boo
On one hand, onliner works correctly with FF40 and a 4K display. On the other, the dev tools dark theme is borked :/

3 hours later…
Bob
3:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek borked how? looks fine to me (no onliner)

@Bob: for some reason the minimise key, and the option bar buttons overlapped.
Cause of the wider buttons
the new release works great buuuuut no built in dark theme support

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O
onliner or just in general?
looks fine to me on my 3200x1800

4:18 AM
Oneliner prolly
anyway FF40 fixes it.

5:01 AM
Fans eagerly await 2015's 'Space Fights: Power Gets Up', although most think 1999's 'Space Fights: The Scary Ghost' didn't live up to the hype.

Q: Where to post enhancement/feature requests

teaRecently I posted a question. Which was closed as off topic. I then thought. Hey, now I don't know where to post my question. I don't even know where to ask where to post my question. I then came up with enhancement/feature ideas to help with this situation. So I wrote a feature request, which ...

Why are services like monitor.us or pingdom so fucking expensive?
I don't get it. I should pay $1 per month to have someone ping an IP address and draw a graph?
Like, $1 per check. And that's even underestimating the actual cost

9:17 AM
It should be more than just a ICMP echo request though.
But that is a setup-once thing. rather than ping do a script

9:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg f8lure.mouselike.org

10:07 AM
@bertieb Sweet. Thanks. I'll check it out

@OliverSalzburg Cool, it's the one I use for historical ping graphing so can't say fairer than that :)

10:20 AM
Seems perfect for what I have in mind
I have half a mind rolling my own service though
Seems like a nice application to write

@OliverSalzburg Aye, it's far from impractical. I think I have some half-arsed code from doing something similar; before I realised the reason I was using a service was because I was on a dodgy connection anyway...
gnuplot was my friend for that

10:40 AM
To those interested, the Back and Forth between Samsung and Company X, Y and Z has come to the point that I am not typing an Invoice for time, work and drive to both Samsung NL, which a local Executive Officer will receive by name by signed for mail soon. Gotta love the internet, social media and a general skill of stalking.
not = now
Anyone have some good advice for a nice and fast M.2 SSD card, minimum 100GB, which is also fast, but not a Samsung? I did notice the difference very well between the Samsung SM951 and the other one with a "low" speed of 510MB/s, but I can't seem to find any other drives that are pretty much 1:1 a replacement at a comparable budget range.
(that's read speed of course, copy from drive to mem on Samsung with its claimed 2000MB/s was about twice as fast in C++)

Not sure if anyone here has a M2 drive... and quite a few of us have Samsungs

11:02 AM
Oh what the...
I just synched my Exchange account with my Google account
Of course, Exchange generates calendar entries for everyones birthday
And then it synched those calendar entries back to Google
Now I have every birthday twice
And because Google merges like every piece of information from every account into one, I now even have the most remote Facebook contacts in my Exchange account O___o

lol
THis is why I try my best to keep everything of that sort seperate ._.

11:22 AM
> New monthly allowance starts in 0 day(s).
I think I'd like greater precision here, $PHONE_PROVIDER

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I messed up. Usually, I only want my calendars synched. I sync my Exchange calendar to a separate calendar in Google
But I was playing around...
And I can't get this Clonezilla POS to work!
It flat out refuses to connect to my SMB share
So I try to set up an SSH server on Windows, FreeSSHd, which refuses to save any user accounts, so I can't log in
I'm really close to mounting the SMB share in a Debian VM and accessing it over SSH

@OliverSalzburg That only happened when I bought my new phone

i turn t hat damn ofption off in fb
do not touch my contacts
i remember when i had a blackberry and the wife too
she had something where two services kept syncing to each other

Before which I had Brandless China Phones with generic Andriod, then I bought a "real" one and suddenly some people have 12 birthdays

and ended up with her brothers birthday (but only his) duplicated into 1000's of events

