jrg
6:00 PM
it's monty python. never is. ;)

@voretaq7 as in Nobody expects ...

@jrg Aren't you in the wrong chat? :P

@Iain yes

:(

@ewwhite ok

6:02 PM
@MDMarra and all of the rest of the best practices for RDS

I'll have to dig those up from somewhere, tbh. I don't deal with RDS/TS really

jrg
@Jacob Nah. I run a small business network. this is relevant.

@MDMarra it's stuff like disabling screensavers, etc.etc.

@ewwhite Right. I'll look into it and take care of it

@jrg Though, I still hold the title as SFs youngest member when joining :)

6:04 PM
Is it being used in production now, by the way?
Have users migrated to the new file server?

I've done it before, but can't find the guide I used.

jrg
@Jacob heh

@ewwhite Yeah, I'll dig it up

@MDMarra nope and nope... doing an exchange move this eveing

Ah ok. So is this a "go ahead and do it" request?

6:05 PM
yes

Ok. I'll take care of it tonight then

Boss is asking about sending people to PowerShell training classes (not me, but other guys in the group) - anyone know if there's anything worth it out there?
Or tell him to tell them to read a book?

Aww. I missed the fun

@Cole Get-Help

@pauska basically what I said.

@Cole I'm not kidding (so much) either.. get-help with -Full gives you detailed examples
or just use technet

the scripting guy blog on technet has good shit
lots of "this is how it worked in VBS, this is how it works in PS"

@pauska I said, and I quote "I don't know about training, I learn everything through TechNet/blogs and Get-Help"

like I said earlier, I was in a session today with the inventor of powershell
he got asked by one of the people in the audience "what's your most used command in PS?"
he answered "get-help"

That's awesome

6:09 PM
and this is the guy who wrote PS v1.0..

@MDMarra can you give a link to the blog you are saying I usually have learned most of the things from internet

Thanks

Q: What exactly is the very best sort of screen to place my old coins in?

user2011617I have started collecting coins, and I need to understand what exactly is most readily useful for keeping them in good shape.

-_-

@RegisteredUser blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy - google is you friend

6:12 PM
@Cole wtf that's just gone from Off-Topic to spam.

@tombull89 yup

@Iain I get your point I just wanted to be sure that I am on right link

BALEETED!

@voretaq7 in your reply you mentioned some thing about attendent software is it some thing similar to the following google.co.in/… which I searched or I should search some thing else

6:15 PM
@voretaq7 Spammers don't care about the FAQ.

@RegisteredUser I meant accounting software, but you would need a phone system (and possibly a receptionist) too.

@voretaq7 probably needs a bit more than that...

Actually what I am willing to know is slightly different from my original topic

@RegisteredUser You know that you can't just start a "friends and family" ISP, right? You need to buy transit on a backbone. The equipment and licensing costs are literally hundreds of thousands of dollars

see I get your point

6:16 PM
With recurring monthly costs
You can't just pop a router in a datacenter and charge your friends $5

I still want to do my experiment may be it is valuable for me

What experiment is that?

the same thing ISP thing

You, literally, cannot do what you describe, even on a small scale, without hundreds of thousands of dollars

tag teaming spammers are back & destroyed :D

6:17 PM
once a client asked me
he was willing to bill the users of his VPS
based on data usage

...that's not being an ISP

jrg
that's being a colo (well, virtually.)

Now you're talking about reselling services on a server. That's entirely different.

@MDMarra eh, you can get acceptable third or fourth tier transit for about $10k/mo/uplink

@voretaq7 And you need all of the equipment to support that. Plus delivery of said transit to friends/family, etc
It'll easily break 6 figures

6:19 PM
PowerShell for XP is just a Windows Update, right?

@RegisteredUser Hey, I wonder if you could help us if you had a moment? there are a few of us here that are interesting in a voyage to Mars, we're all super-excited about it but other than us having flown a lot we have next to no experience in modern space engineering - is there a site we could go to that would help us make this almost insurmountable knowledge-gap in one jump? we'd be very happy if you could help us, thanks in advance.

I think?

I never knew what exactly he was doing some how that project was not much further but this question is still there in my mind and it struck me know as how will one bill when there is an ISP and want to bill people based on data usage or various plans see there is no lack of enthusiasm as far as business is
concerned I know a guy who made large amount of money just starting an antivirus company and he was simply high school graduate the link is not in English but you can Goolge jagran.com/news/…

@RegisteredUser Creating an application is different than being an ISP

I may be lacking technical skills at this point of time in my life but I am determined to be one irrespective of amount in USD involved in that

6:21 PM
This is the second time you compared starting an ISP to making an application (google was your first comparison)

@Chopper3 Pfft. I've played Kerball Space Program, how hard can it b-oh.

