I want to move a selection of files from a Windows 7 search to another folder but the right-click pop-up menu option for cut is disabled, why? Only copy is possible and I don't wish to make more than one copy of the files.
This cut facility from search results was available in Windows XP.
@Jacob that was me, in response to a flag...I wasn't sure about it myself, but since another user felt it might be okay for SF and I felt that way too, we migrated it...it is really vague and low-quality....sorry about that!
i moved my local private key to id_rsa.bkp, and then successfully ssh'd into a remote server sans passwor. i was expecting an authentication error. is this an silly misunderstanding or a decent question?
Super User is for computer enthusiasts and power users, your question is about computer software and is not listed under "not about" thus it lies within the borders defined by the FAQ and is allowed on our site.
you misunderstood @TomWij, Emacs isn't a computer program but a programming environment o.O
> @Ivo: You shouldn't compare Emacs to just any other programming tool, because Emacs is different. Most users of Eclipse for example rarely customize/extend their tool, because it's simply too complicated and time consuming. Emacs users on the other hand customize/extend their tool frequently. –
> @Ivo: It's clear to me that you're not an Emacs user and in fact don't get the whole Emacs culture at all: Emacs is a working environment and many users like to tweak their environment to a high degree. A question on how to achieve X within Emacs may result in a very simple answer like: "Use menu Tools > Spell Checking ..." and as such be suitable for SU.
> However, often these simple questions result in answers by expert Emacs wizards showing you some Lisp code that solves your problem... So how would you know in advance on which site to ask?
Proposal: Emacs
As already discussed on Meta, there is no one site to discuss Emacs. Emacs questions on SO get closed and moved to SU, and vice versa. Emacs is a seamless blend of application and programming platform, so neither site fits. Speaking for myself, I don't want to follow tags on two ...
I'd like to know if there is an editor that has PHP code completion and has a fullscreen (not the way komodo edit or notepad++ have) like gedit. I've been searching for some but couldn't find any.
no stupid-FTP features, no code-folding, no syntax highlighting, no spell-check, no regex search, no status bars, no line gutter. REEAAAAAALLY DISTRACTION FREE!
and there's just one row of toolbar icons. DISTRACTION FREE!!!!
Let's say we've opened an Emacs community, will the questions at SO, SU and Prog.SE disappear?
No. Why? Because the FAQ still allows them and people will still land there! Can this be solved?
No. Why? Because there is no reason to migrate them nor list every single Editor/IDE in the FAQ.
Tim...
Yeah, it's simply "emacs doesn't work because of to the guidelines and you can't do this for every single editor/ide; thus you might be interested in forming a IDE Experts community instead"
It's reasonable for Super User to allow text editing and just disallow IDE Expert questions by stating that in the site list in the FAQ, same counts for SO/Prog.SE as far as I know. I've also proposed (Copy) Editors (the people, not the software) but that will most likely don't work anyway. :P
hrmm I have a very strange problem with my box.. all the sudden the screen just says no signal, after turning it on.. I have a Gigabyte GTX 470 connected to a samsung screen via hdmi
> The green lights shows the voltage load of the card. As the GTX 470 SOC uses more power the green LED lights make their way across the back of the card. For some reason in Windows 7 all the green lights are always on despite the voltage load. With XP it works fine.
I don't think so, they should show on the first screen it can find.
But you might have a BIOS where you have to choose between VGA/PCI-E so you might want to check if you can change it.
Because turning it off/on in Windows might indeed trigger Windows to detect it and show something on it, while turning it off/on during Boot has no effect.
If BIOS doesn't help, I would just suggest you to figure out whether it's monitor or card first, then try to reseat it (perhaps in another PCI-E slot) and check the connections.
It's always handy if you have another computer, monitor or hardware components to test with. Try family, friends and in the worst case you'll need to ask a local computer store...
if one is faulty or makes the mobo short-circuit we can exclude that
and I would disconnect everything except for the RAM, GPU + CPU if you can't get anything on your screen then, well then we know none of the other things could be the cause ;)
my diagnosis... If nothing has changed at all, it is one of three things (I wrote about this recently) - PSU, MOBO, or graphics card. Most common is in this order - if you have had a few weird problems (e.g. crashes) it could be the PSU doing wrong voltages. If everything was working, most likely the graphics are busted - after that, mobo blown is usuallyrare
Yes, the graphics card has it's own BIOS, typically it tells the graphics card how to start up and controls the fans speeds before software takes over
It's why with some graphics card you hear a "whoosh" as your machine starts up then it settles down. The card defaults to high fan speed on boot in order to prevent damage, then it settles down as the BIOS (and subsequently the drivers) take over fan speed
A lot of software updates follow the scheme of v0.1 to v0.2 to v2.6.5.6. What do these "updates" to software really mean? Is there an industry standard always followed or do programmers pretty much keep raising the update # or adding more decimals?
"Is there an industry standard". No. Who writes "industry standards"? ANSI? ISO? ECMA? Please don't write a meaningless phrase like "industry standard". Please name a specific standards-writing organization.
Someone has just taken a screenshot, pasted it into Word, printed it off, highlighted a couple of bits and then scanned it back in so that they can email the highlighted version to people. All this instead of learning how to use Paint.
> “ Some questions are logically nonsensical because the querent thinks they know more than they do. A lot of these have the form ‘How do I use X to accomplish Y?’ There's nothing wrong with this, except that sometimes X is a chocolate-covered banana and Y is the integration of European currency systems.”
if they would let me loose on WebApps with that, I'd close half the site
where are questions there like: how do I do X in Gmail? where the answer is just changing some setting, rather than hacking together some chrome extension...
I tend not to ask questions here, this is like one of those nice sanctuary of calm type places, where sane people go to get some peace and quiet. Kindof like the scary devil monastery...
I just noticed, why do you want to torch area51 @IvoFlipse ?
you end up using str a lot to concantenate variables together
@IvoFlipse I can imagine, I try to avoid theoretical problems as a rule because they tend to assume things that are either unprovable or just plain wrong. I like engineers because they tend to work with real world things that are solid and provable.
