12:03 AM
@TOWMN new alienware 13 with OLED seems to have actually come out ;p

Bob
@TOWMN ? :(

12:18 AM
It seems like that caching thing is related to me opening the try through ImgBurn instead of using the button on the device

12:41 AM
even more weird.

12:55 AM
They're probably hacking the eject call so it works with all drives or something silly like that.

1:10 AM
Well, there's also an Eject option in the Windows Explorer context menu for the driver, but I never use that. I would assume ImgBurn calls the same function
I could test if the Explorer option does the same thing, but I just inserted the last disc \o/
Second layer of that box was all slim cases O____O

hm
I'm debating the same but I'm pretty sure I've not used a optical disk in long enough that I won't miss em
The new nokia phones seem neat
Stock android it seems, and if they actually sell them here, my mom was a loyal nokia user for years so I can get her to upgrade ;p

Bob
hm
I can't tell if this is bread or a rock

Then it's a rock

1:27 AM
Dwarf bread

Dwarven battle bread.
Forged in the bakeries of mount doom.

1:49 AM
Yea... I'm in Middle-Earth... You guys are just posers.
We even have (had) giant Eagles here:
The Haast's eagle (Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct species of eagle that once lived in the South Island of New Zealand, commonly accepted to be the Pouakai of Maori legend. The species was the largest eagle known to have existed. Its massive size is explained as an evolutionary response to the size of its prey - the flightless moa, the largest of which could weigh 230 kg (510 lb). Haast's eagle became extinct around 1400, after the moa were hunted to extinction by the first Māori. == Taxonomy == Haast's eagle was first described by Julius von Haast in 1871 from remains discovered by F. Fuller...

2:37 AM
Pretty sure Middle earth was like.... stoke

Bob
2:48 AM
lol, people are already asking for an ovh.com.au site on the dc.syd mailing list

@Bob I know some of those words.

a what site why
what's the dc.syd mailing list for?

UGH
I've had to explain my fault 3 times today because I've dealth with 3 changes in the Helpdesk staff. >:(

@MichaelFrank :(
we're better than that here D:
at least, I am :/

Yea, one guy was like "I'll hand you over to my colleague as I am leaving for the day"
Next guy "Hi, what seems to be the problem?"
FDSJGDSOGDSLN

3:03 AM
catlike typing detected

@MichaelFrank urgh no no no
i guess you can't move away from using them.

Global contract.
They're a BIG supplier as well. You'd probably guess them in like 5 guesses.

3:21 AM
derp
sadness.
we also do a service where you tell us about that problem you have
and we deal with them for you
:D

@djsmiley2k ah! Hitmen?

I realllllly hope they figure this out soon. I finish work in 35 minutes.

rto?

Bob
> We are working to launch soon (April) our AUS/NZ subsidiary.Currently, we’are hiring and training the local team :ovh.com/us/careers/available-positions/?country=au#topIn a couple of weeks, we’ll launch the Australian subsidiary with :- a local website : ovh.com.au, (with AUD $)- Australian phone support (1300XXXXXX) : sale and technical team- a local marketing and event team,
:O
also, @JourneymanGeek, poke ^ wonder if you'd be interested :P

3:34 AM
@Bob ovh.com/us/careers/… looks interesting

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just remembered they were opening a sg dc too :P
@djsmiley2k OVH Sydney DC

ooooooo

Bob
There's also a dc.sgd list btw @JourneymanGeek
but it's mostly just chatter

what's a dc.foo list?

Bob
3:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek Singapore DC mailing list. OVH.

ah
thanks for the lead ;p
sent in an email to apply (which is good! Real people may read it!)

Bob
that quote above was from the dc.syd list

yeah, I looked at their jobs page ;p

Bob
I think they're more actively looking for AU support staff at the moment
SG one doesn't seem to be up yet
they're mostly setting up the DC at the moment, AFAIK

Well, I applied to the same role at amazon, and they at least talked to me so...

