Q: Laptop only works after sticking in freezer, is there something inside it that I can replace?

RihaI have an Acer Aspire V5, and about two months ago it wouldn't turn on. It did not overheat, there were no power surges, and it wasn't plugged in overnight. I turned it off and in the morning, the power light blinked multiple times when pressed, but the computer wouldn't boot, it didn't matter wh...

lol

How do you even go 'Oh this laptop doesn't work, maybe I'll pop it in the freezer...'

...too broad. Voted to close.

@djsmiley2k Second hand information most likely.

M4RK77Dism++ is what you're looking for (https://www.chuyu.me/en/index.html). You will save gigabytes of space... You'll need to select "Replaced WinSxS assemblies". If you do this - it'll give you a warning that these installed updates cannot be uninstalled. Click ok, then scan It'll give you an...

@Ramhound many things, some degree of system cleanup (with risks) driver backups (<3), apparently WIM backups ...

Wim backups? Would be wonderful if I could read the documentation:-$

yeah, its in chinese
sadly my windows 10 VM is too small to do a proper test of backing up and restoring

Yeah, that's typically the problem with VMs unless they are using for testing but I reversed my vote for the improvement effort

1:47 AM
lol
I edited it cause its a bloody interesting tool people need to know about
imgur is being a pain

SO is being hit with a flood from webcams now
I still have to try and wipe and reinstall wifes laptop :/

hey guys, anyone able to help me out with some nginx config? I want:

a.) handle static files
b.) pass .php and all other requests to apache
unfortunately my nginx likes to handle .php as static files

ideally with a ssd too but it could also have a new keyboard as the c key keeps stopping working, the > arrow key doesn't work at all, and the J key regularly pops off

@Isaac typically, chat is not the right place for quick, technical questions
@djsmiley2k 0_0

1:53 AM
yah post it in a question, with config examples of what you have right now
@JourneymanGeek hey, i replaced the monitor after I accidently knocked it off the sofa...
(I also brought her the laptop many a year ago sooooo)

Bob
@Nick_Craver Is there a correlation between wifi devices you make fun of on twitter and attacks on our site?

@djsmiley2k time for a new laptop? ;p

@JourneymanGeek You offering? XD
I have no money

neither do I ;p

I got 2 kids :P

I threw in 60 dollar/120gb SSDs into core2duos and they actually run quite well
and this was some time back

Nod.
Sad, when Idon't even have that kinda cash :(

oh, now, I can't do that ;p

@JourneymanGeek superuser.com/users/690459/ricardo has defaced every one of his answers
Alright so only the 4 I looked at, the 5th one they didn't

@Ramhound better to let me deal with it

@JourneymanGeek , I actually took the top users in the reputation league standings for an entire year: 2016.

2:09 AM
They apparently deface every question/answer on every site

@Ramhound yeah, its sorted

I figured

There should be an auto-flag for that

Pretty sure there is

@Run5k My tough love prepares you for review queue, kidding, maybe...I save my upvotes for the absolutely best questions and answers. Still waiting on a reason that Liberal downvoting and conservative upvoting is actually bad.

Q: Windows 10 Full Drive Format Fails

DavidBI recently bought two USB3 external hard drives that I want to do a full (not quick) format on using the Windows formatter. For whatever reason though, I keep getting an error for both drives stating that Windows could not complete the format. I have tried formatting these drives using different ...

Anyone got any ideas?

@Ramhound I realize that there will always be some degree of subjectivity regarding the up-vote/down-vote ratio, but from my perspective the Help Center guidance still seems like the ideal philosophy: "The up-vote privilege comes first because that's what you should focus on: pushing great content to the top. Down-voting should be reserved for extreme cases. It's not meant as a substitute for communication and editing."

so we are giving out participation awards now :-) Actually i agree , we shouldnt kick everyone in the teeth until after they deserve it, it makes thousands of people to run off and never come back.

