http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/lenovo-announces-powerhouse-laptops-powered-by-new-mobile-xeon-processors/#p3 skylake seems pretty interesting ;p
You could build one hell of an overstuffed laptop with one.

4:40 AM
Hi guys

@AchrafAlmouloudi 'morning.

@JourneymanGeek Pity the poor folks over at android.SE, who will be dealing with "what will Alphabet mean for the future of android?" Qs today :P

4:56 AM
;p

o_0 Any idea why anacron might be running and exiting every second ?
(wtf, ghetto chat markdown)
Aug 11 06:15:47 hera anacron[27614]: Anacron 2.3 started on 2015-08-11
Aug 11 06:15:47 hera anacron[27614]: Normal exit (0 jobs run)
Aug 11 06:15:48 hera anacron[27807]: Anacron 2.3 started on 2015-08-11
Aug 11 06:15:48 hera anacron[27807]: Normal exit (0 jobs run)
/etc/anacrontab is sensible (default, I reckon)
Okay, status exiting silently with code 4 didn't help my confusion; seems non-standard to me...

Bob
5:35 AM
@bertieb ...not a clue
also, hera? :P
(cc @JourneymanGeek)

@Bob Welcome to Olympus, home of the gods :)

Bob
@bertieb yea, JMG does something similar and I copied him :P

(gotta name machines / VMs something...)

Bob
@bertieb I currently have a rather nasty mix :\

@Bob Ah cool
@Bob Let me guess... Greek and Roman?
:P

Bob
5:37 AM
(gaia is host, rhea is container-host, phoebe is/was experimental, leto was files, clio was gitlab, but then I also had terraria, firefox)
@bertieb I went with titan/primordial to avoid clashes with jmg but then we created a phoebe too, so bleh
and on the new server I created terraria and firefox again, urk

@Bob Well, notional / functional mix I guess we can allow
:P

Bob
@bertieb I want to migrate my gitlab server now, but I don't know if I should name it gitlab or choose another greek name :P

@Bob Decisions, decisions :P

Bob
I really should pick a proper name for terraria and firefox and CNAME them

^^ decision helper
:D
Mmm, I really need to sort out DNS here

Bob
5:42 AM
whoops, s/we/he/ created a phoebe
@bertieb I spend a fair bit of time on this page picking names

Had the usual dnsmasq "home router knows DHCP leases and hostnames that tie up to them" (if you recall that debian installer 'knew' the hostname of a recently-formatted system); but now there's a separate dhcpd to go with pxeboot stuff
So no machine knows what any other is called...
@Bob Haha, yes!

Bob
@bertieb o.O
you could probably set up an old machine (or rasppi?) to act as a DHCP and DNS caching server

@Bob Sounds like a plan. Need to recall how to do that as it's been a while (this kinda stuff isn't my day job as you can probably guess!) and relying on router dnsmasq has been kinda-mostly-good-enough for a fair amount of time

@Bob Aha, most helpful, thanks! Will digest that over the currently-brewing pot of tea

Bob
5:48 AM
It might be a bit outdated, but I suspect things haven't changed much.
I think the DHCP package name changed, though.
Been a while since I did anything like that.

And have sent myself a reminder (via IRC bot of all things) to review in a few days to make sure I've done it properly :P

Anyone know a quick way to test if Optical Audio is surround sound in Windows 7?

Bob
@bertieb I try to pick a name matching the purpose (gaia and rhea as 'mother of all', clio as the muse of history [get it? history, git?... yea I know it's bad])

@CanadianLuke Play something and put your ear to the speaker? :D
@Bob Should have more than enough to get me muddled through!

Bob
@CanadianLuke Play out one of the other (centre? back left/right?) channels and see what happens

5:50 AM
I'm used to being able to click a speaker and hearing a tone, but it doesn't appear to have that option. Windows 7 is claiming it's only a stereo device, the driver says it's 5.1
I'm trying to find out how to play out certain channels, yes @bob

Bob
@CanadianLuke Use the speaker test? Or the audio chipset driver bundled program? Or Audacity?

Didn't know Audacity would do that... I'll try that!

@Bob I know what you mean. I had hermes as a mail/message exchanger; hephaestus was for development... uhhhh

But the speaker test only tests stereo

@Bob Oh! momus was my IRC (previously irssi, these days the unfortunately-named weechat) interface. Satire and mockery indeed...

Bob
5:53 AM
@CanadianLuke I just assume it can. I use Audition more these days anyway.