Bob
3:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek keep an eye on it, it should have more spots in a couple months :P

Bob
dunno how open you were to moving, but I'd expect a fair few local applicants to the syd one and they do have the sgd one so it's probably not worth the trouble :P

tbh, not very for now
the two old men and all that ;p

Bob
ah

(my dad and my dog ;p)
tbh, dad's probably mostly fine

Bob
3:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek you know. I actually guessed that :P

I love these Live Meeting chats where everyone is silent and busily "working".

can someone fix my ear plz
seems i still have a hole in my ear drum :/

Here, scratch it with this : --+------------------

lol
yewah no
i got the hole from a really bad cold and pressure build up
but the weird... 'pus' stuff has come back :/

3:49 AM
0_0

yeah, it's a bit ick :/

gonna see a doctor??

I had grommets when I was a kid, that's like a deliberate hole

yeah after i'm off night shifts
@MichaelFrank nod

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I feel weird that this has to be brought up so much.

3:51 AM
@Bob IKR?

@Bob :D
the internet is the place for health, and legal issues!
the ONLY place!

Bob
It's like... "my body is dying doing weird shit, help" "...try a doctor???"

Haha I'm not asking what I should do
I know I need to see a doc

@Bob I'm pretty sure TOWMN kinda did it for attention ;p
See? THAT'S THE SORT OF ATTITUDE I WANT TO SEE!

I'm just trying to make myself feel better by someone else going 'oh I had that happen! .... then my leg fell off'
is this towmn something a bout a dog/---cat---

3:52 AM
ah
No
@djsmiley2k the one with many names
its easier than remembering what name they are using this week

yah
that.

then they changed their name to TOWMN ;p

Works for me ;p

There's definately a large amount of attention seeking there, which is fine, as long as it's non-distruptive.

3:53 AM
lol
and non dramatic

Bob
DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Quick, someone give me a website I haven't been to before that only uses HTTP!

Bob
*scratches head*
lol
I was trying to dig up the web services I had running, but they're all HTTPS -_-
Speaking of. I really need to renew that ownCloud cert.
And that mumble cert.
urk.

@Bob I think there's literally no reason for anyone to go there, so he's certain to have not gone there before ;p
@MichaelFrank done?

4:11 AM
Yea... No dice.
Wow... now Cisco are involved. D:
I gonna be here all night T____T

so you can't connect to 8.8.8.8?

Nope.
Can't even hit the captive portal
Getting an IP and they can see the connections in the Cisco controller interface, but there's just no internet connection.

Bob
@MichaelFrank so what's the problem? tracert?

@Bob Tracert doesn't leave the machine it starts on.

Bob
@MichaelFrank So. route print?

4:17 AM
@Bob I dunno what I'm looking at on that...

Bob
@MichaelFrank It shows the network routes.

show us
we do :D

Bob
8.8.8.8 is probably caught by destination 0.0.0.0 w/ netmask 0.0.0.0 (default) unless there's a more specific one that matches

take a photo if you can't just copy/paste

Bob
so packets with that destination are sent to the defined gateway via the defined interface
actually. is this a single machine, or the entire network?

4:21 AM
Anything connecting to our "public" wifi

ok, so does a device connecting get a IP, does it get a default route to a gateway? Can it ping said gateway?
It doesn't sound like it can tbh, but only you can tell us
If yo ucan tell me what kind of device is providing the wifi then i might be able to identify the configuration to check

You're right, it can't ping the gateway.

well then 8.8.8.8 is never going to work
is the gateway even up?

Bob
The gateway itself must have a route (even if the route is only on-link)

Good point! (though I believed that the route is always autogenerated from the dhcp assignment...)

Bob
4:26 AM
@djsmiley2k well, more accurately, the gateway must be reachable, which means it either needs a gateway of its own or must be on the same broadcast domain (subnet) as the device...

nod

Bob
@MichaelFrank Well, that looks alright... you have wireshark handy?

Not on that machine.