I upvote good stuff, and downvote bad :O
However I think for every @Ramhound there is a @JourneymanGeek so in the end it all works out :D

@djsmiley2k I also sometimes edit posts that don't meet standards cause I like the product ;p

3:15 AM
I edit things that I can improve.

I was trying to make a list of all the things I want to do, and have not yet.
Then i realised how much doing them would cost, sooo I decided to make a fuket list , of all the things I Won't be doing before I die.

:D
which list is longer?

well the one with "fly to the Moon" on it

something is crushing my machine irghtn ow
/me attempts to open task manager

@Run5k I have tried to communicate, I have determined, most people don't want to hear feedback so I no longer provide it when I feel it will cause a problem.
I still don't plan not to issue a vote on a contribution I think is helpful or unhelpful though. The help center doesn't do a good job explaining that the developers also feel downvotes are very important. I will leave the tactful comment to somebody with that ability.

3:44 AM
man, i so want a lathe d:

????

lol
a lathe's on my bucket list

:)
unless I can get some kind of desktop one, there's no way it's happening in say the next 20. years..
I just wanna... work wood
:O
it looks so awesome on youtube :D

@djsmiley2k there's these small 'multi purpose' models for that

how small o_O
/me has never actually looked

3:51 AM
there's cheaper clones too

Oh my
it's a drill press, and a lathe?

i didn't realise this kinda thing exists
how big is it?
compared to say, your dog
~(I know the size of a dog :D )

I donno

3:54 AM
banggood.com/… is a clone
> table size: 90 x 90mm

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "cheaper"
@JourneymanGeek ...that's tiny

I didn't even realise this kinda thing existed
9cm
hmmm not too bad
I could make small stuff on it

@JourneymanGeek in this case you figure it was the original, everyone else is buying and re-labeling the china one to sell $$$$

I also want to do some welding.
i've got my eletronics to the point where I can follow a guide to make something
but most 'somethings' require a nice case, or box, or whatever
and I'm like... well damn, need to learn that now :D
So anyone here do any serious wood working, or not so serious?

you wouldnt catch me making fancy dowling, I have had to sand and paint it :-) nope, stays straight or even square
Plastic, make cases like everything else, use acrylics and abs plastics, with it you can have a project box made in a day in most cases.
wood glue is not forever, plastic junk that is solvented together or melded, or sonic (yea) sealed, is all the same materials, so the assembly lasts about as long as the plastic itself.

4:07 AM
@Psycogeek just glue it?
don't just use glue on wood
pin stuff, do it properly
proper joins and stuff etc
that's what I want to learn D:

@Psycogeek the original version is allegedly better made.

ahh you mean like dovetails and mitered joints and , me i prefer Flat straight simple and screwed. Even dowling wood is not as good as butting it piloting it and driving a hunk of spiral steel in.

@djsmiley2k i throw stuff together as needed
nothing pretty

why we screw everything up , and it lasts for decades for real. while some of the fancy stuff is breaking away , and all the extra pieces and (art) work.
indeed it is only fine craftsmanship that assembles the wood so well that nary even a nail would be needed. Myself i have never needed or afforded that, to ME , it is all about the function over form, does it do the job?

4:17 AM
throwing stuff together is fine

butt joints are weak

functional stuff is what I'm thinking about

@djsmiley2k that needs a few more tools.
heh. I watch a rediculous number of woodworking channels
while he's hipster as hell, youtube.com/channel/UC1V-DYqsaj764uBis9-UDug is worth a watch
also like the samurai carpenter

i'm slowly collecting some tools...