OK, just reading about it

@Bob The best bit was after the (physical) move; I had a weird device showing up on nmap. Pings were 'strange' (varying from low response time to 'no route to host'). nmap OS detection gave some very weird results that I cannot quite recall. MAC lookup was of little help. Responded to ssh but not my key or standard password.
Then a hostname appeared with it- dionysus.
Me: WTF, someone has infiltrated a foreign device and is using my naming conventions??
Long story short and some other strange results aside, it turns out it was... uh... ahem... cough my laptop.

lol
ALmost everyone here seems to use the same set of names ;p

Was behaving odd as lid closed and ostensibly sleeping, but OSX is never fully asleep it seems...
I use a different password on my laptop, and had changed the hostname, and had it closed... but no excuse really. Just an extremely derpy day :P
But yeah. mfw
@JourneymanGeek It's a good set to use! :P

5:59 AM
@bertieb Athena is my main laptop. Artemis (ex-Athena) is my old laptop. hestia is my raspi, juno was my old desktop, Nyx is my current desktop, my seedbox at home is phoebe.

Bob
My desktop/laptop just have shit names

My old fileserver is bia, tho she's usually not in use. I used to call a particularly shitty laptop clocacina or something like that, correctly spelled.

Bob
I never bothered with naming them

Roman, but appropriate.

@JourneymanGeek Ooh. hera was my old main laptop. artemis is my old main pc, currently pulling duty as everything-server. I did use hestia (and athena I think) but cannot remember what for...
@JourneymanGeek Hah :P

6:01 AM
@bertieb: for various reasons, Athena is always my main laptop

@Bob That's what the bigguns are for. zeus, apollo et al- step forward!

and that's where the name scheme started

Bob
@bertieb I've been avoiding the primary gods/goddesses :P

Always female names for me tho. I use the naval tradition, and all my computers are "her" not "it" ;p

@Bob Heh, I know where you're coming from there. But if there's an appropriate time... :D

6:03 AM
@bertieb: lol
my main desktop is pretty powerful

@JourneymanGeek I can see that... (totally doesn't go off to steal that idea)

Bob
heh
I've only used female titan names (and one muse) so far

I was planning on sneaking in most of the parts, back when my parents weren't too happy with my computer building hobby.
(tho, the latest updates were on the sly, other than the monitor)

Bob
> Acratopotes (Ἀκρατοπότης), god of unmixed wine
O_O

@Bob Nice find :D There's some good 'uns out there

Bob
6:05 AM
@bertieb I'm just wondering why that has its own diety
trying to find an appropriate one for the terraria server

@Bob: cause someone liked unwatered down wine?

@Bob Gods for wine. Gods for unmixed wine. GODS FOR EVERYTHING

Only detected to Windows as Stereo :(

stuck drawers!

@JourneymanGeek Agh! The Pratchett-serving part of my brain is currently offline for maintenance

6:07 AM
;p

I need that pot of tea...

Bob
If I ever set up a CS server, it's probably going to be one of the battle/war ones. Plenty of those to go around.

@Bob Now that we're all on naming-convention terms comes the real shibboleth: which version of CS?
:P

Bob
@bertieb GO these days, though it was 1.6 before. Never played S

6:10 AM
@Bob Ah, so close!

Bob
@bertieb ?

shakes head sadly

(One of the few things I've never considered running, but I'm an anti social gamer ;p

Bob
The guns in S look so cartoonish!

Oh, I'm just winding you up :D

Bob
6:11 AM
Also some INS... always good for a co-op :)
argh, Terraria covers too much for a good name :(

But I had a lot of fun with 1.6 also... and S. These days it's relegated to Custom Christmas and supplying gmod :P

Bob
@bertieb The 1.6 servers here kinda died off :\
I was a modder there. Maintained a ranking mod and zp mod, and wrote a custom jb mod from scratch.

@Bob Insurgency? Being a cross between CS, COD, BF, etc etc etc it's pretty inoffensive sure. I find it a little... frustrating though :P

Bob
then stepped away for a couple years and came back to find the servers dead-ish
@bertieb Heh. Really easy to die.

@Bob Oh god, the mods! I forgot about the mods

Bob
6:14 AM
I don't play the pvp modes much.

@Bob I have a note here from your blood pressure and sanity thanking you

Bob
lol
Tried it for a bit, but eventually dying out of spawn gets to you
Had some fun times sneaking around, though.

@Bob You got out of the spawn? Luxury! Back in my day we got killed before we had spawned, then had to go down t' mill for 18 hours a day. IF we were lucky!

Bob
heh

Right, anacron vibrations aside- Windows cygwin, y u no honour crontab?

6:18 AM
@DragonLord I don't need latest fancy stuff. I don't see anything wrong in something that gets the job done even if it's old.