Bob
@MichaelFrank can you run a netsh trace?
goal is to see what's happening with ARP

4:31 AM
I can't elevate currently... Lemme see what I can do.

Bob
@MichaelFrank wait. you got one ping response?
so it's not that it's not connecting... just dropping most packets :\

That was a host unreachable reply from 10.69.151.65

Bob
@MichaelFrank what's the IP of the device you're testing from?

how big is that subnet o_O
it's 10.69.151.65
yeah

We have a lot of users?

4:32 AM
either that's a huge subnet.... or your gateway is set wrong

Bob
...why are you getting replies from .151.65?
@djsmiley2k where'd you get that from?

@bob the interface address
in the routing table

The first route has a gateway of .148.5 with a interface of .151.65

yeha, sry

Bob
anyway, that makes more sense now

4:33 AM
@MichaelFrank are you sure your gateway is 148.5?

Bob
@MichaelFrank try to get a packet cap if you can

becaus that makes a rather large subnet

Bob
@djsmiley2k not unheard of, though...

@Bob no, but it's the first thing that look odd to me, occams razor

Bob
I'd be interested in what's coming back from DHCP and ARP
@djsmiley2k true, worth double-checking

4:35 AM
That's what the wireless connection details show as the gateway

a /22
@MichaelFrank it gets that via the dhcp, it maybe wrong
hense why I'm asking you what it should be
not what the computer is using.
I can setup dhcp to tell you your gateway is 8.8.8.8 for example :P
Address:   10.69.148.5           00001010.01000101.100101 00.00000101
Netmask:   255.255.252.0 = 22    11111111.11111111.111111 00.00000000
Wildcard:  0.0.3.255             00000000.00000000.000000 11.11111111
=>
Network:   10.69.148.0/22        00001010.01000101.100101 00.00000000 (Class A)
Broadcast: 10.69.151.255         00001010.01000101.100101 11.11111111

HostMax:   10.69.151.254         00001010.01000101.100101 11.11111110

I've got no idea. I'm just the small fish in this company. :(

@MichaelFrank :) my guess right now is this AP was configured on a network where the gateway WAS .148.5
I don't think it is on the same network anymore, and someone forgot to fix it

Shit... you know what it probably is? There was a power outage over the weekend and some device somewhere was sitting on an unsaved config.

:)
someone, somewhere should be able to tell you what the gateway should be
until you know that, debugging it is kind of impossible
actually
you can look at your subnet for your local interface
see if it is a /22
if it's 24, that proves you'd never be able to connect to that gateway
ipconfig /all in cmd, look for subnet mask against the ip
255.255.252.0 is what I don't want to see ;D

4:41 AM
@djsmiley2k You should probably close your eyes...

@MichaelFrank I'm expecting 255.255.255.0

It's 252.0

Bob
@djsmiley2k better than the guy suggesting a /16
well there you go

ok, then that gateway 'should' be reachable

Bob
@MichaelFrank make sure the device providing the gateway is actually ... y'know ... running

4:43 AM
It's possible the gateway itself is misconfigured too, if it's on a /24 it'd not reply.

Bob
has blinkenlights

@Bob But it's in Australia... (I think)

Bob
@MichaelFrank gimme the address and I'll pop over :P

if you happen to have a device on the .148.0 network that'd help
errr, oh dear

@Bob Somewhere in Boronia. I believe.

4:44 AM
I've got a guy in Australia I can call ;D

Bob
@MichaelFrank wheretf is that O_O
urk, Melb

this is starting to sound like it's some mashed together network with no documentation :/

When you have 160k employees everything is a little mashed.

lol

Bob
when you have 160k employees things should be rather less mashed than this O_O

4:47 AM
when you hav that many employees you should have a properly documented network
and i'd expect fully routed, not huge subnets :(

Bob
@djsmiley2k imagine the broadcasts!

