datacenter ops job
yuck

@MDMarra Y U NO LIKE?!

they said "it's half working with servers, half with vmware"

Depends on the DC role I guess but that sounds fresh to deff.

it sounded like "working with servers" meant physically working with servers
like racking shit
I got the feeling that it was racking shit, installing esxi, lather rinse repeat

12:09 AM
@MDMarra That can be cool - but not every day. I do like getting my hands dirty with cabling and velcro though.
@MDMarra Rackmonkey. Ew.

I don't mind that twice a year

Hmmm... a facilities management business down the road from me needs an administrator...

Is it soulcrushing
Because that's the type of job that you deserve

@MDMarra I'm a ginger cat. Nothing to crush.

gingers have soul. Many souls even, they stole them all.

12:16 AM
Ugh so hungry, wat do I want

@Cole pie!

@DennisKaarsemaker I think I want Chinese

Peking duck?

@MDMarra Not really a duplicate; it's more off topic.

@Cole oriental food. Any kind.

12:19 AM
@mossy my thoughts exactly

:D

@mossy Strangled rat?

@WesleyDavid Cat
That's not real :|

Maybe thai

12:21 AM
@WesleyDavid You're gonna eat some dude's tongue for dinner?

@freiheit If I can get someone to respond to my Craigslist ad, yeah.

Lol

@mossy Less laughing, more eating:

@WesleyDavid Note to self: never respond to any CL ad from WesleyDavid

12:27 AM
Getting thai food
yum yum
spicy pad thai

Good choice.

just fixed an annoying IOS6 and Exchange 2010 Autodiscover issue!

@ewwhite Was it star records in DNS? Or mistyped SRV records? Those are big gotchas.
Or was the MAPI client settings on Exchange set to deny the wrong version range? Also a gotcha sometimes it people get too adventurous.

@WesleyDavid Nope... "Default domain" definition in IIS

@ewwhite IIS. Blah.

12:51 AM
Hmm. Maybe I'll get a VPS and test varnish and nginx this weekend.
What do you think @WesleyDavid.

@mossy I think you'll like them both.

Should I be productive or sleep

@mossy yes

omg so good

@mossy Sleep is for the week.

12:55 AM
@MichaelHampton yes. sleep is for a period of 7 days
I think that's called a coma
maybe?
@mossy what time is it where you are

almost 8pm

@mossy oh well stay up
8PM is nothing
<-probably asleep by 9

2am here

haha.

@DennisKaarsemaker you're a champ

12:57 AM
no, just to lazy to go to bed :)

@DennisKaarsemaker er?

Ok, Varnish it is.

How does that work? lol

@Cole, I'd need to walk up the stairs

should I endorse rackspace and their over priced "cloud servers"

12:59 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker ah then yes I see your problem

Heh, Rackspace cloud is so overpriced I have never used it or sent anyone there.

@mossy depends on how well you like the people you're recommending it too

Howdy, anyone have much experience with rsnapshot?

@MichaelHampton It's fast though.

@Guillochon Nope - just rsync. I do like what I've seen of the concept of rsnapshot, but not used it. =/

1:02 AM
@WesleyDavid I'm just running into some errors

@mossy What, do they have storage on the wings of high-speed angels?

@Gui
=)

@MichaelHampton Something like that

Heh, Azure's fast too, and half the price.

I can ssh into a server, I can rsync to a server, but rsnapshot throws an error

1:03 AM
@Guillochon what's it say?

/opt/local/bin/rsnapshot daily: ERROR: /opt/local/bin/rsync returned 255 while processing root@server.com:/directory
googling reveals little...

@Guillochon hrm

I am connecting to the server via an ssh key, not a password

Does anything copy at all? Just dirs? No dirs?

So it's possible for some reason that through cron that that fails
Nothing

1:07 AM
sorry about that, stupid cat

@Guillochon rsync never exits with 255, so i'ts execve() that returns -1 and rsnapshot using that as exitcode
is rsync on your system really in /opt/local/bin/rsync?