Bob
@bertieb eww cygwin :(
(I tend to prefer running posix stuff in a vm... cygwin is very intrusive)

@Bob Hey, sometimes you need to boot into Windows

Bob
@bertieb I'm always in Windows :P

@Bob ...touché

@bertieb: I run GOW for some linuxy stuff, or ssh into a real linux box ;p

6:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek @bob Aye, fair enough! Automating stuff in Windows is just alien enough to me to be a pain for when I'm in there...

Bob
@bertieb PowerShell is really nice
A bit verbose, but for complex scripts I'd take it over bash any day.

@Bob I know! Some very useful advanced features... But I knows me just enough bash to confuse my brain

Bob
(I'm actually more familiar with bash, but it pisses me off at times. Most of the time.)

Plus it doesn't get you an inbuilt sshd (yet)

Bob
@bertieb Neither does bash, technically :P
PS remoting is decent, though

6:23 AM
@Bob Aye?
Ahh
> The Enable-PSRemoting cmdlet configures the computer to receive Windows PowerShell remote commands that are sent by using the WS-Management technology.
Needs another thing that talks PS, presumably

Bob
I wonder... Calliope?
> Calliope (Καλλιόπη), muse of epic poetry
That might do for Terraria :P
Crap, how do I rename a VM? O_O

@Bob IMHO, Terraria itself is close enough to Greek-sounding that I'd take it as a name... YMMV; depends on what you can live with :P

Bob
terraria@terraria:~$ sudo hostname calliope

Q: i like my best guy friendd best friend

Azzy BrownHow do i ask a guy friend to be friends with benefits without looking bad? I'm 19 almost 20 and I'm a girl. I have mostly guy friends cus their a lot more fun than the girls in my town... anyway, one of my guy friends who I met first and that he introduced me to his friends who are pretty much my...

I love that that was reposted under the social tag

Bob
ahhhhhh crap I defined the block storage device as tank/vm/terraria

6:29 AM
I pre-vtc snarked on the last one being tagged internet-explorer. Good to see whoever they are, they're listening to feedback :)
(not that I can vtc, only flag for the grown-ups moderators attention)
@Bob Good luck finding all the other places "terraria" has crept in :P

Bob
Done!
Now to update DNS
Done. Now to pick a name for firefox
hmm... what's a god name for a sync server
s/god/good/ but either works :P
> Pheme (Φήμη), spirit of rumour, report, and gossip
maybe?

@Bob phoinix ?

Bob
heh, that's another option

@Bob Well played :P
Pheme works well for [ff]sync IMO
Thanks for the attention on that question @JourneymanGeek; though I was having [a little too much] fun in the comments

Bob
6:46 AM
@bertieb Alternatively
> Mneme (Μνήμη), muse of memory

Goddamnit! Effing Surround Sound Receiver is messed up! Test things with direct connections, it works fine! The speakers are good, but it's not reading from other known good optical audio sources properly, and the HDMI pass-through has weird red artifacting happening, and the DVD playing part is messed! Plus, it doesn't always output to the TV going through the device. Guess I'll need to buy a new one.

@CanadianLuke :-/ Servicing?
@Bob That works... but would also be a good one for a fileserver / backup server

@bertieb It's from when I was 20... Far outside the warranty period

Bob
@bertieb true

@bertieb: I half suspect that's spam bait.

Bob
6:49 AM
@bertieb but I was also thinking ffsync won't be my only sync server :P
ah well

@JourneymanGeek Well, it gave me a laugh anyway. Not terribly difficult early in the morning, but still.
@CanadianLuke Independent repair shop?

Bob
Oh, there's another one
> Mnemosyne Titaness of memory and remembrance, and mother of the Nine Muses.

I just spent the evening mounting the speakers in my new place, and running the wires, and re-wiring my current setup to go through this system. I'm going to live with the stereo sound from my computer and Bluray, and ignore every other aspect of it. It's almost midnight here, I'm heading to bed. 6 hours is way too long

Bob
I'll use the muse for ffsync then :P

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions

6:57 AM
@CanadianLuke Amen, enjoy the setup :)
@Bob No love for Acratopotes? :P

Bob
@bertieb I'll use that for my liquor store :P
Or vineyards? Winery? shrug

Ha :P
Me dad has a thriving grape vine round his way... Scotland isn't exactly known for its fine wines though
Drinking fine wines, sure
I mean
Drinking fine wines, sure

Bob
heh
Huh. Apparently my order was delivered today.
But I won't have time to install it today :\
@DragonLord How's Win10 on your Clevo machine?
I need to plan an upgrade for my W230SS

7:28 AM
cygwin cron, y u still no work?
I bet it's because you need a reboot, eh?