@Bob exactly :/

Bob
to be fair, a /22 isn't that bad
that's only 1024

yeah
but... no need :/
well I'm sure there is some legit needs, but still

How's this for fun? All of our internet traffic proxies through Australia. Not particularly bad. But when we log a ticket for slow internet access, they tell us that the top talkers are proxy1 and proxy2.

4:50 AM
Where you based @MichaelFrank?

Middle-Earth New Zealand

heh
we got some clients there too
(the same clients that are in Aus.)
I'm in the real middle earth :P

> The editors-in-chief of two of America’s top PC hardware and technology publications have confirmed to Wccftech that they have indeed been approached by Intel regarding upcoming Ryzen reviews. Although both said that it was business as usual. Affirming that Intel’s response following AMD’s Ryzen announcement was what they had expected it to be and nothing was particularly unusual about it.
I suppose at least one of those publications is AnandTech or Tom's Hardware.
(both are owned by Purch but they have their own editorial teams)
Well, it was much ado about nothing.

Bob
@bwDraco "SemiAccurate" sounds ... semi-accurate.
:P

5:16 AM
@bwDraco that reads a lot like a opinion piece.
> With some reports claiming that Intel personnel may have even approached some customers with “incentive rebates” and other special promotions to exclusively use Intel chips.

> Today is Friday so it is time for another Intel CPU generation code name. SemiAccurate exclusively brought you the Icelake name almost two years ago, 112 weeks to be exact, but not the next one.
er... did they get the wrong link?
pcgamesn.com/amd/amd-fear-intel-ryzen-reprisal seems to be primarily AMD's 10K filing
and is linked twice.

Yeah. I was really skeptical on first reading.
I felt Wccftech blew it out of proportion.

> he editors-in-chief of two of America’s top PC hardware and technology publications
Who?

spoke on condition of anonymity
Can't stay here much longer. Good night.

Anonymity = "I made this up to gat more hits"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Something stinks here, and it's not just what Intel might be doing.
@JourneymanGeek Eh, there's potentially good reasons for anonymity. See, NDA.
but...
> Intel PR sent out a last-minute “call us before you write” email to most of the press, but not SemiAccurate, after hours last night.
"they approached our competitors but not us!" sounds fishy...

5:23 AM
@Bob If there were one piece of up to date, independently verifiable information there...

11 hours ago, by bwDraco
These are rumors, but the mere mention of Intel playing dirty to prevent AMD from competing gets me very angry.

@Bob also says though, its common practice

(see context)

shrug
Vote with your wallet ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I'm more pointing out that they (SA?) made the claim with nothing backing it up ... but were careful to note that they weren't approached

5:24 AM
I actually might build a ryzen box, once I got a job.

lol

Bob
Also, quick google says SA attempted to report in 2011 that Apple had concrete plans to drop Intel "it not now, then in 2-3 years" for ARM...

i remember when my journalist friend was threatened by ms about ninja gaiden on the 360

@Bob and that guy's use of punctuation is... terrible

basically they were told the mag wouldn't get any review copies of bioshock, if it wasn't positive.

Bob
5:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek I was planning to look at the lower end... would make an interesting remote VM box

AMD shouldn't make excuses. They have a product that's pretty darned interesting

5 mins ago, by bwDraco
I felt Wccftech blew it out of proportion.

@Bob ALL THOSE CORES!
For not much money

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder if anyone will do a NUC-like form factor.
@JourneymanGeek speaking of.
> You could infer that they are suddenly really worried about something.

@Bob video would be tricky

5:26 AM
Well, the prospect of being able to get an 8C/16T processor for US$330 is very alluring.

Bob
Uh. It's not like anything changed in the last month. suddenly really worried, suuure.

@Bob with AMD talking about zen for what..
2 years?
I'm seriously hoping its their pentium M moment.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's sensationalist language. I don't like it.

Bob
@bwDraco When I say low end, I meant lower than that. As in, the cheapest ones they have :P
I still think 8 cores is overkill.

5:27 AM
Benchmarks have been up for the last few months so they're well aware of the threat. Again, Wccftech blew it way out of proportion.