@Guillochon The root users email have anything in it from rsync or another services? /var/log/message?

255 is generally unsuccessful SSH

yes rsync is really there
let me look at the message
I should clarify I'm on OS X
I have no /var/log/message

OS X. -.-

1:10 AM
oh, no professional environment then

I actually think that it's this: /opt/local/bin/rsync -a --delete --numeric-ids --relative --delete-excluded --rsh="/usr/bin/ssh -i /Users/username/.ssh/rsync-key"
that's the problem, for some reason it doesn't use my id_rsa file

@DennisKaarsemaker I think the Apple StackExchange might be helpful? Or the UNIX&Linux SE?

it's using some copy of it?
i'm not even sure how the rsync-key file got there

@WesleyDavid no idea. Stopped caring at the osx :)

@MichaelHampton Should I also switch to vim?

1:11 AM
@mossy Depends on what you're using now.

<3 OS X

@MichaelHampton >.>
<.<

nano.

@MDMarra ME too

Dont tell anyone.

NANO

1:12 AM
@mossy Yes, you should take off the training wheels immediately.

@MDMarra I like it as a desktop OS but don't want to do anything with it outside of the pretty clicky buttons that Apple gives you. Anything deeper and things get... weird. Even for me.
@Guillochon So how did you get rsnapshot onto the machine? What repo or build site?

@MichaelHampton I always end up button mashing and fucking my config files up

fink i believe

@mossy And once you've mastered vim, we'll introduce you to a new operating system: emacs.

actually no, macports

1:13 AM
@Guillochon And this is rsnapshot to a local storage device?
Ack, gotta run

Yeah...actually, I think I've tracked down the problem
It's because rsnapshot uses a custom SSH keypair
I have to copy the public half to my authorized_keys on the server

holy hell I ate too much

Ok. I'm sure i'll return soon frustrated as hell.

nano makes me cry.
I'm a vi/vim guy.
I can edit the fuck out of files now

@MDMarra about to start the Exchange migration at Valley!

1:16 AM
%s/fuck// # edit the fuck out

@DennisKaarsemaker LOL

Alright, that was the problem.

@mossy Setup X11 forwarding and use a GUI editor?

@Zoredache gvim? :)

@Zoredache Nah. I want to learn.
I just complain a lot.

1:20 AM
Sure. Though SciTE is pretty nice.

@ewwhite Just finished dinner. Do you need just GPO stuff tonight?

@MDMarra PST imports... although, I guess I can do those manually.
GPO stuff needs to be done this weekend.

I can give you a hand with them if you want. I'll handle the GPO stuff tonight or tomorrow

@mossy once you learn vi a little bit, you'll never want to use anything else.
I've only ever used vi. At first I was like "this fucking sucks"

@Cole: trying to start a religious war? ;p
/me favours nano and ne

1:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek OUT. OUT WITH YOU

which, I need to remember to install on my new linux partition ;p

Don't do it!

@Cole Yeah, every time I open something in nano I think "Why am I still using this... Learn vi you lazy ass". And then I ctrl+v ctrl+y to where I need to go. Save. done.

Erg I just can't do it
Fucking facial hair = acne city

lol
I just stole my mom's facewash. Some wierd indian brand. Its magical ;p

1:34 AM
It's not a ton, but I've never had acne.

@JourneymanGeek nano fucks up newlines and tab spacing

@MDMarra: really?
I mostly use it to edit config files, never really had an issue with it.

I couldn't figure out why my xinetd.conf wasn't working for like a whole day when I was a n00b
Opening in vi showed that the tabs and wrap were mangled
vi handled it fine

Guess I got lucky with starting out on vi

1:35 AM
Ever since then, haven't been back

Like right now.
WTF is it doing.

I'm so exhausted, haven't slept really in days with the excitement/anxiety.

less tits, more sleep
2

Probably the only time I'd agree with that.

oh this is kind of cool.

1:41 AM
This is nuts. I can make what I make here in MA, in ATL but CoL is SO low.