[SmokeDetector is lazy] Advertisement for "Coolmuster Android Assistant": superuser.com/questions/955173/…

@Whaaaaaat "SmokeDetector is lazy" ?
(I agree with the assessment, ofc, just curious)

@bertieb Sorry, AskUbuntu meme...

@Whaaaaaat oic, ty

@bertieb It's always so slow over there.

7:35 AM
Do we have a SmokeDetector installed in RA? :P
Probably not covered in the tenancy agreement...

Ah well. As long as the spam gets cleaned up :)

@Whaaaaaat I love using my daily flag allotment for spam :D
That, and "notananswer"

@bertieb Who doesn't? :D
Exactly why it was created.

@Whaaaaaat Handy. Suppose it is necessarily API rate-limited / throttled ?

@bertieb Not sure, but we usually catch the spam ourselves before it catches it. That would make sense though.

7:42 AM
Another tiptoed in: superuser.com/questions/955186/… :P
Having humans sit on the "new questions" queue seems more efficient than a bot reporting to a channel :P

/me times smokey
Do you guys not have it here?

Don't see it in the userlist
Anecdotally, the Qs flagged spam tend to get dealt with pretty sharpish
Our mods are on the ball :)

I really do wish there was a flag for "WTF!?"
As in worse than very low quality.

@Whaaaaaat The boot loop / 75 systems built / I don't understand / SSD problem / tried everything for 4 days post?
I had a go at editing that one, but didn't have the heart to cut out all the cruft... I guess I left in the stuff that pertained to what has been / will be attempted, and nixed most of the "I've spent thousands" / "I am confused" type bits.

Bob
8:00 AM
@Whaaaaaat Nup.
We had one chatbot (cc @allquixotic) that's been down for a while now.
But we use this channel for, well, chatting.
Automatic botspam would be annoying.
At best that would have to go to a different channel.

Hello peoples!

Bob
!!info
Nup, still down.

ELHO!

I'm wondering, does anyone here know where to "warn the world" (or Europe as the case may be) for using Win10 with SM951 Samsung SSD drives?

@bertieb Probably that one too. They're just everywhere.

Bob
8:02 AM
Anyway, stuff like SmokeDetector make more sense for smaller communities. SU is big enough that humans see and destroy spam pretty quickly.
@Asmyldof Make a blog post? Post on Reddit?
That's about as public as you'd get.
You'll get more attention if others link to your post, but you can't control that.
@Asmyldof Also, what exactly is the problem?

So, no good idea about a well read location I can post about Samsung telling me "Oh, it's not ready for that, firmware problem, contact our firmware supplier, bye"

@Whaaaaaat Sounds like an old-school horror movie. Invasion of the worse-than-"low-quality" posts! D:

@bertieb lel.

Drive stopped enumerating over night
Few days after a Win 10 upgrade, now the Bios takes ages and cant find the disk over the PCIe2.0 connection

Enumerator? I 'ardly know 'er!
...I'll let myself out

8:04 AM
Yeah, that's a good idea.
@Asmyldof Reddit would be the best place.

So I contacted Samsung Support just now and they flatly told me "Oh, yeah, those drives aren't Windows 10 ready. You should contact the Firmware company that makes the internal software for the drive. Bye now"

Bob
@Asmyldof Doesn't necessarily mean Win10 has anything to do with it.

@Bob Ding!

Fair enough. Still though

W10 might have instigated it, but it could have not been the root cause.

8:06 AM
@Asmyldof Return to retailer under consumer protection? (I'd still do the Reddit PSA thing @Bob mentioned)

That was mainly the point of my question.
Retailer is a border over
Gotta go now. Meeting
Thanks
Just want to warn other people to "check your wares" if you have a SM951

@Asmyldof Within EU? Should have cross border protection under <some directive> I'd have expected, but perhaps not

Not everyone can afford to buy a € 220 drive twice in one quarter
Yes, but if Samsung had responded professinally, that would have been easier, since they are located in the same town. Now I need to crack out my German again
Anyway, boss is looking frustratedly at me

@Asmyldof Yeah, disappointing response from Samsung. I'd wish you luck in German, but mine is almost definitely worse than yours ;) Good luck with the meeting!