11:25 AM
Hahaha

I just ended up clearing my Outlook contacts :P
Whoever is important will get re-created!
And wtf is up with Clonezilla anyway. It apparently supports ancient SMB access, SSH, WebDAV!, NFS!, ...
I have never used WebDAV or NFS in production in my life

I haven't been on FB in... 30ish months? Feel a lot happier for it
@OliverSalzburg NFS is handy in a home network setting
Can't speak for production

FB has been gone for ... 5.5 years for me
It's difficult for a day, and then the second day I started feeling happier quite quickly

@bertieb What could I use to set it up on a Windows machine?
As in, a server

Lol. I only have an account cause its odd not to have one. Not used it in ages.
@OliverSalzburg clonezilla is mainly designed around a Linux workflow

11:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg Oh righty; you got me there I'm afraid. I use it on/from/between Linux machines. I've never used Clonezilla to back up to a live Win machine.

And meh offline backups mean downtime

@JourneymanGeek No shit :D
I have a laptop here on which I need to operate, so I need to pull an image first
I have used Clonezilla hundreds of times in the past, SMB used to work just fine. Today, it's just fucked

Windows?
Ahh offline
No spare HDD?

Dozens, but no way to connect them

Lol.
That's a pain.
Can't put it in another box ?

11:39 AM
Well, I don't want to even open the laptop up before having an image
I'll just use a VM, fuck it

i'm messing around with autohotkey to automate some web downloading (over a thousand files with sub menus to click through). i've made a script that recognises when a page has loaded by pixel colour and goes through these menus till it's back at the start. i now need to make another script to select each file in the list and run the first script then when it's finished, select the next and so on...

Can anyone here explain how to more effectively use the Windows kernel debugger? What commands do I need to know? superuser.com/questions/955379/…

it seems like a fairly standard scripting language. what is the standard way of getting a script to do this?
i could, for example, have one script that clicks the first link, runs a script B (that goes through all the menus and back to the start), clicks the second link, runs script B again, and so on...

@JourneymanGeek: Can you delete this accepted answer? It's incorrect and should not be allowed to stand. superuser.com/questions/955379/…

but i'm not sure if that is the best way. is there a way to do it all in one script where it runs a certain sequence and then returns to where it was before it activated that sequence?

11:48 AM
Be advised that my answer is being deleted by a moderator because it is found to be incorrect. Please accept magicandre1981's answer instead. — DragonLord 14 secs ago

@DragonLord ERM
Nope. You down vote or comment

@JourneymanGeek No, this is my own answer and it's wrong. I can't delete it because it's accepted.
I'm trying to get my own accepted answer deleted.

ahh
then you leave the old answer in place and edit

That was already done.

Good
I'd rather not delete it anyway cause the process matters
It would be nice if the correct answer was picked but that's not in my hands.

A: Should I remove a wrong answer (Peer Pressure)?

devinbAnswers that are obviously wrong should be deleted/fixed. They simply confuse the issue, even with downvotes on them, the people viewing your answer won't necessarily know why it is wrong, and so they might draw the wrong conclusions. Answers that are subtly wrong should remain. You should add ...

12:14 PM
Nice. Now I finally got a way to connect storage to Clonezilla. Now the laptop shuts itself off, because it reaches 98°C while copying the files

o_O

So, I guess, I'll open the thing up and take the drive out

@OliverSalzburg Freezer Spray!
:-D
It used to be my go-to with my HP laptop, but that's also because as a part of my operations budget I buy the shit in bulk
(genuinely have an unopened box of 12 cans + what's left of the previous one at all times)

lol
I have a laptop cooler for situations like that

12:46 PM
Oh, Windows
That's two different machines in case it's not obvious
One machine is hanging, so I work on another through RDP. Same shit there

1:00 PM
lol
FFS puppet again with the error 400
I wish someone could explain wtf causes this
It defiantely appears via the json interface that it's adding the nagios client module twice, but.....
in foreman it's not listed twice, so I don't understand why.