I'm not going to be able to do things properly till I move out ;p

4:20 AM
I did go to wood shop, but generally tossed those ideas, and not only got things done 15 times faster, but my stuff is still solid. cant say the same about thier glued stuff, it all had to be glued again at one time or another. Almost caused severe injury as the glue failed on the (oh that was fine craftsnanship) kitchen chairs
If a screw was in there instead, it would bend and bend and bend, instead it pops, cracks, fails.

sounds shoddy.

most shop made furniture tends to be.

well, only so much you can do, wood to wood. The baseboards we were putting in had mutilV cuts to precisely assemble them to make them look like whole wood.
One of the workers drop them 8 feet, thinking they were real wood. they all fell apart on impact, all of them. i was surprised.
now woulld the Nut Bolt set i would put in :-) have fallen apart ? no
Ok ok so i have "Steam Punk" baseboards. thats a good thing now , isnt it :-)

You might as well buy the DIY furniture kits that you can get for cheap online and put it together yourself. That way, you know how well it'll hold up.

what's a base board?
@bwDraco Ikea ftw

4:29 AM
baseboards, are the bottom trim piece on the walls. hiding the mess :-)

oh, skirting board, right
and they aren't made of wood there?

yea. most of them are made of recycled garbage. which explode when the dog peed on them.

:O
here they are wood
tho, the houses are all 1940's so yeah
wasn't much left after the germans were done

the ones I had chosen were Pine. they also have oak (3X$) and even plastic, the plastic is nice if you dont have a mindset over "photo finish" faux wood grain.
explode is the term we been using when a piece of "fiberboard" expands to 3X original size as soon as it gets wet.

jeeeeeeeeeesys

4:40 AM
there was fiberboard used throughout this Million . . . .

400 mile NFC range

doller house.
the window shelves, which would get rain on them if the window was open, would explode , the baseboard when the dog tinkled, and the doors even (fiberboard). Even painting this crappy fiberboard causes it to expand some where the paint wet it.
(that is why they come pre-primed)

lol
houses here are better build
at least the older ones.

houses here were, for sometime, and they still have lots of advancements as they build outside walls and roofs with Sawdustboard, trim with recycled cardboard fiberboard, and press out doors on a machine :-)
there are 3 (expencive) houses being built in these last months, and they had ChipBoard for the walls and roof. Uhh it has been raining, and they only covered it for 1/2 the time. so the walls they are about to hide behind stucco and sheetrock, already look 20 years old.
It might also be that more of the chipboard and sawdustboard are used in california, where there is much less rain.
It is all certified , and code, and really does work great if it stays dry. But wood expands, and wood expands and contracts every season. Glue does not.

Bob
@bwDraco That way I know I should never put any weight on them, at least.
Most "DIY furniture kits" are just particle board and a couple screws...

4:56 AM
yup

That... kinda depends.
The set we used to have had very thick cushions that pretty much ensured it would not collapse on its own unless you put more than a reasonable amount of weight on it.
It's also not the cheap sort of particleboard you often find in cabinets, bookcases, etc.; it's actually oriented strand board, which holds up quite well.

they even make joists out of the stuff now. some of them will be with wet crawlspaces. we shall see how long that lasts. as furnature even sawdustboard lasts.
unless it was no longer in climate controlled houses. put that stuff outside untreated , and time will turn it back to nature.

5:15 AM
We've had countertops made of plywood, MDF, and hardboard. They last quite a long time if you take good care of them, but it's not quite as good as granite.
(MDF is generally very durable as long as you don't abuse it)

5:28 AM
funny how the broadband carriers each wanted to limit excessive downloading . But did they think for a minute? If you got 40 torrents running , you pay your ISP bill On-Time :-)
The people who only dabble on the web here and there, get a bit of e-mail, and watch 2 youtubes, they can do without alltogether , and for much longer.
The guy desperatly trying to re-do his steam game downloads at 300Gig of data, is probably going to keep up with that utility bill, even not require much service.
to top off how stupid it may be to cut-off all the supergeekoids out there, the ISP has to remember who was doing 1st level technical assistance for all thier customers.
It sure was not the ISP :-)

6:04 AM
hm.
I need a thing.

------------> O heres a ball ?

naw, some kinda linux distro I can throw on a USB drive to make it a media player thing
or just throw lxde on it to test the hardware first....

something that runs kodi?
pretty sure you can prob get usb kodi images...

yeah I suppose
openelec looks good
ugh
I need to set up the box in my room

6:38 AM
ʕ◕ᴥ◕ʔ drop bears look so cute at first (ᵔᴥᵔ)

I can't seem to get vga out from the brix

彡 彡 then all the blood ݜ and the running ڠ and screaming 彡 彡

erf
I need stuff in my room to get this working

7:13 AM
ugh
this makes no sense
Ok, cable works on TV and monitor
laptop works on TV and monitor.
NUC works on monitor, not TV

what cable / connection type?