I just wanted to give an example

Anyone can make an app. There is little initial investment. If it does well, you scale up and hire people. If not, you have code for your portfolio

I am least concerned with code

You keep giving examples of developers making things at a young age and comparing it to network engineering

6:21 PM
I wanted to learn linux kernel

@Chopper3 No freezing for you? I was surprised by how much blood there was.

and I learned it best wat

@RegisteredUser And what does Linux have to do with an ISP?

way I refused the job offer from one of the best company
I know if I have made up my mind to start an ISP I will

Is there a mute function here?

6:22 PM
@RegisteredUser You've trolled us before right?

@pauska there's an ignore button

@pauska There's an ignore this user option

@Ward where?!

@pauska "ignore this user (everywhere)" by clicking on that user's icon on the left

ah
thanks

6:23 PM
you should not discourage some one from learning irrespective of the fact he does not have money to start his business this is how real life works people have done great things by learning like this asking questions with their curiosity who knows one day I will hire you people

Is there a functional difference between "ignore this user (everywhere)" and "hide posts"?

Lol @Chopper3

Tell me, @RegisteredUser, how old are you?

does that matter

@jscott interesting question

6:24 PM
@jscott I assume "everywhere" means you wont see them in any chat room. Hide posts seems to only be for the current room

@RegisteredUser I can assure you you will never be able to hire me

@RegisteredUser You can't "learn to start an ISP" in Stack Exchange chat - it's WAY too broad an undertaking.

I m most concerned to know how ISP works and what it takes to be one of them

I just tried "hide" and it also shrunk the gravatar on the right...

@RegisteredUser no, I'm just interested and might be able to give you some advice.

6:25 PM
I need a pointer to start I will learn myself

@Ward ignore does the same

@RegisteredUser You really don't have a clue what you're talking about. You don't know enough about any of this to know that you don't know shit. Really, if you want to learn how ISPs work and get into network engineering, get a job at an existing company as a network engineer. There's a reason that you don't see "startup ISPs" everywhere like you see startup dev companies. Really, this is a site for professionals. If you want professional advice, you just got it from everyone here.
What you're proposing is crazy. End of story. Bye now.

its not the end of story this is how people learn

@Ward Oh, that actually makes more sense.

@RegisteredUser No, you learn by doing, under the guidance and mentorship of those who have done before. We do a lot of teaching here, but no site on the internet can open up your head and pour in all the knowledge required to start and run an ISP.

6:27 PM
@RegisteredUser I'm 23. I've been working in IT for the best part of 4 years. I would likely need at least another decade of expeience before I could even consider working for an ISP as high-level support let alone running one. Take it from me, you are hopelessy out of your depth and it will cost you a lot of time, money, and probably your sanity to do what you want. I wish you all the best, seriously, and good luck. You're going to need it.

Like I said, I did it before - and I had a bunch of other guys working with me, because we all knew that none of us had a complete head of knowledge that would let us run the show, but between the lot of us we could do a decent job of it (and hire people to do what we couldn't)
and with that, Lunch.

I just got here and what is this

This really was my week.. finally fixed the SAN problems, and now I finally managed to fix RPC over HTTP transparent failover for exchange.

@pauska gj

@RyanRies nothing to see here - just move along now

6:30 PM
haha

problem solving is one thing and people need to know how to solve problems and learn things as they come in their way be it business or technology sane people only give results it depends upon how sane one is and I am one of them

@Cole remind me in a few days and I'll send you a link to the powershell crash course session I took today.. it was frigging great and a MAJOR eye-opener for me (I suck at scripting)

It's been an interesting week. First Cheevos, now this...

@pauska thanks!

6:33 PM
@pauska I was like, "Yo, I'm good with PowerShell" and then I look at scripts where people load .net assemblies and all that and I think "Yo, I suck with PowerShell"

What's an ISP?
4

An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides access to the Internet. Access ISPs directly connect clients to the Internet using copper wires, wireless or fiber-optic connections. Hosting ISPs are a kind of colocation centre that leases server space to smaller businesses and other people. Transit ISPs provide large amounts of bandwidth for connecting hosting ISPs to access ISPs. Internet service providers can be either community-owned and non-profit, or privately owned and for-profit. History The Internet started off as a closed network between government re...

@ewwhite The exit is down on the right 3 doors down....

How is ISP formed? How computer get inernet?
3

@ewwhite Think of it like IaaS for your Internet access.

6:34 PM
@MDMarra haha yeah.. that new SX employee runs C# inside PowerShell. I was like "whaaaaaat"

@RegisteredUser It is the end of the story though, you will never start your own homegrown ISP, never - not without millions of investment and if you could get that investment the first thing the investors would do would be to hire professionals who know what they're doing.

Like dial-up?

I can computer!
3

Internet as an IaaS. Hahaha.

@MDMarra If you're interested Carlos Perez has been getting hot and heavy into using PowerShell for penetration testing. His blog posts might be interesting.