@Cole Will have to alias nano lol.

time to go lay down, I feel like shit
later

@WesleyDavid I agree completely. I'll use macports to get some other shellish utilities, but that's about it. I'm not insane enough to go installing Amarok of Apache on OSX. There be dragons....

2:20 AM
@ScottPack That's twice you've agreed with me today... suspicious glance <_<
@Guillochon Good man! Now blog about it for posterity? =)
@MDMarra I had a question for you I thought up at dinner, and now I've forgotten it.
Oh, and lookie lookie, we would never have known about the rsnapshot / keypair solution if we hadn't let a little live support in.
YOU ARE A DEBASED, RETREATING, SCUZZMONKEY, @MDMARRA!
Live support 4 EVAH!!!

apache should work. Amarok.. less so ;p

@JourneymanGeek How's school, gangstah?

still trying to catch up ;p
good thing is this term I am doing the same subject (knowledge management) from opposite perspectives ;p

@JourneymanGeek What's your timeline? How many more credits do you need for the big kahuna?
@JourneymanGeek Sounds kewl.

this trimester, then next

2:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Got any work?

not at the moment. Planning on working through the red hat cert guide if I have any free time ;p
I'm planning on getting ahead on my assignments before mid term break
then I would be able to. One module is MOSTLY assignments so it will help ;p

@JourneymanGeek 16 hour days, eh?

@WesleyDavid oh

@MDMarra Something about... something.
Exchange maybe?
Argh.

Exchange hits the global catalog a lot
That's 100% of my Exchange knowledge

2:46 AM
@MDMarra Oh, what if a Server 2012 box running Hyper-V needs to have a VM ported over to a totally unrelated Server 2008 R2 box running Hyper-V?

Again, I am useless to you

Client has a VM at a host, and the host uses 2012 Hyper-V. I want to email them and have them just send me the VMDK / VMDX files etc.

I'm a VMWare guy :)

But the target server is a Server 2008 R2
@MDMarra You make kitty sad.

Sorry man
No live support...

2:47 AM
@MDMarra scuzzmonkey
@ChrisS is somewhat familiar with Hyper-V I hear.

:)
I think Pauska uses it too

@MDMarra Let me tell you about their license restrictions...

Yeah yeah yeah

Hi all

So there's a copper mine that some mining company wants to put here in Arizona.
And I was just on their Facebook page
And saw this comment:
We do NOT need - nor can we "protect" the environment, but we can use conservational methods which most all businessmen, farmers, ranchers, and other resource companies want to do -- to "protect" their interests!!!! This should just not be this hard... It is pure political manuevering to control America.
lawlhuh?

A: How do I deal with the removal/eradication of an unknown worm on our network?

codeslingerThis is in reference to the answer I posted (below) on Jan 5 at 23:57 and the criticisms that follow it. I had expected this post to appear below that one, but it is above it instead. You may want to read that first... or not. With regard to my qualifications and "deep level of knowledge" s...

This....wow. I don't even know what to say. I've read this twice and all that it says is "take infected machines offline and scan the disks with a known good VM." Then it goes into a tirade about Linux vs Windows for home users, which is entirely irrelevant for this audience. — MDMarra 23 secs ago

3:42 AM
@MDMarra How do I configure Windows DNS to register the reverse PTR record for AD hosts
?

You have the reverse zone created already on the DCs?

@MDMarra Clearly we need to make his new post appear below his old one. It's what he would want.
Oh god, I read his profile. I know what his REAL problem is. He's a DEVELOPER pretending to be a sysadmin. He says he likes Ubuntu and VirtualBox, for fuck's sake!

He's also "killed" lots of viruses

And he's never heard of booting from a USB stick, or PXE booting...

Hi, I'm @JoelESalas and I ask a question and then disappear :)
@MichaelHampton Looks like Chris just killed both answers
Which is sad, because now he gets all that rep back

3:54 AM
@MDMarra Yes the zone exists, which I hoped would fix it. I also set the "AD integrated" setting. No dice

Hey, I was reading that! Oh wait, it's just got an ugly pink background now.