@Bob for a VM host, less so.

Bob
Heck, I can't even saturate 4 cores running a bunch of VMs
@JourneymanGeek yea, depends what you do with them, but... I'm currently running with 4 cores on my servers and they're under 10% CPU utilisation :\

@bwDraco we arn't critisizing you ;p
We're just saying the article is a load of horse hockey.

Yup.

I sometimes link articles I know are horse hockey to snark at them ;p
(see various references to "magic rocks")

Bob
5:29 AM
Heck. If Intel were to pull something funny, they'd not do it in the last two weeks, I'm pretty sure.
It takes longer than that to get contracts worked out.

Yup
and IMO, these are essentially their HEDT parts
their 'regular' and APU parts are what should scare intel.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Think the idea was these would compete with Intel's regular parts.

@Bob You probably need integrated graphics for a NUC style form factor

Bob
Actually, that's exactly what they do.

@Bob naw, they're going after the HEDT stuff
at the prices of the regular parts

Bob
5:30 AM
High core counts, but their PCIe lanes are similar to Intel consumer parts.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Intel HEDT still wins on the 40 PCIe lanes.

Yeah, there's that

Intel is going to lose sales on their HEDT, i7-7700K, and i5-7600K.

Bob
IIRC Ryzen is still 24

5:31 AM
Who uses 40 PCIe lanes?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The people who buy HEDT, I'd expect :P

(That's er... 2 full fat video cards, and other stuff)

LMG? XD

hmm. 16+16+ 4 (m2)

Pixar? ;)

5:32 AM
Below that, Intel's new low-power parts (e.g. 2C/4T Pentiums) will keep them going; AMD has no immediate answer to these parts.

@djsmiley2k naw, those places just use a crapload of xeon blades
Sometimes older ones

:D
I once hearda bout Pixars setup
it was bonkers.

I worked in VFX ;p

Anyway, I can't get this till to load the remote connection :(

'Night.

5:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek I basically caused an entire room of computers to fail from overheating at college due to me using them as a render farm xD
This is after me warning the lecturer who thought he knew better, that they were under speced and already over heating

@djsmiley2k silly thing is, I don't know if my NDA is still in effect.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's actually something I was looking at, just for storage...

I mean, quite a lot of information on what my former employer used was available publicly.
and I doubt they'll be digging through transcripts for outdated information on a site they closed down
But yeah, crapload of blades, with water cooled racks

Hmmm the store is in Melbourne
you headed that way, right @MichaelFrank? ;)

@djsmiley2k @TOWMN might be ;p

5:36 AM
rofl

@bwDraco they can't fire me, they already did ;)
and everyone

:35706094 ouch i recall that, kind of

You were laid off.

ANd when talking about current employers I stick to public information
which there's a ton of

It wasn't your fault.

5:36 AM
yah, that's safest I find

Amusingly, I never signed an NDA at the casino

I don't identify the clients.

@djsmiley2k people have doxed me here ;p

o_O

Again, good night.

5:37 AM
I'd be interested to find what info people can pull up on me
night @bwDraco

I've had 2 of my three employers mentioned
and no one's heard of the third ;p
(I mean, everyone knows I worked at the building with a boat on top ;p)

boat on top o_O?!
I doubt anyone here has heard of any of mine
except maybe @Burgi
and the other english.

@djsmiley2k oh it's not a big secret. I linked my movie credits

5:54 AM
Saves by the bell...
Fire alarm started going off. Had to evacuate.

@MichaelFrank :D
someone stolen the server?

Maybe! Sneak it out while everyone is evacuating.

sounds like a plan

6:16 AM
i haven't slept :(

:O
wut
Why not
I've not, but that's because night shift XD
29 minutes to go

7:00 AM
dunno
red bull and water
thats what is going to fuel me today

I'm not feeling too good.
Something I ate upset my tummy.

Bob
:(

7:43 AM
@Burgi Cafe latte!
@djsmiley2k What exactly do you do?