6:35 PM
Oh fuck yes

I can internet!

@ScottPack <3 penetration
4

My current company started as an ISP... so by my desk, there's an old-school binder with all of the NOC guidelines for troubleshooting T1, ISDN and dial-up connections.

I was able to remove 6 NT trusts today. CLEAN UP ON AISLE PANTS.

@MDMarra inorite?

6:35 PM
@ScottPack Does he run that PoShSec github repo?
I think that's what it's called

Listen guys, I just want to run a secure Telnet server on my Windows Server 2012 machine. pls halp.

a secure telnet server
right

@pauska think you missed that yesterday

@MDMarra That's a negative.

@Cole yeah I probably did

6:37 PM
@pauska someone asked that, seriously.

@ScottPack Do you know what I'm talking about though? There's a large repo of powershell security related tools

Q: Telnet on Windows Server 2012

Dan FarrallIm looking to implement telnet on Server 2012, i know its not secure yada yada, its just a project. Whats the best security practices regarding this including software to use, if not inbuilt. I'm also putting an SSH server on there if theres anything that can combine the 2. Thanks.

@MDMarra I just looked at it. I hadn't seen it. My only experience with powershell is what it exists.

@ScottPack Good. Keep your grimey hands off of my tools

6:38 PM
@MichaelHampton Combine telnet with ssh. Right. Yeah. So, what.. I don't even.

@pauska sshelnet

@pauska Yeah... all I could do was hand him some rope and point him toward a tree.

PowerSploit
That's what I was thinking of

Anyone know if it's safe to take a DFS-replicating fileserver out of production, do a chkdsk on it to fix index errors, and put it back? Do I risk losing files all over the place if the chkdsk actually salvaged files?

@MDMarra Ah, I pulled up this github.com/PoshSec

6:40 PM
@pauska DFS does last-written conflict resolution so maybe?
But the mod date shouldn't change if chkdsk pulls something back to life
so maybe not?
@ScottPack yeah, I saw that too and was like nope
@ScottPack Get-GPPPassword

Retrieves the plaintext password for accounts pushed through Group Policy in groups.xml.

@MDMarra I actually need to learn more Windows stuff. Too much of it is just unknown to me.

Has the troll fucked off back to his bridge?

@MDMarra that's basically where I'm at.. "maybe"
@Chopper3 wouldn't know really!

@pauska You can always take it out of the replication group, run chkdsk, and robocopy /mir from a known good replica just in case
it'll only overwrite changed items
should be quick and leave you in a good state

good idea, except that this server has millions of files
and it has to do it over a 100mbit mpls link

6:43 PM
it should only take like an hour if they're mostly the same
Oh 100Mbps

We have way too many W2K machines still

a /mir over 1GbE against two volumes with about a million files took about 20 minutes when things were mostly the same
just for reference

@Cole I'm decommissioning one as we speak

Of course, file size and all that matters

@RyanRies wish I was
I was just asked if we can enabled RDP on Windows 2000
I hate my life.

6:45 PM
@MDMarra this will be 2.1 million files across MPLS.. but fuck it, users are already directed away from this server

@RyanRies have you seen this github? github.com/mattifestation/PowerSploit
Just realized you might like this

@Cole Do it, they'll be more eager to let you shut it down after a few Chinese people pwn it

@pauska I really think you'd be fine without that (maybe)

@MDMarra Yeah, that dude is bad ass... I sort of contributed to one of his scripts

word up

6:47 PM
The groups.xml password grabber one

Yay we're pushing out PowerShell to XP machines and enabling PSRemoting
FUCK YEAH BITCHES.

@MDMarra I just got a great idea.. I'll just use this as an opportunity to move to WS2012 (dedup, wee)

word up

@MDMarra do you still need to enable WinRM then create a Enable-PSRemoting script to enable it for all?

I don't use PSRemoting

6:53 PM
@MDMarra aye

I probably should, but I always found a way around it
like invoke-command blocks or whatever

That WinRM uses a single port is a godsend to me
RPC with dynamic ports is something the network guys don't like
So I dont' have to turn their precious firewalls to swiss cheese

@RyanRies Like the network admins that fight with me when I need a domain-joined server in the DMZ

@MDMarra yep

None of our servers in the DMZ are domain-joined.

6:56 PM
Most aren't here
But we have a few, like SharePoint
Exchange CAS, etc

@RyanRies so hm, I could have the comms guys open up the single port to the DMZ for me then...to manage those machines easier.. hmm

Still haven't had a chance to do a deep-dive with Exchange 2013 yet.
@Cole Yep, updated WinRM uses 5986 for secure comms

@RyanRies thank you sir!

Iain has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

That'll be fucking awesome

6:59 PM
@Cole 'course you can change that port to whatever you want

Why am I getting sick right before surgery?
@RyanRies I don't foresee it being a big deal tbh.