@JoelESalas how are your clients registering records?
The default self-register or dhcp dns proxy?

@MDMarra They're all static IP, so I assume the former?

They only register once a day
How long ago did you create the zone?

@MDMarra Couple days ago

3:56 AM
ipconfig /registerdns will force registration

@MDMarra Perfect. Thank you

I mean, you shouldn't have to do that
but it's a good step for troubleshooting

@MDMarra This is an all-new environment, so I'm sure I'm missing some crucial setting. I seem to recall that my hosts would register in (r)DNS after a reboot in the worst of cases

Make sure the setting in the DNS tab of the NIC settings has a check mark to also register reverse lookup records
I think it's default but worth looking at

4:17 AM
@MDMarra How do I configure an NTP time source for an AD controller without editing the registry?

4:37 AM
@JoelESalas hiss... you should know!

shame rays

@JoelESalas w32tim at le commande prompte.
/manualpeerlist or some such
Physical or virtual DC?

@WesleyDavid all virtual mufucka
because I hate myself

@JoelESalas For extra bonus points, join the hypervisor to the domain.

4:51 AM
@MichaelHampton or use the VM as the time source for the hypervisor!

@JoelESalas I'm done with you.
symbolically washes hands

@WesleyDavid Don't have a lot of physical boxes

@JoelESalas Well heck, if you're in Phoenix sometime I might have some you could take off my hands.
...a bit long in the tooth, mind you.

@WesleyDavid A bit? I'm not looking to make a museum

@JoelESalas Dell 1850s/2850s?

5:03 AM
@WesleyDavid They're EOL :(

@JoelESalas Ghetto is as ghetto does.

@ewwhite Do you have a minute to talk HP hardware? $$$$

sure

@ewwhite Mind if I email or IM you?

k
or here is fine.

5:11 AM
@ewwhite I'm working with a company that's looking to spec out an all-new infrastructure. They have a particular need with the DB server, max IOPS/dollar
They have fairly typical requirements. 3-4 decent VM hosts, an Exchange server, and the aforementioned superbeefy DB server.

k

What should I be looking at to get them the most IOPS for just that DB server?
DAS shelf with SSDs in it?

I can do HP Pliant/Sandisk SAS SSD's...

and how is this expressed in HP vocabulary

or just Fusion IO
HP-branded Fusion IO
I'd need capacities.

5:13 AM
@ewwhite 3TB for DB server

3TB of fast storage?

@ewwhite Yep.
At least 1TB of fast storage. the other 2TB can be on magneto-spins if absolutely necessary

Fusion IO or HP's enterprise SLC SSD's

@ewwhite SLC SSDs

Fusion Io will be cheaper
...

5:18 AM
@ewwhite Awesome. Can these be aggregated?

My price is $2k.
not $15k.

@ewwhite How many can be reasonably stuffed into a server

about four in a 2U DL380.
400GB Enterprise SSD's will be $3500 each

This neighborhood is either getting more ghetto or more redneck

@ewwhite I'd like to reach out to you very soon. How should I contact you?

5:20 AM
second time in about two weeks I've heard gunfire

@WesleyDavid They're probably just celebrating someone's birthday

@JoelESalas my profile

@ewwhite Thanks a million.

line my pockets!

6:15 AM
@ewwhite Gladly. Do you bill when you're just talking to a client about implementation?

sometimes.
depends on how much the real project will be

@ewwhite How do you decide?
I see

if I know that any time can just be rolled into the real project.

@ewwhite So you don't bill for chitchat UNLESS it becomes a real project?

people don't like seeing, "Time for discussion project scope"
just take another 15-60 minutes on somewhere

6:17 AM
Excellent.
This last week has been most satisfying. I love building shit.

@MDMarra I had to ZFS snapshot the old Valley file server volume, copy the VMDK to another location, attach the disk to another VM and then replace permissions in order to get access to all of the customer PST files.