VGA
its an older TV
I'd like to rule out canine human error in a bit

desktops can have disable for ports on them, nobody but me would disable every unused port.

hence testing it on known good everything

7:19 AM
old tv could not handle the "sync" type

Tempted to run that on the edison
Needs spotify premium tho

hm
The NUC is more modern than the laptop

analog VGA and like my ATI&AMD cards, you can do quite a bit of messing with the sync, and of course the resolutions. to possibly feel out a place where it is happy.
could just be that piping out QuadHD , to that TVs vga :-) just doesnt work.

7:39 AM
annnnd
now it works
so its either the cable or me
ugh
both!

or the order you turned it on
or gremlins

or ... solar flares
now, I need to see if I can get sound working

so you turning the Nuc into a TVPC ?

pretty much

7:56 AM
Need a new RCA to 3.5mm converter tho
But that's relatively cheap

Bob

8:32 AM
hey guys

> UniFi supports QoS based on WMM (aka WME).

The UniFi AP maps DSCP value to WMM priorities and process these packets accordingly. UAP considers either DSCP or COS. It compares COS with DSCP (the first 3 bits) and takes whichever has higher value to map to WMM AC according to the table below:
Oh, well then. That makes it a lot clearer

8:48 AM
I do need to spend a bit of time tuning it in, and working out how to move things in

9:19 AM
morning
its snowing
> Just an update on our missing cleaning person - it turns out he has been mugged and is in hospital. They took his cards and wallets from him. We are going to find out where this happened as he works at a lot of places around town or it could have been where he lives but we will let you all know.
poor guy :(

Hello!
@Burgi :(

9:37 AM
hey Burgi
crazy the story of the cleaning mister ...
that's terrible

openelec is rediculously easy to set up :(

9:56 AM
Is there a reason why all hardware manufacturers love to ship their software with broken SSL?
Like, why are they all using self-signed garbage
And constantly pointing me to 192.168.x.x as if that could ever have any useful result
It seems like there would be a point

Bob
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??

I kinda expected that actually

Why are they wasting their money

@HackToHell They will be able to know what people are saving in pocket which gives them more information about people's surfing and purchasing habits ...

@DavidPostill :/
can't they simply make firefox fast again
And firefox os was ....

Bob
10:12 AM
@DavidPostill Uh. That's not even remotely how it works.

@Bob Really?

Bob
@DavidPostill If they wanted info on surfing and purchasing habits ... *cough* browser *cough*

Yes, but they will get even more of this data.
> Pocket will join Mozilla’s product portfolio as a new product line alongside the Firefox web browsers with a focus on promoting the discovery and accessibility of high quality web content.

Bob
To... do what exactly?
I think you're reading a bit too much into a marketing blurb.

@Bob To make money? What other reason could there be?

Bob
10:19 AM
@DavidPostill How so, exactly?
How does that translate to making money?
Are you suggesting they'll start serving ads now?
Because that would be one way to a quick death.
if it means anything at all (and I'm still not sure it does, see: marketing, fluff), it's probably more in line with how Pocket currently shows something like top-5 most-saved

@Bob They already tried once before ... :)

11:10 AM
ugh....
our ISP is having major issues
and my minion broke the repo

11:26 AM
Perfect. Blame it on the ISP

12:25 PM
@Burgi Looks like your minion does more harm than good...

it was a little bit of internet failure
he was trying to merge two pull requests at the same time

12:48 PM
Thinking of getting USB coffee/tea warmer. Anyone tried? Is it worth it?

@Boris_yo Doesn't work apparently. Someone was discussing it here a few months ago

@Rahul2001 i think it was @TOWMN that mentioned it

@Burgi Wait... who's TOWMN again?