Does this look weird to anyone else? O_o
I'm not so sure this backup is going the right way

@JourneymanGeek If I had it only for a laptop, I would probably use any of the 12VDC, 24VDC, 48VDC or 230VAC fans I have in standard stock for projects, but that requires wiring and such, but the freezer spray is there for debugging heat problems in PCBs that I either have to fix or have designed
And then freezer spray is just easier than wires
:-)

1:15 PM
@OliverSalzburg: very

@OliverSalzburg That is new fangled NTFS Symlinking as parsed by an old-fangled Win32/DOS application
Because symlinking is new and scary to Win developers, they never thought about parsing it before... say... 2013
And then Windows just reports it as a normal folder for backwards compatibility
Thusly: Infinite loop
Because the folder, here's the hilarious part, of "Users\AppData\" contains a symlink to itself with the name "Application Data" to fix a recursing bug
Which is pretty much a 1, 2, 3 manual of how not to make a modern day OS

Yeah, it's pretty amazing, I have to say
I'm now trying Disk2Vhd
I can not believe the scale of problems I'm having with this POS

My default procedure is have a script that unlinks the symlink, makes a backup through whatever program (don't care how old) and then re-create the symlink
I first discovered this when I used my old 2009 dirsize analyser and it reported a Users folder of 79GB on a 60GB drive

What I don't get is, I'm running robocopy with the mirror and backup switches. I would normally assume that a somewhat sophisticated application that is mirroring and backing up data, could handle a fucking symlink

It should
But....
Traffic control systems should be made by a good engineer, which they aren't either

1:23 PM
Before, I was attempting to copy with TeraCopy. And that failed majorly when I tried to select a target folder, and, previously, I had a folder on a network location selected, but that folder was then deleted. The application could not handle it and would freeze

At some point I considered finding a way to make my entire OS run from inside a 100GB corporate Dropbox

Which would introduce all kinds of cool new experiments, like running the same Linux on 3 exactly the same machines, but I suspect Debian and/or Ubuntu now also do Hardware ID checking like Windows does

Bar patrons chorus @allquixotic!

Helleuh
Right, gotta be back in the lab. Where I have not got Stack open, for obvious reasons

1:28 PM
@Asmyldof I like it! :D

that wouldn't be slow at all
actually on a system with 128GB of RAM, a symmetrical 10 GbE ethernet connection, and a hefty write cache in RAM, it might work

@OliverSalzburg: I use unstoppable copier for stuff like that
donno how it deals with wierdness like that

I use Windows Explorer right now. That's a pretty sweet file copier as it turns out ;P
I'm being extra stupid right now by running the file copy and disk2vhd simultaneously

2:21 PM
As a script runs... How do I get it to run a sub-script and then continue with the next command on the first script once the sub-script has run?
I think I just don't know the correct vocab in order to search for how to do this.

2:33 PM
Ooh... Would that be a subroutine?

@allquixotic That is actually quite close to what my build server has (bit of a werid-nomer, since it compiles/renders/builds just about everything from PDFs to Gerbers to hex files)

2 hours later…
4:06 PM
@marcusdoesstuff One might do well to mention the Script language (and in the case of one or two obscure languages maybe also the OS)

4:26 PM
heya @Mokubai

Heya @allquixotic, how's tricks?

guud
munchin' lunch
you're probably home or leaving

Just got home, contemplating dinner. :)

a brit friend of mine from years ago would always leave work when i was getting out my lunch, so we combined "home" and "lunch" into "hunch time"
so when he said hunch time i knew he was going home and i was going to lunch

Well it is indeed nearly hunch time, dependant on when we can be bothered to cook...
ah, home.
not dinner
so yeah, hunch
brain ache
Any good flags today? shuffle shuffle

4:32 PM
haven't really paid any attention

@Mokubai Yup, the Canadian Flag! /me stands up and pretends to salute

/me stands up and salutes the official flag of Canadia
Oh Canadia! Land of the free!
heroic music plays in the background, interrupted occasionally by loud moose calls

4:53 PM
Wait, Canada only got a flag in 1964? What did they have before?
I thought that was the first thing a nation did....