8:32 AM
you just need a heatsinc on anything going that fast cdn.overclock.net/a/a7/800x800px-LL-a7017714_image.jpeg :-)

All lights in my house, y u flicker?
ponders switching off computers in case of severe mains voltage fluctuations

9:13 AM
Going to be cabling the backbone of this house. I've been recommended cat6 (versus anything claiming to be higher rated); should I do 2 cables between floors or is this redundancy not really worthwhile? Typical small British house so distances aren't a huge issue.

@bertieb: Consider that its harder to do more runs later, than to do it at once.

@JourneymanGeek Aye, I'd definitely favour the "leave in place as long as feasible" approach; particularly given the circuitous route this run will likely take, and that I will 'lose' under-floor access due to floorboard renovation making them not great for lifting.

so I'd have 2 cables even if I only need one.

@JourneymanGeek Sounds like my kind of thinking!

@Asmyldof: Its plausible. Their consumer drives don't have win10 support yet either
@bertieb: heh. The guy who literally wrote the book on being a sysadmin thinks so too ;p

9:18 AM
I swithered on cat6a for similar reasons, but have been steered away by someone more knowledgeable than I...
@JourneymanGeek :o Which book?

@bertieb: cat 6 is good enough for gigabit. Hell cat5e is good enough, but get cat6 anyway

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Always use conduits and leave a string.

@JourneymanGeek Aye. I was thinking down the line - always fraught with peril - to 10gbe though, can't be that far away

Bob
And don't make tight bends if you can avoid it.

@JourneymanGeek I'll keep an eye out for a 2nd hand copy :)

Bob
9:21 AM
@bertieb If you want 10GbE, you'd go fibre probably.
10GbE over copper is... uncommon.

@Bob: starting to happen on some higher end gaming PCs

@JourneymanGeek I won't tell anyone if you don't ;)

i agree with the biggest key being able to pull cable though, replace, change if at all possible. that way when cat27 cable is needed it can be installed without tearing the house apart.

@Bob Ouch... definitely no tight bends there

@bertieb: I have a physical copy
I ought to get a proper copy on the kindle if I can, eventually

9:24 AM
@Psycogeek Aye, will be doing that where possible, but this route is going to make that tricky. It may end up going through the bathroom, of all places :s
The cat6a is a dilemma as I have a spool of plan ol' 6 already and want to press ahead as the cable run is holding up decorating... but if 6a is a useful improvement in the medium term (5 years? 10 years?) I'd be tempted to buy a spool and do that for the sake of getting it done right
Price of 6a is not negligible (particularly versus free) though
harrumph decisions

My cousins have had a log built house (no gappped walls) and they just conduient stuff around the floor. This house on the other hand the @%#^$ RF cable wire is weaved through the wall, and it now is in very bad shape , drops many DB in signal . I just ran the cables where i could more temporary. I do not really see the huge problem though with baseboarding cable, after all the Log cabin it is the norm.

@Psycogeek Fair enough! I myself don't fancy the idea of lots of visible conduits (plus resale considerations?), but hard to argue with convenience and ease of access

Around the tech gear i laid in multi cables for video and RF cable, with breakout boxes at each end. it just hides behind all the Crap everywhere :-) desks and racks and furnature. It is still there, but it too is now completely useless . Gotta pull that out someday.
a problem mostly with the RG type of cable as the capacitance changes , where any simple insulated copper stuff , or twisted copper, does not die over time as quick. Like phone stuff stuck in peoples walls for 70 years, and power wiring (cept when it was cheap aluminum junk) and the standard copper stuff used for net should survive.

9:41 AM
@bertieb go with cat 6 ;p
... bathroom?

@bertieb @bob thanks. I will editorialise a nice post tonight. Will have to buy a new one right away (freelancer --> no laptop = no money), so let's hope I end up with two working ones soon.

Most of the net wiring sold around here at the "home improvement" stores though was pretty much crap wire, not 100% copper stuff.

@JourneymanGeek Noted! Will try and make it as replaceable as possible.
Bathroom... long story
Of two possible routes, going via the bathroom gets me under the (ground level) floor easiest
(There is a pipe chase in the kitchen)

@Asmyldof: hmm. I was about to ask... why a datacenter SSD, and a desktop OS?

It's... complicated

9:51 AM
Reading about the Samsung SM951 it comes in 2 type the AHCI & NVMe and bios updates could be needed, the driver and entire method and speed for the one vrses the other would be completely different. @Asmyldof which one would you be referring to?
Compatability for a specific motherboard it was put into would be really important. and with that kind of speed pulling crasies like 2G , it is enthsiest kind of things where getting it To work was half the fun of buying it :-)
The reviewers within 2 days of buying it already have glowing 4.5star reports on something that could collapse like a sandforce a week later. :-) The users instead have put it at 3star?