@Rahul2001 cat/dog/qasdf.../

Oh, right...

12:53 PM
The One With Many Names.
that's even their official nickname.

Ah

did i unstar that or was it moderated?

Try starring it again so you will know.

or was it our internet crapping out?
intertubes issue

1:13 PM
it was foreign TCP datagrams crossing the great firewall between the US and Mexico.

@Rahul2001 Well it may be that Chinese poorly made do not work. How about quality ones?
Plus 500mAh is low. How about 2 USB ports to get 1000mAh?

I have never used one

@Hennes I am planning on replacing internal laptop DVD/CD drive with HDD using 9.5mm caddy. The thickness (9.5mm) is good but 125mm dimensions are not quite. The size of mine is 127.5mm so I am concerned how it will fit. There will be apparently 2mm wiggle room. How would that affect connection and would it wiggle? There are no screws that would hold it in place which is typical for HDD.

@Boris_yo Doubled sided tape
@Boris_yo @Mokubai Might've used one more than half a decade ago

@Rahul2001 Half a decade? Been quite a while.

1:26 PM
:P

I used a pre-mady caddy which just clicked in place.
2mm is quite a lot though. Maybe thicken the base or the top of the drive?

1:53 PM
@Rahul2001 I didn't do it. Nobody saw me do it. You can't prove anything.
What did i do?

Use a USB coffee warmer
like a barbarian

Wasn't it @allquixotic that had one of them?

Mar 22 '11 at 13:11, by Mokubai
Would a USB mug warmer do the trick? http://www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk/gifts-for-men/work-gift/usb-cup-warmer.html?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=free&utm_term=USB+Cup+Warmer+-+USB+Coffee+Mug+Warmer

I've only looked at them from an electrical perspective and wondered if 2.5W is enough to keep a coffee warm. Never actually used one...
So no barbarians here @JourneymanGeek

I mean, USB cup warmers are a sure sign of a decadant society that can't either drink their drinks hot, or wait for them to cool to an ideal temperature.

1:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek Those don't work, they just showcase how we buy any stupid shit as long as you put a 0.99 sticker on it

@Hennes MADDY CADDY PADDY LADDY RADDY SADDY GADDY NADDY VADDY YADDY BADDY ZADDY FADDY!
@BenN 'lo!

Good morning!

/me stares at remains of lunch on desk....
@BenN Morning :)

I just realised that I've been staring at this subconsciously while thinking about something else for 7 minutes: i.imgur.com/5EGMcyj.gifv

2:38 PM
wtf...
customer services is complaining that we applied an update to our development server

@Bob: apparently ill have access to these networks for free in Aus: Telstra, Vodafone Hutchison Australia Pty Ltd, and Yes Optus
That sounds like it's gonna be most of them (unless you have 10+ operators over there?)

Bob
@TOWMN That's all of them lol

No idea which ones I'll have 4g on for £5 a day though

Bob
Telstra generally best/fastest. Vodafone can be good in metro areas. Optus kinda in the middle, depends on congestion - better network than Vodafone but more users, bigger data plans and maybe more congestion.

In Italy my "free" "roam like home" 3G services get about 20Mb at night and 0.1Mb in busy places, my £3/day 4G services get about 70Mb in busy places and my £1.99 "unlimited" 3G gets about 2Mb

2:47 PM
are you liking italy?

@Bob what's the rural/out of town 3G coverage like? Does it exist?
@Burgi Yes sorta. It's a place

Bob
@TOWMN depends where, but mostly Telstra

@TOWMN my understanding is that in australia outside of the cities its very much like mad max

Bob
You'll get some Optus/Voda along the major routes

2:51 PM
There's a lot of water.
@Bob do train lines count as routes? (in the UK they don't :-P)

Bob
@TOWMN I've never ridden the intercity, so dunno :\

@Bob oh
There's also very long boats here

@TOWMN You're world-touring?

@Rahul2001 no

@Rahul2001 he is running away

2:57 PM
@Burgi ...from?

shrug
the name change police?