Like in the planning stages of making a country or starting a revolution there'd be this dude at the back of the room who'd say "I've got this really neat design for a flag..."

Two assault rifles in an X with red on either side?

I wonder if Super User needs a flag contest, before we make our bid to take over the network...
That way we can just plant our flag in other sites and say "ours now" like the British Empire did.
@CanadianLuke You want that for the Canadian flag?

As someone who believes we need better gun laws (i.e. allowing people to carry and purchase "restricted" firearms, and have them for protection), kinda yea. I know it never would go, but it's a possibility

5:07 PM
I always thought the best gun law was: "not one of you feckers is allowed them, now stop trying to kill each other."

Problem with that reasoning though is that:
1. Canada is one of the largest *exporters* of firearms
2. What good does a gun law to restrict lawful citizens do? Criminals don't follow laws
3. If everyone assumed everyone else was armed, who's gonna be dumb enough to rob a place or kill someone?

3. Crazy people, suicide-by-cop
(or worse, the people who don't think they are crazy...)

Actually, one of my friends did SBC back in Jan or Feb
He had a cap gun

:-/

Still doesn't make it right

5:11 PM
OTOH, even our cops over here are (usually/mostly) unarmed, which seems to work well for us :)

If we completely banned guns (even the manufacture of them) then we could come up with some truly horrifying/fun ways to kill each other instead.
Death by being strapped into a rollercoaster ride for a week
Death by treacle tart
I think I need to play a game, my mind is slightly broken.

specifically around the 6:00 mark or so i think

5:33 PM
All of societies problems can be solved by everyone packing heat huh?

6:04 PM
@Psycogeek Haven't looked into thermal imagers of this sort until now.
Can be very useful in making energy-saving fixes around the home.
Consumer-grade thermal imagers. Lots of uses.
I've had an inexpensive ($40, Newegg) IR thermometer for a while and have used it to monitor the temperature of electronic equipment over time as well as get a better sense of how hot or cold things are.
It's no substitute for a real thermal imager, though, where you can actually see a heat image.

@allquixotic I love that video now! Lol

Tianjin fuel depot. Makes Enchede look small
Storage facility for volatile materials

6:26 PM
Got my third monitor mount today. This is so fucking great. Having 3 screens fully adjustable in their position is so great regarding comfort
Desk has the perfect height for typing, screens have the perfect height for viewing

Aye. 3 screens rocks.
Sadly my desk only has room for 2

@Hennes That's where the mounts are especially great. You just need space for the mount bracket. The screens could extend over the edge of the desk

I would settle for a bigger desk first. And a better chair
The displays are an option after those
Also, candy box: now at sword of flames plus 41
That tab has been running quite a while since you introduced me to the game

6:43 PM
@bertieb Suicide by cop seems to be hard. The cop will probably just shoot you in the leg.

6:59 PM
@Hennes If the cop feels threatened, and doesn't know what's going on, I could see it happen. And yes, if the cop is thinking straight, and has time to aim low, he probably should. I'm not a cop though, and I don't know what goes through their minds when they draw their weapons.

I shit! ?
Followed by 'G-d damn it, now I have to do tons of paperwork'

3 hours later…
10:07 PM
@Bob is your Terraria server fully functional (and programmed in multiple techniques) yet?

2 hours later…
11:46 PM
@OliverSalzburg: What's the inputs on the QNXes?

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?

is tempted to get one of those korean screens as a secondary monitor in the near future, but the sheer number of options is overwhemling ;p
@OliverSalzburg: DVI? HDMI? DP? Some combination of them?

@JourneymanGeek All DVI. But I'll be switching one to DP tomorrow

ahh nice

That's the setup tonight

11:49 PM
ahh
(Currently at one 4K/27 inch and 1080P/24 inch ;p) +
